Book Description
A practical and reliable diagnostic tool that has emerged over the past twenty-five years, kinesiology is the study of the mechanics of bodily motion, especially muscle movements and their relationship to our body systems. Viewing the body as a balanced triad of structure, chemistry, and mentality, applied kinesiology gauges muscle response to pinpoint underlying physical problems. Within 30 minutes, a competent kinesiologist can evaluate bodily functions and provide a readout on the workings of the glands, organs, lymphatic system, circulatory and nervous systems, circulation, and muscle-bone structure.
Applied Kinesiology demonstrates how this technique can be of practical use for everyone.

A very well written book by Tom & Carole and an underrated topic of health .......2006-01-12
The previous review said more than I can rightfully
say here but I will ad that Tom's show, Midas Report-
True Health is very good as well. Check it out at:

Excellent practical work.......2005-12-26
I used this book to get a better background in applied kinesiology principles to help me with my research into the body mechanics and kinesiology of the martial arts. I am a karate, kung fu, and kali/escrima teacher who has developed some ideas especially about punching and kicking techniques, so I thought I'd make a few comments on that, as this book was very helpful in discussing current theory and practice and helping me to sharpen my own ideas on the subject, especially in regard to the analysis of rapid-fire punching techniques.
There are several mechanisms that need to be discussed. The first thing is that rapid-fire punching requires instantaneously unloading the intrafusal muscle spindles by the use of contralateral inhibition of flexor-extensor pairs. This is a well-understood spinal cord reflex, and just means that muscle viscosity and normal muscle-tension dynamics are inhibited and optimized. In terms of the neural pathways, this is mediated by two nerve tracts, the neospinalthalamic and the paleospinalthalamic tracts, or the alpha and gamma motor efferent systems, respectively. But basically, in muscle kinesiology circles, this is known as a "plyometric jerk," and is one way that basketball players use to jump higher.
The second thing is that after the first punch, there are released massive shaking forces which propagate through the various musculo-skeletal systems in a quasi-resonant fashion which can be used to facilitate the acceleration and launch of the next punch in the sequence. These, as you might expect, are very difficult dynamics to control, being nonlinear in their behavior, but it is possible to re-sequence the muscles involved in such a punching series to take advantage of them. I have had some success in setting up "standing waves" to take advantage of this phenomenon. Standing wave may not be quite right, from a neuromuscular control standpoint, as it is perhaps more like stochastic resonance, since it can be shown that the muscle fibers use a process known as recruitment which is quite statistical mechanical in nature.
Third, the overall muscle mechanics of such a sequence must use a massive, avalanche-like, pulse-oriented "starting focus" to launch the technique, after which it essentially goes "ballistic" for most of the trajectory of the punch, until final termination when normal "ending focus" is applied. From a practical standpoint, this means the punches are bouncing off the endpoints of the punch, which are strongly focused, but with nothing much in the way of tension in-between. This method also eliminates the wasteful, continuous power-utilization curve that most even very experienced black belts use when they punch. This is okay for a one or two punch combo, but not for much beyond that, because this method of coordinating the muscles will impede the necessary fast switching constants that the nervous pathways require to make this work. The neural pathways involved in this are known as the alpha and gamma-motor efferent systems, and their workings are well understood by neurobiologists.
good overview of what to expect from applied kinesiology.......2003-11-20
This book is designed to give readers an introduction to muscle testing used in health assessment and treatment. It is written for the patient rather than as a guide for practitioners, and thus focuses mainly on what treatments are like, what they can accomplish, and what can be expected from these approaches. This book is useful for its intended purpose, but doesn't provide a clear understanding of the science behind kinesiology or ways of developing skills as a practitioner to make therapeutic use of this.
Diagnosis of the human body........2000-05-22
I found yhis book very informative, it gives interesting accounts on every part of the body by recognising responses in the muscles. It gives plain explanations and easy guidedlines to follow, this would assist a student to be able to recognise step by step and help them to recieve messages about healthy or unhealthy parts of the body.' It would also help them to form an opinion as how to help the patient and follow thru with medication in erbel therepies and also make the patient aware of the bodies functions. This book has been thouroughly written with thought, and easy to read and understand without getting very technical.

