Misleading descriptions and a disappointing book.......2007-09-14

Based on the initial description of this book and several of the reviews, I thought this was a book that would give in depth information about the SS officers and their roles in the concentration camps. Instead, most of the book consists of lists of officers with short biographical info. There are some very good pictures and some information, but the majority of the book is simply lists. Based on the initial description, I purchased this book for my students to use as a research tool to learn more about how the SS operated, their day to day lives, etc. I was extremely disappointed. Considering the price, I wish the description of the contents had been clearer. I would not have purchased the book.

for those who know about the subject but miss the photos.......2007-03-08

Consisting of a long section presenting (very abridged) cv's, and a photo section, the photos are what makes the tome valuable. These pictures aren't to be found elsewhere, and for those who are fond of reading facial features, they make for a very interesting journey into the heinous world of everyday neighbors turned mass murderers.

As more information related to the persons shown is to be found on the internet at a mouse's stroke, the cv section is basically just a starter, and could well have been done away with.

Disappointing Book.......2002-05-16

This was the first WW2 book I read that I was not happy with. The previous reviews gave a false impression as to the content of the book, which was the original reason for my purchase. The book is nothing more than a "directory" of names of those personnel that served in the camps---no pictures at all! The photo section was not impressive, except for several photos of Auschwitz-Birkenau. This would probably be better advertised as a history reference book, don't expect anything more than cold, hard facts here.

Outstanding Reference Work.......2000-08-18

Many books have been written about the Holocaust, SS and the Nazi regime in general. Where many of them fail is in referring to individuals as if the reader understands exactly where they fitted into the overall picture and is familiar with them.

If you have made more than a cursory journey through this fascinating and terrifying period this book is an essential source of reference.

The author has diligently uncovered, at the very least, the basic identity of virtually every individual who served in the concentration camp system. That many of them subsequently 'graduated' to front line service in the Waffen SS does not disguise the reality that they had camp 'pedigrees' - somewhat at odds with the popular 'we were only soldiers' cop out.

So next time a name, whether familiar or unfamiliar, crops up in a World War 2 oriented publication you are reading chances are you could reach for this book and find his ( or her!) personal details, service record, and maybe even a photograph.

Had this book been released shortly after 1945 I am certain it would have caused a great deal of discomfort to a number of individuals who subsequently covered themselves in shrouds of anonymity.

In particolare, in questo "The Camp Men" viene fatta definitiva luce sui rapporti fra le SS impegnate nei campi e le Waffen SS e più in generale sulla storia personale di quanti offrirono la propria anima al folle incubo nazista (provenienza, studi, onoreficenze, stato di servizio). Il lavoro sulle fonti è denso e accurato, l'organizzazione dei dati è puntuale, le conclusioni sono semplici e dirette. Non si tratta di un libro di uno storico: direi che l'approccio è più archivistico o statistico. Ma questi dati sono talmente immediati che chiunque abbia un minimo di conoscenza della storia delle SS non potrà che riconoscere che di uno studio del genere si sentiva assolutamente bisogno. Altamente raccomandato assieme a "The Field Men" e a "The Cruel Hunters", sempre di French MacLean.

Really gripping!.......2003-12-01

I literally could not put this book down until I was done with it. It's easy to dismiss books by little-heard-of publishers, but this one could easily convince me that there might be thousands of excellent titles that just don't get the marketing of the New York Times bestsellers.

There is enough detail to interest a scientist, enough plot to keep most anyone reading, and enough moral ambiguity to really engage your mind. The real world isn't black and white, and this plot sure isn't either.

A worthy read, and better than many better-known titles!

Quia Imperfectum - A Personal Side of Medical Reseach.......2003-05-03

Quia Imperfectum (Imperfect Things) is a terrific read for both those in the medical profession and those not, of which I am one. An extremely well written, true story about medical research, L-DOPA, Parkinson's disease, the ideology and thrust of renowned scientist, Dr. George Cozias, and his associates, and serendipity of some of the findings. The book is written by and through the eyes, experiences and observations of a then young Columbia University medical student, Bernard M. Patten, now Dr. Patten, MD, an esteemed neurologist. Dr. Cotzias was Dr. Patten's mentor. In addition to the depicting research and its researchers, part of the book's facinating interest lies in the US politically using Dr. Cotzias L-DOPA, Parkinson's disease work to treat China's ailing Chairman Mao. With all of this, the book portrays, with no punches pulled, the interrelationships, intimacy, multiple dimensions, and conduct of the people directly and indirectly involved in the story. Cover to cover, it is a great story with true-life surprises and a book you will have gained by reading.

