Book Description

Right after Pearl Harbor, the author joined the Marines at 17. After boot camp, he went to the First Marine Division, taking part in some of the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific, including the landing on Okinawa where he was wounded. The author and others fought under terrible conditions, yet they persevered. This is the author's story of combat and of growing up.

1 out of 5 stars An orgy of self-pity........1997-10-06

This combat memoir is amazing. Most young soldiers find themselves disillusioned after their baptism of fire, but return with a new maturity. Not so George Lince. This veteran has merely catalogued a vast array of bitches, gripes and moans about his WWII experiences: his buddies were dishonest and lazy, his gear was antiquated and, yes, the food was terrible. Even worse, his father was unsympathetic and his girlfriend left him. This is not a case of combat angst; this is common whining, a display of self-pity carefully nurtured for fifty years. Even worse, the book is padded with long passages from other (and better) books. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!! You will not be able to forget this book.........1997-05-16

A new author telling us of the real war. Not only the war fought on the beach or in the foxhole but the war within himself. The shock and realization of what war really was from a 17 year old eyes. Not the John Wayne war, but the war our fathers and grandfathers fought. These men gave just as much as our founding fathers gave in the early days of the United States. This should be read so we may understand and remember the destruction war brings. These memories of his will be yours after reading this book. His words draw you in to read page after page of how this teenager survived the hell in Okinawa. Then 50 years later returning for forgiveness from the Okinawan people and receiving the love of humanity from this tiny island that shaped the authors future

Book Description

Pythagoras was more than a mathematician and philosopher in sixth-century B.C. Greece. He was also a scientist, mystic, and social reformer who, like many such figures before and after him, was killed for his convictions. This is the story of both a man and a moment when the world's wisdom began to converge into what is known as perennial philosophy. Pythagoras, communicating with priests and sages from Persia to Ireland, was perhaps the key figure in this process.

5 out of 5 stars The cover was so beautiful, people ask about this book all the time.......2005-12-19

Dear reader, first of all, there is not much information on these philosophers, so don't expect the kind of indepth information you can get on someone today. Have you ever tried to find information on Pythagoras? This book will help and does the job to get an adequate picture of this man of the ancient world. Easy to read and understand. It still sticks in my head that Pythagoras had practically a phobia of beans? Wow. Who would have guessed.

1 out of 5 stars Pythagoras "Lite".......2005-08-10

I agree with D.J. Warme's review, I only wish I had read it before buying this book. What a disappointment! This is a vapid look at the life of Pythagoras, a stale paraphasing of Iamblichus - nothing more. The authors (it took two people to write this slim volume?) seem to think a pyramid is a Platonic solid - a major mathematical faux pas (repeated several times) in a book about possibly the greatest mathematician in history. I'm looking elsewhere to find something of substance to read about Pythagoras, and you should too.

5 out of 5 stars The true Light and Soul of the West.......2005-08-05

_It came as a pleasant surprise while reading this excellent introduction to the life and teachings of Pythagoras to find that I have apparently been a Pythagorean for most of my life and didn't realize it. Perhaps this is because Pythagoras was the original western gateway of the perennial philosophy to the West (he had studied with the first of the Ionian philosophers, the Egyptian priests, the Persian Magi, and the initiates of the Hellenic Mysteries.) One of his closest disciples was even a Celtic sage. In any case, the concepts of the immortality and transmigration of the soul, spiritual evolution, the inherent value of Truth and Justice, good stewardship of community resources for the benefit of all, a Golden Mean to all things, seeking harmony with the Divine, divination and the higher meaning of numbers, the brotherhood of all humans through the sharing of a single greater body and soul- all these concepts seem like they have always been a part of me. But, above all, there was the manner that the Philosopher (he first coined the term) found no contradiction between the rational and the mystical. He was great enough to encompass both without contradiction.

_This is a well-written and designed introduction to Pythagoras and his teachings. It is divided into four main parts: The Quest for Knowledge (his early years), The Teachings, The Decline of the Pythagorean School, and The Golden Verses. There is no exegesis to the Verses so the reader may like to refer to the work of Olivet after reading them (there are at least two distinct levels of understanding to them.) There are numerous useful illustrations and diagrams, as well as a bibliography for further study. The footnotes are included in an appendix in the back. This isn't the most exhaustive scholarly study of the subject, but it is a very readable and perceptive introduction for the general student. It will remain in my permanent library.