Southeast Asian Specialties starts with a map, a proverb ("other fields, other insects; other seas, other fish"), and a photo of whole, bronzed, barbecued chickens suspended in a shop window. The image is so vivid you can taste the salty crackle of their crisp, lacquered skin. From here, this encyclopedic book, crammed with information, unforgettable photos, and more than 200 recipes, takes you on a vivid journey through Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The chapter on each of these places opens with a brief overview of the local culture and history. This is followed by a procession of spreads, each devoted to a single subject. Cumulatively, this provides a comprehensive experience of the area's rich culinary life.
Since the Chinese are a major influence throughout Southeast Asia, you learn about the health-promoting principles of balance and about ingredients with medicinal benefits that are commonly used in home cooking. The "Dim Sum" section, like many others in the book, shows a dozen or more dishes, with captions providing detailed information. Often names are given in both Mandarin and Cantonese, and the Latin name is provided for anything that grows, from water spinach to various mushrooms. To deepen your understanding of local ingredients, you see how fresh beans become bean sprouts, how tofu and tempeh, indigenous to Indonesia, are made, and how shiitake mushrooms are grown. Equipment is described, with such details as how to season a new earthenware cooking pot.
Daring cooks can enjoy recipes for spicy Malaysian Fish Head Curry and succulent, silken Hainanese Poached Chicken. Those with access to an Asian market can try the recipe for Kuak Durian, a sauce made with the infamous fruit Southeast Asians adore, despite its revolting fragrance. On a simpler note you can make a Eurasian omelet, filled with fresh red chile peppers and onions. Whether or not you use its recipes, if you enjoy Asian food, this book is valuable and enlightening. --Dana Jacobi

THE cookbook for SE Asian cooking.......2007-09-22
It just received a new reprint this year (07). Technically, I wouldn't call it a true cookbook. You aren't going to find glossy Jamie Oliver-ish recipes in them. But if you ever wonder what the heck is Singaporean-Malaysian-Indonesian cooking all about - this is a great AUTHENTIC guide and reference. No catering to western palettes; no pandering to external tastes preferences. Discover indigenous tastes; get to know unique ingredients; understand the culinary delights of this region.
ASIAN SPECIALTIES.......2007-01-12
I LOVE THE CULINARIA BOOKS. THIS ONE DID NOT DISAPPOINT ME! THE ONLY THING THAT I COULD WISH MORE OF FROM THIS BOOK IS THAT IT BE BIGGER. IT'S QUITE SMALL COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES, OTHER THAN HUNGARY,BUT JUST AS GOOD ALL THE SAME. VERY BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE FOOD, PEOPLE AND THE COUNTRIES MENTIONED. NOT ONLY IS IT A COOKBOOK, IT'S ALSO A SMALL ENCYCLOPEDIA ABOUT THE FOOD DISCUSSED FROM SOUTH EAST ASIA. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE SERIOUS ABOUT ASIAN FOOD AND WITH DEEP POCKETS. IT'S HARD TO FIND THIS BOOK FOR UNDER $90 ANYWHERE. TRY EBAY IF YOU CAN'T FIND IT HERE!
One of my favourite cookbooks!.......2000-07-23
When I got this for Christmas, 1999, I thought it was interesting...but more of a coffe table book than an actual working cookbook. And to some degree I was right: the print is rather small, making it hard to use in the kitchen, the recipes are the bare minimum and assume you absolutely know what you are doing, and the book is more photos of scenery than photos of dishes. But some of the recipes intrigued me, so I gave it a shot...and wow! I have not made a thing in here I didn't like. The Indonesian stuffed squid in spicy sauce ("cumi-cumi isi") is fabulous, and the Malaysian mutton in soy sauce with onions and tomatoes ("kambing kecup") is now a standard of mine -- I make it whenever I have some meat (I use any kind, including fish) and I can't be bothered to be ingenious! Another thing that makes me very fond of this book is the photos of ingredients, like galangal and kaffir limes leaves and candlenuts, with the names of things in several Asian languages, which I have found indispensible.
A Journey for the tastebuds!.......2000-03-28
After having spent 6 months in Hong Kong and enjoying the regional cuisine of Southeast Asia, I was hungering for an authentic book on the subject. I have found it through Culinaria. I have since purchased the other editions in the series. The photography is stunning and the recipes are quite authentic and varied. I have never disappointed a guest using these recipes. A must read!
south-east asian eating delights.......2000-03-28
This book is one of the best south-east asian cookbooks I've ever seen. There are plenty of pictures to show you what each dish should look like and there is an index of all the different ingredients you will have to find. The directions are easy to follow and the recipes that I've tried are wonderful. Just like being back in Malaysia. Even my mother has bought the book and she's Malaysian and a great cook! This book is also just a great book to learn about the different culture in south-east asia, but turning the pages will make your mouth water. Great recipes like penang laksa, assam chicken and rojak will make any meal authentic and delicious.

