Book Description

An unpretentious World War II allegory, authored with a wonderful human and humorous perspective. A naive lad from the pastoral Flint Hills of Kansas, colorfully narrates change from civilian life to becoming a well-trained combat soldier, doing what warriors have been conditioned to endure and do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-06-09

An excellent accounting of a young man's trip through WW2, his own. The genuineness of his reality comes through on every page. If you never heard the stories from your Dad, this book is a must read. If you have a son or daughter thinking of fighting for "democracy" this book is for them too.

4 out of 5 stars Raw Food Diet.......2007-09-19

This book is designed for folks who are interested in feeding their dogs a natural diet. It seems to be a precusor to the Barf Diet Books. It is technical in it's approach but describes a recommended diet which takes about two sentences. For anyone who feeds this type of diet to their dogs this book gives an excellent rationale for doing so. Although currently there is a "feud" going on between the author and those involved in BARF diets. In my opinion they are basically the same and only differ at the fringes.

    4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-08-29

Very interesting, however I do feed raw but I don't agree with feeding grains as Lonsdale does. But between him and Billinghurst if everyone would read their books they would never feed kibble again..

3 out of 5 stars Too much about Tom Lonsdale.......2007-02-12

This book is really a lot more about the author than about raw feeding. It seems to centralize on the problems he faced getting his views accepted (raw feeding dogs) If you really want a basic book that is easier to understand and gets right to the point, then purchase his other book - Work Wonders. Has basically the same info, but without all the personal details.

1 out of 5 stars The matyrdom of Tom Londsdale.......2006-08-29

I bought a few books on raw feeding and holistic diets and I have to say this is the worst. It's not even about raw meaty bones. This book is more about how the author feels martyred by both the Australian Vet Association and the pet food industry. I guess this might make an interesting story if thats the kind of thing you want to read about. I just found it a tiresome tirade.

Work Wonders, by the same author, is much more informative about raw feeding and can be downloaded for free at [...].

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, but boring........2005-12-26

I love the idea of a raw diet for dogs and I agree with his views on commercial petfood.
I just got really sick of reading about dental issues. It seems like 80% of this book is about dental hygeine.
The book should be named "Raw Meaty Bones promote Dental Hygeine", not "Health".

I also feel he should've given more in-depth information on what to feed/ how to feed.
He is also a proponent of feeding wings and backs alone- that is just TOO MUCH BONE.

If you look at a whole prey animal, the percentage of bone in it will be 8%-12%. Chicken wings/ backs alone are 50% bone. They are not a biologically appropriate way of feeding!
He does deserve credit for stating that whole prey is best, though.

Lonsdale has great ideas, but he should've published a separate book about canine dental health, or not gone off about it so much, and his specific diet recommendations are lacking/ somewhat misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Things Are My Life.......2005-08-02

I grew up in a southern country home where Sweet things where a part of every meal. Probably why I am diabetic. JoAnna Lund won me over with her book," Cooking Healthy With A Man In Mind" where I found her "Banana Split Pie." This is a wonderful and satisfying dessert. Her "Healthy Exchanges Diabetic Dessert Cookbook" is a must for diabetics. These desserts are satisfying and a delight to prepare. Ms. Lund is a master at simplifying cooking using products you normally find in the cupboard and around the kitchen. I am a big fan of her style of cooking. I recommend all diabetics consider this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars absolutly informative.......1999-07-15

This is a book about everything you need to know to start right with hamsters. Firstly there is a preface about the hamster itself, then appearance and colour variation. Next is the selection, this tells you where you should go and select a hamster, the best age to get one so you can tame it yourself, how to check whether the hamster you may want to choose is in good physical condition by looking for friendliness, good health, soft sleek fur, bright clear eyes and a general feel of solidity. A wet tail is also a sign of bad health. Then we come into housing, the cage should be deeply padded with a good absorbent material you may use wood shavings or a commercially prepared hamster litter. Try and find a cage equipped with an exercise wheel (for your hamster to get plenty of exercise). Then a page about feeding, how to feed them and what to feed them. Then a few more pages about taming, trainig, breeding, mutations and health. The best bits are the lovely photos of the hamsters and the diagrams because they really explain things properly. The book is well illusrated which children like to see. I recommend this book to people who have firstly got a new hamster and people who are going to get one. It's a book that explains things in large detail, so I think it should be in the age range of 8+. Over-all this book came in rather handy when I first got my hamster.

