    Book Description

Sir John Norton-Griffiths was one of a breed of adventurer, pioneer, entrepreneur and soldier whose like is very seldom seen. Having learnt his trade and made his fortune mining the rich seams of south Africa, he turned his expertise to more deadly use in the Great war. He led the gallant miners who burrowed deep under enemy lines with devastating effect.

He went on to wreak havoc on the Danube. Always a controversial figure, he died (or was he murdered?) in mysterious circumstances. This is the story of a true maverick who was a formidable force and legend wherever he went.

    Book Description

In this book, Minton shares some of his many experiences, from being on a navy ship when it was hit by a Kamikaze plane, to diving with sea snakes in the South Pacific; chasing geckos in the Sind Desert and treating people with tropical diseases in Central America. This is a modest account of the full and exciting life of this gifted man, a physician; father of modern Indiana herpetology; expert in toxinology, sea snakes, and snake bite; and devoted husband and father. The life and career of this unusual man were fascinating. Growing up in New Albany, a small town in his beloved southern Indiana, he decided to become a herpetologist. His father, a U.S. Senator, disapproved of his career choice and gave his son the option of becoming a lawyer or a medical doctor-Minton chose the latter. Throughout all of his travels, Minton collected information about amphibians and reptiles, and published more than 150 herpetological papers and books. Two popular books, Venomous Reptiles and Giant Reptiles, coauthored by his wife and lifelong assistant, Madge Rutherford Minton, have been staples for the younger generation of herpetologists. He also wrote A Contribution to the Herpetology of West Pakistan, which remains the most definitive book on the subject to date.

    5 out of 5 stars Every Herpetologist's Dream.......2006-06-02

The fact that the author of this book, Dr. Sherman Minton, was my father may give me a slightly prejudiced view of this story. That notwithstanding, I can honestly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in herpetology, or just a love of animals and adventure. It is a saga of where something that began as a childhood hobby can lead a truly dedicated person.
We discovered this manuscript after my father died in 1999, and we believe that it was very nearly, if not completely, finished. Our greatest regret is that our Dad did not live to see it published. For those of you who read the book, I would very much enjoy hearing your comments, and can be reached at brmcervantes@yahoo.com.

    Book Description

For parents of three to six year olds, a wise and charming guide to talking about sex, conception, and birth.

Young children ask questions about sex, sexuality, conception, and birth that can be embarrassing or uncomfortable for parents. With her characteristic good sense and cool head, author Deborah Roffman will put even the most awkward parents at ease, giving them the skills to talk confidently with young children about these important but delicate issues.

In this wonderfully reassuring book, readers will learn that the key to talking with children about sex is knowing that their questions fall into three easily recognizable categories. At age three or four, kids are curious about geography ("Where was I before I was here?"), and at four or five, about delivery ("Exactly how did I get out of there?"). Finally, the six year old's classic stumper--"But how'd I get in there in the first place?"--is about cause and effect, not about imminent sexual activity! With the emotional and developmental underpinnings of a child's curiosity understood, parents will find their tongues; with Deborah Roffman's wise, warm and practical advice, they will be well prepared for the inevitable flow of questions in the years to come.

3 out of 5 stars better than a couple of other resources..........2007-08-01

Roffman's book is well-written but lacks direction at points. The information seems out of order in places and is a bit repetitive. It's not easy to locate info if parents are looking for quick tips. Roffman does a nice job including her own teaching, mothering and childhood experiences and is a sold resource. The book loses focus at the end, giving info geared more towards educators than parents.

5 out of 5 stars great reading before your kids start asking -- or after!.......2007-07-22

I bought this book from the author after attending a super educational conference which she led (I am a middle-school teacher who was reviewing the health & sexuality component of our school's curriculum). However, I bought this book with my then-four-year-old in mind, and it's fantastic. Its down-to-earth, concrete language helps demystify the idea of talking about sex with kids -- an effort which she reminds us we are usually trying to learn from scratch, without the help of effective, adult role models to follow.

Roffman gives wonderfully humorous examples of how to follow a child's lead -- and when to listen and find out what the kid is actually asking, rather than what you, with that frog in your throat, mistakenly assume that he may want to know.

