When Hitler and the Nazis swept to power, Van den Bruck realized Hitler had become the personification of the violent dynamism he had recommended and foresaw the horrors to come.

Tantalizing, puzzling and revealing, yet dangerous.......2000-07-11
I am not a book reviewer. I am not a great historian either. But I am a reader, an anybody, "interested" in history rather than a history scholar. I had (and still have) not read the book "The Third Reich" by Arthur Moeller van den Bruck, so I did not know first hand what to expect here.
Bottom line: This book is a study in character. It is not the biography of just one man (AMVB), but two: AH as well. Brilliantly, maybe even unconciously, this work reveals what I believe the difference was beetween AH and the rest of the people of his time, as exemplified by AMVB. The ideas between AMVB and AH did apparently not differ very much, yet the personalities do: human bevavior, "morals", versus absolute wild and barbaric, in-human ruthlessness. AH could kill a lifelong friend without loosing a second of sleep over it, AMVB was plagued by depression (consience?) and killed himself. History (and politics) is all about character, not about philosophies. The story of AMVB puzzles, it is tragic drama of classical a stature. The picturesque and minutely detailed szene descriptions capture the readers imagination, the reader literally lives through early 20th century Berlin and Vienna. Yet, it this, this all to human picturesque in stories about AH that could easily make one forget what a mass murderer he really was. This is the danger of such a book. It tells a story from eyewitness accounts (O Strasser, a black shirt!) and personal (the authors) imagination; it describes the philosophy of the absolut inhuman from a perspective all too human; hence it cannot claim to be objective or entirely truthful. It can only tell a story, like a novel writer does. It is work of fiction in an unfictious world. A puzzling story, yes, but how much of it should we really believe?
Not the Man Who Invented The Third Reich.......2000-07-06
This is billed as the history of Moeller Van Den Bruck, the man who's book "The Third Reich", inspired Hitler.
While this book had some potential it falls down on the lack of basic material. Stan Lauryssens reveals in the last pages that all of Moeller Van Den Bruck's papers were destroyed at the end of WWII. This explains the structure of the rest of the book - a brief guide to the world in which van den Bruck lived and died. The result is that you only get brief glimpses of the man who was supposed to be the centre of this book.
It's also my opinion that Lauryssens also takes Otto Strasser (the so-called Anti-Hitler Nazi) altogether too much on his word.
Yet for all of this, it is an interesting book to read. For anyone interested in Weimar and what happened to it, it's worth a look.

The Hitler Book: The Secret Dossier Prepared For Stalin From The Interrogations of Hitler's Personal Aides

Book Description
As a soldier in the first World War, Adolf Hitler never rose above the rank of lance corporal, and before that, he had been an impoverished drifter. Yet within months of the war’s end, he had embarked on a path that was to lead Europe into years of conflict, terror, and the Holocaust. In The Man Who Invented Hitler, David Lewis pinpoints what he believes were the key events in his transformation. He documents the fact that Hitler emerged from the war with hysterical blindness, not blindness from mustard gas poisoning, as commonly believed. Hitler was treated by the controversial psychiatrist Edmund Forster, whose methods included telling patients that only the strength of their will and personality could bring them recovery. Once Hitler found that by sheer will he could cure his own blindness, the next step was obvious to him.