Very disappointing when it comes to the projects; I found the designs crude and not at all anything I'd want to put on display. The author obviously loves his subject and offers some very good tips on working with bamboo, but the overall style is very dated looking on most.

The Rodale Organic Gardening Book series is a consistently reliable basic reference, and the colorful New American Backyard is no exception. Kris Medic is an arborist who, according to her jacket biography, is almost absurdly qualified to write about garden design. In this comfortable, useful volume she provides a guide to sprucing up the backyard for those of us who weren't born knowing what an NPK ratio is.

Suburban America's obsession with the perfect swath of green hasn't been an altogether healthy one, but thankfully the excessive use of weed-killers, overmowing, and wasteful watering habits that characterized the last half-century of lawn and garden care are being reevaluated in books like Medic's. Medic emphasizes that adoption of responsible organic methods can actually be more effective than chemical intervention in obtaining that lush lawn of our dreams. It's just plain sensible, for example, to cut the grass at a relatively high level and to leave the clippings on the ground: the long grass and clippings create shade, which limits opportunities for weed growth and keeps the roots and soil cool and moist longer, requiring less frequent watering.

It's also easier--and that's the message at the heart of this book. The most thumbed-through and soil-stained pages of The New American Backyard are sure to be those in the second half, "Timesaving Lawn and Garden Techniques." How to sharpen lawnmower blades yourself, how to prune a tree or thin out a bush with the speed and confidence of a pro, how to choose a grass-seed mixture that's right for your yard (and decipher those cryptic seed-bag labels), how to use water efficiently--Medic's valuable tips will help you to cut down the time spent weeding or waving the hose over the lawn on Sunday mornings when you'd rather be relaxing with a cup of coffee and the paper.

The first part of the book contains the ubiquitous checklists, using which the prospective gardener is supposed shape a vision of the ideal (but doable) backyard environment. The reader should not be discouraged by the presence of these vague lists--in books of this sort they're never particularly helpful, and aren't in this one--because Medic, perhaps anticipating our impatience with authors who prod us into penciling into their books what we already know, quickly abandons that annoying tack in favor of the juicy stuff: well-illustrated, real-life landscaping makeovers and detailed descriptions of how to deal with common yard problems. We learn how and what to plant in those low marshy areas and in small or odd-shaped lots, and how to reduce street noise, wind, and glare. A directory of Medic's "top plant picks" features thorough evaluations of specific varieties of trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines, perennials, and annuals. While the list is certainly not exhaustive, and of course not every plant is suited to every region of the country, Medic's riffs on, for example, the amur maple or English ivy will give novices an idea of the factors to consider in choosing what to plant: the variety's mature size, hardiness and heat zones, preferred sites (sun or shade, swampy soil or dry, and so on), pruning requirements, and pest and disease issues.

Readers whose backyards have ever been besieged by Japanese beetles or crabgrass may have a hard time accepting Medic's recommendations on the cure front (shake the bugs off?), but on the prevention side, this book makes it easy to avoid or at least ameliorate those problems in the planning and planting stages. Xeriscaping, composting, and preventive pest control have never seemed more practical than in Medic's water-wise and pesticide-poor chapters. --Liana Fredley

