Book Description
Gutierre Diaz de Gamez entered the service of Pero Niño, count of Buelna, in 1402, when they were both about 23, and served as head of his military household for nearly fifty years. He began a chronicle of his master's deeds in about 1431, and it is this eyewitness account of the life of a knight, both in war and peace, which is translated here. It is written in praise of his master, but beneath the veneer of hero-worship a good deal of the reality of a knight's existence shows through: even in the prologue, Diaz de Gamez gives a bitter picture of the hardships of a military campaign: 'Knights who are at the wars eat their bread in sorrow; their ease in weariness and sweat... Mouldy bread or biscuit, meat cooked or uncooked, water from a pond or a butt, poor sleep with their armour still on their backs, the enemy an arrow-shot off...' On the other hand, he can evoke the glories of a tournament, in which his master excelled, and his triumphs as a military commander both by sea and land. It is a story full of colour, adventure and romance, and one which deserves its place in the chronicles of chivalry.

Practicing and Other Stories
A Memoir
Ralph G. DePalma, MD
Xlibris Corporation
(...)
These are stories, good stories, of another age in medicine. It was an age without intensive care medicine, blood gas analysis, advanced radiographic techniques, female medical students, Medicaid and malpractice. It was an age of house calls in a dark suit and tie. The black bag, a symbol, and the badge of the profession contained real substance: penicillin, Thorazine, a stethoscope of course and batteries for the otoscope. The best stories are of that practice, its diagnostic and therapeutic triumphs, its everyday work as told by a natural storyteller. In those dear, dead times the doctor formed his opinions using the techniques of physical diagnosis with no short cuts. He checked his results, its successes and failures over bowling, not golf, with general practice doctors who, like the author were engaged in the trench war medicine of family practice.
But the author, unlike his friends the GP's eventually traveled far from home, the Bronx, through Columbia College, and the New York University Medical school. He left home and the Bronx but retained the influence, the warmth of his upbringing in a Catholic, first generation Italian home. In his travels, he encountered and was shaped by the societal, the sexual and the medical revolutions of the last half of the twentieth century. He lived and flourished in the ups and downs of surgical residency, practicing family medicine in an isolated American military community in southern Spain and excelling in academic surgical practice. These are the stories of Practicing and Other Stories.
In this informative autobiographical saga the stories spin on through University life in Cleveland, Chairmanships of surgical departments as diverse as Washington DC and Reno, Nevada. These were as different from one another as the distance between them.
We sense the author's restlessness as he gains successes but fails to find the grail that his fruitful mind seeks. We sense that even now as Chief Surgeon of the giant and far flung Veterans Administration there is more to this tale. We hope that there will be more stories. Perhaps not about practicing but instead about living. We will look forward to them as presented by this humorous, thoughtful, delightfully old-fashioned real doctor and surgeon.

Book Description
Practicing Romance sets out to re-tell the story of Hawthorne's career, arguing that he is best understood as a cultural analyst of extraordinary acuity, ambitious to reshape--in a sense to cure--the community he addresses. Through readings attentive to narrative strategy and alert to the emerging middle-class culture that was his audience, the book defines and describes Hawthornian Romance in a new way: not, in customary fashion, as the definitive instance of a peculiarly American genre, but as a narrative practice designed to expose and restage the covert drama that affiliates us to our community. Hawthorne's fiction thus recovers for its readers, through the interpretive independence it teaches, a freer, more lucid, more critical relation to the community we inhabit, and the cultural engagement romance enacts in turn rescues Hawthorne from the confining marginality that the writer's career had threatened to confer. From the book's distinctive account of his narrative tactics, especially his deployment of the voices and attitudes--authoritarian or democratic, entrapping or freeing--that give shape to his ideological terrain, Hawthorne emerges as a daring reinventor of the novel's cultural role.

I wish I could give it 0 stars........2007-08-04
Wow, this book is writen in an intensly negative manner. It will tell you (supposedly) why you have these issues and make it clear that you have issues, and that's as far as it gets. It focuses ONLY on your childhood exsperieces and saying that you were not raised properly and then leaves you hanging. Nevermind that I truley think that a good handful of the "your childhood's to blame" hypothesises are crap, even if they are the reason, this book tells you absolutly no way to counter act those feelings. I buy books alllll the time and rarely felt like I have wasted my money as I get at least something out of it. Well, this is the first book that I feel like I've wasted my money on. Heck, I have a bodyways book I just picked up that are helping me much more deal with my emotions then this book does. Gah!!
