Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-05-09
This is a really great book which at some points will make you cry. It really touches the lives of children with cancer in great detail and brutal truth. I love how Dr. Lazarus touched on how he often gets comments from people about how "They could never do that", and how it is a tad offensive to him. I understand completely. I enjoyed the miracles' section also.
Insightful!.......2000-04-08
I am the mother of two children with disabilities. I do not have a child with cancer. However, when I picked up the book "Conquering Kids Cancer", I could not put it down. This book is not just for a family going through cancer, it's for any family. Dr. Lazarus makes a good source of information for anyone interested in learning more about cancer including anyone in the medical field. His down to earth writing makes this book a must have. It made me laugh and cry but most of all it made me appreciate life to the fullest.
A nice commentary about dealing with cancer in children........1999-07-08
Dr. Lazarus gives a good commentary on how medicine is more than just administering RX to patients. It goes so much furthur than that. Dr. Lazarus shares some heartwarming stories about his road in the pediatric oncology world. It also reveals why a doctor would choose this specialization. I for one am glad he did.
Various stories of children with cancer........1999-07-07
A great compassionate doctor reveals how medicine should be practiced

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-07-08
This book has inspried me to go on and open my own fitness center. Written in text book style, it's easy to read and loaded with great, useful information that will make opening a center easier. In addition, it has practical information for the business to be finanacially successful and have longevity. I recommend this book for anyone who is thinking of this business opportunity.
The Business of Fitness.......2007-03-16
The book is insightful for those looking into getting into the fitness business. A good resource tool.
Its ok, his marketing ideas are fresh.......2006-09-11
I got this book thinking I would learn something new, my advice is this: If you have a strong base in Business Consulting, DONT BUY IT. If you have NO business savvy, then its for you. He really knows his stuff, but I was disappointed as I expected something else, and since I work for a business consulting firm, I was more than surprised to discover that its a BUSINESS CONSULTING BOOK. I had expected lists of gear to buy, places to call, etc.
I did find this book interesting in the respect that I already smoked his "industry standard" statistics, and liked his marketing ideas. I read it cover to cover. I dont suggest you follow his advice of opening a club in debt, and stay in debt. Its VERY easy to get and stay solvent. From the beginning.
He also gives you great numbers and referrals of agencies to call, for processing and such. However, with the advent of the Internet, I found even BETTER ones out there!!!
Invaluable Book.......2006-07-02
I have owned a gym for three years. This book has transformed the way I think about my business. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone except my immediate competition. :-)
Superb Advice and Detail!.......2005-01-18
I am starting a World Gym in New England. Although there were only 2 reviews for this book (very good reviews I might ad), they both hit home with me. One of which was the Drapers' comments. Their gyms have an excellent reputation and seeing them praise this book was enough for me (no, I have never met the Drapers and do not kow them). About me: I have a BS and an MBA (majoring in Entrepreneurship) from a top business school in MA. Therefore, I have a good knowledge base of finance, marketing, and more. I also have very good managerial skills from my profession as a Project Manager and beleive I have good common sense. I read this book cover to cover. I learned something on just about every page. This book will take you from setting up pre-opening sales to having very specific checks and balances after the business is open. In addition, this book provides a full drawn out plan for you. I cannot praise this book enough. Although I have not put the teachings of this book to use, I found all of the teachings VERY informative and VERY sensible! Buy this book if you're opening a gym or have had a gym for a number of years. Well worth the $!!!!!

Find out what you are buying!.......2006-03-19
"Cutting Up In The Kitchen" walks you through the dozens of names for the same cuts of meat that come from every cow. It is a guide for getting the best meat for the least money!
An indispensible book for the serious cook.......2004-04-11
I have owned this book for about 20 years and wouldn't do without it! Mr. Ellis presents superb descriptions of the cuts of meats, methods for boning, ways to ensure that one gets the tenderest slice of a specific cut based on anatomy and many hints about saving money. I showed it to my butcher, and he got one for himself. My daughter was just married, and I am now ordering her a copy. I can't say enough good about this book.
Mysteries of meat cuts revealed!.......2000-06-27
What part of the animal does the London Broil come from? Anyone who has been frustrated trying to decipher the marketing nomenclature of the meat industry will appreciate Merle's straightforward and frank explanations. Hailing from the U.S. heartland and practicing his trade in California, Merle shows himself to be a knowledgable butcher with a knack for writing in a conversational style. The writing is puncuated by clear line drawings of carcasses and cuts that aid the exposition, as well as other drawings that bring out the romance of meat. A few B/W photographs illustrate the difference between Prime and other US Grades of meat. I've looked for similar information in many other cookbooks without success. My only criticism is that the text does not refer directly to figures. Rather they are dropped on the page and one must guess which figure relates to what part of the text.