Having worked with many teens whose parents have waited until they are so old that talking about sexuality and relationships is viewed as a "hush-hush" conversation, I highly recommend this book to all parents as a way to help open up conversational ground wihtout fear. The more correct information that kids have from parents, from the start -- about their bodies and about healthy human relationships -- the better equipped they will be to interpret all the MISinformation that comes at them later, from the media and from their peers!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book--and not just for parents of young children.......2002-05-23

This is a wonderful book--informative and easy to read, which is pretty impressive for a topic that makes most parents uncomfortable: talking with our children about sex. Roffman understands that sex education does not begin or end with learning about periods and puberty in fifth or sixth grade--she offers insightful guidelines for discussing important issues at different ages. My daughter is out of the target age range for this book (she's eleven) but I found the book very useful anyway, helping me understand the lessons I missed along the way and giving good basic information and ideas for communicating it. Read it!

        Book Description

Covering history and method, this introduction to the breakthrough technique of woven shibori embraces new approaches to the art of weaving and dyeing. With this guide, weavers of all skill levels, using any type of loom, can explore woven shibori. Unlike traditional shibori, which uses stitches placed by needle on commercial cloth in the dyeing process, the "stitches" used in this new process are woven directly into the cloth, thus becoming part of the cloth's construction. After sections on the history of shibori and its many cultural variants, the chapters move on to thorough instructions in a range of weaving applications, from plain twills to laces. Examples, tips, and safety guides for the dyeing process are included, opening up a world of creative possibilities for weavers, textile, and fiber artists.

5 out of 5 stars Good book to get you started.......2007-04-05

This is fairly comprehensive. The author gives you some history of traidtional shibori. She shows you what is being done currently with woven shibori by other artists in addition to her own work. She makes it clear that the technique is evolving. Then she explains how to weave the cloth and how to dye it. She shows many dye techniques. It would be exciting to see an online photo gallery of pieces created from the inspiration and instruction in this book.

Even though my daughter has never been sick I have used the information in this book to help keep her well when all of the children around her did get sick. And it's not just for children I have used this book for my husband when he was ill. This book was recemmended to me by a mom of four and I have recommended it to many of my friends.

            5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!.......2007-07-28

I have referenced this book on several occasions while dealing with my children's illnesses. This book has kept me from making some serious mistakes with my children, and it has also kept me from putting my children on an endless round of antibiotics for minor things. I have used her wisdom to treat my children on various occasions, and would recommend this book as a household reference for anyone desiring the best for your family.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Household Reference.......2006-08-28

The beginning of this book is my favorite part. Here Mrs. Parker lays out her very balanced philosophy of health care. She also explains, in much detail, and with actual forms, how to keep comprehensive health records for each member of your family. The bulk of the book consists of an ailment-by-ailment listing with lifestyle and supplement recommendations for each ailment. As Mrs. Parker's emphasis is herbal, I personally find the supplement recommendations to be so complex and varied as to be difficult for me to keep up with: I could not possibly stock all of these things in my medicine chest. However, I'm sure it would be of great use if my family came down with anything more serious than a cold (at which point it would be worth tracking down the supplements). All in all, I find this to be handy as a reference, especially in the area of keeping health records, but I would appreciate something simpler as the core of my home health library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for novice prescribers with children.......2002-01-03

As a mommy of two very young children (3 and 1) and aspiring to be the mommy of more to come I find this to be a wonderful resource for diagnosing and treating all common ailments for children as well as adults. Very easy to read and understand, organized in a user-friendly manner. Very concise index which helps you to quickly find the ailment or herb you are looking for. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with small children who prefers homeopathic medicine to conventional medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Theology and Balance.......2001-05-31

Shonda Parker's book is the first I've read on this topic with a combination of excellent theology and a balanced view regarding herbs/nutrition. It is thoroughly Christian and reminds Mommies to trust in God's sovereignty while equipping them to make educated choices for excellent care of their little blessings.

Brother of Medgar Evers, who was murdered in 1963 in Jackson, Miss., for his civil rights activities, Charles Evers was also an activist in his own right. He succeeded his brother as head of the Mississippi NAACP, and became the first black mayor in Mississippi since Reconstruction. But he was also a complicated, quixotic figure, a man historian David Levering Lewis calls a "holy sinner of the civil rights era." Charles Evers helped finance Medgar Evers's work with profits made running numbers in Chicago and at various times in his life, as he chronicles in this book, made money bootlegging liquor and arranging call girls. Nonetheless, it is moving when Evers calls for an end to hate.

              Book Description

"Charles Evers is a personal hero of mine."—Jesse Jackson

"Many people in Decatur were surprised to see sweet little Medgar Evers grow up to be such a warrior for civil rights. I wasn't surprised one damn bit. I saw the warrior in Medgar when he was a tiny boy. I helped create that warrior."—Charles Evers

A fierce warrior in his own right, the brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers fought on the front lines of the greatest struggle for America's heart and soul since the Civil War. Now, in a work of uncompromising honesty and power, Charles Evers re-creates the raw emotions of those times, conveying all of the rage and hope of a people rising against injustice and demanding equality. Have No Fear is charged with the passion, conviction, and vigorous spirit of a battle-scarred soldier who has met his foe and emerged victorious.

