The New American Backyard : Easy, Organic Techniques and Solutions for a Landscape You'll Love
Kris Medic Manufacturer: Rodale Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0875968333 |
Amazon.com
The Rodale Organic Gardening Book series is a consistently reliable basic reference, and the colorful New American Backyard is no exception. Kris Medic is an arborist who, according to her jacket biography, is almost absurdly qualified to write about garden design. In this comfortable, useful volume she provides a guide to sprucing up the backyard for those of us who weren't born knowing what an NPK ratio is.Suburban America's obsession with the perfect swath of green hasn't been an altogether healthy one, but thankfully the excessive use of weed-killers, overmowing, and wasteful watering habits that characterized the last half-century of lawn and garden care are being reevaluated in books like Medic's. Medic emphasizes that adoption of responsible organic methods can actually be more effective than chemical intervention in obtaining that lush lawn of our dreams. It's just plain sensible, for example, to cut the grass at a relatively high level and to leave the clippings on the ground: the long grass and clippings create shade, which limits opportunities for weed growth and keeps the roots and soil cool and moist longer, requiring less frequent watering.
It's also easier--and that's the message at the heart of this book. The most thumbed-through and soil-stained pages of The New American Backyard are sure to be those in the second half, "Timesaving Lawn and Garden Techniques." How to sharpen lawnmower blades yourself, how to prune a tree or thin out a bush with the speed and confidence of a pro, how to choose a grass-seed mixture that's right for your yard (and decipher those cryptic seed-bag labels), how to use water efficiently--Medic's valuable tips will help you to cut down the time spent weeding or waving the hose over the lawn on Sunday mornings when you'd rather be relaxing with a cup of coffee and the paper.
The first part of the book contains the ubiquitous checklists, using which the prospective gardener is supposed shape a vision of the ideal (but doable) backyard environment. The reader should not be discouraged by the presence of these vague lists--in books of this sort they're never particularly helpful, and aren't in this one--because Medic, perhaps anticipating our impatience with authors who prod us into penciling into their books what we already know, quickly abandons that annoying tack in favor of the juicy stuff: well-illustrated, real-life landscaping makeovers and detailed descriptions of how to deal with common yard problems. We learn how and what to plant in those low marshy areas and in small or odd-shaped lots, and how to reduce street noise, wind, and glare. A directory of Medic's "top plant picks" features thorough evaluations of specific varieties of trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines, perennials, and annuals. While the list is certainly not exhaustive, and of course not every plant is suited to every region of the country, Medic's riffs on, for example, the amur maple or English ivy will give novices an idea of the factors to consider in choosing what to plant: the variety's mature size, hardiness and heat zones, preferred sites (sun or shade, swampy soil or dry, and so on), pruning requirements, and pest and disease issues.
Readers whose backyards have ever been besieged by Japanese beetles or crabgrass may have a hard time accepting Medic's recommendations on the cure front (shake the bugs off?), but on the prevention side, this book makes it easy to avoid or at least ameliorate those problems in the planning and planting stages. Xeriscaping, composting, and preventive pest control have never seemed more practical than in Medic's water-wise and pesticide-poor chapters. --Liana Fredley

I Love this book!.......2004-07-08
Another point about this book. I love the wonderful, practical examples that Diana gives you throughout the book. You get to see first hand of how others applied these timeless principles and how you can do the same. You will now have the tools to help your teenager go from "teenager" into a "mature young adult"
I think this book should be a mandatory reading for every parent on his or her child's 13th birthday. It's the best manual on how to parent a teenager that I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

