Book Description
The riveting, true story of a young American paratrooper who came up through the ranks, trained and led a rifle platoon into Nazi held Normandy on 'D-Day,' June 6, 1944, and as a company commander, fought in the heroic defense of Bastogne against a mighty German counter-offensive in what became known as the 'Battle of the Bulge.'
Customer Reviews:
I'm so glad I read this.......2006-08-27
The Story of a Soldier 1940-1971: The Airborne Spirit and Recollections of Colonel Edward S. Mehosky (Ret.) U.S. Army, Infantry is a true story that begins right in the middle of the action. It is 1944, World War II, and a parachute jump into German-held France has gone terribly wrong.
Edward is, by any definition, a hero. The son of Polish immigrants, he grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania during the Great Depression. When a broken leg ended his baseball career, he joined the Army. Two years later he joined the 506th Parachute Regiment and went overseas with the 101st Airborne Division.
A natural-born leader, his career spanned three decades and three wars. He was a platoon leader during the night drop on Normandy on D-Day. He was a company commander at the Battle of the Bulge during the defense against numerically superior enemy forces at Bastogne.
During the Korean War, he volunteered for the 40th Infantry Division and commanded a rifle company on a steep, frozen ridge facing Chinese positions. With the 502nd Airborne in Germany, his men caused quite a stir by capturing a Green Beret unit. He also served in Vietnam, and retired in 1971.
The prewar portion of the book is probably more interesting to a fellow veteran than to this reader, but by letting us know how Edward Mehosky was raised and trained, it sets the stage for what follows. The story definitely picks up when it moves to Europe. Once that happens, it never lets up.
My advice is, go visit the website and read the first three chapters free. If, like me, you get hooked, you'll buy the book.
Above and Beyond.......2002-03-30
The Story Of A Soldier, by Ivan Paul Mehosky is a wonderful first person account of a heroic officer who knew how to fight and get the better of the enemy, and knew how to prepare men for war so they could fight as a team with the proper attitude, inflict great damage on the enemy, and have a chance to survive the hell of combat. Mehosky's creed, "you fight like you train, and repetition of tasks equal confidence," saw this echoed in his words countless times to his men, "in war, there is no simulation!" Like their leader, Mehosky's men were tough, motvated, confident, and smart, paratroop soldiers who were some of our best ever to fight in battle against well-trained foes. Some of the descriptions of his experiences and survival are astonishing as well as stirring and vivid. Lt. Mehosky's account of his heroic rescue of two wounded soldiers under intense enemy mortar and small arms fire in front of Carentan, France was bravery above and beyond the call of duty that truely merits our nation's highest honors. There are accounts I have never seen in other books, acounts I want to read again and again and ponder. This well written book should be read by all ages-young and old. It will stir your heart and imagination! You won't be disappointed.
The Story of a Soldier.......2002-03-22
The Story of a Soldier is definately worth reading. Ivan Mehosky has written a fantasic book in the style of Stephen Ambrose. Once you start reading you won't want to put it down til the end. Covering the period from 1940 to 1971 with a major focus on World War 2 Paratroopers in action.
Mr. Mehosky has done an excellant job of telling the story of his father's military career as handed down to him from his father. As you read the book you can't help but think of Mr. Mehosky of the 506th P.I.R. as having alot in common with Major Dick Winters of "Band of Brothers" fame.
If you're looking for an excellant book on World War 2 Paratroopers....This is it!
Must Read!.......2002-01-09
If you enjoyed Ambrose's Band of Brothers and Webster's Parachute Infantry, you'll certainly enjoy this one! It gives a neat insight to Camp Toccoa b/f the enlisted men got there. It inspires anyone to stay the course, no matter what. Col. Mehosky shows that honor, duty and courage are time-honored.
What greater love.......2002-01-02
A son has brought to light a father's deserved place in US military history! This book is a must read for anyone interested in the role of the Airborne in World War II or an interestingly detailed look at a successful military career from beginning training as an enlisted man to the rank of Colonel. The combination story lines of honor, country, bravery and love of family do not interfere with each other but instead compliment and come together in a book difficult to put down until the last page.

