Very Educational...........2005-05-24
My name is Il-Kyu Han and I am an AP English Literature teacher at a top preparatory school in Korea. As a major work for the study of postcolonial literature, I have had the kids read both the book and film versions of "The English Patient." This book is very helpful for teaching students the power of poetic license where true history is modified into a work of fiction. It was also a great opportunity for me to work on the ability of students to compare and contrast the characterization of the fictional Almasy to the real one. I strongly recommend this book as a cross-reference to Ondaatje's masterpiece.

Book Description
Dianne Forbis used to say jokingly that she married her husband John A. (Al) Forbis for his vocabulary. Al loved words. He used them well, and over the decades they spent together Dianne honed and expanded her own vocabulary. Al passed on his love of language to everyone he met, including his students at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID., where he taught interior design for 20 years. When the student evaluations would come back with comments such as, He uses words that are too big, Al would reply that he saw his job to develop more than just their design skills.
But little things began to go wrong. Al began to lose the details of his life - the record-keeping and detailed preparation and follow-through associated with teaching. He shifted to a less stressful job on the college campus. He began to phone Dianne several times daily to recheck his schedule. He forgot family members he has known well.
Then, Dianne watched helplessly as the devastating destruction of Al's mind finally eroded his ability to understand and use even simple terms of what had once been a grand and impressive vocabulary. The language loss was but one collapse as the disease dismantled learning, perception, personality and finally bodily functions.
With heartbreaking and evocative narrative and poetry, Dianne chronicles the maddening decline of her husband - and her reactions of despair, anger, sadness, resignation. At 121 pages, this book is a short read, but its exhausting and haunting journey will stay with you long after you put it down.

Very Revealing.......2001-01-22
"With Words that Once Were His" is more that just a look at what it would be like to live with Alzheimers. The candid narrative draws you in, and the abstract, emotional poetry lets you experience first-hand the heart and mind of the caregiver.
The author's poignant experience shakes the reader's soul.......2000-11-28
"With Words..." is a candid, eye-opening work which vividly portrays the pain and sorrow that family members experience when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. Journal entries illustrate the victim's bizarre decline, as well as a grieving wife's frustration, fear and loss.
An easy and emotional read, the author's poignant poetry punctuates reflective, harrowing, and even humorous moments as she watches the venomous disease slowly claim her husband.

One of the Best On Raw Foods.......2007-09-11
This book, along with the Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine book by Cousens, have become my bibles for raw food preparation. The best thing in the book is the smoothie. If you don't use any other recipe in the book, I would recommend you use this one. It has stopped me from craving unnatural foods, which is something I thought could never happen. This alone is worth the price of the book. In my opinion, the Rainbow Green book is better researched and more scientific, but still the Jubbs have done a great job in presenting a picture of why we need to eat raw and how to go about preparing the foods. I have doubts about the constant low temperatures they recommend for drying foods, and some of the recipes are very involved. Rainbow Green and the manufacturer for Excalibur both recommend at least starting with a higher temperature and then finishing with a lower one, and they say enzyme activity in the foods are not lost. I have tried both ways and am better satisfied with the higher temps first, both in texture of the foods and the reduced amount of time needed to prepare it. Still, I wouldn't be without this book. It's a treasure. The Judds are certainly to be commended for all their research and hard work in preparing this book.
A Wonderfully Educational Book.......2007-01-12
LifeFood Recipe Book gave a very well rounded and educational breakdown of raw food and its merits, and also of what is wrong with mass-produced food in the US today. Included are many great recipes for meals and snacks that follow this diet.
Comprehensive system of cleansing which includes many delicious recpies.......2005-12-23
This being one of the more niche books of the raw/living foods genre, it was not until I had been at least two years into it had I bothered to pick it up.
I was pleasently surprised when I leafed through this gem. The recipes in here are out of this world. There are many little tidbits of information which are thrown in just for your information.
So, the beginning of the book is a preperation for your kitchen, what to have in the way of equipment and condiments that are frequently used. When that is out of the way, they jump right into the principles of what Lifefood actually is and some more information on why to choose Lifefood.
The recipe portion is quite expansive and inventive. I applaude Annie for her intuitive recipes and the massive abundance of flavour they bring to every meal. By far my favorite recipes have to be the "Sweet Thai Tomato Soup", which by the way I recommend with extra cayenne pepper, and the Teriyaki Pate, which is just fantastic on some sheets of nori with extra greens and cucumber or rolled up in a collard leaf.
The desserts are out of this world. Recipes like the "Phat Black Sorbet", which consists of dark cherries and other delictables, are just incredible and really make this book stand out.
The Lifefood fasts they outline are good and provide a solid platform for anyone to begin their experiences of purging, cleansing and fasting with. They are nutritional fasts, meaning you dont go hungry but are still giving your digestive system a rest.
The Lifefood fasts typically consist of a two week protocol where you consume only liquids (blended soups, smoothies, juices, sorbets, liquid salads and Lifefood beverages like Electrolyte Lemonade) for a period of two weeks while you do a couple liver Flushes and a couple Gallbladder flushes.
My personal experience with the Gallbladder flushes in incredible. I am so glad that I have done them. My digestion has improved immensely and my metabolism has gone up. I have already done two and am going to start the third one soon.
The other major cleanse this book outlines is a parasite flush. This regimine is an easy one that almost everyone should consider and consult their alternative healthcare practitioner (like a Licensed Accupunctureist, a Naturopath or a Chiropractor) with. I highly suggest it and have noticed great improvement since starting it.
Overall I believe that Annie Padden Jubb and David Jubb have done a wonderful job on this book. Their knowledge of recipe synergy, knowledge of colloidal physiology and overall understanding of esoteric herbalism makes me give this book a five star rating.
If you wish to get all you can out of this book, make sure you pick up David Jubb's other books "Secrets to an Alkaline Body" and "Jubb's Cell Rejuvenation - Colloidal Biology: A Symbiosis".
This may be one of the most important books you add to your library when it comes to overall understanding of your recipe choices and your health.