Developing Creative Contributors.......2001-03-25
This book receives my hardiest endorsement as a practical guide for moving beyond limited thinking about teenagers and on to developing the consciousness that will allow teens to become creative contributors of a caring society.
Diana Haskins has written a useful guide for understanding and applying the concepts of how to coach anyone to the unique challenges faced by growing young adults. She begins this work by acknowledging the importance of creating a strong foundation for the relationship by: deepening the connection between adult and teen; strengthening the relationship through heartfelt, effective communications; and fostering a progressive learning dynamic between both parties by laying the groundwork for mutual respect.
From this perspective of honoring and respecting the wisdom inherent in each teen, Diana presents the keys to effective life coaching and addresses some of the most essential concerns teens and parents face today. She reinforces her message by using the language of coaching as a means to respect and nurture, rather than diminish or abandon, the many talents, gifts and insights every teen possesses, giving them the confidence and courage necessary to developing their own unique, and therefore worthwhile, manifestations as fully expressing human beings.
By sharing the principles of coaching in this book about coaching teens, Ms. Haskins has given everyone interested in understanding the heart of coaching, an easy to read, practical guide for learning and applying coaching skills to every relationship. I look forward to additional work by this author, in part because of her clear, well-conceived style of writing that turns sometimes-clinical theories of parenting into a very straightforward sequence of steps that can be practiced by anyone of any age to improve the quality of their relationships. It is this transference-capacity that makes Parent As Coach such a useful guide for all readers.
Parent As Coach is a book I am happy to recommend to my own clients, professional associates and family. I recommend it to you as well.

The Memoirs of Giorgio de Chirico

Comical, obsessive, paranoid, ironic, and brilliant........2002-04-05
But his novel "Hebdomeros" was also a beautiful piece of writing. It's interesting that three major painters associated with surrealism, De Chirico, Dali and Magritte, were also great writers. (De Chirico would hate to be associated with surrealism, but like it or not - he's their Daddy.)
I'm disappointed in part II of the memoirs. I'm also disappointed in what de Chirico does not tell us in part I. He barely touches on his relationship with Apollinaire, wherein the poet would give titles to some of de Chirico's paintings. He doesn't mention his thoughts on learning of Apollinaire's death. He doesn't tell us which paintings he titled, and which were given names by Apollinaire.
On one page, Paul Eluard had good enough taste to purchase his paintings, and thus was not beyond redemption. Yet on the very next page, Eluard was an onanist and a mystical cretin. What happened in a few paragraphs to change his opinion of the man? De Chirico doesn't tell us, except to blame the corruption of Eluard on Andre Breton.
Many details important to students of the era were not even mentioned. Isabella Far is written about at length. Yet de Chirico does not even mention his wedding to her. They are companions for decades and suddenly, he refers to her as his wife. Duh? When did you get married? Where were you? What was the wedding like? Somebody correct me if I overlooked something.
He outlived almost all of his enemies, (and according to de Chirico, his enemies were more numerous than the stars in the sky). He outlived almost all of the surrealists. What did he think when learning of the deaths of Eluard or Breton? What was his opinion of Magritte, to whom he had once written a friendly thank you note? What was it Magritte had written to him?
Unfortunately, details like this are not to be found. Instead, we get an enemies list of Italian critics and modernist painters, whose names most readers in the English-speaking world will not recognize.
Even so, the character revealed in these memoirs is unique. He's obsessive, paranoid, romantic, imperious to the modern world, and at times comical. But he is always guided by a stubborn integrity and a search for what he called "mystery and poetry".
Yet, he is involved in such comical episodes. He's been accused of forging his early paintings and selling them. He's accused of denouncing some of his genuine early paintings as forgeries because he was jealous of the high prices they were drawing. His later work could not command such high prices. Even stranger and more ironic, he's accused of forging his own paintings and then denouncing his forgeries as forgeries!
Despite these absurd adventures, no painter ever left a body of work that was more replete with mystery. No painter was ever more poetic. Rene Magritte credits de Chirico with teaching him that the supreme art was poetry, and that a painter at his best, could be a poet with his brush and canvas.
More than any 20th Century painter, de Chirico's greatest paintings were like that. They were poems, songs of love. And they will haunt generations to come, long after Picasso, Matisse, and Monet have been forgotten. At their best, these memoirs are a haunting, unforgettable poem.
Autobiography of genius (in both senses).......1998-01-04