Excellent!.......2007-03-30
I found this book to be an excellent resource for a parent lost in the sea of ADD/ADHD information. The author's conservative approach is sensible and educated. I also appreciate the subtle spiritual insight he offers which helps the reader understand some very positive aspects of ADD. This book has become my main resource while we deal with this situation.
A concerned adult with ADHD.......2006-02-28
I am an adult with ADHD inatintive type. I have struggled all my life with this condition. Howevere, I have managed to earn a BA in psychology and I am currently working on a masters degree. Because of my expierences in psychology classes I know something about scientific research and empirical evidence. This book was a major dissapointment to me because it lacks the simple scholary research to prove the claims made by Dr Lawless. I am afraid this book is nothing more then modernday snake-oil that will cause more harm then good.
This book is so full of pseudo-science that I fear it may cause a great deal of harm to children and adults with ADHD. Dr. Lawless is a psychologist and should now how to read the scientifice research on the subject found in peer reviewed journals. While, I believe that the chemeicals in the foods we eat are a major cause of illnesses, ADHD and obesity, There is little scientific evidence that add is caused by diet. However, their maybe more evidence in the future. One of his clames of red dye has been proven completly false. Another one his claims about magnet theropy are so out of the scientific mainstream that he comes of as a snakeoils salesman. Please do not buy this book. If you want reliable information by on of the Driven to Distraction books.
Response to Concerned Mom.......2005-11-08
Concerned Mom,
Before 86-ing this book, look at your own source, which is 5 years old. Also consider that the vast majority of the psychiatric profession in Europe believes ADD is a figment of the American psychiatric community's imagination. If they're right, anyone who believes ADD is a genuine disorder is a pseudoscientist, whether they believe it can be conclusively diagnosed or not.
In addressing ADD and ADHD Dr. Phil and Frank have both maintained that a thorough attempt at a differential diagnosis MUST be made(ruling out other learning disorders, stressors in the home, other possible disorders or chemical imbalances, depression, etc.) PRIOR to reaching a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. They also insist that this must be done in CONJUNCTION with an EEG. The EEG reading alone is persuasive, but not diagnostic. If they have claimed to the contrary then they are going against everything they have maintained in their shows addressing this issue.
You may agree or disagree with them and I'm sure some qualified professionals disagree with them as well. That's not uncommon in the medical community, and it certainly doesn't make this pseudo science.
If their claim were simply that the EEG ALONE were diagnostic in the absence of a thorough examination of patient history, etc., then you're beef would be legitimate. But why the hostility? These days children are often overmedicated based solely on the reommendation of tired parents or teachers. By contrast Dr. Phil is advocating a careful thorough screening prior to reaching that diagnosis, and consideration of all available therapies, not medical therapy alone. At the same time the screening process he's advocating will no doubt help some people who haven't been diagnosed but should have been finally get the help they need. So many are written of an depressed or looking for excuses for a lifelong struggle with frustration and attention span (my wife for example), but thanks to a rigorous screening process followed by a careful neurological exam including an EEG, most of the red herrings can finally be ruled out and effective treatment can begin. This is a total middle of the road position between throwing pills out willy nilly and just telling people to get over their disorder. Who loses here? And where is the argument that the EEG IN CONJUNCTION WITH a careful differential diagnosis, detailed patient history and examination of past behavior, academic struggles, etc., can't be diagnostic of this disorder? Some may disagree, but what's new about that?
The three star rating is because I haven't finished reading the book.
PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING!.......2005-10-27
There are many great ideas presented in this book about dealing with your add child, BUT the chapter on meds is completely off base. Let me preface the following with MY opinion (I am not an MD or an expert) that children with ADD need a team approach in helping them deal with the condition (if you choose to call it one) and there is a place for meds for many kids, BUT it is only a piece of the puzzle. Parents, teachers, family members, Md's, and behavioral specialists are all crucial. I happen to work indirectly with many of the world thought leaders and experts on ADD (ie. Joseph Beiderman, Mass General Hospital, Boston MA/ Harvard Medical School, ... look up his credentials). First Dr. Frank Lawlis is not an MD, this means he has not been to medical school- that is not to say he isn't a great psychologist, just that he HAS NOT and DOES NOT write prescriptions for these meds and has NO first hand experience with directly managing these meds himself. In this book there are many things that are completely false regarding ADD meds. For example he states that they only work for about 50% of kids. FALSE Let me cite 3 credible sources that disputes this (notice in the book that he does not talk about HIS credible source)
1. "approx 70% of patients respond to the first stimulant agent administered with resulting improvement in their ADHD symptoms." - Practical Considerations in Stimulant Drug Selection for the ADHD Patient- Efficacy, Potency and Titration Beiderman, Today's Therapeutic Trends, 02'
2. "Improvement occurred in 65-75% of 5,899 patients randomized to stimulants." - Practice Parameter for the Use of Stimulant Medication in the Treatment of Children, Adolescents, and Adults, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Feb02'
3. "At least 80% of children will respond to one of the stimulants if they are tried in a systemic way." Clinical Practice Guideline: Treatment of the School-Aged Child with ADHD, Published in American Acedemy of Pediatrics, Oct 01'.
All of these quotes are credible and are opinions based on evidence-based medicine from the experts. Lawlis also states that there has been little research in children and that most studies have been done on adults and rats/mice. This is Completely False! The Journal noted above, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (that was a review of "161 randomized controlled trials that have been published encompassing 5 preschool, 150 school-age, 7 Adolescent, and 9 adult studies" Where does Dr. Lawlis get his information?
The review noted above by the American Acedemy of Pediatrics, identified for analysis 2405 citations, 92 reports, and 78 different studies. This is American Acedemy of Pediatrics- They are only interested in children and adolescents! Not Rats, Mice, and Adults.
These are the most credible Medical Journals published. These are not the biased trials sponsored by big pharma. The information in these Journals is taken very seriously by Pediatricians and Child Psychiatrists, and is heavily relied upon by these professionals.
Lastly, he also states that these drugs are identical to cocaine in their affect on the brain. This is not true, they have similarities, but by NO-Means identical. Yes it is true that stimulant medications can be abused and can also be addictive, but some of the newer formulations of these meds have lessened their abuse and addictive potential by altering the speed at which the drug is released into the bloodstream thereby somewhat flattening the curve (Cocaine use produces a curve that is almost straight up-this is what gives the "high") The most common way for these drugs to be abused is by crushing them and snorting them (which allows for fast absorption and steep curve), and some of the newer meds are crush resistant and/or cannot be turned into a fine enough substance to be snorted. There has also been data published that shows a DECREASE not increase in drug abuse for patients who have taken stimulants. It is believed that kids who are treated (drug treatment and otherwise) are less likely to associate with kids who are failing academically/socially and who are more likely to be using drugs. (This is not to say that high all high achievers abstain from using OR that ALL children who are failing ARE using) It is just a point that kids who are treated are more likely to be focused on school and their responsibilities and are less likely to be involved in drug use. Kids who are failing in school academically/socially are often looked at as outcasts and are often looked down upon by peers, teachers, and family, and this can cause a child to look for an escape... sometimes drugs. Children who Do benefit from stimulant medication sometimes have more self-esteem because of their success, and certainly less scrutiny from peers, teachers etc.
Lastly, Lawlis tells a story about a man who died from long-term stimulant medication. I am not going to say that this did not happen, but I will say that stimulants have been used since the 1950's, and the medical community agrees that they are safe when managed properly. The medical community and FDA have pulled MANY medications that were deemed unsafe from the markets (many times against the will of BIG Pharma) and the stimulants would not have remained on the market for OVER 50 YEARS, if stories like this were common or the least bit likely.