Learning a Lot.......2006-02-24
This book taught me a lot about myself. It's worth buying.
different color sign post........2006-02-06
The Peipers give a psycholgical account on presence. They are talking about the same things that people like Eckhart Tolle and Pema chodron talk about but they put their own physicians slant on it which I guess can be OK. All paths lead to Rome.
It's just a different color sign post.
Though one thing that really irritaes me is that they mention in this book that when their patients start to cancel appointments it means they are avoiding their healing.
I have to say that this is more a maniplation and power play of therapists than anything else.
The thing that puts this book on a lower level than that of Tolle and Chodron, is the they claim that people need them as opposed to their own presence and God. Though I'm sure it will reach the right people
Practical and Inspirational.......2005-09-26
I have been so discouraged in my life trying to make changes. This is the first self-help book that has really helped me. First, it described me and my problems exactly both in relation to my work and also my attempts to stay healthy and fit. Then it gave me really down-to-earth suggestions, most importantly including what to do when I hit a wall. For the first time I have been able to get past my failures and keep going on my resolutions. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!!
Identifies a problem but..........2005-09-20
This is a quick read. The reason I picked it up was trying to understand why a bully at work had me down. On pg 224 the matter is addressed, "Frequently there is someone in the workplace who is snappish, constantly angry or agitated, or who has an emotional hair trigger. The addiction to unhappiness can cause you to take other people's grouchiness personally, when in fact it's not about you but about them. If these difficult coworkers or managers treat everyone else the same way, there is certainly no reason to feel particularly singled out or attacked. By taking their behavior personally, you gratify your addiction to unhappiness and ruin an otherwise good day."
Okay... I feel like I've been given a pat on the head and told to run along.
Every problem outlined is blamed on one's parents and sends you back to their previous book, Smart Love, to understand how the failures of your parents are to blame for everything from eating addictions to my problem with a bully.
Having said that, I think they have identified a real issue - it is mysterious but some people do shoot themselves in the foot when life looks good - but this book is a disappointment if you think it will help you overcome this tendency. The Piepers tout the magic of their therapy sessions which may indeed be true, however this book recycles typical self-help ideas: make a plan for change and be vigilant that you don't backslide, but mostly they repeat over and over again the idea that you are either preventing yourself from achieving happiness or you are actively choosing to cause your own unhappiness.
Book Description
Artist and raconteur Steadman takes us on a witty, irreverent tour through the strange world of wine and winemaking-from France, Italy, Germany, and Portugal to Bulgaria, Australia, and California. “The first exciting wine book in a long time” (Frank Prial, New York Times). Illustrated throughout in full color.
Customer Reviews:
Trampling Out the Vintage.......2007-04-23
Ralph Steadman is a very wicked person. Has no respect
for nothing, this guy. Anybody who could do drawings
for Hunter Thompson couldn't possibly get serious
enough to do justice to wine, could he?
The Grapes of Ralph is a semi-serious, very funny
look at the world of wine by a guy with a truly enviable
talent for illustration. His drawings range from wistful
to wildly exaggerated. The text, which is sometimes as
funny as the drawings contains a good bit of information
along with the humor. I bought two copies, one for
the bookshelf and one to cut up and frame in the
winecellar.
--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the novel bang BANG. ISBN 9781601640005
Ralph, wine & pen.......2001-12-03
Ralph Steadman is a wonderful artistic talent. In this book he combines his love of wine, humor, and his comedic illustrations. If you are a true wine lover (i.e. someone who just doesn't take the whole wine tasting thing too seriously, but knows what she or he likes) you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is also a wonderful gift for wine-lovin' friends.
Enjoy!
Book Description
On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend is the critically acclaimed collection of regional travel guides that offer detailed reviews of the best bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, and resorts that welcome dogs, as well as fun things to do with them once you arrive.
The Habgoods ask a number of questions and perform extensive research before even considering a lodging for inclusion. They then head out on the road to visit one. Their insiders perspective on each establishment is unmatched, as is their ability to accurately assess the attitude of the staff toward people who travel with their dogs. As a result, readers learn about the best rooms and amenities, the cuisine (for both canines and people), and any intriguing activities on the premises or in the area.
The Habgoods dont depend on paw, diamond, or star ratings. Instead, travelers form their own opinions after reading the detailed two-page descriptions. The Habgoods never accept fees for inclusion into their books, ensuring their assessments remain independent and based on merit.
