This is a very interesting primary source for people curious about the role New York City played in the Civil War. With interest in the rich military history of Governors Island on the rise, the fact that Edward Drummond was imprisoned in Castle Williams should hopefully draw readers to this book. The book is a testimony to the fact that POWs were treated in a reasonably humane manner early in the war when exchanges were still possible. The editor examines some of the theories about the crass attitude of the higher-ups which led to the development of what eventually amounted to death camps like Andersonville. The book also captures the brother vs. brother nature of the Civil War that accounts for much of the sentimental attachment to its study. The editor, curator of the Military History Institute at Carlisle, PA, knows how to tie primary sources together. This book is an example of why it's so important to preserve journals and correspondence that have historical value. It's to the credit of southerners that they have a tradition of this kind of preservation.

A non-fiction book that reads like good fiction.......2007-06-21
This is the story of the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793 that decimated Philadelphia. Most folks don't know much about this plague; I didn't til I had to research it for a class I'm taking (for a class I would teach).
This book, written for young adults, is captivating. The illustrations are relevant and extremely interesting; the text flows and is full of foreshadowing and detail that are the hallmarks of good writing. It's short enough to finish in a timely manner, and has all sorts of "excerpt" quality passages that one could read to students.
Although it would be best placed as a resource book in a classroom, I found it entirely readable as a book on its own. Though I got it for a class, it will stay on my shelf as a favorite. That's a rare accomplishment for non-fiction, in my world!

I found this book to be very informative. Although aimed at grades 6-10, it would be a great read for any age. There is much about epidemics and medical practices that is not included in the typical history of our country, but they are important to the complete historical picture. Mr. Murphy has done a great job in relating a story in such a compact way. The only fault I find is that he did not include who history gives the most credit to in eradicating yellow fever and malaria - William Crawford Gorgas. Overall, this book would be a great addition to a classroom.

From what I've read of the book, An American Plague by Jim Murphy I think this book is okay. I thought that all the pictures in the story were unnecessary. But I liked the information it gave, in most stories the author won't show every theory from scientists. If you are really interested in the yellow fever it is recommended that you buy this book.
Riveting and Terrifying History.......2005-07-01
This dramatic account of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 is riveting. It is packed with historical facts and presents the horror of the disease, the implications for the city of Philadelphia and neighboring areas, and the reaction of both the townspeople as well as those in power with vivid detail.
Politicians, the medical community, common people, orphans, the poor are all brought to life before our eyes and we feel their pain, we share their misery, and we gain insight into what life was like for them during this terrifying time.
Author Jim Murphy chronologically follows the beginning of this epidemic, making us feel as if we were actual witnesses to this American Plague, using quotes from those who were there, newspaper clippings, period engravings and portraits.
Additionally, we are shown true acts of courage and selfless behavior as Mr. Murphy tells us of great men and woman who risked their lives to help their fellow people, and some who ultimately sacrificed their lives. He also unravels the controversies, particularly among the medical community in regards to the reaction to the disease and discusses bloodletting, ingesting poisons, bathing in vinegar, purging air with gunpowder, inhaling black pepper as well as other practiced modes of treatment.
Some people may find the descriptions of the disease and the progression of the illness horrifying, but it is truth nonetheless, Yellow fever is nothing short of horrific. I believe this fascinating book is truly deserving of the many awards it has earned. This very visual and brilliantly written book is a great tool for you to use in teaching this part of our nation's history to your children.

This book is incredible. I'm sure many are agree with that. It shows master techniques for transferring a plain meet, fruits and vegetables to a beautiful decoration that guarantee to impress and add appetite for those who see it. The way I see it this book is for a pro and banquets. But for home cook like me, this book is hard and only 10% chance I'm gonna make it. It has to be learn by patient and diligent for a best result. But for those home cook who have Michael Angelo talent then this book is must have. The pages are full with colored photos. The guidelines are pretty complicated to follow, not very detail and you have to use your own imagination. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to make a different for their food appearance and of course anyone who love to make food as an art.

Although I'm not much of a fan of kidney or squid floral arrangements, the sheer beauty and creativity of this book gets one's own creative juices flowing. The specific tips are very helpful, and the results tremendous. Beginners may want this book to save for when they have gained precise knife skills, as the instructions are a bit cryptic. However, they may want to purchase it to save for when they are ready to tackle the incredible possibilities contained within. Professionals will be inspired by the photos. Beautiful work!
I did feel, however, that the section in the front of the book (all the dinners) was just a tease, and could be confusing to some with the way the garnishes were referred by page number for instructions. That space could have been used to present more garnishes!
Flowery garnishings.......2000-09-10
One of the first things I noticed about this book was an incredible array of edible flowers, made from vegetables and meats of all kinds. Also included are a stunning range of other garnishes, from a fried noodle basket to easily carved swans to The Good Luck Dragon and Two Butterflies. Not all of the dishes pictured have instructions, but those that do are easy to follow and produce beautiful results.

