Peninsular Surgeon.......2000-06-12
Whether or not this volume is what you are looking for depends on the type of information desired. As a story of what it was like to be with Wellington's forces in the Peninsula, it is quite good. It also does a fine job of demonstrating the prejudices of the day -- the author clearly does not like Portugeuese nor Roman Catholics. As an information source on what the practice of medicine was like during this campaign, it is useless. The author rarely mentions anything about his work except to say that they lost X officers and Y men. The introduction, by Ticehurst, is 7 pages of interesting information about the practice of medicine in this period. Very useful, but having a volume by this gentleman could be more interesting. As a period piece, to give the flavor of the times, it is very worthwhile. As an information source, it is not.

Customer Reviews:
Great resource.......2005-09-28
I lead nutrition workshops for parents but I am now working up a class for kids. Evers book is just what I needed. The book has lots of ideas for making nutrition education fun and interesting for children. She gives lots of activities and crafts that can help illustrate the concepts she presents.
As a homeschooling mom, I like the way nutrition education can be incorporated into math, language arts, history, science, etc. However, if your child is in public school, Evers has lots of ways you can work with the school to get more nutrition education and healthier food in the cafeteria.
I also love all the book recommendations given. Evers lists a bunch of titles that will encourage children to try new and different foods.
One thing that is slightly dated now is that Evers spends a lot of time on the food pyramid, which has now been replaced. (However from what I understand, this new system is rather complicated so for children the food pyramid is probably much easier to understand.)
This book is a great resource for parents and teachers.
What kids really need!!!.......2004-04-27
Connie Liakos Evers really knows what kids out there need. This bood is written for the adults. I wish we could enable people, kids, teens. adults, to choose balanced meal food items from menus and help people to picture balanced meals and make their choices easier at school or work cafeterias, restaurants, food services of all kinds. There's alot of responsibility in consuming food these days.
excellent information and material.......2004-04-25
I teach an afterschool class to elementary students and I loved this book. It has so much information I can share with the kids. In my class we make a healthy snack together and talk about why it is healthy for us. This book helped me create my curriculum and put together recipes. The students (primary and intermediate grades) really enjoy my class because of it. I highly recommend this book, especially because Connie Evers is a Registered Dietitian. The knowledge she shares is superior to any other book I have read. I also highly recommend her workbook as well as her website. Great references and information for anyone interested in children's nutrition!!!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Education and Activity Book!.......2000-04-22
Wow! How to Teach Nutrition to Kids - An integrated, creative approach to Nutrition Education for children ages 6-10 - is a wonderful tool for all educators who work with children. The book and accompanying Leader Guide follow three guidelines - keep it fun, integrate nutrition with other subjects, and emphasize behavior change. The book is divided into sections that make it very easy for teachers to implement nutrition with other subjects. Yet the numerous activities will have children improving their eating habits from day one! Ms. Evers has clearly written this for today's children and the many pitfalls they have in their diet and lifestyle. (...) - The Science Spiders Newsletter
Who said learning about nutrition has to be boring?.......1998-07-02
This book is loaded with fun activities for children such as watching Saturday morning commercials in between cartoons for an hour. This lesson makes them aware of the need to read nutrition labels and not rely on how appetizing it looks.

This book is out of print. Purchase "Nutrition Fun with Brocc & Roll" instead.......2007-07-30
Note from the publisher: This book is out of print and out of date. The replacement for this guide is "Nutrition Fun with Brocc & Roll," which was published July 2007. Do not purchase this guide for the outlandish price that is being offered by a third party on Amazon.
great activities for kids.......2004-04-25
I bought this guide as well as the book, How to Teach Nutrition To Kids. Invaluable information for anyone interested in children's nutrition. I share the activites from the workbook with elementary students in an after school class I teach. They love learning about nutrition and want to eat well. I thought I would have a hard time getting them to try vegetables, but the activities make everything more fun. I highly recommend this guide and the author's other book.
Customer Reviews:
A seriously good, and very fun, cookbook.......2004-10-09
"The Surreal Gourmet" had first caught my eye for its novelty and humorous illustrations. But once I started cooking from it I found out that Blumer's recipes are really very good! The roasted garlic appetizer might seem less novel now than it did when the book first came out, but it's easy and seriously delicious. I can make a meal out of it. And the carrot and ginger soup is easy, with a unique flavor. I'm glad that there are still more recipes in the book that I haven't tried, because I have faith in Blumer -- faith that they will be tasty, easy, and unique.
this is good stuff.......2000-06-15
I love this cook book. It's simple and easy to follow. Bob explains why it's best to use certain ingredients that will make a difference in the overall flavor, like using sea salt or fresh herbs. I love the black olive spread, the eggplant spread and the caesar salad. But, I also learned some great simple techniques like using a good wooden bowl for making the caesar. I also liked the tips at the end of each recipe, for wine, music etc. This cook book has so much to offer, good food, lots of useful tips, great artwork, and it's so much fun to read.