The making of evil.......2004-10-18
What are the causes of evil? Why do some people commit
evil acts? What is evil? Does evil always carry
within itself its own destruction?
These are eternal questions. And questions that we as
a society must be able to answer, if we are ever to see
an improvement of the human condition.
The rise and fall of the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler is
a case story of evil. But all too often the intricacies of WW2 battles and details of Holocaust crimes overshadows the psychology of the people and leaders involved in this the most epic of wars.
With his new book David Lewis tries to correct this by giving
us the psychology of the man who was to be known as the Fuhrer.
Raised in a family with a distant and unloving father,
the young man becomes an orphan after having watched his mother die in agony. Hitler then travelles to Vienna where he soon
joins the ranks of the down and out. Sees his artistic dreams
squashed and eventually welcomes war as a salvation
from the hell he finds himself engulfed in.
All of this we have heard before -
surely the seeds of evil are there, but still there is a mystery:
In ww1 Hitler never rises above the rank of corporal and never
shows any leadership potential. Then after ww1 the former outcast suddenly has a purpose in life and an iron will to make all his dreams come true. Before the war he is without the will
to make anything happen except being down and
out in Vienna on his own. After the war he eventually rises to the position of absolute ruler of Germany.
Surely ww1 did something to Adolf Hitler. But
this books offers more - the tantalizing new theory that the psychopathology of post ww1 Adolf Hitler was also the result of psychiatric treatment for hysterical blindness gone horriblely wrong. That the doctor who was supposed to cure Hitler for his illness after (the supposed) gas attack, actually pushed him further in the direction of megalomania and world conquest.
I suppose the theory is still speculation, and I am not sure
that it actually adds that much to the picture of the causes of evil that we have already.
But the book makes it plausible that evil was not cured by doctor, but made worse by a doctor.
Thats pretty stunning stuff.

Book Description
Pain Killer OxyContin, a potent painkiller containing opium-derived oxycodone as its key active ingredient, was first sold in 1996 as a treatment for cancer patients and other chronic pain sufferers. From the start, the drug's manufacturer aggressively marketed its patented time-release formula as a breakthrough in the effort to reduce prescription drug abuse. It wasn't long, however, before thrill-seeking teenagers shattered that illusion of safety; by simply crushing an "Oxy," they were able to tap into a high so seductive it would come to dominate their lives. Some patients, seeking relief from pain, also found themselves drawn to the drug's dark side. Pain Killer takes readers on a journey of discovery that begins with the true story of Lindsay, a high-school cheerleader in Virginia who gets hooked on Oxys, and expands outward to explore the critical issues of legitimate pain management, prescription drug abuse, and how the misuse of science by the drug industry threatens the public good. With the fast-rising abuse of prescription drugs by young people ringing alarm bells within government, the how and why behind the OxyContin disaster is a gripping read not only for parents, but also for medical professionals, community leaders, business executives, and all those concerned with this crisis. The dangers described in Pain Killer also reverberate far beyond the threat from a single drug at a particular moment in time. The focus of our government's war on drugs has clearly misled many of us into thinking that only illegal drugs smuggled from beyond our borders can be abused. As Meier tells the dramatic story, some of the most deadly substances are produced and sold legally right here at home.THE EXTRAORDINARY AND TRUE STORY OF OXYCONTIN EQUAL PARTS crime thriller, medical detective story, and business expos, Pain Killer takes a hard-hitting look at how a powerful drug touted as the salvation for millions triggered a national tragedy. At its inception, the legal narcotic OxyContin was seen as a pharmaceutical dream, a "wonder" drug that would herald a sea change in medical care while reaping vast profits for its maker. It did do that; but it also unleashed a public health crisis that cut a swath of despair and crime through unsuspecting small towns, suburbs, and cities across the country. As reports of OxyContin overdoses made front-page and network news, doctors, narcotics agents, regulators, industry executives, and lawmakers raced in, scrambling to slow the damage. Behind it all stood one of America's wealthiest families, and a drug company whose relentless promotion helped fuel the problem Written by award-winning journalist Barry Meier, whose special report in the New York Times triggered national interest in OxyContin, Pain Killer chronicles the rise of the multibillion dollar pain management industry and lays bare its excesses and abuses.
Customer Reviews:
Clearly a one-sided view replayed over and over and over...........2005-01-24
I have read and heard so many negative things about Oxycontin that I can't keep silent about this any longer! I am a chronic pain patient who was on Oxycontin for many years. I also participated in one of their early drug trials for chronic pain, so I have personally contributed input to Purdue about how this medicine affected my body and mind. It was truly a lifesaver for me at the time, as it allowed me to return to work on a full-time basis. (When I say full-time, I REALLY mean FULL-TIME! I had two full-time 40 hr./week jobs plus I designed a bi-monthly magazine on a free-lance basis. I have several inoperable conditions which cause me to suffer constant, intractable pain on a daily basis.
I tried all natural alternatives such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, meditation, herbal diets and others for several years before finally applying to Purdue's clinical trial for chronic back pain, in which Oxycontin was being used for pain relief. By the time I started the trial I could hardly sit in my office chair for more than 15 minutes. I had tried other medications new to the market at the time including Trazadone, which put my heart into severe arrhythmia for days after taking only one dose. Other drugs had intolerable side effects; Oxycontin did not. Instead, I received a steady dosage of pain relief medication which did not make me 'high', sleepy nor nauseated. I was overjoyed to have my quality of life returned to me!
After being in the 3-year clinical trial for a year and a half, I was told that the trial was being suddenly halted due to the bad press that Oxycontin was receiving. The company which handled the clinical trial for Purdue did not want to be involved so they just dropped all participants, leaving us with only a few pills on hand and no referral to a pain management doctor, as they had initially promised. I was fortunate to find a doctor at the 11th hour who would accept me as a pain patient.
Without getting into all the details of 'life afterwards', it should suffice for me to mention that Oxycontin can be a worthwhile and helpful drug in the hands of a chronic pain patient. A person in pain does NOT get 'high' from opiates. Instead, the medicine is used up by the pain receptors in the brain and never reaches the 'pleasure centers'. Pain patients feel ONLY RELIEF FROM PAIN.
I sincerely wish this bad press would stop as it is doing a great injustice to the chronic pain patient. If a person wants to get 'high', they can take Oxycontin or they can take a slew of other drugs OR they can simply turn to alcohol, which is not only legal but is also widely available! I can guarantee that more young people are killed by the effects of alcohol than by Oxycontin. And yes, they can still sniff glue or smoke pot or take any number of synthetic substances such as Ecstasy and get their buzz that way. Oxycontin and Purdue are not the villains here; instead, we need to look to ourselves for responsibility and sometimes to the parents for their lack of responsibility. And ultimately, the person taking the drug is the one who has the REAL responsibility -- not only to themselves, but to everyone around them who might be affected one day by their bad decisions.
Let's put the blame where it belongs and STOP punishing the chronic pain patients, who are only trying to have some quality of life. Thank you for listening - now won't you please help us by spreading the word that we deserve to have our dignity restored and the quality of life returned to us - even if that means we have to take Oxycontin in order to be able to live?
Thank you.......KO