A Great True Story.......2002-08-17

Absolutely loved the book. A true story written in a novel fashion by a legendary neurologist, a graduate with honors from Columbia University. He starts his account as a young ambitious medical student who by a stroke of luck gets to work with a research scientist, the mad type. A break through discovery is made to alleviate a devastating disease. The US goverment funds the research because Mao, the China leader of the '60 desperately needs the new medicine and the US desperately needs to control China's nuclear bombs.
Beware, the writing has a great sense of humor, you won't be able to put the book down.

Hands reaching for the drowning.......2002-07-28

Stressed mice in a maze make the same mistakes repeatedly. Those who are terrorized, whether it be a real or imaginary fear, find themselves locked into patterns of thinking and behaving ... often very destructive. Creativity cannot exist within these environments resulting from unknown or unpredictable fears. In these times of "terror" it is easy to rely on old reliable ways of power becoming frustrated when these ways are not successful in resolving anxiety. The author of this book was my doctor for many years. I have an incurable disase and he gave me no false hope. But he did give me hope and a sense of empowerment by providing a sense of control I desparately needed through symptom management and medical support when other doctors told me there was nothing they could do ... to "go home and live with it." Again, Dr. Patten points us in a direction of power that has very little to do with traditional wars. It is the hand that reaches out for the drowning ... the hand no one would turn down at such a moment.

The preservcie teachers in my gifted education class at OISE/UT have found Being Smart About Gifted Children to be a very good guide in their efforts to understand gifted children. As their instructor, I appreciate the current research and practical ideas, which are communicated eloquently in straightforward prose. Thus, I would strongly recommend this book to teachers and parents interested in learning more about the psychology and education of highly able learners.

A Teaching Book, not a Recipe book.......2007-09-11

I have just about every Williams Sonoma cookbook ever published, including 3 previous books on soups and stews. They have been great and so for me, it was a no-brainer to order this book as well.

It is a good book, but notice the title. It is more about how to make soups generally, than about how to make specific soups. So it is more a book on culinary technique than a classic recipe book.

If you already know the techniques, e.g. making roux', making pureed and cream soups, etc., then this book may be a bit disappointing since it does not have any particularly marvelous recipes as do the other books in the series. But if you're new to soups, this may be a great book.

BTW, I highly recommend the WS Soups 1, Soups 2, and Soups and Stews.

Practical Tips.......2006-02-19

Williams-sonoma mastering series is full of rich and practical tips for all cooking levels. i really enjoyed the layout and the helpful pictures. The explainations and techniques I found to be very helpful while I was preparing the soup dishes.With practice I am sure my soups will turn out like the wonderful pictures shown in the book some day.

A book every young lady should have.......2002-06-07

I received this book upon 8th grade graduation 21 (yikes!) years ago from a lady my mother worked for. I found it to be a most interesting and informative book back then. I still refer to it today, yellowed and worn as it is! I have given a copy of this book to my husband's niece upon her 8th grade graduation, and will be giving one to my own daughter when she graduates 8th grade this month! Even if a young teen doesn't fully appreciate the book at the time, she will in time. It is a valuable resource for any woman, young or old, who wishes to follow proper etiquette, and covers just about every situation imagineable.

A Must-Read for Anyone who wants to change their world.......2001-08-27

This masterful collection of intimate interviews is even more than the sum of its wonderful parts. While there are many books about activists, this is the only one that embraces activists across diverse disciplines, ranging from community arts and culture to banking and finance. After reading this book, I have come to the conclusion that interviews may be the only way to authentically capture the perspectives of visionary leaders. Marie Cieri and Claire Peeps clearly engendered an intimacy with their subjects that resulted in an outpouring of insight and honesty. As a reader, you feel that you've actually had a personal conversation with these special human beings. And perhaps the greatest gift of this book is that it humanizes these activists, focusing on the everyday choices that these leaders made in their lives, and the simple improvisational skills they demonstrated in the face of life's surprising curves. The result is that the reader is inspired to believe that he or she could actually make changes in their own world. And what better reason is there to write a book? I purchased a stack of these books for my family, frioends, and colleagues. I heartily recommend buying this book for everyone you know.

ATTENTION ARTISTS AND ACTIVISTS!.......2001-07-07

This is a great book for everyone interested in arts and activism to read because there are no easy answers or facile solutions given here. The editors respect the individual voices of the 15 artists and activists they interviewed. They don't try to tidy up the narrative and impose their own generalizations and comparisons. What they give us through these interviews are tough questions and real inconsistencies that we must try to figure out. Why are so many people indifferent to artists today? Can art help us relate across generations and build stronger communities? Can involvement in activism challenge artists to do better work? To me, this book contains the kind of information and inspiration that represents art and activism at its best.
