Book Description
This book presents a child's eye view of life in occupied Holland during World War II. While the author waited for the Allies to liberate his country he immersed himself in geography lessons, which gave him a window on the world. Today he is a geography professor at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., and the geography analyst for NBC News.
Customer Reviews:
hoi.......2001-10-02
Of the thousands of horrifying, somber, moving events that occurred during the time frame of the Third Reich, this story could not have been better retold than through the eyes of the Dutch geographer Harm de Blij.
This story hit a personal note in more ways than one. One reason being is, I am geographer myself, even before attending university. It also sent chills down my back when I read that Harm de Blij lived about 1 km from where I lived in Soest while my father was stationed at Soesterberg Air Base in the early 1990's.
While I lived in the beautiful small city in the central Netherlands, I used to wonder what life was like, what happened, what did it feel like to live under Nazi occupation. After reading this book, I now have a better feeling of what occurred.
I hope one day that I will return to the Netherlands and Soest with my young daughter, and tell her stories about my life in The Netherlands. I also wish to meet with Dr. Harm de Blij and further discuss this book, as well as geography in general
A True Story of Survival.......2000-10-13
The understated title of this short, well-written book did not prepare me for the profound impact of this story. In fact, I was compelled to read it cover to cover in one evening. Harm de Blij relates the account of his childhood in Holland during World War II, when his family's idyllic existence is transformed into a challenge for survival. Seen through the eyes of a pre-adolescent, the ability to transcend the perils of German occupation and focus on their love of music and geography reflects the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. The intensity of their struggle to maintain some semblance of their former life and survive the war is truly inspirational. This is a "must read" for young and old alike.

Black & White Drawings.......2007-01-24
The information as far as text (information) is excellent; however, It would be much better if it came with full color pictures instead of simple drawings--which makes the points hard to find.
A much better approach (with full color [real] pictures) is:
*****ACUPRESSURE -Naturally Better. By: Carola Beresford Cooke, Peter Albright.
It gets to the point--literally speaking--without so much unnecessary explanation. By the way, I found out about this book through somebody else's previous review (on this book).
Healing with Pressure Point Therapy.......2006-08-13
If you have a fairy god mother, she will tell you buy this book. So instead of talking to your friends about your mutual aches and pains, invite them over and have an Pressure Point therapy klatach. You'll learn something new and feel a whole lot better.

Book Description
David Burke is a new culinary star. And in this, his first cookbook, he presents the innovative and inventive cooking that has made him, in the words of one rival, "the most copied chef in New York."
The first non-Frenchman to win France's highest cooking honor, and voted Chef of the Year by his peers in America, David Burke is a true original. Born in America, trained here and in France by such luminaries as Pierre Troisgros and Gaston Lenotre, he has developed a style all his own, emphasizing the twin goals of taste and beauty.
The Burke style blends the principles of haute cuisine with French country cooking, American regional specialties, and ethnic touches. He has taken to new heights the originally European technique of building a dish, rather than displaying food flat upon a plate. He uses ingredients the way a child uses blocks, building, creating layers of food, achieving a remarkable melange of tastes, colors, and textures.
In presenting this concept here for the home chef, he breaks down seemingly complex dishes into their component parts. He demonstrates that what looks intricate (and fabulous) can be easy to make. His classical training, combined with an artist's eye and a rich imagination, provides the reader with a genuinely new way of looking at and preparing food.
This is a soup-to-nuts cookbook, from stunning hors d'oeuvres such as Pastrami Salmon, and Parfait of Artichoke, Goat Cheese, and Marinated Vegetables, to dazzling desserts like Three-Layered Mousse Parfait, Red-Berry Sorbet, and Ginger Ice Cream. The heart of the book, though, lies in Burke's signature main courses, which he builds into delicious dishes wonderful to look at and easily transformable into more ornate delights or simplified into convenient and lighter one-dish meals. Among them: Pan Roasted Monkfish with Green-Onion Sauce and Ziti and Eggplant Bouquet; Roast Cornish Hens with Saffron Potatoes and Chorizo Sausages; Sirloin Steak with Shiitake-Mushroom Hash and Pickled Vegetables.
Burke is not a go-by-the-book chef. His chapter on flavoring your own oils, vinaigrettes, and sauces reveals a whole new world of intense and delectable flavors. He combines bread crumbs with ground mustard, caraway, poppy, fennel, or coriander seeds to create a remarkable crust.
Burke opens up for the home cook an exciting new way of thinking about presentation (a whole chapter is devoted to the subject). Plates do not have to match, he says. "Some dishes look better on pottery, some on porcelain." And he sees no reason why the pattern that marches around the perimeter of a soup plate has to copycat the pattern of a plate used for a main course, or even the pattern of the dish next to it.
Introducing a cuisine that both delights and surprises the palate and the eye, Cooking with David Burke is a book full of energy, enthusiasm, and true culinary invention -- a stunning debut for a fresh and welcome new voice in American cooking.
Customer Reviews:
A book from which to learn.......2001-03-23
Upon considering this book for purchase, one must be committed to embrace and learn the concept of turning ingredients into something extraordinary. Of course, most conventional basics are the foundation to most any cookbook. However, David's Burke's book is one that will challenge the better than average home chef to go far beyond what is common kitchen knowledge. This book will literally open doors that you didn't know existed. It will force you to think and understand the purpose and culinary importance of many things that we often take for granted. By doing this, the reader is enriched with an approach that will transform his or her home kitchen into a studio for their next masterpiece. Needless to say, I love this book because it teaches many things beyond a traditional cookbook. It is an insight into a world that is not often seen by many resonably accomplished home chefs(of which I'd like to consider myself). There is no doubt that many of the dishes presented here will be a challenge for some people. However, there is truly no better way to advance to the next level than with the lessons learned here.
Complicated for the home kitchen.......2000-09-10
The recipes in this book are very complicated for the home cook, especially if you are cooking alone. They represent dishes conceived for and prepared in a restaurant kitchen. I'm a competent cook and the 2 dishes that I made were delicious but quite time consuming, and therefore only suitable for special occasions with much beforehand preparation. We've eaten at the restaurant and the food was wonderful, unfortunately difficult to duplicate, as most of the recipes involve multiple ingredients and several stages of preparation.