Thought provoker and very practical.......2004-11-24
Having had oral surgery and not being able to eat solids,I came to this book looking for liquid diet suggestions. While the Salad section (and others) are of no use I found the soups and beverages recipes have a variety and originality that was most impressive and certainly perks a jaded appetite. Although the book is of limited use to me personally, what I have been able to obtain from it still makes the purchase well worthwhile. I recommend cancer patients using alternative therapies to aid their recovery, have a close look at this book. The LifeFood principle is a valid extension to alternative medicine. However it must be emphasised this is a recipe book, based on the Lifefood theory-(the theory of which is dealt with extensively in first few chapters)- it only refers to health benefits in a general way.)
Excellent resource.......2004-05-06
I own an earlier edition of this book and I have not seen the new one. The recipes I have made are delicious and well balanced. The life-food kitchen part of the book tells about the tools and essential ingredients you will need (juicer, blender, miso, unpasteurized soy sauce, unrefined oils, etc.)The information presented is remarkably informative but not organized in an intuitive manner. Nevertheless this book got me drinking alkalized water and doing a number of other offbeat things which have generally benefitted my health. The book makes many claims about what makes certain foods and practices (such as long, austere cleanses) beneficial yet has no bibliography, so all the information must be assumed to have come from the observations of the authors. I recommend anyone looking at making a radical dietary transformation read Paul Pitchford's "Healing With Whole Foods" before doing so.

Genius!.......2006-05-09
Clearly, this is a well-written book: The recipes are easy to follow, the book is well laid-out with just 1 recipe to a page, the recipe titles are descriptive, and I can't find a bad recipe! In fact, I've written to the author for her recommendations on a 12-step chocolatechipaholic program in my neighborhood!
Some of my family & friends' favorites are Port Tort, the Chocolate Chip Chai Cake, the Cowgirl Cookies, Jay's Addiction, and her Coconut Chip Sorbet.
Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy!.......2004-07-13
Julie Hasson's chocolate chip recipes are truly wonderful. Very easy-to-follow directions guide you to gloriously tasty results! I have not been disappointed in any of the recipes I've tried. On the contrary, once I've tried one, it becomes a "regular." Thanks, Julie!
The ultimate chocolate lover's book!!.......2003-09-07
If you are a chocolate lover like me, this is the book for you.
I picked up this book on a whim, having read several others of the same ilk. That said, let me report that this is NOT your ordinary dessert cookbook.
The recipes are well written, simple to follow, and best of all, the results are spectacular!...and isn't that what it's all about?
I'm not one to say this or that is the 'best', but I must say Ms. Hasson's cookies and other delights are the finest I have ever enjoyed....and my friends and family fully concur.
I can honestly say that if you enjoy baking and you are interested in going to the next level, purchase this book.
When it comes to chocolate chip cookies, etc., this is the new Holy Grail!!

Time for bed, Biscuit!
Biscuit is a little yellow puppy. And like most puppies, he would rather play than go to bed. Will Biscuit ever go to sleep? It's Biscuit's bedtime, but this lively little puppy doesn't want to go to sleep! Before he gets into bed, Biscuit plays out the familiar bedtime drama of wanting just one more thing. A perfect story for young readers who won't be able to resist reading about this adorable puppy for themselves.

Biscuit.......2006-06-12
Cute illustrations show Biscuit's young owner taking care of him as she tries to put him to bed. The text is simple and beginning readers will pick up the simple words easily, with the illustrations a big help when cues are needed.
A super bedtime book, especially for kids who have something in common with Biscuit - they want a drink, a snack, a hug, one more kiss... will they NEVER go to sleep?!? Of course they will, because just like Biscuit, sooner or later, they're just plain tired!
Biscuit.......2005-12-19
I can remember reading this book all the time when I was younger! I just loved it. It made me want a puppy that was just like the one in the story. Its a good book because the words in it are big and easy to read, and because it teaches responsibility because it shows the girl in the story feeding him and taking care of him.
I gave this book 5 stars.

