Book Description
When the Japanese brought the United States into World War II by bombing Pearl Harbor while their ambassador pretended to be negotiating in Washington the reaction spread across the country like the aftermath of an atomic blast. Among those who were inspired to enlist in their country's defense was a big band piano player. It would be hard to conceive of a more drastic change than the conversion of this loose living civilian into a United States Marine but the D Is managed it. Instead of the combat duty he had expected his superiors apparently found him more useful as a musical specialist. This book takes him through tours of duty at Parris Island, Camp Pendleton and Pearl Harbor. Some of the experiences and interesting comrades he describes will bring you chuckles. All of them will help you see the combatant inside of that uniform is a human being.

I'm biased, but this is great........2002-08-29
It was truly wonderful to read David's biographies of these great souls. There is quite a warts-and-all documentary style to this, but I really felt that I got into the lives of the people. For instance, I felt like I got a better picture of Billy Graham from the one chapter on him here than I did from the whole of Graham's autobiography.
Full disclosure: I know David a little, we go to church together. But it's STILL a great book. I hope you can still find it around.
Great writing from a great man........2000-09-15
What a wonderful book! I have the privilege of knowing the author, and I can say that Dr. Aikman has not only unveiled six great souls for our benefit, but has exposed the greatness of his own.
A word of gratitude to the author........1999-09-20
I really want to thank Mr. Aikman for this book. It illustrates the way a pure soul can be used by God to accomplish things beyond anyone's expectations. The author masterfully weaves anecdotes, interviews and biographical information to connect us in a unique way to these great people. I came away inspired to try and carry away remnants of each of these wonderful people. Thank you for such a masterful work. It is profound in so many ways.