From Foxy to Oxy: The Perils of OxyContin.......2004-06-23
As a recovered alcoholic and drug addict, and now a substance abuse counselor in a methadone clinic, I have seen the ravages of opiate abuse firsthand. The old days of methadone clinics being exclusively for down-and-out heroin junkies are long gone. Now, the majority of clientele in methadone clinics is for narcotic pain medication dependency and/or addiction. I have always been interested in finding out the true story behind the rise of the now notorious OxyContin, and after reading Painkiller, I was not disappointed. It has an interesting approach in that it simultaneously tells the origin of OxyContin in a chronological fashion while describing the devastating effects OxyContin had on a high-school age cheerleader. It is easy to take the side of the primary individual from whose perspective the author builds his indictment against the manufacturer's of OxyContin, Purdue-Frederick. The individual is a doctor who practices in the poor areas of West Virginia coal country. However, the addict population in general has always been very creative and innovative in their attempts to find out the ways any drug, whether illegal or prescription, can produce the best highs. And, even though Purdue-Frederick did indeed have a very aggressive incentive campaign to lure physicians into switching all their eligible patients away from lighter, and more traditional narcotic pain medications, they cannot, in my opinion, be seen as the scapegoats the author tries desperately to make them out to be in the OxyContin crisis that developed. Pain management has always been an inexact science at best, and in this author's educated opinion, why should those who will always do their best to end-run around the proper use of this, and other legitimate medications, hold those hostage who use them for their intended purposes. Painkiller, whatever the reader feels personally about the debate concerning OxyContin, is still an excellent read, and details the origin of OxyContin, and the history, both negative and positive, of opiods and their use for pain management in the United States.
fabulous book.......2004-06-13
Terrific piece of investigative journalism. I could not put the book down. It's also a thoughtful and important statement about the increasingly blurred line between legal and illegal drugs.
Must read for Victims of Cancer Pain.......2004-03-18
Although a section concerning pre-90's events was slow going (why it's a 4 & not a 5 star), this was a do-not-put-down-until-finished book for me. I wish we had read this book last August. The very first question we asked the oncologist was "is Oxcontin addictive?" -- Response "no" -- WRONG - as Meier reports, even the medically-intended patient can become addicted. Meier also points out the danger of mixing anti-depressents and Oxcontin -- perhaps the oncologist should have read this book since an anti-depressent was prescribed to simulate chemo-affected appetite (fortunately we have moral objections to anti-depressents & it was never taken). Repeatedly throughout his sensitive handling of the need for pain relief by cancer patients, Meier reminds the reader that other non-narcotics should be used first -- and that does not mean going from Advil to Oxy! Unfortunately the oxcontin was no more effective than the over-the-counter asprin, perhaps not all patients can digest either the wax or the acrylic shield, yet Purdue seems to have ignored that possibility in their agressive marketing while so brainwashing cancer care doctors that only increased amounts of their money maker are offered. This is an excellent exposure of the marketing ploys used by drug companies, Purdue is not alone, with the resulting cost to all of us in both higher prescription bills, addition and the fight against it. Reading Pain Killer should make you think twice the next time you see a TV ad for a prescription drug.