_You can't help but find the death of the Philosopher to be especially tragic. After so many years of trying to enlighten the world, he died in exile because of the corrupt connivance of oligarchs and militarists. Yet still his light shines on through the ages- for it is the true soul of the West.

1 out of 5 stars For the magic crystal, metaphysical set........2001-11-28

I wanted a book that gave me more insight into a great thinker. A mathamatician who gave us the theorum bearing his name. What I got was a book where in the first chapter, the author says that Pythagoras may have been a direct decendent from the Gods! Went down hill from there. No information on mathematics, astronomy, geometry, physics or any of the other fields that Pythagoras studied and helped advance. Instead we get a glorified view of a cult leader and a focus on the metaphysical.

5 out of 5 stars Most mysterious of ancient philosophers.......2001-06-21

Considered by many to be the first important Western teacher of wisdom, exalted by such luminaries as Socrates and Plato, the stories that have come down to us about Pythagoras and his teachings continue to resonate and have value in our modern world. This precious little book (159 pages) is written simply, introducing the life and teachings of one of the most mysterious of ancient philosophers.

The book is organized brilliantly; touching on all aspects of the life of Pythagoras and his teachings, ranging from knowledge and friendship, mathematics, music, care of the self and magic and miracles. Particular attention is devoted to the Pythagorian community and the followers of his teachings during his relatively long stay on the planet, (he nearly reached the age of one hundred) until his enforced death by his enemies through starvation, while taking asylum in the temple of the Muses.

At the end of the book is written The Golden Verses, a poetic guideline or introduction to the Pythagorean way of life. In a word, this is an ancient 'self-help' treatise that should be posted on one's shaving mirror, and attempted to be practiced everyday. If you do anything at all, read these ancient verses, as they are inspiring and valuable to living. As the authors state about them: "That they are hard to date with accuracy attests to the fact that they convey timeless truths."

As a starting point to the study of philosophy or just mere curiousity about the source of the famous Pythagorean Theorem, Divine Harmony is a valuable book to read and own.

This book is recommended highly.

Book Description

When we eat, can we feed the soul as well as the body? Can a diet have an impact on spirituality? Spiritual Nutrition empowers readers to develop personal diets that are appropriate to their lifestyles and spiritual practices. Drawing on 14 years of clinical experience and research, Dr. Gabriel Cousens discusses nutritional issues that can help answer these questions, including raw vs. cooked food; high vs. low protein; the concepts of assimilation and fasting; alkaline--acid balance; attitudes about food; nutrients, energy, and structure building.

In addition, Cousens shares his new dietary system of "spiritual nutrition" that is based on the relationship that the color of the food has to corresponding colors of the human chakra system, hence, the "rainbow diet." For true nourishment, he strongly promotes the connection of diet to meditation, fellowship, wisdom, and love.

5 out of 5 stars Living the Six Foundations... Do You?.......2007-09-04

Having lived and breathed Gabriel's teachings at his community in Arizona since 2001 I can truly say that there is so much depth, wisdom and beauty to be found within these pages that you will keep coming back to it again & again.

This book cannot be taken in one sitting, nor can personal spiritual transformation. The knowledge in this book is a summary of 35 years of the author actually living this way. How many books can you find where the teachings are actually lived by the author.

This book is to be savored, Meditated On, Lived & Experienced one bite at a time.

The shallow reviews on this page from people who have never actually met Gabriel, Lived the Six Foundations or even read the whole book seem really odd to me.

Regarding nutrition this book covers: Living Water, Minerals, Enzymes, B12, Fasting, Low Glycemic, Organic, Veganism, Ayurveda, and yes Undereating.... and if you have ever eaten at the Tree of Life Cafe you will realize the food is amazing, packed with nutrition, satifying and alive... people go home feeling like they have certainly feasted.

On a daily basis at the center/ community we meditate for world peace, share with like minded people, practice yoga, teach food prep classes, eat organic live foods... and teach people to go out and live their own dharma (life purpose)that helps bring peace into their own communities.

The teachings are there for us to take what works for us.... like Gabriels other book Conscious Eating focussed on Individualizing the Diet... This book focusses clearly on Individualizing the Spiritual Life. The six foundations are simple... and contain levels & depths of knowledge and flexibility for each unique beautiful soul walking the planet.

