I thought it would be a beginner's guide but I guess the astounding photographs of older people doing incredible poses was meant to inspire. It didn't help me get started!

BEST yoga book for seniors.......2007-01-15

This body/mind turned 60 last year. I have been practicing yoga (off and on) since 1975 and have started a yoga and meditation teacher training program with the Aura Wellness Center. I have over 30 yoga books and feel "The New Yoga for People Over 50" is THE BEST yoga book for seniors; it is my yoga bible! Very inspiring stories of seniors into yoga with great pictures. AND very readable...the print isn't too small!

After recently reading Amazon review by "More hype than hope", I would like to counter her negative opinion with a few positive thoughts on "The New Yoga for People Over 50" by Suza Francina.

I first read this book (and subsequently reviewed it) in 1999. My enthusiasm has not waned. This, to me, was and is the most common sense yoga book I have ever read.

Its purpose is to inform the reader about various issues affecting those over 50 and the ways yoga can help. It is a serious and helpful resource for older students and teachers who instruct seniors. The "success stories" (term used by reviewer) are meant to inspire and encourage and do not include any specifically by the author (to glorify herself as suggested by the reviewer).

Yoga classes are not "elitist" (term used by reviewer). They are commonplace in many locations and range from YMCA, gyms, senior centers, etc. Additionally, many yoga studios offer instruction for all ages and levels of ability, from beginner to advanced.

I still feel this book is an inspiration to learn and practice yoga. The models are real people, over 50, which in itself is an incentive. While some are longtime practitioners and famous teachers (like BKS Iyengar who wrote the foreward), many began yoga while in their 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. Perhaps someday "More hype" will meet Ms. Francina in person. She is an empowering teacher as well as a talented author.

Wow!.......2005-10-16

I own all of Nick Stellino's books but had used this one least b/c of my fear of pasta, pizza, and panini--in other words, the ever-dreaded carbos! But it's fall now, and I was ready to throw my fear of carbo-loading to the wind...first stop, PIZZA. Today was my 'maiden voyage,' (and I had hoped it wouldn't end up like that of the Titanic!). I couldn't believe what smooth sailing it was. Nick gives alternate kneading methods, by hand or mixer--I chose the easy way out! I made enough dough for four 12" pizzas. (I got carried away with myself b/c it took no time or effort at all). Didn't have mozzerella to make pizza, so Nick conveniently had flatbread recipes--and that was where I began. With some fresh rosemary, garlic, a hint of red pepper, a sprinkle of parmesan cheese and olive oil, it was so simple and came out of the oven looking like...well, bread! Like it was supposed to...not a 'wannabe,' but the real thing. I impressed myself, I must say. I'll make it for a dinner I'm planning to give next weekend. Dough is easily refrigerated or frozen to use whenever. Another pleasant surprise--Nick tells you how to make pizza sauce, no need to buy it--using canned, jarred, or homemade as a base, then adding a few extra ingredients, blending in processor, done. That's another item crossed off my pizza grocery list. It was like he was leading me by the hand. I am so glad I had this book in my kitchen library. I'm getting ready to dive into pasta, and I know I'll be using this book again.

Great resource about Emu care, recommended highly.......1998-10-17

We were given a pair of Emus and needed an on hand resorce for keeping them healthy and happy. This is a great source of info covering everything from anatomy, to pen requirements, breeding and slaughter. I am very pleased with the purchase, well worth the money. The only thing it could add is about handleing...our male Emu kicks both to the front and backwards. They do not like dogs a bit and will try to attack an animal near the fenceline. ...Be careful around them and they are no problem at all.

This book is an excellent source of information needed to learn more about emu. Not technical. Very down to earth writing, giving you information from collecting and incubating eggs, to slaughtering. Discusses sickness in the birds and various diseases. Also discusses different housing and fencing needs for the birds.