Cocktails 2005 - ( a collection of drinks and mixes).......2005-05-24
This book is perfect if your purpose is to serve guests the most
up-to-date drinks. The authors explain how to "dress up a drink".
For instance, there are techniques to chill a glass, rim the
glass with condiments or flame twist a drink with fire. The volume is well researched and topical for today's times.
Classic drinks are the Vanilla Pear Mimosa, Serendipity Champagne, Napier (with fennel syrup) and Champagne Mojito with mint leaves.
The acquisition would be very helpful if you have been away from
formal social scenes for a time and there is a need to update the
repertoire of drinks which you can present to guests without too
much preparation. This book would be a bartender's delight.
It is clear, concise, cheap and colorful with each drink depicted
in the preferred mode. Buy this book and you will impress the
guests with a thoroughly up-to-date preparation of fine wine and
liquor.

Unexpected pleasure, this book.......2007-10-11
I LOVE this book which is the quintessential book on the art of knitting. Debbie New's creations are mind-boggling, and so wonderful. Definitely a book to inspire, not a straight pattern book.
A must have .......2007-09-19
Debbie New is the mastermind behind some of the most ingenious knitting projects and methods out there. This book is a well of inspiration, techniques and artistry.
Nice book, more arty than practical.......2007-05-20
I love the book, very nice ideas and great pictures. In my opinion it is not so great for it's practical patterns (the ideas are nice but the sweaters are shapeless) but for nice original ideas.
Excellent. Unique diversity knitting techniques.......2007-03-27
Excellent buy. Unique and unusual diversity of knitting techniques. Beautifully presented.
Inspirational knitting design.......2007-03-20
I usually resist buying more knitting books, but this one is definitely worthwhile for anyone wanting to explore new approaches and learn new techniques. The color pictures are gorgeous and the instructions clear. I especially like the fact that the patterns are based on your own gauge and leave room for experimentation. Favorites--the scribble lace and the dishcloth vest, but i think I'll be coming back to many if not all the others too. I've had so many disappointing experiences with incorrect patterns, where I've had to rip out and figure out the correct pattern and measurements myself anyway. This book shows you how to get the correct measurements and gives you the freedom to select your own yarn, needles and gauge.
As other reviewers have said--Unexpected Knitting continues in the tradition of Elizabeth Zimmerman.

