Florence Farmborough was a gutsy and intelligent English girl teaching a couple of aristocratic Russian gals how to speak English when WWI broke out. She loved Russia and, as England was a Russian ally, she applied herself to learning nurses' training and subsequently assisting doctors in attempting to save the lives of soldiers (from both sides) on the very front of the war action where under-trained Russians endlessly battled against their better-equipped Austrian and German counterparts.
The book, with its appurtenant excellent photos and maps, spun out of Farmborough's daily diary during her period all over the war front. She also spent furloughs in Moscow and in Kiev during the period, from whence she yields excellent information in regard to the ever-changing Russian political situation and the tenoned consequences of those events. The writing is excellent and precise, documenting both the progress of the war and the incredible level of misery and slaughter that transpired. This is not a "peephole" at the war -- Farmborough gives us the full perspective and I have to say, I've never read a more revealing account of WWI. Perhaps more importantly, she presents an accurate and comprehensible narrative of how the Russian Revolution by the Bolsheviks (Lenin) came about and she absolutely nails the "whys" of how the situation leapt, over a short period and in several steps, from a Tsarist dictatorship, to a short-lived democracy, to the ultimate brutal Bolshevik (Communist) regieme.
In the final chapter, Farmborough tells of her "escape" by rail, over thousands of excrutiating miles of Siberian tundra, along with her fellow countrymen and other refugees, from the iron grasp of the brutal Red Communist minions. She ends her tale at the port city of Vladivostok, at the far eastern edge of Russia.
Rarely have I read an historical account of any event or incident which was so revealing as is this fine work.
If you have the slightest interest in either Russian history and culture, or in World War One, do not bypass this incredible piece of historical documentation. This fine work reads as smoothly as a popular novel.

Ms. Farmborough's personal diaries (and the many photographs taken by herself and friends.) form the basis of this memoir. Which gives a riviting and often touchingly graphic portrail of life for this brittish born nurse and her colleagues in Russian Red Cross in the trenches on the Eastern Front in WWI and during the revolution the followed.

Laced with equal doses of drama, tragedy, and humor it is an emensly enjoyable book. And I recommend it to anyone looking for a good page turner. And it is a must read for everyone interested in Russian and/or WWI history.

Great Information.......2007-09-29

I had to have a cesarean for medical reasons but couldn't find any information about what happens and what to expect afterwards. All the pregnancy books only had maybe a page about c-sections and wasn't helpful at all. This was a great reference. It made the whole experience easier to deal with and gave me the knowledge I needed to feel comfortable.

Helped ease my fears!.......2007-07-28

This book has helped ease my fears about having a C-Section. I have marginal placenta previa and my Dr. recommended a C-Section. After believing all my life I'd have a natural delivery, this was disappointing. I am more comfortable now that I've read the book, because I know what to expect and what questions to ask. The book has the good exercise section at the end, which I haven't quite read through yet, but that many reviewers find helpful.

Informative and reassuring.......2006-09-20

This is a really good book with a lot of detailed information to help any women who are fixing to have a c-section or have had one. I had a difficult labor that ended in an unscheduled c-section and was very nervous about it. It read this book 5 months later and feel much better about the experience. Highly recommended!!

Helpful info for the 1st time C-Section mom.......2006-08-01

There were a lot of questions that I had once I found out that my son was breech and that I would have to have a c-section. This book was full of info and helped explain the entire process. The only thing it lacked was a bit more on the recovery side. I had a few questions about pain and a stitch that opened ...I had to call my Dr for some answers.

This book was very helpful to me when it came to emotional and physical recovery from a C-section. Most books are little short on the end of emotional recovery. This book is not home birth friendly though.

Julia at Her Best.......2005-09-14

Another wonderful cookbook from Julia Child. She invites Master Chefs to cook with her using their own wonderful recipes. I have been watching (and taping) her series on Public TV that goes along with this book. It's great to have the exact recipe and view it with Julia and the guest chef as they prepair these great foods.

FINE FARE FOR FOODIES.......2004-05-03

As if Julia Child, the pragmatic, industrious doyenne of the kitchen, weren't enough, she joined forces with 26 chefs who prepared dishes in her kitchen for her television series. She presents these plus many more recipes in this beautifully illustrated volume, which is a tribute to American cooking at its best.

Among the 150 prize recipes are a Mixed Game Grill with a tangy berry relish contributed by Michael Lomonaco, former Executive Chef at New York City's "21" Club. He suggests serving the game with home fries and a fresh green vegetable. Carol Field's Rustic Country Bread is a marvelous surprise with a slightly chewy texture and the actual taste of grain.

A personal favorite, Chef Joachim Splichal of the famed Los Angeles restaurant, Patina, and his French bistro, Pinot, offers an unparalleled Potato Lasagna - wafer thin slices of potato layered with sauteed mushrooms.

recipes that work.......2004-02-13

This is a wonderful book to use for special ocasions. It does not give you everyday meals but instead you find selected recipes that are surely going to turn out fantastic. The recipe for paella is not only authentic but quite easy, as well as the pan fried fish. Every single dessert I've tried was superb, the best apple pie, the best chocolate cake ever and the most beautiful mousse towers. I am not an experienced cook and this is the book I use when I have to cook for guests.