I am not at all stating that stimulant meds are the answer because they are not, but they can be a small piece of the puzzle that is helping these kids with ADD. The book is full of great ideas and approaches to ADD, but he is not accurate about the stimulant medications. Parents who see value in them should not feel ashamed and or frightened by what he says because most of it is just not accurate. Good luck and I hope this was helpful.
Tantrums gone with EFAs.......2005-09-29
My son had been diagnosed with ADD by psychiatry in kindergarten. BUT his terrible tantrums from age 1 to 8, (throwing himself on the floor, banging his head, screaming, hitting, demolishing his room) have stopped since he took Essential FAtty Acids. The teacher literally had all good things to say about him a month after he started taking these nutrition supplements. Where he couldn't get up in time for school at 9:00 am, he could now get up at 7 for a shower. Our family no longer had to walk on egg shells around him, he was more predicable and fell asleep at a good time every night. He could organize his world to the point that he finished whole projects thoroughly and thoughtfully on his own in grade 5 and 6. This solution came to our family through prayer and this was God's answer I believe. I hope you find your answer.

The Recipies are Failures.......2007-05-12
I moved from sea level to over 7000 ft. I was a very talented baker. But none of my sea level recipes work at the new altitude. I was hoping this book would help me find a way to adjust my recipes. It does not . The 4 recipes I did try from this book tasted like dirt. I did follow the recipe fully and had high hopes. I moved from the USA to the mountains of Mexico. Not only does it take longer to cook any thing at a higher altitude, flavor is lost at a higher altitude and needs adjustment. This book does not explain that.
I can not tell anyone to purchase this cook book and expect to be able to bake successfully at high altitudes.
Don't bother........2007-04-08
Me and my wife moved to Colorado from sea level, and were big bakers using Betty Crocker baking books. We have tried many of the recipes in this book and have yet to come across one that tastes even halfway decent. We live at 9100 feet, and there are many recipes in the book that don't require any further adjustments for higher altitudes (so they say), and we've tried a few of the cake and cookie recipes, but none of them worked, the cakes flopped, and the cookies always flattened out completely. It was hit or miss with this book, and that's aside from the awful taste of the recipes. They claim that all the recipes will work to 6500 ft elevation, and higher altitudes require further changes, but even making the changes they have in the book under the recipe's, a lot of the recipes failed.
Save your money and get any baking book and make adjustments for high altitude, using any of the adjustments you can readily find on-line for your altitude.
We were very disappointed in this cookbook.
Half and Half.......2007-02-03
Some recipes are just awful tasting and some recipes are just amazing. All the recipes by Melissa Craven are so good. There is a recipe of Chococlate Chocolate Chip Cookies that is always a hit at the parties and people beg me to make them all the time.
Finally a normal looking cookie!.......2006-01-15
I live in the S.CA mountains at 6000 ft, and since moving here I have been at a loss in terms of turning out a decent oatmeal cookie. I have made several attempts, with different recipes, but to no avail. The end result was, sadly, always the same: a flat disc.
I had almost given up on my cookie baking when I found this book. I just finished baking up the oatmeal cookie recipe, and they turned out perfectly...just like what I remember from my old days in Orange County. There didn't seem to be enough of the ingredients including sugar and flour when I was making the recipe, but what do I know, the recipe turned out a beautifully plump batch of cookies. I am going to try a cake next and report back. What a thrill to successfully bake again...
Not sure they know what they're talking about..........2005-10-07
I did find this book helpful for bread baking tips, but as far as teaching a thing or two about how to adjust recipes for high altitude, I haven't really found what I need. It talks about some differences in baking at high altitude and sea level, but doesn't show you how to adjust other recipes to make up for the differences. Maybe I just can't find it? I also made cupcakes from this book and cupcakes from a non-high-altitude cookbook and the ones from this book were dense, hard and icky. I live at over 5,000 feet and thought these recipes would work better here than average recipes.