I invite you to take a taste of this book, experience & live some of the wisdom & teachings and share it with family & friends.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money, you dont need this book.......2007-07-28

This book is not really a book on nutrition, but rather a collection of scripture based quotes and out of date references selling the 'virtues' of veganism and undereating. This thick text can be summerized as follows: "Remove anything in your diet that you enjoy or that might put a little bit of excitment on your plate, and with what is left DON'T eat much of that and make sure you go HUNGRY, then when you are really miserable you can kid yourself that some how you are really spiritual and the pain in your stomach is your kundalini awakening"
Deprivation and misery in the name of spiritual virtue is so last millenium, there IS a better way. Bon appetit, salut, MANGIA MANGIA

I'm extremely interested in working with and moving energy, and the spiritual and mental implications of energy (I'm a Reiki Master), so I'm not unamenable to the subjects addressed in this book. (That's why I bought it.) However, your ability to stomach this book will depend on the extent you buy into Cousens himself as a personality. He saturates the entire tome with his own presence, and the central irony is that while he brazenly refers to himself as "a Liberated spiritual teacher" who "no longer identifies himself with the body-mind-I AM complex" and has "realized the innate perfection" (real saints, by the way, are always convinced they aren't, but are acutely aware of what they perceive as their own imperfection), he writes about himself relentlessly, offering long descriptions of his supposedly amazing experiences and awakenings of cosmic consciousness during his practice. Rarely have I read the outpourings of such an egotist, and to compound this he employs the literary stratagem of never referring to himself as "I" (because he's so selfless), but always as "this one" or "Gabriel". This pretentious device makes for trying reading after a while. It's very distracting. Readers should be forwarned that Cousens makes the fatal error of mistaking strange, overwhelming physical sensations and surreal visions for spirituality and spiritual practice. They are not. They're phenomena of the mundane level and not to be given credence as genuine spiritual experience, which is subtle and rarified and borne out only by the emergence of real virtues in the aspirant's personality. Read St. John of the Cross to find out what REAL spiritual elevation entails. As a guide to nutrition, the book is virtually useless. The writing is so dense, disorganized, rambling and loaded with specialized scientific language it's a labor to read, and extracting actually useful information is a chore at best. In a nutshell: Cousens advocates a completely vegan, raw food diet. There you have it. (No need to buy the book.) This, of course, isn't doable for most people. And since we are all born for the specific purpose of achieving spritual realization, this can't be the only dietary regimen that supports this goal. Countless fully enlightened, God-realized beings throughout the ages have achieved their illumination while eating a more varied diet. Skip this one.

1 out of 5 stars A dull and boring intellectual approach to spirituality and live foodism........2006-06-20

This has to be one of the most frustrating and dull spirituality and live food books I have ever read. There are pages and pages of 'the author' (he refers to himself in the third person) procrastinating on religion, history etc. Yup he's right, a live food diet will raise your kundalini. So does walking in the counrty, having a great love life, being positive and doing work you love. Which is basically what he is saying here. There, I've managed to say it in two sentances. If you're into personal growth, and spiritual development, try David Wolfe's books. Even though he plagurised Nature's First Law, the original is out of print, but it's a raw food philosophy masterpiece all the same. It's also the third of the length of Cousen's book. Or read Leonard Orr's Breaking The Death Habit, or the Indian classic 'Autobiography of a Yogi.' These three books will open your mind and soul to new and real possibilitesin an authentic heartfelt way, without the ego of the author getting in the way.

3 out of 5 stars Some good info, but not much of a fan of the author.......2005-09-24

Although I've only just begun to read this book, this seems to be some good information in it. But don't get too caught up in the book. I don't like the way that the author glorifies himself. He's alway's saying, "Oh I'm so great I've trascended that I don't even refer to myself at I, I'm one now!"

All the good readings that I have read by great spiritual masters never glorified themselves. It seems that this guy does too much of that.

I'm sure there is some good information in here, but I'm just not much of a fan of the author.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know.......2006-12-07

I bought this book in March 2000, right after we purchased a refurbished Elmira Sweetheart style wood cookstove. It is the perfect companion to using the woodstove for heating, cooking, or both. There are detailed descriptions of all the components of the stove, plus how to clean it and what type of wood to use for best results. It also has a bit of amusing history, and lots of tasty recipes. This is the only book you need for learning to use your wood cookstove efficiently.

5 out of 5 stars Burn Like A Pro.......2000-09-28

When I first bought a house in the Blue Ridge Mountains I found that (being built in 1810) the most efficient and economical way to heat it was with wood. So although I didn't buy this book for the cooking aspects (which proved nice anyway), it was INDISPENSABLE for a beginning wood-burner. You get the low down on maintenance, safety, and a host of other must-have information. Should be required reading with every wood burning stove/heater purchase. Two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars A complete guide!.......2000-05-10

We are building a house and I am considering using a wood cook stove outside on the patio, to be used during the summer months, when the inside electric stove would heat up the house, so I bought this book as an introduction to using one.

