    Book Description

When the Civil War broke out, Missouri was secured for the Union, but many Southern-leaning citizens in the border state resented the Federal occupation. Fighting along the border flared up again as hundreds of boys and young men took to the bush to champion the Rebel cause. Waging a particularly vicious brand of guerilla warfare, they stayed to fight long after regular Confederate forces had been driven from the state.

Although William "Bloody Bill" Anderson always warrants special mention in books about Confederate Civil War guerrilla William Quantrill, Anderson's story has scarcely been told in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars The Personal Side of Brain Injury.......2001-02-06

Dr. Janet A. Stumbo's fascinating book is about one woman's search for treatment. Dr. Stumbo-a veterinarian practicing in Australia-was in a car crash that left her partially blind, in great pain and with short-term memory problems. Soon after the crash, her husband divorces her and she must use all her strength and determination to procure the rehabilitation she needs. She is determined there must be some help for her vision (one of her greatest joys was veterinary surgery). Her search leads her to behavioral optometry and she does, in fact, regain much of her sight. The book is extraordinary in detailing her therapies and recovery. Anyone who wants to begin to understand the rehabilitation for someone with a brain injury should read this book.

      Book Description

From the author of the best-selling Yoga Deck comes Essential Yoga -- the only hatha yoga book to offer this many poses (over 100), this many illustrations (over 180), and this many suggested sequences (over 50). Practical and interactive, it focuses on the poses themselves, providing clear, concise instructions and detailed illustrations for each, all in a lay-flat format that's easy to refer to during yoga practice. It also includes six classic moving meditations (such as Sun Salutation and Camel Vinyasa), 10 beginner-to-advanced sessions, and 48 mini-sequences designed to build strength for specific activities or alleviate health problems. Essential Yoga combines physical poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayamas), and meditations (dhyanas) into a simple and complete reference guide for yoga practitioners of all levels. Along the way, author Olivia Miller provides guidance on proper technique and alignment; modifications for beginners or those with knee, neck, or back pain; suggestions for preventing injury; and ways to keep a regular practice interesting and active. For beginners as much as experts looking for one complete book that has it all, Essential Yoga is it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Yoga Medicine Chest.......2007-08-07

Essential Yoga is like a medicine cabinet for yoga practitioners. Inside are simple, precise, and thorough single-page guides to about 100 essential poses, warm-ups, meditations, and breath exercises...plus, what is far more important, two chapters full of creative and unique routines and sequences. Each pose is simply and crisply illustrated, and detailed instructions are given. (It's particularly nice that the book is sewn to lie flat, a feature which makes it quite easy to use while actually practicing! This nicely supports the premise of the book, which is to be a text that is for the practice of actual yoga--and not just "about" it.) Each pose includes English and Hindi names, suggested modifications and variations, and a sentence or two about its physical and mental benefits. What really makes this sublimely practical book a "medicine chest", however, are the sequences. From short vinyasas (everything from Camel to Sun and Moon Salutations) to complete workouts of several lengths and intensity levels, the back chapters of this book contain everything you need to begin a home practice for all moods and occasions. Best of all are the short series geared to various physical goals and/or ailments (from "Biking", "Golf" and "Skiing" workouts to programs for "Toxin Flush", "Cold Prevention" and "Depression")--they're effective and eminently doable.

5 out of 5 stars How yoga helped me destress..........2007-03-18

I loved this book. I started yoga to destress from work, but I found that when the yoga instructor called out positions by name, I was lost. I found myself staring at what the instructor was doing and losing the benefit of yoga. This book not only helped me learn the positions, it also has some really great routines you can do at home.

5 out of 5 stars This may be the answer !!!.......2005-09-26

This may be the answer to many questions in the domain of yoga. After reviewing many books and articles, I could say that Asana is a kind of exercise that involves stretching and strengthening your body in a relaxed way with easy breathing. But Yoga is entirely different. Asana is a small part of Hatha Yoga which is a small part of the YOGA.

The contemporary systems of different types of Asana Styles (not different types of yoga styles ) do not seem to handle the exercise part properly. Many of them are doors to injuries.

Based on the Medical Field, the exercise system should involve a warm up followed by a stretching routine and strengthening, endurance routines and cool down part. ( There is no question about Aerobics. You should have it whether you do asana or not, Walking,Jogging,Biking or any kind is a must )

The auther of this book, seem to understand the basic needs clearly and it reflects perfectly in the pages. Yes. if you do it correctly in the way He talks about here, Yoga, sorry Asanas will be so enjoyable and more than that, IT PAYS YOU BACK WITH GOOD RESULTS !!!.

Yes. That is true. There has been no definitions of how to do asanas. They are all defined by the Gurus in the mid 1900s. So doing it in a "Safe Way that suits YOU" is the best way to achieve results.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for EVERYONE!.......2005-08-18

This is the GREATEST yoga book!!! I wouldn't buy another. I'm a beginner and the illustrations (TONS!) are amazing. The book also gives you explanations on all positions and groups the exercises for the area that you want to focus on. The sessions range from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours!!!! EXCELLENT BUY!

              Book Description

With this newest volume in the Foxfire series comes a wealth of the kind of folk wisdom and values of simple living that have made these volumes beloved bestsellers for the last three decades, with more than two million copies in print.