Having lived with pets all my life, I was a bit astonished that anyone might need a book to help come up with a name for a pet (much less, write such a book!). And yet, here's an entertaining and informative book with lots of historical tidbits, wonderful stories about how people came up the with their own pets' names, a good bit of common-sense pet care information, dos and don'ts, and great pictures of people and their diverse animal friends. All in all, a lot of fun for anyone who enjoys pets of any kind.

Very Basic, Good Primer.......2006-08-02
This is not a book that will teach somebody all the aspects of DCC. Instead, it is a simple primer that gives the basics. It does so in a clear and logical manner that is easy to understand. A person could conceivably wire up a railroad layout after reading this book (probably with lots of luck and attention to the manufacturers documentation) but that would not be wise. A person should do some more in depth planning. This book will not help with that.
The strength of this text is to give an introduction to the subject to somebody who knows nothing about it. The basic understanding gleaned from that should help to determine if further effort is warranted. In my case it is. I will probably keep this book handy for a while until I become more familiar with the tracks and the products but I will soon graduate to a more substantial treatment. Still, this exactly fit the bill for what I needed as a beginner who knows nothing.
Precious guide for dcc beginners.......2006-03-24
A good book, very helpful for begin in DCC sistem control for model railroaders.
Lack of information.......2006-02-25
I was very disappointed in this book. It was sorely lacking in content, mostly it was like reading a big ad for a single model of DCC equipment. I was looking for something which would give more than a general overview of the DCC system. Coverage on the accessory DCC capable options would have been nice. After getting this book I had to still go to the internet and research; this book should have been my reference. I would suggest that you wait until version 2 or maybe 3 of this book before buying it, maybe then they might even add a table for the CV values and what they mean for a decoder.
dont buy it.......2005-12-14
there is no information giving. it took me 2 hours to finish whole book, which is less than 50 pgs.

Complicated subject made easier.......2003-10-14
This book does what I hoped it would...explain what I thought was a complicated subject in easy to understand text. The photos and diagrams help a great deal, too. I always enjoy this author's monthly column in Model Railroader magazine because he speaks in a clear, simple manner. DCC doesn't scare me nearly as much now. This book is well worth the money as far as I'm concerned.

Not as good as I expected.......2002-07-03
It has some pretty good pictures but I was expecting more. Also, I think it has a somewhat confusing layout and I find myself have to flip from front to back to find answers to 1 plant. It's an interesting read but I haven't really used it to help identify plant diseases which is what I bought it for.
I liked it!!!.......2001-07-10
I checked out this book from the local library along with 30 others to browse through for a problem I was having in my garden. This was the ONLY book that helped me solve the problem. There are many, many vivid and realistic pictures. The text was simply written and the book was put together quite well.

Really expected much more from this book. Poor picture quality, It's really too much title for this book.
There's only a couple picture of pests controlling insects, so I still don't know wich are they, only their names.
There's a wide list of pets and deseases, but there isn't much information in how they can be controlled.
I my case the wrong choice!