This book covers a lot of ground, including new and used stoves, various types of wood for fuel, coal stoves, how to operate the stove, recipes, and a whole host of other topics. Now I can't wait to buy a stove and get 'cookin'.

5 out of 5 stars Every Wolfhound Owner Should have One.......2006-03-15

This is a truly wonderful exposition of the IW breed. It is lamentable that it is now out of print and therefore so expensive to own. Even so, it is such a thorough compendium of Irish Wolfhound knowledge and lore that it is worth having.

5 out of 5 stars As grand and beautiful as the dog itself.......2004-11-13

I paid an enormous amount of money for this book. Every breeder I spoke with acknowledged it as the premier source of information extant for Irish Wolfhounds. (One breeder said they'd never heard of it, and that raised my eye considerably.)

It was worth every last penny, but for the life of me I don't understand why it's not still in print. There isn't a single book on Irish Wolfhounds that stands up to this, and when you compare this book with others, it's similar to comparing an Irish Wolfhound to a gerbil. No comparison.

The pictures are worth a million words. It's often difficult to get an idea of how immense this beautiful and gentle dog truly is, but there are eye turning pictures in this book that make you wonder if it's a dog or a bear. Aside from its enormity, it's also a stunningly beautiful dog (although many consider it wiry and ugly - their loss), and again, the photographs and drawings capture the true essence of this most magnificent dog perfectly. If all you want is a picture book, this is the book for you. However, I wouldn't advise spending $300 on a picture book if that's all you want. Look on the web, there are great photographs of this leonine canine everywhere.

The author covers so many topics, and she does so with a sure, knowledgeable hand. She begins with what it's like to live with Wolfhounds, and that is an important chapter for anyone considering taking this dog into their home. It's not like buying a German Shepherd, or a Labrador, or even a Mastiff. This dog requires *space*, not to mention room to run. Lots of it.

There is an excellent chapter, that was my personal favorite, on the history of the Irish Wolfhound. You'll find many writings on the internet that say this or that about the Wolfhounds ancestry, but this is the authority.

From there forward the book moves from choosing a Wolfhound (companion or show dog?; what color?; first contact with the puppy) to rearing; adult care; feeding; basic training; breed standards; how the different colors are produced; showing the wolfhound; coursing; breeding; whelping a litter; caring for the litter; health care; and finally discussions on Irish Wolfhounds in the UK, Ireland, North America, and worldwide.

If you have a question about an Irish Wolfhound after reading this book, then rethink your question - you're probably asking the wrong question. It's all here, and it's as magnificent as the dog itself.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2002-01-11

This was a great investment. I took another's advice and spent the extra money to buy this book versus a smaller, cheaper Wolfhound book. I am so glad that I did. It has a great in depth history of the breed including the efforts of those who worked so hard to keep the Wolfhounds from becoming extinct. It covers puppyhood, breeding, health care, training feeding. It has it all. I went ahead and bought it new to avoid the waiting list. Definitely worth the money!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent research on the most noblest of hounds.......1999-07-09

In my opinion, this is the best book ever produced on the Irish Wolfhound. In depth information which is easily understood by the novice as well as totally absorbing for the more experienced owner. Mary McBryde has done the Irish Wolfhound proud. A must for anyone with interest in this very special breed.

5 out of 5 stars Book for all dog fanciers, breeders and non breeders.......1999-02-21

Bought this book yesterday and it's worth every penny that was spend. Since I dont own a Wolfhound and wanted to know more about them before I got one, this is the perfect book. It has everything you need to know. Not just all the boring Kennel, champion part were most other books go into great detail for those who are interested in showing and breeding. Since I'm not, other things are more important like the character, the history, the feeding of puppy's and adults and all the other things that dog owners find important for everyday life. Thank you very much for writing such a great and informitive book with so many great pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book...........2007-08-24

I have recently started knitting and this was my 2nd knitting book purchase. Lion Brand yarn has won me over and I did not even notice this was a book by them... The nice thing about this book is that it provides patterns for the very beginner to the very advanced; I like this because it is a book I will be able to refer back to when I become 'advanced'! The pictures are great and they give you a good idea on how the pattern will turn out. The patterns included in the book do not seem too hard to follow either. I have already finished one out of the book and I am eager to start more.