A truly magnificent manuscript on the African wild!.......1998-10-13
This is a "must" for all those who have been on an African safari, or who are contemplating this magical journey. This manuscript is practical, offering tips for first-timers, and beautifully written so that the reader will understand the animals' behavior. In addition, there are over 700 gorgeous photographs, obviously taken by a photographer who understands his subject matter. Indeed, one need not go far to read others' works. The author includes excerpts from Hemingway, Dinesen, Stanley and the like - those who fell in love in and with Africa. The truly adventuresome! The author also includes excerpts from his own diary which enlightens the reader to the humorous side of the African safari experience. It is truly the ultimate book!

Customer Reviews:
Knitting in the Old Way- Priscilla Gibson-Roberts.......2007-08-24
I had a copy of this book many years ago and always regretted losing it. I'm delighted to have this updated version. Gibson-Roberts gives a good deal of basic information about traditional knitting- not line by line from instructions but from basic principles and a little preparation. There are plans for a huge variety of garments from around the world. I'd recommend it for a spinner-and-knitter (such as myself),or any competent knitter with an interest in folk or historical wear, or in making one of a kind garments.
A Must Have.......2007-04-11
This is a book to free your knitterly soul. The authors start by helping you take baby steps, explaining carefully. Then, before you know it, you are skipping along without a pattern, making whatever you want, and making it fit. The technical aspects are flawless, the inspirational parts are, well, inspirational. Even if you have no intention of knitting without following a pattern, this book will explain the differnt constructions in such a way that it will make you a better knitter. I buy this as a gift frequently, and it has always been well recieved.
Freeing yourself from the tyranny of patterns.......2007-03-15
I brought this book because I wanted to be able to design my own knitwear and because I wanted to explore some of the design concepts used in Iceland, the Faroe and Northern British islands. The author's clear and practical advice soon got me underway. It gave me enough to work out my proportions, measurements, yardage (metres) and the basic construction layouts for what I wanted to do. I'm now well underway, knitting an Icelandic style sweater but using Ukrainian cross stitch as the motif. there aren't any colour pictures in this book but that is probably a good thing because it leaves you free to imagine and create an end design. The author assumes some basic knowledge of knitting but even so gives a good range of techniques for casting on, knitting in to the front and back of the stich etc as well as a brief history of knitting. The only other book you might want to accompany this is a compendium of traditional stitch designs such as moss stitch, various cable stitches and fairisle designs.
Knitting in the Old Way.......2006-10-11
I don't own this book....YET!!! It is definitely going to be on my short list of knitting books to purchase (after I buy A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G. Walker).
This book is an excellent reference on how to design numerous sweaters without using a pattern (sounds familiar...Elizabeth Zimmermann)...or the old way before people had written patterns to work from.
There are no photographs in this book, but the writing is concise and the drawings and diagrams are simple and easy to understand.
This is a wonderful book to purchase if you're finally ready to branch out and start designing your own sweaters rather than following a pattern that you saw in a book or magazine. A definite must have.
Just Buy the Book.......2006-07-02
If you are more than a scarf knitter and want to tailor or design your own sweaters, quit wasting your time reading reviews, and buy this book. You need it and you will enjoy it!
If you have ever picked up a pattern and wanted to change a sleeve or a neckline, this could be the book for you. If you have a pattern and the perfect yarn but you can't get the gauge no matter what you do, this could be the book for you. If you want to design your own sweater and are challenged by the fit at the armhole, this is your salvation. If you are a size 14 and the perfect pattern goes up to a size 8, this could be what you are seeking. Remember however, that this is an older book and it is not the answer to "how can I make this 32" bust on the Teva Durham pattern fit my 40" figure?" A lot of the innovative new designers use techniques that this book does not address. But what it does address, it does well. You could learn a thing or two; I did.