Outstanding!.......2001-02-15
I've checked this book out of the library so many times, I'm now buying my own copy! It's an outstanding source of information tailored to herb growing in Florida. Its format makes it a quick and easy reference and the author frequently points out things that make growing a specific plant in Florida different from growing that plant in other locations, even other locations in the rest of the South. Especially helpful were the pointers concerning things like: when "full sun" might not mean "full daytime Florida sun." I've already tried many of the suggestions and recommendations made in this book and have found each one to be suitable for my own gardening situation. If I could only have one Florida gardening book, this would be it!
An excellent, quick guide on how to grow florida herbs........1998-10-16
In this easy to ready manual, you will find herbs, a short history of them, their uses yesterday and today, also the conditions they like to grow in. It is very informative. An excellent and handy guide for the beginning herb grower.
Book Description
"Dr. Ackerman appeals to the intellect and the heart. His book has the potential to change how parents view divorce—from their children's vantage point." —Margorie Engel Author of the Divorce Decisions Workbook and the Divorce Help Sourcebook
". . . gives clear, practical guidelines to all parents who are wrestling with the pangs of separation and divorce." —Lita Linzer Schwartz, PhD, ABPP Distinguished Professor Emerita Pennsylvania State University Coauthor, Painful Partings: Divorce and Its Aftermath
Divorce is tough for everyone involved, but it can be especially devastating for children. Ultimately, how children are affected depends on how parents conduct themselves during this trying time. Written by a psychologist and child custody expert, this book coaches you on what to expect during divorce, and how to act in your children's best interest. "Does Wednesday Mean Mom's House or Dad's?" won't tell you how to "win" custody battles (a contest nobody ever really wins), but it will show you how to work with your spouse in order to effectively parent together while living apart.
Dr. Ackerman coaches you on every aspect of the divorce, custody, and co-parenting process. You'll learn how to help your children deal with their feelings about the divorce, and handle the changes in their lives. You'll also get a wealth of practical information on what to expect in the legal process, the ins and outs of various custody arrangements and visitation plans, and how to avoid the pitfalls of parenting from a distance.