Surreal Gourmet: good, quick recipes.......1997-11-26
Bob Blumer's Surreal Gourmet is one of the most-used cookbooks I have. Blumer's irreverent style is matched only by his recipes. Particularly good are the ceasar salad, steak au poivre, and herb butter, just to name a few. Bob's art is worth the price alone.
Book Description
The Food Network's Bob Blumer is called the Surreal Gourmet for good reason: he's an artist when it comes to creating dishes as fun and delicious to look at as they are to eat. Ceci n'est pas your ordinary party fare, but an array of 50 little mouthwatering masterpieces. With recipes such as Coconut Shrimp Lollypops (skewered shrimp with an amazing apricot dipping sauce), Chinese Snow Cones (wontons stuffed with chicken salad and ginger vinaigrette), and the ingenious and very adult S'more Shooters (amaretto hot chocolate with roasted marshmallows), guests will be abuzz about the food all the way home. Complete with tips and techniques, including shortcuts and prep times, as well as whimsical presentation ideas and Bob's quintessential suggestions for music to cook by, each cocktail bite is simple enough for the home cook and memorable enough to become addictive. With Surreal Gourmet Bites, the food will be the life of the party.
Customer Reviews:
Fun with food.......2006-02-18
Through my job in the kitchen appliance industry, I was lucky enough to see Bob Blumer do his thing in a very intimate (about 10 people) setting. From the moment he showed up wearing an AC/DC t-shirt and a pair of outrageous chef's pants, I knew this was going to be a lot more fun than the typical Food Network cooking shows(except maybe maybe Giada's Everyday Italian...but that's for different reasons).
Besides tasting great, the foods he prepared were just downright funny! He was very personable and had a great sense of humor which is reflected throughout this entire book.
I wasn't going to give this book 5 stars simply because these are just not foods you can prepare on any sort of a regular basis. They are mostly meant to be...for lack of a beeter way to describe it....different. But I reconsidered and gave it 5 stars anyway because it's just so damn funny and so damn original!
If you are going to a party, get-together or anytype of social event where food will be served, and you want your offering to be the talk of the moment...this is the book for you. Even if you're not a great cook or don't do such a hot job preparing these bites, the presentation alone will make you the hit! Check it out!
GREAT NEW FOODS!.......2005-12-13
I tried the smores shooters, and coconut shrimp popsicles, the sauce on the shrimp popsicles tasted great like something you would get in a resteraunt.I also tried the bang bang drummettes, and the inside out BLTs which tasted great. Living in Colorado I enjoyed the smores shooters as they are a great treat to have before you go snowboarding!
Artist Still Playing With His Food with Amuse-Bouche!.......2004-09-15
Teasers as warmup course, or appetizer feast, here is consummate surreal gourmet providing the inspiration with about fifty recipes composing sections on: fish, meat, fowl, veggies, sweets.
This continues his strong past of imaginative food with stylish twists of humor and fun with food. Try the likes of: Fish Cakes (salmon cupcakes with dill mashed potato icing); Cocktail Dates (bacon-wrapped parmesan-stuffed dates); Cowboy Cookies (chile-crusted tenderloin between carmelized yam slices); Inside Out BL's (bacon, arugula, and goat cheese sandwiched between fried tomato slices);Knuckle Sandwich (nutella, hazelnuts and sauteed pears on toasted pound cake).
Add to all this suggested menus, brief primer and notes oon frying and advance-prep ingredient handling, and suggested menus.
This is fun food, more lighthearted but serious food as well along the lines of Gale Gand's "Just A Bite" or her partner's Rick Tramonto's "Amuse Bouche."
Book Description
Martha Stewart run for cover! The Surreal Gourmet is back with hundreds of unique ideas for throwing a worry-free dinner party. High Octane Entertaining with Feud!.......2003-09-11
This guy is a blast! Not one to be turned on with entertainment gourmet TV types, this guy is exceptional. Tuning him in on FoodNetwork several times and really enjoying him and his creativity approach and the fun he has with food and serving it takes me back to my inspiration to enter gourmet --- Galloping Gourmet.
Galloping to Surreal -- this is great wealth of inspiration! Recipes and music and suggestions and great photos and the adventure club and alternatives --- it all makes for one rockin' cookin' adventure.
Check out the likes of "Champagne Rissoto" or "lobstercapecodstyle".
Try and you'll go back for more, forsurereal!