Biographies of Six Spiritual Leaders.......1999-02-15
Great Souls: Six Who Changed the Century is undoubtedly one of the best collections of biographies I have read in years. In an era where celebrities are designated "heroes" and fifty or so men in New Orleans are called "Saints", it is refreshing - no it's inspiring - to read about five men and a woman whose attitudes and actions had a profound and positive effect on this century. David Aikman, a talented foreign correspondent for Time Magazine turned writer, has done a superb job capturing, in a few pages, the extraordinary lives and accomplishments of Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Pope John Paul II, Elie Wiesel and Nelson Mandela. If you are looking for perfect people, you won't find them in Aikman's book. What you will find, however, are six individuals who again and again, rose above their times and circumstances to change, if only for a brief time, the course of human events. Aikman's astute observations into the worldly and spiritual lives of these great souls hold important lessons for all of us today. Mother Teresa's inexhaustible compassion for the poorest of the poor, Nelson Mandela's amazing capacity to forgive, Billy Graham's urgent quest for salvation for the human soul, Solzhenitsyn's implacable pursuit of the truth, Pope John Paul's passion for human dignity and Eli Wiesel's constant reminders of the profound wickedness that lurks in the hearts of men, these are some of the lessons in store for those who read this enjoyable and inspirational book. Perhaps the best chapter is the last. Here Aikman uses Eli Wiesel's compelling and tragic story to inquire into the nature of evil. Was Adolph Hitler a charismatic but misguided despot or Satan incarnate? Was the Holocaust "a mutation on a cosmic scale" or "merely the natural shoots watered by Europe's longtime subterranean lake of anti-Semitism"? As we move from this millennium to the next, hopefully the brilliant lights of these great souls will illuminate the answers to these questions and be a lamp unto the uncertain path that lies before us.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Sometimes, the legacy of depression includes a wisdom beyond one's years, a depth of passion unexperienced by those who haven't traveled to hell and back. Off the charts in its enlightening, comprehensive analysis of this pervasive yet misunderstood condition, The Noonday Demon forges a long, brambly path through the subject of depression--exposing all the discordant views and "answers" offered by science, philosophy, law, psychology, literature, art, and history. The result is a sprawling and thoroughly engrossing study, brilliantly synthesized by author Andrew Solomon.
Deceptively simple chapter titles (including "Breakdowns," "Treatments," "Addiction," "Suicide") each sit modestly atop a virtual avalanche of Solomon's intellect. This is not a book to be skimmed. But Solomon commands the language--and his topic--with such grace and empathy that the constant flow of references, poems, and quotations in his paragraphs arrive like welcome dinner guests. A longtime sufferer of severe depression himself, Solomon willingly shares his life story with readers. He discusses updated information on various drugs and treatment approaches while detailing his own trials with them. He describes a pharmaceutical company's surreal stage production (involving Pink Floyd, kick dancers, and an opener à la Cats) promoting a new antidepressant to their sales team. He chronicles his research visits to assorted mental institutions, which left him feeling he would "much rather engage with every manner of private despair than spend a protracted time" there. Under Solomon's care, however, such tales offer much more than shock value. They show that depression knows no social boundaries, manifests itself quite differently in each person, and has become political. And, while it may worsen or improve, depression will never be eradicated. Hope lies in finding ways--as Solomon clearly has--to harness its powerful lessons. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
The Noonday Demon examines depression in personal, cultural, and scientific terms. Drawing on his own struggles with the illness and interviews with fellow sufferers, doctors and scientists, policy makers and politicians, drug designers and philosophers, Andrew Solomon reveals the subtle complexities and sheer agony of the disease. He confronts the challenge of defining the illness and describes the vast range of available medications, the efficacy of alternative treatments, and the impact the malady has on various demographic populations -- around the world and throughout history. He also explores the thorny patch of moral and ethical questions posed by emerging biological explanations for mental illness. With uncommon humanity, candor, wit, and erudition, award-winning author Solomon takes readers on a journey of incom-parable range and resonance into the most pervasive of family secrets. His contribution to our understanding not only of mental illness but also of the human condition is truly stunning.
Customer Reviews:
Very thorough..........2007-06-26
... but a little opinionated, which you should definitely expect with a topic as personal as depression.
Best in-depth book possibly that there is.......2007-03-01
I haven't read this, but my wife has. She doesn't read many books cover to cover, but she did this one. And it's a big book. She found it informative, and that the information in the book made sense, based on her experience with our own lives. She said it's the best book on the topic she's found. A phychologist that I know has also told me she thinks it's one of the best books in her experience, too.
Quality of Life--Not the Existence of Life.......2006-12-31
"I am terrified by this dark thing--that sleeps in me; all day I feel its soft, feathery turnings, its malignity." (Sylvia Plath)
"I must hurriedly note more symtoms of the disease, so that I can medicate myself next time." (Virginial Woolf)
"This is an element of blackness." (Emily Dickinson)
Julia Kristeva called depression "The Black Sun."
Hamlet named it "The pale cast of thought."
Dante described it as "Black Wood."
And Andrew Solomon describes his depression in this metaphor---It feels like a vine slowly choking a vast oak tree."
"The Noonday Demon" will not tell the reader that there is only one way to solve or cure depression. Every individual is unique--thus---every individual will need to search for their own direction, their own path, and may come to the realization that depression really does not have a cure--but those people can learn from it, and gain knowledge of ways to live with the depression--intergrate it--and as Solomon says" learn to embrace it.
Andrew Solomon gives the reader a million directions to follow and numerous points of view. Nineteen million Americans suffer from chronic depression--What the hell are we going to do about it? Solomon does not give the reader answers, but does the research for us: statistics, interviews, studies, drugs, talk therapy, positive thinking, genetics, pychotherapy, psychobiology, Freudian views, Plato's writings, and of course, Andrew Solomon uncovers every secret and has no boundaries when writing about his own stuggle with the "Black Beast."
"I had to have my father cut up my lamb chops to feed to me." Solomon confesses. And to add a little humor in the midst of blackness--he uses this sentence throughout the book when friends called and he was having a bad day---"I'm afraid of lamb chops again, he would admit.
This book is for everybody, not just people who suffer from depression. We all need the knowledge, understanding, insight, and empathy (not indifference) for those 19 million people out there trying to find their way back into the light (people from our own families!)
"Noonday Demon" is a beautiful book that challenges all of us to open our minds and hearts and stop thinking of depression as a weakness--but instead, as a strength---that can be intergrated, embraced, and understood.
"It is the quality of life, not the existence of life." Andrew Solomon
A self-absorbed whine from a privileged pill popper.......2006-12-27
Solomon's research on the history and treatment of depression is impressive, but his anecdotal stories on his own and others' experiences will set back the public perception of the affliction 70 years! The clincher was when he describes a depressive friend who found some respite from her condition when her family bought her a pony (!) We should all be so lucky... and that's what you'll find yourself mumbling time and again on reading this book. From Solomon's endless supply of friends at his beck and call and seemingly able to drop their lives completely and at a moment's notice and for weeks at a time to pep talk and care for him, to his changing of doctors... er, "pharmacologists" and drug "cocktails" as often as most people change underwear, to his unnamed and unbelievably generous health plan that foots the bill for all this, you're ultimately left feeling that this is nothing more than a self-absorbed whine from a privileged pill popper who, together with his countless friends, seems to have little visible means of financial support (in Manhattan, no less!) as the characters of "Friends."
This book "Tells it like it is.".......2006-12-20
I am an Internal Medicine physician who suffers from major depression. In retrospect, I probably began having episodes as early as age ten. However, I had to wait until my last year of medical school while doing my psychiatric rotation to find out "what had been wrong with me" for all those years - and of course, I had to diagnose myself without the help of anyone else. Prior to then, I had had episodes where I had become dangerously suicidal, and I thank my lucky stars that I am still here to tell about it. I had also consulted with no less than my own personal doctor, two social workers, and a psychiatrist (with whom I met for several weeks) during the worst of it, and EVERY SINGLE PROFESSIONAL COMPLETELY MISSED THE DIAGNOSIS. (Thank you very much.)
Andrew Solomon's book is an incredibly accurate, rich and resourceful text of immense depth and humanity, and reflects my own personal, as well as professional, experiences with depression. I have recommended this book, not only to many of my patients, but also as necessary reading for all health care professionals. Most of the medical books and journals dealing with depression provide very little useful information for diagnosing and treating depression in the "real world" - giving only instead technical generalities and "lists of criteria" that would indeed miss depression in many patients. (For example, no useful and concrete examples are given when describing "Psychomotor Retardation".) Mr. Solomon's book would go a long way to explaining to the "uninitiated" what the subjective experience of depression is like. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Barbie Doll and Me by Nicky Epstein.......2007-01-05
I have been buying quite a few of Nicky Epsteins books and have found this book to be up to her excellent high standard of quality design, instructions and gorgeous photos which both myself and my grandaughters love looking at to choose which outfit to make next.
Great patterns for the whole family.......2006-01-07
This book goes far beyond Barbie. It has become my favorite knitting pattern book!
The doll patterns are adorable, but usually call for tiny amounts of fine-gauge, hard-to-find yarns. I personally am not planning to knit a doll sweater. If you are a Barbie Doll lover though, you will certainly find some wonderful things to make.
But the book also has patterns for girls, boys, women and men (one "Dad" sweater). Nicky Epstein has some wonderful techniques in her patterns which make for beautifully finished sweaters. I am at the advanced-beginner level, and her book makes it easy to turn out professional looking sweaters by using methods like a three-needle bind-off at the shoulders, and making sleeves by picking up stitches at the shoulder and knitting down toward the cuff.
The writer suggest specific yarns to use, but she also gives you plenty of information about gauge and yardage so that it is easy to substitute a different yarn.
My daughter and I love to look through the book and pick out our "next" patterns. There are lots of matching mother and daughter patterns (plus doll, of course) which look equally nice on women and girls. I have already made the father-and-son rugby sweaters, and my next project will be a soft little cardigan for my daughter, with a fluffy collar and cuffs and matching fluffy headband. For myself I would like to make the raglan sleeved turtleneck.
Nicky Epstein has some awesome knitting books out on embellishments and edges, and home decor. I wish she would write some more sweater patterns too, because she makes it very easy to make a great looking garment.