Another great thing about this book, is how they will provide the same pattern for individuals who knit and crochet. This is great because many knitters like to learn how to crochet, and visa versa, so it is a book that will be on someone's shelf for awhile-- and mine will be one of them!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-01-04

Nice book for hat patterns. Both crochet and knitting. I would have preferred all knitting.

I bought this book but I did not really read carefully, this book has knitting, and more knit than crochet and the crocheted scarve are nothing worth looking at, yarn they use not as nice as the knit. More to beginner crocheters.. They could of been better

    3 out of 5 stars Immediate gratification.......2005-10-03

The five-star patterns in this book are great for beginner to intermediate knitters looking for some fun, quick-to-complete projects. (I don't really crochet, but the crochet projects may inspire me to pick up a hook and give it a try).

I give the book a 3 star rating because, like a previous reviewer, I found a mistake in a different pattern. In the classic cables scarf (page 45) the 8-stitch right cable should read hold cable needle in BACK. The 4-stitch right cable has correct instructions. HINT: Check to see if your pattern book or the brand of yarn you are using has a website. You'll find pattern corrections listed there.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the want-to-be knitter.......2005-09-15

If you are a beginning knitter and want to advance your knowledge, "Just Scarves" is a great book for you. There are eight chapters:
    1. Easy Does it
    2. Simple Scarves with a twist (fringe, pockets, embellishments)
    3. Cables
    4. Granny Squares
    5. Shaped Scarves (narrow-wide-narrow shaping, for example)
    6. Lace basics
    7. Fabulous Scarves (bobbles, crochet applique)

There are hints on finishing, using eyelash novelty yarns. The photos are pretty, the drawn illustrations lavish. If you are an experienced knitter, you may be somewhat beyond what's here, so I recommend this for beginner-intermediate skill knitters.

"Just Hats", the companion volume has simple hats to more complex.

    1. Easiest Hats ever(crochet, knit)
    2. Seamless hats (like watchcap and very pretty but simple berets)
    3. Simple hats with a twist (Jester Hat and a VERY fun raccoon hat from fun fur)
    4. Granny square hats (for the crocheters)
    5. Children's hats
    6. Hats that incorporate color (including a NON-granny square crochet hat in two colors, and a snowflake hat.)
    7. Felted hats
    8. Great Patterns, including a Paul Bunyan crocheted hunters hat with flaps and a two-eared snowboarder's style tassled hat.

Of the two books, I preferred the hat book, BUT if you long to knit those furry long boas or make mini shawls and neckwear, the scarf book is good. Both books recommended for the newer knitter. Lion Brand Yarns sponsored these books, so the yarns are widely available at craft and discount department stores.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST reference on the subject..........2000-03-29

This book is a fabulous reference, especially to those of us who have a requirement to identify disease and recommend solutions to address/avoid further disease of herbaceous ornamentals. Almost too much information - which is never enough! Not as basic as the Rodale or Ortho books on the subject - this book has many levels of detail. Differentiation is the set of look-alike keys. Well worth the price as THE reference on the topic.

    Book Description

For more than a dozen years, readers all over the country have checked in weekly with Marguerite Kelly's "The Family Almanac" syndicated column for help and advice in dealing with issues facing today's families. Now, fans of her column and her immensely popular book, The Mother's Almanac, will be thrilled with the arrival of this new title. Finally, families will have all the information they need in one volume: Sound ideas on everything from bringing home a new baby to choosing a preschool, coping with illness and divorce to nurturing self-confidence.

Kelly's warm, assuring voice and wit combine to speak to every mother and father who are facing the tough new concerns of parents of today -- self-esteem and values, divorce, AIDS, learning disabilities and single parenting -- as well as the age-old questions on sibling rivalry, raising an only child, discipline, and grandparents.

No one knows better than Marguerite Kelly how challenging parenting can be; nor can anyone be as encouraging, supportive, and enthusiastic about the joys and rewards it will bring.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST if you are a parent!.......1998-07-27

When things get CRAZY, I pick up this book. It helps make sense of things and put them back into perspective. No one said child-rearing was easy, nor dealing with adult family matters either! But these are life's events and we must deal with them. Marguerite helps one take a step back and look at the "big" picture. She has a strong value system and delicately but firmly applies that to the present day. She is thoughtful, wise, and incredibly caring. I discovered her through the Washington Post, where she has a weekly column called "Family Almanac". She's terrific and you can check her out on-line through the Washington Post. Once you do, you'll want all of her books!