A practical guide that offers parents valuable advice on issues related to kids and money — no matter what their age or stage in life.
Customer Reviews:
Great book with excellent ideas!!!.......2007-08-23
This book is easy to understand and actually kind of scary how it relates to your own life. It's a book that all parents should read to help their children with life in general. You don't have to be wealthy to read this book....it's for all incomes. You don't have to be wealthy to have a spoiled child that expects too much either. Being a single parent, I'm grateful there are books to give advice on ways to help your child grow up to be responsible. It's common sense really....but to have it in black and white and know your not the only one with issues is comforting. Thanks so much!
How Much Help Did Mr. Buffone Really Get?.......2004-12-23
Mr. Buffone criticizes parents who financially help their children but I wonder, did Mr. Buffone's parents pay for his high priced college degree? Did they lend him money for his down payment on his first home purchase? Always look deeper than what you see on the surface.
Choking on the Silver Spoon.......2004-06-04
I highly recommend this book for parents who love there kids enough to work at raising them to be productive and successful individuals in a "give me" society. This book is an excellent resource for families of silver spooners as well as anyone raising children in a society that encourages getting something for nothing. I have a group of friends who are reading this book in a book club and discussing it weekly.
with a spoonful of humor too!.......2004-05-05
How do rich kids get to be such brats? Have you ever wanted to explain to your kids (& yourself!) what money is & is not, & what it can & cannot do? Then CHOKING ON THE SILVER SPOON is a good place to start.
Dr. Gary Buffone, advisor to the affluent, has written a readable & engaging guide which covers:
When Wealth Cripples: The Monetarily Mangled; Why Parents Worry; Recognizing the Silver Spoon Syndrome; Is Your Child a Silver-Spooner?; The Rising Tide of Wealth in America, & much more.
He explains why Money Can't Buy Them Love & how to go about Curing the Plague of Prosperity. & then he sets forth The Five Immutable Laws of Financial Parenting:
-- of Necessity
-- of Loving Limits
-- of Reciprocity
-- of Fiscal Responsibility
-- of Example.
Rebeccasreads highly recommends CHOKING ON THE SILVER SPOON for all parents (rich & not-so-rich) who want to raise their children with a better grasp of what money means in the scheme of things, & how having it affects your life.
A primer for passing down financial survival skills.......2004-04-05
Choking On The Silver Spoon: Keeping Your Kids Healthy, Wealthy And Wise In A Land Of Plenty by Gary Buffone (a practicing licensed psychologist and Director, The Family Business Century, Byron Harless Consulting, Jacksonville, Florida) is a very practical and accessibly written parenting guide meant for parents everywhere, whether raising toddlers, dealing with difficult teenagers, or keeping in touch with their adult children. Choking On The Silver Spoon deals with the very serious problem of handling children and money matters in a fair and balanced manner that will not "spoil" children, but rather teach them the true value of hard-earned wages, give them initiative to achieve, and help them better succeed financially when on their own. Of special note are the "five laws": The Law Of Necessity; The Law Of Loving Limits; The Law Of Reciprocity; The Law Of Fiscal Responsibility; and The Law of Example. This is superbly presented and highly recommended primer for passing down financial survival skills and endearing a healthy respect for work and the fruits of honest labor.

Book Description
The concept is as unique as the lifestyle it describes: one year in the life of a famous landscape painter. The reader is immediately drawn into the drama of this artist's life, and is seduced by the luxury of the reproductions of his paintings completed on location in Mallorca, Venice, Paris, Georgia, and New York City. The essence of each location is brought to life by inclusion of pertinent historical detail and references to other artists and writers (Graves, Byron, Sand, Chopin) who have shared Zupan's enthusiasm for these magical locations.
The book was printed and bound by Arti Grafiche Giorgi & Gambi in Florence Italy. In Paris on February 25, 2000 it received the prestigious Trofeo Ideal for best production on reflective paper in Europe in 1999. The reproductions are of outstanding quality, and the gold embossed cloth bound cover matches the elegance of the French fold laminated removable jacket.

Fanning the Flames of Hatred and Violence.......2006-02-18
As difficult as it is to give a "star rating" to a book that advocates the genocide of an entire nation, this volume is a valuable scholarly resource. And, indeed, the total destruction of the Irish "race" is Edmund Spenser's aim and rallying cry in writing this volume, addressed to the first Queen Elizabeth. The text takes the form of a Platonic/dramatic dialogue between Irenaeus, lately returned from Ireland (as was Spenser), and his compatriot, the reasonable Eudoxus.
A capsule-summary of the book's tone is possible by a brief description of the half-dozen pages that Spenser spends describing a single article of traditional Irish clothing: the mantle, a long, warm cloak worn by common countryfolk. Even the clothing of the Irish, Spenser/Irenaeus argues, is an incitement towards crime and vice: the mantle can be used to hide anything from weapons to stolen goods to illegitimate pregnancies, and serves as both shelter and bed for outlaws, as well as serving as an effective shield in swordplay. This simple garment, he concludes, must be outlawed. Elsewhere, he also attempts to dissuade British functionaries similarly stationed in Ireland from taking Irish wives or wetnurses, because the women will infect your home and family, resulting in somehow "going native."
So be warned, this is a hateful volume, advocating step-by-step for the Irish people to be killed off so that England can flourish without a sore on her side, and warning, in fact, that the "great scourge" of Ireland presents an eminent danger to the Queen if she does not immediately invade and crush that nation. He argues that the Irish people are so barbarous that English laws will not rule them (and Irish "law" is simply "wrong," encouraging immorality), that the Irish people are uncivilizable, and thus barely human. This book, in many places, does become difficult to read, but read through 20th century eyes, the faulty logic of its arguments is ridiculous enough to prompt giggles--if they were not so deadly serious, and had not been taken seriously by the author's contemporaries.
I would definitely recommend this (quite readable for its age) book to anyone interested in Irish or English history, as well as--perhaps more urgently--to scholars of any of the major 20th century genocides.