Their reviews are so personal and detailed that the Los Angeles Times commented that "these aren't just books for dog owners, but any traveler." Moreover, Pamela Brandt of the New York Daily News feels that, "the authors have a far more appealing approach than other animal-friendly accommodation guides: full and very inviting descriptions instead of the usual name/address lists."
Customer Reviews:
A Winning Combination-Highly Recommended!.......1999-03-22
We've been fans of the On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend series for many years and have books for every region. The New England guide is so accurate and detailed that we know ahead of time which room to reserve, how it will be decorated, and even what we can expect for breakfast. It is clear that the authors visit every place they review-their insights and perspectives are that personal. Every place we've stayed has been a treasure. The quality of the accommodations and the authors' expertise is a winning combination. Highly recommended!
Great source of B&Bs in New England for dog lovers.......1998-03-19

Customer Reviews:
Have they been there?.......2006-07-15
I spent any vacation time I had with my black lab, and therefore own almost 20 pet travel directories acquired over a period of 15 years. Each is unique in it's own way, and I believe the Pets Welcome - NE and NY edition to be one of the first directories that focused on two things that made the book stand apart from others. First, it was a regional book, and second, the listings were more upscale than the usual chain hotel listings. However, the batting average for the locales was about .30 at best. The directions were terrible in all cases, and the management of the b&b's were really quite indifferent. But what really was amazing is that I drove around for two hours trying to locate one b&b in particular, called them for more directions so they knew I was on my way, arrived after driving for more than ten hours and was told the kitchen was closed because it was a slow night! They didn't even offer anything to eat and advised me that I would have to wait until morning. The next b&b was only slightly better. Both locations did not have any dog friendly walking areas contiguous to the property. So I go back to - Have they (the authors) been there?
Very informative.......2000-08-25
A great book for the dog or cat lover who would like to take their pet on vacation with them. It gives tips on car & plane trips. With over 200 pages of hotels, and inns, phone #'s,e-mails,prices. There are very informative descriptions of the accommodations as well as the surrounding areas. 4 paws!
Not much meat to the matter!.......2000-04-15
This book has very little substance behind the nice cover! I found it not particularly helpful or useful in any way, except as a extremely basic list of hotels/inns etc. that may accept pets... the book includes extremely generic information like you might find on a hotel flyer or brochure. There is no specific information about the inn/hotel's environment for pets and why in the world you would want to take your pet there in the first place! There are some lists of various parks, but no descriptions or reviews. It almost feels as if the author looked on a map for green areas and then listed a few of them in the book to make it longer... A similar and much better book is "On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend-New England" by Dawn and Robert Habgoo. (Now that's a book worth every penny and more!)
Book Description
So long, bulky pattern books! Farewell, crinkled photocopies! Knitting to Go makes it a cinch to knit in trains, planes, and automobiles, at church, at school, bellied up to the bar . . . wherever you find your crafty self. Inside this portable deck you'll find 25 patterns that run the gamut from chic (Circle Wrap or Mohair Hoodie) to gifty (Baby Blocks and the Men's Sweater) to homey (Cozy Throw Blanket and Chenille Pillow). Each card is easy to use, with step-by-step directions and a beautiful color photograph of the finished project.
Customer Reviews:
Quality and Convenience.......2006-09-23
This deck of knitting pattern cards is convenient and handy - knitters can easily tuck the 4x6-inch pattern cards into a project bag instead of hassling with copy print outs, or larger books. The patterns themselves range from simple beginner blankets and scarves, and move into more detailed garment patterns, each labeled with a level of difficulty in the top right corner.
The deck is a perfect place for a beginning knitter to start making accessories and garments. For a more ambitious and/or experienced knitter, the deck offers a starting point to experiment with textures, lace, and advanced techniques with simple constructions and lines.
While I love this deck and have already made 2 items from it, I have only one complaint: I wish the cards included schematic drawings and measurements of the knitwear. One can knit without them, but schematics are a good visualization tool that many knitters use quite frequently.
So many beautiful patterns, and so convenient!.......2006-07-21
This was one of the very first knitting books I bought as a beginner, and it remains one of my favorites. It has so many nice patterns of things you would actually want to wear. Shawls, simple sweaters, several baby items, a great felted tote, and some really nice scarf patterns. The little cards are perfect for just throwing them in your knitting bag, without dragging around a heavy book. I found the patterns very clear and easy to follow, however, there aren't any schematics. As a bonus, the photography is just beautiful!