Brilliant illustrations!.......1999-09-18
This is a very user-friendly dinner and hosting guide. Infused with a Los Angeles, bohemian-chic, wine-glass-in-hand vibe. In addition, Bob is one hot tamale.
our favorite cookbook.......1999-09-15
The Joy of Cooking is a great cookbook, but The Surreal Gourmet's style makes it fun to read and try recipes. The recipes are popular favorites presented in an easy-to-follow format. At the end there are drink recipes, basics (stock, pesto, etc), and tips on setting up your kitchen, even music recommendations. The book lives up to it's title with cool illustrations and a refreshing style that is definitely surreal compared to other cookbooks.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Artwork.......2000-01-07
Each recipe has variations, suggestions and hilarious notes to the reader. I have found this book in particular to be a favorite in my kitchen and have purchased several copies for friends. His artwork has a whimsical vitality that make it a joy to leaf through and cook from.

Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2006-07-04
Highly recommended. The simple language and short chapters made it easy to squeeze into my schedule, but I still found it packed with vital info.
Perfect baby shower gift!!!!!!.......2006-01-09
This book is amazing. I saw it featured on CBS Sunday Morning and realized that this book probably had the answers to questions that I didnt know where to look for..and lo and behold..It did!
It forced me to take a look at issues I have been procastinating since becoming a parent 4 years ago. The book is VERY user friendly. It takes complex issues such as College saving, choosing guardians and summarily describes various options and scenarios that puts the legal mumbo jumbo into everyday "mommy brain" language.
I think this book is pratical and a must have for the parent library.
should be a gift at every baby shower.......2006-01-06
This book gives sound, realistic advice to parents of young children who are trying to navigate life with a "new" family. Finances were hard before kids, but this book helps guide parents to the right choices after having kids.
The chapter on the laws dealing with nursing in public and in the work environment is very important as more moms are choosing to nurse for longer periods of time.
There are many baby books out there, but none that cover these real world issues with ease and authority.
Great parenting book.......2006-01-05
Parent Savvy has been an extremely helpful book for me as I am expecting my second child in just a few weeks. With minimal time on my hands these days I found the information in this book to be clear and concise...it was extremely easy to read and a great book to have on hand as a resource for questions that come up on a daily basis. The book was particularly helpful answering the financial questions that both my husband and I have regarding our childrens' future. I am happy to have found this parenting book to add to my collection I know that I will continue to use it as a reference in years to come.
The must-have sanity guide for new parents.......2006-01-04
This book answers all of the questions you were afraid to ask - or didn't know who to ask - with easy, practical advice. Just when I thought I couldn't read another book about spit-up, sleep deprivation, and the wonders of parenthood - this book came along with its sincerity, honesty, practicality - and what you REALLY need to know when you are expecting... even if it isn't your first baby!

Brilliant portrayal of TR as man, not legend........2002-08-20
TR's 1913-1914 expedition down the River of Doubt (subsequently renamed Rio Teodoro in his honor, and later Rio Roosevelt) is an astonishing piece of history - one often refered to in passing by other TR biographers, but not often fully explored, as it here. Author Ornig tells an exciting tale well, from the multitudious details of planning and executing a massive exploring expedition in the early 20th century, to vivid portraits of the characters involved. This book would be a wonderful companion for any adventure traveller (or even armchair adventurers).
Best of all, Ornig is no run-of-the-mill TR hagiographer (and there are plenty of them out there), nor is he interested in taking unfair potshots at the great man (plenty of those folks out there, too). Ornig simply relates events as they occured, and doesn't care a whit whether they cast TR in a favorable or unfavorable light: TR was a poor shot (due to his poor eyesight) and became grumpy and embarassed when he missed easy targets. TR was delighted with the impact on his waistline when the expedition was forced to subsist on reduced rations -- and argued against the restoration of full rations even though others were suffering. Do these facts detract from the TR legend, or add to it? I have never been a fan of Marble Men, and found that I loved TR even more after glimpsing some of his human flaws in MY LAST CHANCE TO BE A BOY. No student of TR should be without this volume.
Details one of the great adventures of the 20th century........1997-01-23
Ornig provides the first detailed account of one of the most exciting adventure stories of the 20th century -- Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of the River of Doubt in Brazil's Amazon. The story is more incredible when you think that Roosevelt was a 55-year old former President at the time of the expedition. As we approach the 100th anniversary of Roosevelt's presidency, and as we consider our relationship with the earth, it is worth taking another look at this great outdoorsman. Ornig weaves together the political and diplomatic origins of the expedition and how Roosevelt, his son Kermit, and the rest of the expedition got much more than they bargained for. There's murder, there's drowning (and a question of whether Kermit Roosevelt was accountable), there's frustration, and there's a former President on the brink of death. After you read it, you'll want to read Roosevelt's account, "Through the Brazilian Wilderness." You'll enjoy that one too