Great cookbook to keep on hand.......2001-10-19

This book is a must in any kitchen. It covers many of the basic recipies and even some of wonderful deserts that compliment any meal, such as Baking Powder Biscuits, Fried Chicken, Peach Tart, Buttermilk Fudge Cake, and so on. The lists of ingredients are the kind that you should be able to find just about anywhere. And yes, it does have recipies included that are more complex, and elaborate as well as variations for many of he recipes. She has included several sorbet, custards, herbed butters, to name a few.
She has very descriptive and precise with her directions to accomplish even the more complicated dishes that are included in this book.
It keeps with Julia's normal format of telling you exactly what equipment is needed to complete the dish, to wonderful photo's of almost each dish, without going overboard on the number of pictures.
I have found the tips that are included on so many of the subjects/recipes, quite helpful and informative.
The book also does not get overly wordy when she tells you about each of the cooks that are included in this book.
I have found this book a great asset to my kitchen, and it has taught me quite a bit.

Rapid changes in land use and occupational patterns of urban spaces in developing cities bring upfront the conflict between housing requirements and the preservation of green spaces. This paper examines this conflict in the case of Mumbai, where 50% of the population lives on 8% of the land while the city has very limited green spaces except for a large urban forest. In the 1990s, settlements grew within the forest and led one environmental association to file a public interest litigation in order to protect this natural habitat. The Court decided to relocate a number of inhabitants outside the main city while others had to be evicted. The analysis is carried out along two main lines. First, it focuses on the impact of urban governance disfunctioning on the peripheries of Indian cities. It demonstrates that peri-urban areas are used as a land reserve fund for relocation programs in order to relegate the poor outside the city central areas. Second, it explores the manner in which the relationships between the poor and the environment are framed on the conservative premises that poor encroachers were mostly responsible for the degradation of the park. Overall, the conflict underscores the constant vulnerability of the urban poor as well as their ability to challenge collectively unfavourable urban policies. New and apparently legitimate forms of urban governance, in our case the judiciary, maintain social prejudices and contribute to displace the poor to the periphery.

Have a hard time deciding what to say?.......2001-09-03

The first forty-three pages of Lunch Box Letters provide a guide and sample letters to help parents communicate with their children, "even grown children." The idea is simple, yet most of us do not think to add a quick "I love you" note that will be discovered later in the day, much to the delight of the recipient.

As the book says, "Written notes provide a complement to all the hugs and kisses your provide."

The next 75 pages are colorful papers with headers and graphics for writing the notes. These can be tucked inside a lunch box, briefcase, purse, or whatever. There are several birthday, Halloween, and Valentine pages for multiple recipients. As you tear out the pages the book will begin falling apart, but the confidence of the ones who get the notes will grow.

For the information, ideas, and colorful papers, this is well worth the cost. Who knows, it might just make your day as well. Five stars.

Precious and Inspiring!.......2001-04-01

What a wonderful idea! We are always rushing around in the morning and sometimes I never have the chance to say anything "meaningful" to my girls before they start their day. I purchased Lunch Box Letters at a school book fair and have been using them faithfully everyday.

In the preface the authors share why they write to their children, and they include sample letters, special hints and lots of colorful notepaper to give your creative juices a jolt. Each sheet has a headline at the top ("I'm Sorry", "Almost The Weekend", "Let's Have Fun", "Happy Birthday", "You're A Terrific Kid", "Miss You", etc.) and ample space for you to leave your own message. A fun riddle is also included at the bottom. There are also some blank lined sheets in the back of the book.

I was also pleased to read the number of ways the authors suggest you use letter writing to communicate with your children. A small handwritten note can really give kids a much needed emotional lift and ease pressures at school. They even include sample letters for specific (and delicate) situations such as dealing with a personal loss.

I definitely think this book is worth a buy. The advice and ideas you glean from the authors alone is worth the price, as is the gentle prompt it gives you to set a great example for your kids.

A friend of mine gave me a copy of this book for my birthday. I read the book and found it very touching, It inspired me to try writing lunch letters to my children. Well let me tell you, it's amazing..I feel that the kids and I have developed a new communication skill overnight. I highly recommend this book........It's FANTASTIC!

An Idea That Really Works.......2000-09-07

I bought this book to try out it's ideas with my 10 year old daughter. What a great book. It really brought us closer really quickly. I was able to write things down in the lunch box letters that I found hard to talk about...once they were writin we both found it much easier to talk about.

What a lovely idea for a book! At first glance, it's a sweet idea, offering tear-out pages with riddles and jokes, etc. for parents to use for writing sweet notes to their children. Closer inspection reveals a depth of feeling by the authors as each tells a personal story about the letters each has written to his/her child. I got misty-eyed as I read their stories, and immediately tore out one of the fun pages and wrote a note to my own little one!

My daughter especially loves getting emails from whichever parent isn't with her at the time. I'm going to share this book with her dad, who sometimes finds it hard to put his feelings into words.