Plain English, patterns on cards, make easy toting and use.......2006-04-20
Kris Percival puts together over twenty easy knitting patterns in KNITTING TO GO: 25 CHIC AND EASY PATTERNS - but there's more to this than the usual book format: KNITTING TO GO holds the patterns on cards which feature easy step-by-step instructions in English rather than the usual knitter's abbreviations. This serves two purposes: it's a snap to select a card/project and use it on the fly, and it is much more inviting to newcomers to knitting. Add a lovely color photo of finished results on each card and you have a truly unique, appealing set.
Excellent!.......2006-01-07
I love this item. I purchased it a B&N sight unseen. I thought the idea was great and it is. All the patterns are awesome. I already ordered yarn to make the two-tone felted bag. I like the size of the cards. I purchased it because the patterns were all on cards I could travel with. A must!

Customer Reviews:
a smorgasbord of information for the literate parent.......2004-09-28
Cheryl Coon's book is a smorgasbord of information for the literate parent. I have seen nothing like it in my years as a psychologist for children. It provides a `natural' approach to understanding the myriad situations that a parent and child will, hopefully, face together. Nothing seems to bond a child and parents so much as reading a favorite book together again and again.
A sparkling resource that belongs on every educator's desk!.......2004-09-22
How many times in my career as a teacher or librarian has someone asked if there was a children's book that dealt with a specific problem? Talk about handy-dandy! Teachers, librarians, physicians, counselors and anyone who works with children will find that this is one of the most dog-eared references on their desk, and parents will become instantly expert in prescribing their own bibliotherapy. An approachable guide that deals with issues in a cheerful way.
A valuable addition to a family library.......2004-09-09
Stories are a great way to help children with their concerns. This book is a thorough guide to children's literature, arranged by topics. Issues addressed range from the common - such as potty training and sibling jealousy to the more serious issues of dealing with loss of a loved one. I would recommend it as a good book to have on your shelf to refer to when you children or their friends encounter some of these problems.
Raise A Resilient Child!.......2004-09-07
This concerned mother has done a massive amount of research that other parents can benefit from. "Books to Grow With" should be endorsed by PTA groups, Parent's magazine, Gerber's, and the Head Start Program, to name only a few..." Cheryls' book will help a child develop resiliency and good coping skills.
A great guide to books that can help kids.......2004-09-06
You will find countless suggestions for fine picture books that can help kids, and the adults in their lives, deal with sometimes troubling real-life situations. A great guide to good reading!

Book Description
The Life and Art of Athos Menaboni is a straightforward biography of the artist. Menaboni is widely regarded as one of the world's finest illustrators and painters of bird life, and hailed by wildlife lovers, art collectors, and orinthologists alike as the 20th century Audobon, but unlike Audubon, he worked mostly from live bird studies. Spanning a sixty-year career, Menaboni's work professed his love for the more than 150 American birds he painted in their natural surroundings. These delightful interpretations, rendered with integrity and love, capture the wonderful colors and details of nature. Throughout his career, his technical innovations evolved and developed. Menaboni was a tremendous experimenter, and explored a wide range of media: painting on canvas, silk, glass, masonite, wood panels, gesso-covered board, and mirrors. He also experimented with different textures, using tiles, eggshells, watercolor, Italian glass, and pencil in his work.
Menaboni was an artist for art's sake, and shunned the spotlight of publicity and fame. Thus, he is largely unknown today, despite the excellence and size of his ouvre.
Customer Reviews:
Important Work on an Important Artist.......2005-12-12
It's high time someone turned the spotlight on Athos Menaboni. This is a well-researched and beautifully realized book. The color plates are exquisite, artfully showing off the painstaking precision that Menaboni lovingly employed on his subjects. Thomas Kinkade may be the Painter of Light, but Athos Menaboni is the Painter of Iridescence. Not even Audubon could best him at it.
Roger Tory Peterson lauded him as our greatest bird artist and Robert Woodruff commissioned a new Menaboni painting every year to adorn his Christmas cards. The Smithsonian calls its collection of those cards the most important Christmas card collection in American history.
A must-read for all lovers of wildlife, nature, and Who's Who in Atlanta society.
A Beautiful Book.......2002-01-25
The pictures in this book are strikingly beautiful and unusual. I had not heard of Menaboni and always associated "bird art" with Audubon. I was doubly surprised to find Menaboni continued painting, while plagued with deteriorating eyesight, into his nineties. I found the book fascinating and am so glad I have it.