What a great book, even for someone who isn't a cat lover. I bought this for a friend but after flipping through it, ended up having to buy another so I could keep a copy. Martha Bayless has written what will surely be a classic in the field of kitty lit (not to be confused with kitty litter). I hope this is the first of many more amusing and, yes, practical books like this.

It is ok with lots of ideas but I found it very similar to her first book. Having said that it is good book for those just starting out.

This beautifully illustrated volume examines the garden as an enduring and evolving cultural resource, in two hundred works by more than one hundred artists. Prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings illuminate the changing aesthetics and uses of gardens from sixteenth-century Italian villas and Louis XIV's Versailles to such democratic urban parks as New York City's Central Park and San Francisco's Crissy Field, adapted from a former military base.
Artists' representations of gardens have been organized first to highlight design concepts and individual features, then to focus on historic gardens and parks, and finally to survey the activities within those settings. Among the earliest works included is an engraving of a drawing made in 1570 by Pieter Bruegel the Elder of a garden being vigorously cultivated by many workers. Two centuries later, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Jean-Honoré Fragonard represented the Villa d'Este at Tivoli in a state of neglected grandeur; Hubert Robert's painting of Méréville depicted a garden he helped design. By 1900 Eugène Atget's photographs of Versailles and Camille Pissarro's paintings of the Tuileries convey the enduring structure of French formal gardens. In contrast, American artists Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler depicted the pleasures of social activities in that setting. Photographs by Michael Kenna and Bruce Davidson offer contemporary perspectives on these issues.

I wish I'd had this book when my first two were born. When I was pregnant with the third I came across it and cried for having not known what kind of support I would need when the baby was born or how to ask for it. In America, we think a woman about to have a baby needs things - diapers, baby clothes, crib covers, and stuff. But what we really need is support and company and help with all the chores we shouldn't be doing during that first week of bonding, and recovering. After reading this book, when my best friend asked what I wanted for my babyshower, I replied "help" and we created a wish list of assistance during the first few weeks and people signed up to bring food, drive my oldest son to school, help with laundry, etc. It also has lots of good advice on post-partum birth control, recipes, exercises (with the baby), and around-the-world perspectives on the post-partum period. I am now ordering 3 copies to I can give one to each of my pregnant friends, along with "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth".

I read this book after my second daughter was born and it change my reality. When I had my first child my post-partum experience was terrible, I was a new mother and had no access to anyone who really cared or unerstood what I was going through. All the doctor's saw me as was a body. No room for my feelings or quesions about my new role, or knowledge of natural healing herbs or message was available to me. It was a shame, and I feel that many women unknowingly accept this fate.
After reading this book for my second post-partum experience, I was empowered by Lim's nourishing words and wisdom, to take care of the part of myself that was a mother, not just a body. My emotions, my diet, my relationship with my husband and other child, knowledge of helpful herbs, and ayurvedic massage all come togother in a way that wholistic and nourishing.
This book is an important book for this time, when women are now begining to comprehend their roles as mothers in a completely new way than ever before, Women are now allowed to be the beautiful and natural healers that we have always wanted to be. Not the usual "how to" book.......2003-04-11
If you're looking for mere facts & statistics, this may not be the book for you. But if you want a more "personal touch", and especially if you believe new mothers should be honored and pampered, get this book! What I love most about it is the absolute reverence the author shows for childbirth and mothering. Most other baby/mother care books may have helpful info, but read like the owner's manual you'd get with a new appliance or car. This one has useful information, but also emphasizes the emotional and spiritual aspects of having a baby. Even if you don't plan to use the Eastern-based references to diet, exercise, etc., reading about other cultures' approaches to birthing and mothering can be quite a valuable contrast to the Western (highly medicalized) perspective.

A friend who works at a groovy pharmacy gave me this book and I turned to it for help when I was struggling postpartum. Unfortunately, Robin only seems to address the health of women who are already perfectly healthy. If you're looking for advice on how overcome complications or illness postpartum, this book may not help. In fact, her assertions that the stomach will return to its normal size in 6 weeks, or that new moms don't get sick because of all the love they experience for their baby made me feel bad--and my sense of self is usually pretty robust.