An Informative Examination of Guidelines to Follow.......1998-07-20
When I picked up this book I was looking for some information about the author. I wanted to get an idea on his perspective on shared placement and co-parenting. I had become quite "stuck" in the once traditional way of thinking that the mom should automatically be the primary caretaker (because I had always been). I was extremely concerned that my 4-year old son feel as though he had his "own" home rather than feeling like a ping-pong ball with no place he could call his own. After re-educating myself, I soon realized that my son has adjusted very well and I believe he feels perfectly okay with the fact that he now has 2 homes and 2 families to be loved in. I was delighted to find that the author has written this book in everyday terms and provides some wonderful information on how to handle many aspects of the divorce/co-parenting situation.
We, as divorcing individuals, need to put aside (and work through our own grieving of the end of the marri! age and dreams we had ourselves) or the "negative intimacy" that clouds much of our initial reactions and decisions. The bottom line is that if we are truly loving and wanting to make the healthiest transition from a two-parent home to "2" - one-parent homes for our children, we must make a conscious effort to put our children truly first and not allow our emotions (or the button pushing attempts of the other parent) to trigger unhealthy reactions and/or responses from us. I have realized that if my child's father tries to push my buttons - it is because he is at a different coping level within the grieving process of divorce (negative intimacy) than I am. When I view it from this standpoint, I am much more successful at dodging those buttons!
Customer Reviews:
He is a born story-teller. .......2007-03-17
I bought this book hoping to glean secrets of how to become a famous illustrator. What I got was the best entertainment since Mark Twain's "Roughing It". It's not, "Well, I was born here, I had a good (or bad) childhood, I went to art school, and became famous".
Norman Rockwell had a quirky family, quirky neighbors, played boyhood pranks, had little boy models play pranks on him, and served in WWI by painting portraits of all his officers and quirky navy pals. He goes into ineresting detail about everyone.
He tells about his teachers and classes. One teacher was George Bridgeman. (He didn't know who Bridgeman was, so he flipped a coin to see if he should sign up under him or the "other" teacher.)
When he talks about his art classes, he mentions what the teachers said, and what he learned. (George Bridgman would rate all the paintings in the room, and Rockwell was dissappointed that he was only number 2 and never number 1. George Bridgeman told him, (implying that the number 1 guy was just the best at copying Bridgman), "Don't try to be number 1, be an ORIGINAL). He talks about when he submitted his first Post Cover, how intimidated he was, and if he could just paint ONE, he would be famous, happy and rich for life. (He went all the way down to the POST building, and almost didn't go inside.)
I have not finished the book yet, but I don't care if Rockwell ever becomes famous or not, I am having so much fun finding out what happens next. Reading this book is like sitting down with Rockwell at his house and saying, "Tell us a funny story about something that happened in your life." He lights his pipe, thinks a minute, and decribes it so that you can see it all: the background, the people, the dialect, and then, the funny climax -- just like a post cover.
I want tell you everything in the book to entice you to buy it, but then you would know all the punch lines, and I can't tell them as well as he can. So buy it, snuggle up on the couch, and have a fun time.

Amazon has not delivered Norman Rockwell Adventures.......2007-01-05
I would like to review this book but the problem is although I ordered it in Oct. of last year when you said it was in stock and would ship in a few days, I still have not received it. You also have it listed as available with several of your suppliers. So the low rating is for poor service.
Great Read.......2005-10-07
Rockwell's a fine writer and his is an accessible style. His career took him many different places in the mid-20th century, so you'll be surprised at the places he ends up and the people he meets. The clear message is that he worked hard, very hard, to sustain his career. The second message is that he held a skeptical view of the notion of art as an end in itself, and relished contact with his public. The book really is about his professional career. He tucks away his private life, and perhaps this really is as it should be.
This is the kind of book that makes a good gift: everyone knows Rockwell's art, everyone has his own favorite(s), but no one knows the man behind the picture!
As noted above, the ending of the book, journaling the creation of the "family tree" painting, is a good look inside his creative process.
My Adventures As an Illustrator Review.......2001-08-13
This is a wonderful book about the life of Norman Rockwell as only he could have written. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and I have recommended it to all my friends. It gives you an understanding of his life and his discriptions of all the characters in his life are really fun. I have never read a book with such fun descriptions. He went through a lot of phases in his life and moved whenever he found he was lacking of ideas. If you like Norman Rockwell paintings, this book will help you enjoy the painting even more. What can I say - This book is really fun!!
A great illustrator, and a pretty decent writer.......1999-05-30
Often we are discouraged from finding out too much about our heroes and icons, lest we be disappointed with what we find. Rockwell, however, shines as one who is thoroughly interesting, although different from what one might imagine in his memoir/autobiography.
I suppose one might expect the celebrated illustrator (he was careful to always distinguish himself as an illustrator and not an artist) to something above the fray, laughing at the foibles of the human condition. Here we find that Rockwell was just as neurotic, and full of fancy as any of his subjects. His life, however, wasn't always a Rockwell painting. After a very unsuccessful first marriage, Rockwell found love in the arms of his second wife.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is when Rockwell takes us through a Saturday Evening Post cover from concept to painting. You couldn't imagine all the second guessing Rockwell did, even after the painting was done.
If you're more than just a casual Rockwell fan, you must read this. You may be stripped of a few illusions, but you will definitely appreciate the personality behind the brush.