This definitive guide explains clearly what Hepatitis C is, outlines the course of the disease and the associated symptoms, and describes how it is transmitted. The author discusses available treatments as well as lifestyle changes that may help. Extensive sections on herbs, vitamins, and nutritional supplements are also included.
Customer Reviews:
Hep C Handbook.......2007-08-26
The Hep C handbook gives an extensive medical perspective for anyone dealing with hepatitis C. Though somewhat more technical than other books available on this subject the book is a comprehensive resource including many testimonials from those living with thie disease.
The Hepatitis C hand Book.......2001-06-07
This book is a must have for all who work with people with the hepatitis C, have Hepatitis C, or loves someone who has it. This book saves lives ! Thank you Mr. Dolan.
A Light in a Sea of Despair.......2000-09-20
I undertook a two-year very brutal drug treatment for HCV, and was recently miraculously cleared of the disease. There were times I felt like giving up, but relied again and again on the encouraging information I gleaned from this book. It is informative, well-written, and emotionally supportive. My Doctor wanted a copy too, since sadly, there is little information availible in the medical community. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering a treatment approach, or wanting a supportive source of compassionate and concise information.
Finally ,the book I have been looking for !.......2000-08-29
Excellent book full of vital information. I'm so happy someone is getting the word out about treatment with Acupuncture and Chinese herbs! Dolan doesn't capitalize on the lack of treatment for Hep C by writing herbal treatments you can try at home. He emphasizes the need for a well trained herbalist. This is very important. Every one who has Hepatitis C should read this book. Then they should insist that their doctor reads it! It has a wealth of information for both the patient who has Hep C and the practitioner's who treat it. I can say this because I have the virus and I'm also a Chinese herbal practitioner.
A Must Read Book.......2000-07-15
Matthew Dolan has created the best companion a person with HCV can have. GIven the severity of HCV it is astonishing that there are so few decent books on the disease. In fact, there are only two: Stephen Buhner's Herbs for Hepatitis C and Matthew Dolan's. The Hepatitis C Handbook is simply the best and most supportive overview of hepatitis C on the market. The depth of research is remarkable, the insights of its author remarkable as well. BUY THIS BOOK!