I picked up a copy of this book from Kris Medic back in October, when she was a guest speaker at our garden-club meeting. I purchased it before her presentation, and by the time her talk was over, I was already thinking I had made a good decision. Having lived in Columbus IN for 17 years, I recognized her name and knew of her devotion to organic techniques for designing and maintaining landscapes. I had no intention of picking up the book and reading it cover-to-cover, that is not how I would usually approach a book like this. However, that is exactly what happened. I took it along to one of my son's ortho. appt's. In for a bit of a wait, I started reading. I became completely engrossed and was very surprised when my son came out and an hour had passed! I had read nearly one-third of the book. It is rare for me to pick up a 'how to' gardening book and read it in this fashion. This book is a real gem for anyone, especially those who garden (or wish to) organically. Kris touches on everything you can think of to do with landscaping or gardening, including many charts and lists to help guide you in the pursuit of a great yard. I especially like her use of these flowcharts and lists to halp you reach your desired goals. Many of us don't put enough thought into our landscapes, until we've made many mistakes. This book could hlp new or aspiring gardeners to prevent those early mistakes, and help those of us who have already made them, redeem ourelves. Kris includes all aspects of landscaping, including her top ten choices of favorite trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, perennials, and annuals. These choices are pictured and include all the information you need and why she considers it a top-pick. You will also find chapters on hardscaping, reducing water use, organic methods for preventing pests and diseases and a very informative section on the correct way to prune. This is a book I do not plan to loan out--get your own copy! I imagine I will refer to it often. Many of the methods and ideas included will mean less time for work and maintenance, and more time for me to enjoy the landscape. This spring, I plan to stop mowing a good portion of our yard. It's simply not necessary, and may have a detrimental effect, keeping beneficial insects and animals from our property. Instead, with Kris' permission, I'll have more time to sit on the garden bench and watch the butterflies.

5 out of 5 stars "Parent As Coach" is worth reading!.......2007-05-07

Raising teens is such a challenge! Diana Haskins book helps parents see their role as parents change from being a manager of a "child" to a coach of an "almost" adult. What a perspective! Her ideas are down to earth and doable for everyday parents--not a lot of jargon. Simple interactive techniques improve communication as parents spend the last few years of a child's "at home" life getting them ready for being on their own. Parents will be better people themselves as a result of practicing her ideas.

If you want to be a #1 parent of a teenage adolescent-read this book! By applying the principles contained within this book, you are sure to become a #1 parent in teenagers' eyes. They are timeless techniques that really work! Yes, motivating teenagers to do what they are supposed to do is a challenge every parent must undergo. But books like this one make transfer the burden into a positive experience.

Another point about this book. I love the wonderful, practical examples that Diana gives you throughout the book. You get to see first hand of how others applied these timeless principles and how you can do the same. You will now have the tools to help your teenager go from "teenager" into a "mature young adult"

I think this book should be a mandatory reading for every parent on his or her child's 13th birthday. It's the best manual on how to parent a teenager that I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

As a mother of two, I have experienced the benefits of Diana Haskin's wisdom when it comes to connecting with children and approaching them with deep listening, respect, love and clear requests. Parent As Coach is personal, practical and offers sage advice for building a strong foundation with your beloved children, as well as all others near and dear to your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Developing Creative Contributors.......2001-03-25

I have found the advice in Parent As Coach to be clear, well thought-out, and immediately transferable to my experience coaching teenagers and families. The sheer practicality of the PAC approach places it far above most other books on the topic, and I highly recommend it to parents, older siblings, and anyone who finds themselves in the position of coaching, counseling or teaching teenagers.

This book receives my hardiest endorsement as a practical guide for moving beyond limited thinking about teenagers and on to developing the consciousness that will allow teens to become creative contributors of a caring society.

Diana Haskins has written a useful guide for understanding and applying the concepts of how to coach anyone to the unique challenges faced by growing young adults. She begins this work by acknowledging the importance of creating a strong foundation for the relationship by: deepening the connection between adult and teen; strengthening the relationship through heartfelt, effective communications; and fostering a progressive learning dynamic between both parties by laying the groundwork for mutual respect.

From this perspective of honoring and respecting the wisdom inherent in each teen, Diana presents the keys to effective life coaching and addresses some of the most essential concerns teens and parents face today. She reinforces her message by using the language of coaching as a means to respect and nurture, rather than diminish or abandon, the many talents, gifts and insights every teen possesses, giving them the confidence and courage necessary to developing their own unique, and therefore worthwhile, manifestations as fully expressing human beings.

By sharing the principles of coaching in this book about coaching teens, Ms. Haskins has given everyone interested in understanding the heart of coaching, an easy to read, practical guide for learning and applying coaching skills to every relationship. I look forward to additional work by this author, in part because of her clear, well-conceived style of writing that turns sometimes-clinical theories of parenting into a very straightforward sequence of steps that can be practiced by anyone of any age to improve the quality of their relationships. It is this transference-capacity that makes Parent As Coach such a useful guide for all readers.

Parent As Coach is a book I am happy to recommend to my own clients, professional associates and family. I recommend it to you as well.