Book Description
Fusing historiography with literary criticism, Between Nations produces an array of unexpected readings of early modern texts. Starting from the premise that England has never been able to emerge or define itself in isolation from its neighbors on the British Isles, this book places Renaissance England and its literature at a meeting of English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh histories.
It ranges from the late sixteenth through the late seventeenth centuries and deals with the “reigns” of three monarchs and one regicide—those of Elizabeth I, James I, Charles II, and Oliver Cromwell. However, it shifts the domain they ruled from the customary center into interactions between England and the other British polities. The author argues that England was able to develop into what we call a “nation” only in and by means of its relations with the other proto-“nations” that often it was also suppressing.
Among the authors who served one or more of the four English rulers are Shakespeare, Spenser, and Marvell, who are studied here in the way they responded to the complexities of British history that encompassed their “nation.” They not only participated in nation building/destroying, but their works are shown often to be meditations on that process and their own roles in the process.
In Henry V, for example, Shakespeare both produces a vision of an ideal Britain and inscribes into his play the voices of various British peoples that are meant to be subsumed. Spenser’s A View of the Present State of Ireland, which is often taken as an anti-Gaelic screed, is more plausibly seen as a text compounded of heterogeneous cultural influences, many of them originating from within Ireland. The complexity of the text reflects Spenser’s own situation as a colonial official exiled from one British nation, England, to another, Ireland. In “An Horation Ode upon Cromwell’s Return from Ireland,” Marvell explicitly considers the consequences of a campaign that historians have called the “War of the Three Kingdoms.” In that, and in a later poem, “The Loyal Scot,” Marvell emerges as a shrewd commentator on the British politics of his day. Throughout, the book demonstrates that historical readings of this period’s English literary works can be as multivalent and multicentric as the British history that produced them.

Book Description
While recent studies of Edmund Spenser and Jonathan Swift have firmly relocated both writers in their Irish as well as their English context, English writing in Ireland between these monolithic figures has been largely neglected. This study is the first to explore in detail the literary territory between Spenser and Swift. Examining a range of texts, from fragments to sophisticated publications such as economic improvement manuals, histories, plays, romances and poems, Deana Rankin demonstrates how writers in Ireland articulated the transition from soldier to settler across this century of war and political turmoil. She illuminates both centre and periphery by revealing for the first time the richness of English writing in Ireland during the period and its sustained engagement with canonical English literature, including Shakespeare, Sidney and Milton. Historians and literary scholars will find much to discover in this significant new contribution to early modern British studies.

Book Description
Spenser's Irish Experience is the first sustained critical work to argue that Edmund Spenser's perception and fragmented representation of Ireland shadows the whole narrative of his major work, The Faerie Queene, traditionally regarded as one of the finest achievements of the English Renaissance. The poem has often been read in specifically English contexts but, as Hadfield argues, demands to be read in terms of England's expanding colonial hegemony within the British Isles and the ensuing fear that such national ambition would actually lead to the destruction of England's post-Reformation legacy. Spenser should be seen less as an English writer and more as a new English writer in Ireland, his prose and poetry expressing the hopes and fears of his class. Where A View of the Present State of Ireland attempts to provide a violent political solution to England's Irish problem, The Faerie Queene exposes the apocalyptic fear that there may be no solution at all. The book contains an analysis of Spenser's life on the Munster plantation, readings of the political rhetoric and antiquarian discourse of A View of the Present State of Ireland, and three chapters which argue the case that the apparently Anglocentric allegory of The Faerie Queene reveals a land gradually--but clearly--transformed into its Irish other. Spenser emerges from this study as a writer whose experience in Ireland rendered him implacably opposed to the vacillations of his English monarch.

Book Description
The interplay between colonialism and gender is the focus of this book, which concentrates on Edmund Spenser's "Faerie Queene" in the context of English history. Spenser's attitudes toward the Irish are drawn out of the text of his poetry, especially his preoccupations with sexual promiscuity, Catholicism, and miscegenation. The underlying textual dynamics are analyzed in terms of Spenser's relationship with Queen Elizabeth and his residence in Ireland.

Book Description
Christopher Highley's book explores the most serious crisis the Elizabethan regime faced: its attempts to subdue and colonize the native Irish. Through a range of literary representations from Shakespeare and Spenser, and contemporaries such as John Hooker, John Derricke, George Peele and Thomas Churchyard he shows how these writers produced a complex discourse about Ireland that cannot be reduced to a simple ethnic opposition. Highley argues that the confrontation between an English imperial presence and a Gaelic "other" was a profound factor in the definition of an English poetic self.