SOOO helpful! 100's of mom's advice at your fingertips!.......2006-11-12
This book was SO helpful to me! There are so many different opinions. This was especially helpful to me transitioning to solid foods and hearing all of the mom's different advice. You just can't get this kind of advice anywhere else. I also used SEVERAL of the suggestions on each of our trips with our son. It's practical, it's from real moms who have been there. And no matter how great a mom I think I am, there were ideas I wouldn't have ever thought of! MUST HAVE!
Wonderful resource!.......2005-10-25

My mother gave this book to me when I was having trouble putting my then-newborn son to sleep (he was only 1 week old). I read some of the tips, and quite a few of them worked. I won't say which ones, though. Also, I took some advice from the travel section about sending stuff ahead to your destination. That really worked. There's lots of other helpful information here, from clothing to diapering. All in all, it is a great book to have around. I would definitely recommend this to all of you who are expecting your first child.
Not that good.......2003-03-24
This book is full of unscientifically proven advices. Some of those advices and hints must have come from long experience, but there is no clear distiction for the layman which one works and which don't. In addition to this, the language used in this book is addressing an American audience. It uses a lot of American slang that might not be familiar to non-Americans.
Great Baby Tips for the New Moms.......2002-08-21
I found this book helpful and insightful. What's great is that the book is a compilation of what other mothers are doing. If something doesn't work, you can go back and try someone else's suggestion.

"Soldiers without uniforms".......2004-06-20
Search for Love is the biography of renowned Hungarian artist, Gyorgy Ruzicskay and his loving wife, Etelka. During a tree planting ceremony in Israel, a speaker referred to them as: "Soldiers without uniforms, heroes who made an oath to hold up the sanctity of the human life and the flag of humanism." The author, Ladislau Hajos is the nephew of the famous artist and relays his uncle's story of heroism in the face of the Nazi invasion, unselfish feats of compassion and humanitarianism. Etelka Ruzicskay was the driving force behind the man.
History buffs will enjoy the well- documented descriptions of life in Hungary and Romania during the 1940's. The book chronicles the long legal battle over the disposition of Ruzicskay's estate after the death of his wife and the author's determination that justice be served.
The author was born in Romania and fled the communist regime settling in America with his wife and son. His lifelong promise to bring his uncle's story to the public has been fulfilled in Search for Love.

Book Description
The Stracheys were an exceptionally intelligent and unusual family, prominent in imperial administration, science, and feminism in the nineteenth century, and in the suffrage movement, women's education, and the bringing of new approaches to sexuality in the twentieth century. Bombay to Bloomsbury examines the lives of Lytton Strachey, a well-known member of the Bloomsbury set, his nine siblings, and his parents. Richard Strachey worked in India, marrying Jane, the daughter of the Indian Chief Justice, in 1859. A successful imperial couple, they were progressive, following the ideas of Auguste Comte and J. S. Mill, and the teachings of science. Their ten children were born over a period of 27 years and reflect the development and changes in a Victorian society moving to modernity. The richness of their letters provides a fascinating picture of a large, complex, and diverse family where attitudes to the family name, gender tensions, differing views on sexuality, ideas on modernity, and varying degrees of support for feminism all played a part. Dick Strachey, the eldest son, had an unsuccessful military career in India but a loving marriage, whereas Oliver announced to horrified parents that he wished to learn the piano and give music lessons, eventually finding success as a code-breaker in both world wars. Elinor, married to a man of wealth and position, devoted her life exclusively to family and social life, whilst Ralph, Chief Surveyor in India, married a woman who suffered emotional and nervous collapses and was unable to manage a family. Pippa, a full-time suffrage organizer and, in all but name, head of the family, combined the Victorian devoted single daughter with the twentieth-century independent career woman, and James, a homosexual in adolescence, married Alix, one of the Bloomsbury cropheads who embraced sexual experimentation, psychoanalysis, and new patterns of domestic life. The remaining children, including Lytton, all had lives no less absorbing, and it is the examination of these lives, as well as relating the issues which they faced to wider society, which make Barbara Caine's study so captivating and intriguing.