Book Description
From poodle skirts of the 1950s to baby doll dresses of the 1990s, the fabrics of our everyday lives are featured in this handy reference guide to the materials of the last half century.A companion to Dating Fabrics: A Color Guide 18001960, this source is ideal for those studying fashion and clothing trends from the late twentieth century, as well as collectors of recent quilts. Todays quilts may have elements of more than one decade because many quilters collect a great deal of fabric, and may draw from one group of fabric over a long period of time. The recent proliferation of reproduction fabrics has caused concern for the ability to differentiate the old from the new in reproduction quilts and repairs. An informative section on these fabrics from the 19802000 era provides a blueprint for building confident conclusions as to the fabrics origins. For ease in identification, prints are shown actual size and specific fabric lines and styles are grouped and sorted by date, then color. Dating divisions coincide with turning points in history which influenced attitudes and styles, and are highlighted by a brief history of each era.
Customer Reviews:
Dating Fabrics 1 and 2 (Trestain.......2007-01-10
These two books were purchased for donation to the local library in memory of deceased relatives of our local quilt guild. We were familiar with the books and felt the historical importance of the information would merit their addition to the library. They are spiral bound and beautifully illustrated. Persons trying to date and evaluate old quilts will find them very useful.
A must have reference.....again.......2005-11-05
Eileen Jahnke Trestain has done it again--this book is the followup to her 1800-1960 book and together they are the definitive guidebooks on dating fabrics from the last 200 years. This book picks up where the first one left off, bringing us from 1950 to the present with an equally well researched information in an easy to use book.
Her explanations are sufficiently detailed and useful. However, what makes Trestain's books the most valuable references I have are the PICTURES. The fabrics shown are in full color and full sized to the original fabric. She chooses popular prints which are very representative of the time period they come from. I see very few fabrics which seem out of place or miscatagorized. This book also includes global representative fabric swatches in the more modern fabrics. I found this very appropriate considering the world market is smaller than ever in history with the advent of the internet a huge variety of fabric from all over the world is now available at our fingertips.
Using both of her books in combination makes a quilt historian's determinations easier when trying to differentiate between fabrics in a mixed-era quilt that range from 30-40 years old to 70-80 years old. This book also helps identify the repro-reproductions from the original-repros--a difficult task depending on the clues available from other fabrics in the quilt.
In addition to the great pictures, this book is fabulous because it lays open flat so you don't have to juggle with it to keep your place in the book while examining and comparing with your actual quilt or fabric. It has a very good resource list with web site addresses including quilt societies, appraisers and museums, a full glossary of trade terms and a very comprehensive bibliography.
I can't imagine how I got by without Trestain's books. They are the visual bibles of quilt/fabric dating and identification. It deserves more than 5 stars---it is a gorgeous, useful, well researched, very organized fabric dating reference manual which is presented in a logical, user-friendly format.
Fabric origins, discussions of quilting and clothing trends.......2005-10-07
Fabric collectors as well as practicing quilters will surely relish Dating Fabrics 2: A Color Guide 1950-2000: for here are many keys to fabric origins, discussions of quilting and clothing trends, actual size prints to aid in accurate identification, grouped by date, color and style, and much more. Blending a history with photos which are easily compared to fabrics through lay-flat spiral binding and a hardcover edge for easy filing, Dating Fabrics 2 is the fabric collector's essential reference.