A great first reader.......2005-08-26
My mother, a teacher, gave us some Bisquit books for our 4 year old son. He loved them so much, he has learned to read them in just a couple weeks.
The illustrations are as cute as can be.
The text ranges from simple to moderate for a first reader. I have found the balance between easy to read / appropriately repetitive text and few few places where the rules for sounds change a little to be just right. You can see where your child will try to apply a known rule (e.g., here vs. her) but will fail. You can explain the difference between the words and how to know proper pronunciation. After doing it a few times, he gets not just the words, but the rule. This, of course, requires the parent to be active while the child is reading.
The construction of the book provide plenty of reinforcement for the child and our son always wants to read more.
However, like all things, it is good to get other first readers as well. After a point, children will have memorized the text and will no longer be really 'reading' or stretching themselves.
We have some Bob the Builder, Toy Story, etc. books. However, Bisquit was unknown to us and is preferred by our son.
Biscuit Fan.......2005-08-18
Have always enjoyed Biscuit stories, this one is not a disappointment. The binding on the book itself is soft, the pages cannot be turned easily which is frustrating for toddlers.
This book is good both for beginning readers and toddlers........2005-04-04
Very simple, very repetitive (This is Biscuit. Biscuit is small. Biscuit is yellow. Every page includes the word Biscuit, so you either memorize the spelling or the meaning, or both). Perfect for kids in either age range. The only problem with the repetitiveness is that, well, it is repetitive. And without a rhyme or rhythm to hold you through, you might get bored reading it. So I wouldn't advise buying it unless you know you can sit through reading it again and again (or think your kid won't want to read it again and again, though that defeats the purpose of book buying)

Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2007-08-27
Great little book for those of us with lots of yarn and a reasonable skill with simple knitting stitches. I get bored with the same color anything after awhile, so this style of knitting is really great because you don't always know what is going to happen next. Patterns and instructions seem understandable, but you never know until you actually knit the garment. I'm starting one of the vests using my hand spun yarn, with some commercial yarn to tie it all together. It does encourage a knitter to think outside the box!
Dazzled by this book!.......2006-08-12
This is not just another knitting book - it opens up a wealth of creative possibilities. The basic instructions are clear, and I am sure that once these are mastered, the sky is the limit for aspiring knit designers. The colour photography is absolutely gorgeous, showing how all rules are made to be broken, both in colour placing and yarn types. I look forward to the arrival of my double pointed needles, so that I can wade into my yarn stash and commence the creation of some dazzling garments.
Love this book.......2006-05-25
I love every pattern in this book. The designs are unlike any other, very geometric and bold.
Dazzling knits--color duds.......2005-12-17
This is an exciting technique, and the book does provide knitting order and assembly instructions and drawings.
But the attitude towards color that is supposed to set you free from thinking about color intelligently is wrong. The samples in the book are all examples of bad color usage. Most of them look muddy because all colors are of medium value. some of the color changes obscure the design unit as in the tumbling blocks sample where you cannot see the design graphic from the bad color changes. The piece de resistance coat on the cover is really bad with a thin orange stripe that interrupts the flow of the eye and joins a turquoise thin stripe in the middle of the back with an uneven match.
The author can use a few color theory classes, and training in the use of dark medium and light values.
Edited to add after I made two vests:
I knitted the Ojo de Dios learning one, and the scalloped shell one.
I had to write out the instruction steps myself, because they are presented out of order, and you have to search for the next step. A sure way to make mistakes is to have steps out of order and jump back and forth before one memorizes the pattern.
In Ojo, she does not write the odd rows at all. This presents a problem because the color changes occur on the odd rows.
There are no total number of stitches per row after each decrease given. This is not a problem until you have to take out a few rows due to a mistake (what? you make no mistakes? then you don't have to worry about this) and try to figure out where you are without a total stitch count per row. And the underarm join as written leaves you with a join that is missing the dark colored outer rows. Changing directions to make the "eyes" symmetrical would work better if done in the middle of the back, and joined with two rows of garter stitch in the middle of the raw edges of the squares to make it symmetrical.
You have to be willing to work around instructional steps out of order and generalized information that applies to a group of different steps which you are supposed to remember by reading once in an overview to the steps.
And modular knitting is lots slower than straight knitting. So if you enjoy finishing and wearing projects, this will try your patience. I got down to 25 minutes a module but even then it takes forever to finish a little vest.
Dazzling Knits: Building Blocks to Creative Knitting.......2005-10-27
This book is a real inspiration to any knitter. Even a beginner could come to grips with the patterns it contains and, having done that, should then be inspired to go on and do their own thing. It is great and I'm very happy to have it.

Book Description
The painting and writing of Denton Welch, much admired by Edith Sitwell and William Burroughs, among others, is at once seemingly artless and immensely considered. There is really no one quite like him. Frail and sensitive, Welch died young at the age of thirty-three, leaving behind an intense body of work that had earned him widespread admiration both artistically and as a writer. James Methuen-Campbell provides a detailed analysis of his work and life, enhanced by interviews with those who knew Welch best.