A little mystery (but not much).......2004-05-22
This was an okay mystery. It was a little obvious at times, and basically solveable before the end, but left a few twists and turns that kept it interesting. The boxcar children decide to help their new neighbors move in next door. Everything about the neighobrs is mysterious: From the strange gothic style house, to the front gate with the spider designs, to the moving boxes with the mysterious emblems on them and the neighbors extreme interest in spiders! The Boxcar children become determined to uncover the neighbors strange secrets!

Customer Reviews:
My favorite origami book so far.......2007-09-04
The finished models in this book are great, they are clearly identifiable species, not just generic fish, crabs, etc.
What really makes the book stand out, however, are the folding sequences. The steps flow with a natural rythm, and every tricky step is clearly explained. Because the authors have created unique bases for each model, the results of a given step are often pleasantly surprising.
I have a pile of origami books, and this is my favorite so far by a pretty wide margin. When I finish folding everything in it, I will probably fold them all again because they are so much fun.
Wonderful origami book.......2005-09-30
This superb book contains an enormous range of origami models representing various forms of sea life. These range from sea urchins and starfish through to the Blackdevil Angler Fish and the almost impossible to fold Chambered Nautilus Shell. I have in my time folded most of the models and my favourites include the Angler Fish, Goldfish and the Murex shell which is wonderful in a textured foil.
Most of the models will require some folding experience, even the easier ones and the most difficult ones like the Atlantic Purple Sea Urchin and Blackdevil Angler Fish are really for experts only, but most folders of intermediate level and upwards will find something to enjoy. It is definitely a book which will help you to develop your folding skills but be sure to have plenty of paper on hand!
Each section includes an interesting introduction to the natural history of the life forms it is covering and the book is well laid out with clear computerised diagrams. It's an origami book I've come back to again and again over the years and which remains one of my treasures. I recommend it.
Not Impossible, but a Challenge.......2004-04-17
I've owned this book for a number of years and only recently have I been able to fold most of the creatures in it. This book is definitely not for greenhorns, but if you look closely at every single diagramme in the book, and interpret them exactly and are very careful, every model in the book is foldable. The end result is gorgeous paper sea creatures that can impress basically anyone--yourself included. I've been amazed at how beautiful the things I'm folding from this book turn out.
Great Book.......2004-04-03
This is one of my favorite Origami books ever. If you are thinking about getting it you should. This book will appeal to any body, from beginner to advanced. I love the models in this book. It contains various models of many genera and cover many of the marine phylums such as variety of gastropods, cephalodops, crustaceans, and many fish from Angler Fish to sharks to Sun fish.
One of the best.......2004-03-21
This book is well written with easy to understand diagrams. The models range from easy to extremly hard, but most of the animals are high intermediate. Most of the diagrams are so specialized that they can't make other models from the base, but the end result is an elegant model that isn't bulky like other models of this difficulty. I have most of Montroll's and Lang's work, and this is one of the best. The deep sea angler fish is my favorite with a full set of teeth. The binding is breaking apart because I've used it so much. Overall this is a book with the best models!
(Watch the binding of the Dover books!)
Customer Reviews:
A detailed and informative book........2001-09-04
I like the book and am glad to have it. The information is thorough. We had it with us when we went on an outing, and it made the stay even more pleasurable. I wish the drawings were detailed and colored rather than just outlines of the plants. The color plates are too dark. Aside those two things, the book is worth having.
There is more then survival in the desert........2000-07-26
This is a wonderful concise book on edible and nonedible plants of the desert. She includes the Latin name for each plant making it easy to find out more about any one plant. Has good color plates, although I would have liked larger pictures of some of the plants.I am very glad I purchased it and I think anyone who likes seeing more in a plant then something to step on or over will enjoy it.I know I do.
This unusual book is entertaining and informative........1998-03-03
Ever dream of living off the land? A Taste of Nature is a guide to edible plants. This book tells you how to identify edible plants, and gives you a recipe for each plant. In addition, it is beautifully illustrated and reader-friendly.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable spiritual resource for Buddhist families........1999-09-11
This book includes a wide range of essays by lay people and ordained Zen Buddhist practitioners, poets, writers and children. It guides parents on how to nurture their own and their children's spirituality especially on mindfulness in everyday life. It's a great book while the next edition could include less stories from parents that may be very similar.
Book Description
Leonardo's writings on painting--among the most remarkable from any era--were never edited by Leonardo himself into a single coherent book. In this anthology the authors have edited material not only from his so-called Treatise on Painting but also from his surviving manuscripts and from other primary sources, some of which were here translated for the first time. The resulting volume is an invaluable reference work for art historians as well as for anyone interested in the mind and methods of one of the world's greatest creative geniuses.