4 out of 5 stars Comical, obsessive, paranoid, ironic, and brilliant........2002-04-05

In the first section, this book is the best set of personal memoirs I have ever read, surpassing even Robert Graves' "Goodbye to All That". De Chirico could have been a great novelist, had he chosen that path. His descriptions of a childhood in Greece are unforgettable.

But his novel "Hebdomeros" was also a beautiful piece of writing. It's interesting that three major painters associated with surrealism, De Chirico, Dali and Magritte, were also great writers. (De Chirico would hate to be associated with surrealism, but like it or not - he's their Daddy.)

I'm disappointed in part II of the memoirs. I'm also disappointed in what de Chirico does not tell us in part I. He barely touches on his relationship with Apollinaire, wherein the poet would give titles to some of de Chirico's paintings. He doesn't mention his thoughts on learning of Apollinaire's death. He doesn't tell us which paintings he titled, and which were given names by Apollinaire.

On one page, Paul Eluard had good enough taste to purchase his paintings, and thus was not beyond redemption. Yet on the very next page, Eluard was an onanist and a mystical cretin. What happened in a few paragraphs to change his opinion of the man? De Chirico doesn't tell us, except to blame the corruption of Eluard on Andre Breton.

Many details important to students of the era were not even mentioned. Isabella Far is written about at length. Yet de Chirico does not even mention his wedding to her. They are companions for decades and suddenly, he refers to her as his wife. Duh? When did you get married? Where were you? What was the wedding like? Somebody correct me if I overlooked something.

He outlived almost all of his enemies, (and according to de Chirico, his enemies were more numerous than the stars in the sky). He outlived almost all of the surrealists. What did he think when learning of the deaths of Eluard or Breton? What was his opinion of Magritte, to whom he had once written a friendly thank you note? What was it Magritte had written to him?

Unfortunately, details like this are not to be found. Instead, we get an enemies list of Italian critics and modernist painters, whose names most readers in the English-speaking world will not recognize.

Even so, the character revealed in these memoirs is unique. He's obsessive, paranoid, romantic, imperious to the modern world, and at times comical. But he is always guided by a stubborn integrity and a search for what he called "mystery and poetry".

Yet, he is involved in such comical episodes. He's been accused of forging his early paintings and selling them. He's accused of denouncing some of his genuine early paintings as forgeries because he was jealous of the high prices they were drawing. His later work could not command such high prices. Even stranger and more ironic, he's accused of forging his own paintings and then denouncing his forgeries as forgeries!

Despite these absurd adventures, no painter ever left a body of work that was more replete with mystery. No painter was ever more poetic. Rene Magritte credits de Chirico with teaching him that the supreme art was poetry, and that a painter at his best, could be a poet with his brush and canvas.

More than any 20th Century painter, de Chirico's greatest paintings were like that. They were poems, songs of love. And they will haunt generations to come, long after Picasso, Matisse, and Monet have been forgotten. At their best, these memoirs are a haunting, unforgettable poem.

5 out of 5 stars Autobiography of genius (in both senses).......1998-01-04

De Chirico, historically the first (small s) surrealist (even the Surrealists admit this) was exalted as a visionary for his earliest paintings, then conveniently vilified by his followers (led by the despicable Andre Breton) when he radically changed his style. The bitterness and frustration of this situation (and it was a long frustration -- De Chirco lived well into his nineties) is very much to the fore in this remarkable book. The mysterious qualities of his painting, too, are much in evidence, and great care is lavished on seemingly trivial incidents whose significance is left very much to the reader's own cogitations. Unforgettable are such passages as his defense of "maisons closes" (whorehouses) as decent workplaces, his memories of the Dalcroze-inspired Braun sisters, and the strange juxtaposition of his being required as a boy to kiss a priest's hand with the frustration of having always to refuse his barbers' offers of a rubdown. Not a book for everyone, surely, but for those seeking to unravel one of the great enigmas of 20th century art, essential. Footnote: De Chirico's status as a painter is currently going through a fascinating process of re-evaluation, and the "new" case for De Chirico is perhaps most eloquently put forth in a beautifully produced catalogue from Hunter College and the Fondazione Giorgio e Isa DeChirico in Rome, titled "Giorgio De Chirico and America," filled with superb reproductions, documentary photographs and stimulating essays.