Was Georgia really so bad?.......2004-09-06
It's incredible how much less fun a biography is to read when the author seems to hate his or her subject. Why would they choose to spend hours and hours of research on somebody if they don't think that the person is worth it? It must be some sort of competition.
I found myself frequently thinking back to the Frida Kahlo bio written by Hayden Herrera. In that, the biographer's admiration for the artist was infectious, and was based on her body of work, which was illustrated throughout the book. But in this case, there are hardly any reproductions, because the writer concentrates on gossip and O'keeffe's shortcomings.
However, the biography is very thorough and addictive in a guilty pleasure sort of way.
digs for dirt at the expense of art, but is a fun read.......2002-06-29
This is a good book, but the author does not seem to like either O-Keeffe or her husband Stieglitz. He covers their art a bit but without enthusiasm and instead seems to target their personal foibles and sexual peccadillos, which were many and indeed strange. This is valid reporting and ceratinly covers a necessary part of the story, but after a while it gets boring. However, in many sections the author speculates in strange ways on details of their intimate life that cannot be known, such as positiing that the origin of O'Keeffe's "discreet lesbianism" came from cryptically documented (hence essentially unprovable) sexual molestation as a child. If you want to look at the art, you have to go elsewhere. I enjoyed this as a vacation book but did not learn much from it beyond gossip.

Very revealing look at Georgia O'Keefe.......2000-07-16
A pretty substantial biography of artist Georgia O'Keefe. Covers her entire life and sheds enlightenment on all the factors that led to her hermitic life near Taos. While sympathetic to O'Keefe, this book does indulge in, or rather addresses, topics that O'Keefe would never discuss herself. Stories of her famous temper and lesbianism are shared with interviews from close friends. Parts of the book feel like a tell-all National Enquirer article, but the author does a good job of keeping it all in context, after all it must not have been easy for O'Keefe to become a celebrity symbol of feminism. Not sure how this book would compare to other O'Keefe bios as I haven't read any other ones, but this is a very enjoyable and informative book.

Book Description
1924. Autobiographical account of the American orator, lawyer, politician, and railroad president who was a Republican member of the state legislature and then secretary of state of New York. In 1866 he refused the ministry to Japan in favor of serving the railroad interests of Commodore Vanderbilt. He began his career with New York Central lines in the position of general counsel and eventually became chairman of the board. Noted as an after-dinner speaker, he used his oratorical abilities to deliver nominating speeches at the Republican conventions of 1888 and 1896. He was elected U.S. Senator but failed to secure reelection in 1910, partly because an investigation of life insurance companies revealed that he received an annual retainer from the Equitable Life Assurance Company.

As secretary of state it was my duty to have the papers all prepared for execution as soon as the college had voted, and to attach to them the great seal of the State, and then they were sent by special messenger to Washington to be delivered to the House of Representatives. Mr. Greeley, at the opening of the session, said to me: "Chauncey, as I am not very familiar with parliamentary law, I wish you would take a seat on the steps beside me here.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth reading.......2002-03-02
This 1924 book is not an autobiography. The author does not mention his first wife who died in 1893 at all and does not name his second wife, whom he married in 1900. I learned about his marriages from reading the article on him in the Encyclopedia
Americana, not from reading the book. DePew's fame came from his speeches and his political activity. In 1910 he published his addresses and orations in 8 volumes! The book is not modest about its author and sounds like one would expect a garrulous man in his eighties who is used to being deferred to would sound, telling what a great guy he is and what great people he has known (every President from Lincoln to Coolidge!). The book was written before Harding died and DePew says Harding is "developing the highest qualities of leadership." This quote illustrates a flaw in the book: he usually only tells us good things about people he knew, tho he must have known interesting unfavorable things about many of the people he talks about. All in all, I enjoyed reading this book by a man who was a household name in his lifetime but I suppose is unknown to most people today. I found the book in a college library. (I like college libraries--they don't weed out old books as public libraries too often do.)
This is a family book.......2000-07-13
My great uncle actually wrote this book. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in politics or American history. He rubbed shoulders with the wealthy vanderbilts, and made many government decisions. Truly an inside look at an influential person.