OVER-RATED.......2004-02-17

This book contains a wide variety of topics on emus, but does not give enough useful detailed information. It is too generalized and seems afraid to mention actual brand names of feed and equipment.This is not a book for those looking for a step-by-step, detailed "how-to" reference guide.

The EMU Farmer's Handbook, Volume 2, Maria Minnaar.......2000-05-28

This is a thorough treatment on a hard-to-find subject. The book covers all aspects of raising emus, including: housing, health, breeding, incubation, raising chicks, and marketing emu products. The author, Maria Minnaar, has been raising emus commercially since the mid-1980s. This book is aimed at the commercial emu farmer, with detailed information on veterinary care, breeding, meat cuts and emu oil processing. The author provides one chapter on raising Ostrich and Rhea, highlighting the differences between these birds and emus. There is an interesting section covering other ratites, the Cassowary, Kiwi, Moa and Elephant Bird, and a good bibliography of ratite information sources. The drawings and photographs are high-quality.

Deniece Schofield is absolutely wonderful. She led a seminar at a university near our home several years ago and was one of the most entertaining speakers I've ever heard. Though her topic of home organization does not normally lend itself to being humorous -- just let Deniece get started on how much clutter corn on the cob creates -- she made the prospect of deep cleaning seem like fun.

I'm sure I've saved our family thousands of dollars just from attending that one seminar. She gave us her philosphy of living on less -- we don't need all the gadgets and gizmos people try to sell us. Those items you think you can't live without are going to have to be stored somewhere, eventually.

Her long-term advice: keep life as simple as possible.

The great thing about her book is she REALLY is an expert. She uses all these fancy terms that make homemakers feel like we're really CEOs of small corporations. (And we are!) But now I can recite exactly which technique I'm using when I clean house. Her six work simplification techniques are priceless:

1. Think before you act.
2. Discard and sort.
3. Group.
4. Be motion-minded.
5. Accrue your benefits.
6. Preventive maintenance.

Read the book to find out what each means. All I can say is that "preventive maintenance" is a lovely term to have in your mind as you get your kids to keep their STUFF out of the family room.

The first couple of chapters build a foundation upon which her philosphy of family organization rests. Basically, she gives you reasons why you're not doing anybody favors by doing all the work yourself.

Her mantra of planning and scheduling make this book a must-read. She commiserates with overwhelmed homemakers by saying, "One of the big problems with housework is that it's never done. You can work for hours and hours and never feel like you've accomplished anything. But a schedule eliminates those feelings of frustration by giving you a stopping point. The work may not be finished, but YOU are."

The book is full of drawings, detailing her ideas, and would be a great gift for a new bride, new mom, or someone you know who is moving. In fact, she has a whole chapter on the art of moving peacefully -- yes, it can be done.

I can't say it better than a quote she borrowed from Winnie the Pooh's pal, Christopher Robin: "Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it's not all mixed up."

Very Useful.......2001-09-13

I would put forth that Confessions of a Happily Organized Family is more about the how to of organizing. She provides a wealth of suggestions for storage and organizing solutions that are not very expensive and easy to make and/or buy. I rate it five stars for the usefulness. My only thought about this is that much of this you can do yourself without buying the book.

However, if you are not sure where to begin or need ideas on storage, this is an excellent book. However, if you are interested in organizing your home and want a starter book, I would suggest you consider her other book Confessions of a Happily Organized Homemaker. In this book she discusses the whys, how tos, and what fors of organizing every aspect of your life. Also, it seems to me that much of what is in this the Family book is also in the Housewife book. Either way, both are good.

I really enjoyed Confession of an Organized Homemaker, but was tired of trying to do it all by myself, so I bought Confession of an Organized Family. There were some great tips on how to motivate others (husband and children) by setting an example, hold family meetings to discuss chores etc, and how to organize a playroom/familyroom. But the rest was mostly summary of the other book and suggestions to read the other book. PS. Don't let the book's titles fool you... I am a full time working mother not SAHM. And really did eventually get my stay at home husband to take on the 4-bucket strategy. It just took TIME.