Charles Evers grew up in Mississippi during the 1920s and '30s. Proud and headstrong, quick to action, he lived by his father's creed: Have no fear. Learning early about the harsh realities of poverty and unrelenting racism, and determined to erase the color line, he forged a special pact with his younger brother: "Medgar and I made a sacred oath as young boys: Whatever happened to one of us, the other would carry on." It was a pact that Charles would honor for the rest of his life.

Driven from Mississippi, he made an illicit fortune in Chicago, and sent the money home to help his brother in the fight for civil rights. Shattered by Medgar's assassination in 1963, Charles seized his brother's mantle as head of the Mississippi NAACP. His volatile personality alienated many but inspired more—young and old, rich and poor, black and white. Always a shrewd businessman, he became an even shrewder politician, leading the biracial coalition that unseated an all-white Mississippi delegation at the notorious 1968 Democratic convention. Elected the first black mayor in Mississippi since Reconstruction, he made a courageous run for governor on the campaign promise "Evers for Everybody."

A blunt, often blistering account of one man's lifelong battle for respect—for both himself and all Americans—Have No Fear is packed with insight and little-known details about Charles Evers's friends and allies—Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Nelson Rockefeller, Thurgood Marshall, and Fannie Lou Hamer, among others.

An unflinching witness to history, Charles Evers has been a driving, motivating force, a dedicated leader whose story is a landmark addition to the history of the civil rights years and their turbulent aftermath.

"Charles Evers has given us one of the most extraordinary memoirs about race in America that I know. This holy sinner of the civil rights era, who kept company with mobsters, bootleggers, call girls, Kings, Kennedys, and Rockefellers has produced, with Andrew Szanton, a salient one-man's history of Mississippi and the United States before and after Brown v. Board of Education. The fascinating interplay of racial nihilism and political sagacity is reminiscent of the early Malcolm X and the mature Frederick Douglass."—David Levering Lewis Pulitzer Prize-winning author W. E. B. DuBois: Biography of a Race, 1868-1919

"Charles Evers is a gutsy American patriot and treasure. This book is an important, well-written slice of American history."—Dan Rather

"Charles [Evers] shared Medgar's commitment and activism . . . Have No Fear tells the story of his life, which is also inevitably a portrait of his martyred brother, of the Mississippi civil rights movement, and of the nation itself."—Booklist (starred review)

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Man!!!.......2005-09-16

While his younger Brother Medgar gets more attention. This man is a Mississippi legend as well. He is not afraid to admit his vices, his faults, and his triumphs. He is a college grad, fighter, ladies man, pimp, Civil rights Leader, Politician, a man who although he follows non-violence, is not afraid to confront White Racists or African-Americans he disagrees with. It is a interesting life story.

5 out of 5 stars By Far, The Bravest Man I Have Ever Met.......2004-07-12

I first met Charles Evers in June of 1999, at my first Medger Evers/B.B. Homecoming Event. Charles Evers is a no frills, hardworking individual, who knows how to get things done! I finally picked up this book after my third homecoming. This year's homecoming took place on the 41st Anniversary of Medger's death. I, hereby salute Mr. Evers for everything he's ever done, for every risk he ever took, for all the successes he has made, and for writing this book. If you want to better understand what it was like for the negro people of Mississippi, in the 60's, 70's, and 80's READ THIS BOOK! If you want to know how a man can be riddled with hate and then go on to do the right things for his people, in a non-violent, yet persistant way, READ THIS BOOK! And then plan a trip to Jackson next June and pay homage to the Ever's brothers, attend the Medger's Memorial Service and meet many of the people who helped create the Mississippi we know today; then and have a great time mingling with the great people of Mississippi at the two, all-day music events, which are headlined by none other than Mr. B.B. King.

              5 out of 5 stars what a book!.......2000-06-04

while I didn't agree with everything he said in the book I thought he was very honest in writing about his life and about his brother. it's defintley worth reading.

              5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......1998-07-19

Written by Medgar Evers' lesser known brother, this is a powerful account of the civil rights movement in the south by someone who lived it. Order it. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful men are rarely so honest -- read it........1998-02-17

Gives a real sense of what it's like to grow up hated, and to learn to hate, and then to painstakingly give up hate. A loving ode to Medgar Evers, and an unflinching look at Charles Evers. Humor, too.