In 1966, in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Georgia, Eliot Wigginton and his students founded a quarterly magazine that they named Foxfire, after a phosphorescent lichen. In 1972, several articles from the magazine were published in book form, and the acclaimed Foxfire series was born. Almost thirty years later, in this age of technology and cyber-living, the books teach a philosophy of simplicity in living that is truly enduring in its appeal. This new volume-- Foxfire 11--celebrates the rituals and recipes of the Appalachian homeplace, including a one-hundred page section on herbal remedies, and segments about planting and growing a garden, preserving and pickling, smoking and salting, honey making, beekeeping, and fishing, as well as hundreds of the kind of spritied firsthand narrative accounts from Appalachian community members that exemplify the Foxfire style. Much more than "how-to" books, the Foxfire series is a publishing phenomenon and a way of life, teaching creative self-sufficiency, the art of natural remedies, home crafts, and other country folkways, fascinating to everyone interested in rediscovering the virtues of simple life.

Enough with the editing and correcting the language usage of these wonderful people...why take away from their culture and natural use of language...why should I read about mountain people when their speech patterns are corrected?...I might as well read any old book about growing apples anywhere...give me back the language of Foxfire 1.

                "Engaging."--Booklist

Young provides an overview of the fascinating natural and human history of one of the world's most intriguing commodities: chocolate. Cultivated for over 1,000 years in Latin America and the starting point for millions of tons of chocolate annually consumed worldwide, cacao beans have been used for beverages, as currency, and for regional trade. After the Spanish brought the delectable secret of the cacao tree back to Europe in the late 16th century, its seeds created and fed an insatiable worldwide appetite for chocolate.

The Chocolate Tree chronicles the natural and cultural history of Theobroma cacao and explores its ecological niche. Tracing cacao's journey out of the rain forest, into pre-Columbian gardens, and then onto plantations adjacent to rain forests, Young describes the production of this essential crop, the environmental price of Europeanized cultivation, and ways that current reclamation efforts for New World rain forests can improve the natural ecology of the cacao tree. Amid encounters with sloths, toucans, butterflies, giant tarantula hawk wasps, and other creatures found in cacao groves, Young identifies a tiny fly that provides a vital link between the chocolate tree and its original rain forest habitat. This discovery leads him to conclude that cacao trees in cultivation today may have lost their original insect pollinators due to the plant's long history of agricultural manipulation.

In addition to basic natural history of the cacao tree and the relationship between cacao production systems and the preservation of the rain forest, Young also presents a history of the use of cacao, from the archaeological evidence of Mesoamerica to contemporary evidence of the relationship between chocolate consumption and mental and physical health.

A rich concoction of cultural and natural history, archaeological evidence, botanical research, environmental activism, and lush descriptions of a contemporary adventurer's encounters with tropical wonders, The Chocolate Tree offers an appreciation of the plant and the environment that provide us with this Mayan "food of the gods."

                  Book Description

The Scleroderma Book has long been considered the leading source of information for patients suffering with this disease. Now comes the Second Edition of this highly respected volume, extensively revised by Maureen Mayes, M.D., the leading authority in this field. Writing specifically for patients and their families, Dr. Mayes draws on her extensive experience treating scleroderma to provide up-to-date, practical information that will help patients manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Dr. Mayes begins with an easily accessible description of the basic facts, distinguishing between the many manifestations of the disease, ranging from localized scleroderma (small patches of hardened skin, most common in children, which tend to clear up over time) to systemic scleroderma, which can attack the lungs, the kidneys, and the blood vessels, and can be life threatening. Equally important, she offers sympathetic and reassuring advice on matters that often concern patients, such as the best course of action for those who want children, what to do if the disease affects your sex life, and what you can do to help your doctor treat your illness more effectively. The book concludes with a good humored, frank discussion about how to cope, day in and day out, with an uncertain future--how to be a "person living with" scleroderma, not a "victim suffering from" it. The new edition has updated chapters on the genetics of scleroderma and on new treatments for complications of this disease. Touching on virtually every aspect of this disorder, The Scleroderma Book provides a reliable source of information and reassurance for patients of any age and no matter how severe their form of the disease. 5 out of 5 stars Disease Specific Information Easily understood by Patients.......2002-10-24

Some books about scleroderma are clearly written with the medical community in mind and are way to technical for the average person. This book is directed to the average person and wrote in a way that can be easily understood by those who do not have medical experience. I highly recommend this book to every person with scleroderma and to ever person that is interested in learning the facts about this disease. Get your copy today!

5 out of 5 stars comprehensive and clearly written.......2001-10-21

As a nurse practitioner, I felt that the info in this book was very comprehensive... I also felt that the language was well written in commonly-used descriptive terms, so that any lay person could also understand the content. Very helpful info and practical advice.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the newly diagnosed........2001-05-16

Before this book my husband and I felt lost trying to find answers. It answered all of our questions from what lab work needed to be done to why I might be having certain symtoms. I even recommended this to my Docter to tell his other patients about. This is a must for everyone diagnosed and family alike.

5 out of 5 stars Highest Endorsement from International Scleroderma Network.......2001-03-15

As President of the International Scleroderma Network (www.sclero.org), this is one of my favorite books to recommend for all scleroderma patients and their family and friends.

Dr. Mayes is a world leader in the field of scleroderma and her clinic is a member of the international Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium (SCTC).

Moreover, Dr. Mayes is an extremely popular speaker at scleroderma events, due to her clear, friendly, and down-to-earth style. I have met her, and I have also heard from a great many of her patients, all of whom have spoken very highly of her.

1 out of 5 stars An extreme disservice to Scleroderma patients.......2000-11-26

Dr. Mayes's book gives a well-written account of how scleroderma progresses in a patient unabated. However, to subtitle this book "A Guide for Patients and Families" is grossly inaccurate. Dr. Mayes misses the mark when she fails to discuss or even mention antiboitic therapy as a treatment. Her condescending advice on coping with scleroderma was particularly distasteful.