Of the 1.2 million people diagnosed with cancer each year, at least half seek out alternative and/or complementary care in addition to or in place of conventional treatments. As a result, health-care approaches ranging from traditional Chinese medicine to dietary regimens to the use of supplements such as shark cartilage and coenzyme Q10 are capturing the attention of the medical establishment and gaining momentum as viable--if not lifesaving--cancer-fighting strategies. On the forefront of this widening acceptance in the medical community is James S. Gordon, M.D., Georgetown University medical professor, director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., and creator of the Comprehensive Cancer Care conferences, which in recent years have provided an important forum for sharing and evaluating both conventional and alternative cancer research.
Comprehensive Cancer Care, which Gordon wrote with patient advocate and author Sharon Curtin, is an authoritative, eloquent guide to more experimental methodologies that have demonstrated improvements in quality of life and life expectancy, or in fact have reversed cancer's destructive trajectory, for patients with all stages of cancer. They address the efficacy of therapeutic diets, such as German physician Max Gerson's detoxifying routine and Michio Kushi's macrobiotic regimen; Houston doctor Stanislaw Burzynski's controversial treatment using antineoplastons, or short chains of amino acids; Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez's pancreatic enzyme therapy; mind-body techniques such as hypnosis, meditation, and self-expression; and the use of phytonutrients such as green tea, melatonin, and a mushroom called Maitake-D. Interspersed among the discussions of each approach are moving stories of patients who, dissatisfied with the standard, impersonal, and discomforting steps of surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, have come to Gordon's mind-body facility in search of other, more empowering techniques for combating the disease, often with amazing results.
Gordon believes that a seamless integration of the best of allopathic and alternative care is the future of effective health care. Indeed, many of the findings and anecdotes presented in this book lend credence to--and give hope for--that vision. Anyone struggling with cancer would do well to consider the information given here; while the sophistication and benefits of conventional medical care can hardly be disputed, the advantages of exploring one's choices in healing are profound. --Rebecca Wright
Book Description
This book represents truly pioneering work. It brings much needed information about the best of new cancer treatments to those who need it most and it does so with compassion and an inspired bedside manner." -Dean Ornish, M.D. Drawing on the studies and critiques of many of the world's most gifted researchers and clinicians, this book scientifically explores the most promising complementary and alternative therapies-and sifts through the often frustrating and confusing barrage of information and misinformation about them-to provide readers with the direction and help they need to create an individualized cancer-care strategy. Comprehensive Cancer Care includes reports on the most accepted and researched complementary and alternative practices, empowering advice for patients with clear action steps for speaking to doctors, and critical discussion of cutting-edge interventions.

Concerned Spouse.......2004-08-31
I purchased this book in conjunction with many others. It is an excellent overview of conventional and alternative medicene therapies. It was very helpful to me to better understand the non traditional options available for consideration for my wife. If I were selectng one book to thelp me a with a recent cancer diagnosis this would not be it, but it would be number two or three.
Another MUST read.......2001-04-29
Anyone who is interested in complementary medicine or natural medicines and cancer treatment should get John Boik's new book, Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy. John presents the scientific evidence for all natural compounds, gives excellent educational backgrounds on vitamins and natural compounds, and is unfailingly honest. His work is a superb reference guide, as well as clarifying what may or may not be helpful. I have no connectio n with him, other than his help in curing my best friend of Stage IV non small cell lung cancer. This is not "alternative" medicine fru-fru.
Comprehensive and balanced.......2000-08-07
Gordon's book is a very thorough study of the appropriate marriage between conventional cancer treatments and the miriad of alternative treatments. Through this book he acknowledges the pharmaceutical approaches yet offers explanations of alternative approaches that can be blended with them. He makes reference to many of the cutting edge therapies which include nutritional supplements. A source for such supplements which also offer corroborative documentation is iHerb. Of course they aren't as detailed as Gordon's book so owning this book is a must, but they do have a wide variety of products and follow up with exemplary service and quick response to any queries you might have. If you or a loved one has cancer, make a thorough study of Gordon's book.
Invaluable Summary of Cancer Treatment Alternatives.......2000-07-25
"Comprehensive Cancer Care" offers a superb overview of the many alternative and complimentary cancer treatment options currently available. Dr. James Gordon, who chairs a White House task force on alternative medicine, brings to the table many of today's top clinical researchers and practitioners to share their most recent studies and results. The book makes fascinating and informative reading for anyone struggling to better understand the competing claims made by different alternative cancer approaches, ranging from traditional Chinese medicine to recent research into enzyme treatments. Dr. Gordon has done all cancer patients a great service with this clear, level headed and much-needed book.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Great Joyce Notes.......2006-02-28
This book provides excellent and clear references to otherwise obscure persons, locales, Irish slang, and turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th) Dublin culture that are so integral to the Joyce stories. Well worth the purchase.