Ideal for adding structure to early field experience, this practical new book offers a well-organized, flexible program that will help new teachers acquire the critical skills they need to establish effective, productive relationships with the families of their pupils and members of the community in which they teach. Straightforward, clearly written coverage includes a wide array of realistic case studies, field experiences, and issues for discussion that sensitively address the increasing diversity of family structures in American society. Case studies at the end of every chapter involve readers in realistic teacher/school vs. family/community challenges, and introduces them to various family structures, circumstances, and situations. Every chapter contains both school- and community- based activities for pre-service teachers. This compact, yet comprehensive treatment includes reflective ethnographic research strategies, and covers all of the major issues related to family/community involvement without unnecessary detail. For pre-service and in-service teachers of elementary school grade levels.

            5 out of 5 stars Warm tales.......2002-01-02

What a delight this little book is! Within the space of only 151 pages of standard typeface, Alice Taylor has told many a tale, charmed us with her warmhearted stories from her childhood.

4 out of 5 stars Ashes only half the story.......2000-03-28

If Angela's Ashes and it's clones is your only taste of Ireland during the economic hard times, you're only getting half the story. This best seller speaks of the Ireland our grandparent's held dear to their hearts. It's short vignette structure makes it an excellant read for those using public transportation. Warning: people who feel good writing must be driven by inner turmoil will hate this book. To all others Taylor's work is breath of fresh air!

            5 out of 5 stars Aaaaaaaaaaahhh!.......1999-09-23

I laughed, I cried, I remembered my own childhood in County Ireland as I ran barefoot through the daisies. I especially loved the bit about 'Old Dan'who loves to be near children. I knew a guy JUST like that when I was seven. Alice Taylor's book is a TRIUMPH. It is nothing less. We need more books about the poverty and ignorance of Ireland, written by an ordinary housewife like Alice, in her deceptively accessible style. In these weary times, her book is like three hundred milligrammes of morphine to a man with a headache. She deserves the pulitzer! Well done Alice!!

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhh! Life as it should be lived........1999-01-08

If you love the simple life (not to be confused with easy), nature, simple people and their idiosyncracies, then you will love this book. Alice Taylor takes us back to the communal farm life of Ireland. She "shows" us vividly how she grew up in County Cork Ireland in a rural farming community where the community came before the individual; unheard of in our current paradigm. Everything that nature had to offer was used in daily life, including the grease from cooked geese to oil leather boots. Life was about pulling your weight, helping your neighbor, integrity, and respecting God and His creations. This book sooths my soul and slows me down. If you live a busy "city" life, but long for nature and simplicity, I highly recommend this book. It will make you smile and comfort your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN A WARM IRISH BREAKFAST ON A COLD, MISTY MORNING.......1996-12-31

I'd rather read this book than have Irish bread w. freshly whipped butter, w. farm-fresh eggs, tomato, sausage and Irish breakfast tea! And that's a lot! This affectionate novel is a jewel. A very special woman wrote this book and shared with us her very special childhood. If you're Irish, of Irish descent, have been to Ireland, or enjoy a charming, well-written, enchanting true tale, you'll love this book and keep a copy and recommend it to loved ones. Did you enjoy the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE books as a child? Or have you read, THE ROAD FROM COORAIN by Jill Ker Conway? Then you'll truly enjoy this book

                Product Description

School in the Park is an innovative museum-based educational effort to engage students in their community during the school day. Since 1999 several hundred students have been educated each year in museums and the zoo in San Diego. This is more than a field trip, it is changing the way that education is provided. Challenging the Classroom Standard Through Museum-Based Education: School in the Park presents the experience of School in the Park from the perspective of different disciplines—oral language, reading, writing, social studies, math, science, and the arts—to determine how students are learning content within museums and the zoo. It provides a number of examples, case studies, references, scenarios, and recommendations for teaching and learning outside of the traditional classroom. The perspectives of teachers, museum educators, and students are represented. Importantly, this book offers ideas that readers can use in their own communities, ranging from long-term partnering with cultural institutions to one-day trips, to ensure that students have authentic experiences with the curriculum. With the current increased focus on accountability and achievement, less attention and importance is given to community-based learning experiences. This book demonstrates the viability of merging formal and informal learning and using community venues as an extension of the classroom. All those interested in and charged with educating children will find this book useful in exploring powerful learning experiences that occur outside traditional classroom settings.
