Book Description
The celebrated Laurens van der Post made a life of lies. Those who know him as the advisor of Prince Charles and Margaret Thatcher, author of twenty-three popular, award-winning books, (several of which were made into films) and a speaker for the cause of African peoples will be startled by the revelations in this fascinating biography of a consummate fabricator. Among the romantic highlights in van der Post’s version of his life were an Afrikaner childhood that featured a Bushman nursemaid, decorated military service, a brutal stretch as a POW in the Pacific, his devoted friendship with Carl Jung, and his sympathetic chronicles of the Kalahari Bushmen. Peeling away van der Post’s stories, J. D. F. Jones’s biography shows that most of his tales were tall—designed to dazzle an all-too-gullible world. In reality, van der Post had no Bushman nanny; his World War II military service, for which he abandoned his wife and children, was not particularly distinguished; and his relationship with Jung was tenuous at most. He also advised Britain’s elite, although his credentials were only a tissue of invention that he kept aloft until his death at age ninety in 1996. While disclosing van der Post’s many fictions, Jones never loses sight of his very real charisma and the widespread devotion he inspired. At once probing and unsparing, Teller of Many Tales is also a model of biographic balance and illumination. “...a fantasist, a liar, a serial adulterer... It was to this man that Lady Thatcher turned for advice... Devastating...”—Sunday Telegraph
Customer Reviews:
boring and strangely subjective tone.......2003-11-06
Frankly, the book is long, costs a lot, and is boring. I would rather spend $20 on learning about Africa than reading a biographer who keeps an odd tone through the book that I would associate more with a polemic than with a balanced biography. I think ok when Joe Campbell died how creepy people came out of the woodword who had been jealous of his fame, and said creepy envy-ridden things about him that some who had an ax to grind took up as fact. I think this author does the same. The minuntae in the book is deadening. This book is in that style, petty gossip that the author inflates into many pages to slap a high price on the volume. I would suspect this book would not have been published if it didn't play on so much gossip. I would reather reaad Van der Post's books firsthand and decide for myself
DISILLUSIONING, YET COMPASSIONATE!.......2003-09-02
This is how the book leaves one. As a lifelong admirer of van der Post (I was even fortunate enough to briefly meet him once in New York and attend his lectures on the denigration of the feminine since the time of St. Paul, as well as the Bushman of the Kalahari myths), I have to admit I found his personal life to be quite shocking, especially his treatment of women close to him, and even more so, his total neglect of his illegitimate children, and that of his own son, John, who died prematurely in adulthood.
I found the many lies surprising, but was relieved that not everything was a lie, and many of the the truths in his writing stand the test of veracity. Even if some of the Bushman myths which he claimed to have learned directly from them were myths that he read in the books of Bleek, they still are very beautiful. Most surprising is that the Mantis is not to be found in Bushman cosmology. Wherever did van der Post find this non-Bushman god whom he accredits to their culture?
Oh well, he seemed to have a capacity to attract great and life-long love from others which one wonders if he could ever have returned in such proportion. His relationship with Jung was not so close that he should have called himself "Jung's messenger boy."
Above all, I feel a deep sympathy for his extremely loyal wife, who was kept much in the dark about his goings on. Although she intuited there was another woman (though not that they had had a 30 years affair, or that there were many others as well), and knew of at least one of his illegitimate children, she said she was not jealous. If you read her autobiography, "The Way Things Happen," the last two chapters actually written by Laurens van der Post as she had fallen into her dementia by then), much is revealing. For instance, she notes that she was aware of her first husband's (Jimmy Young) affairs, and states in that book as well that she felt no jealousy, but believed that was in the area of his reckoning with himself and was his own business. Her book is a fine one, from her childhood in India, her great love of her second husband, her work as a playwright and then after six month's study at the Jungian Institute in Zurich, her work as a not fully trained psychoanalyst (she had some professional meetings with Prince Charles, while Diana, Princess of Wales, had several sessions with van der Post's close friend and analyst, Dr. Alan McGlashan), up to her old age.
Unlike van der Post, Jung was honest with his wife about Toni Wolff. They all learned to live with it. But then, he was not a habitual liar. Ingaret thought of her husband as "a great man." I beg to disagree. Though I respect him for staying with her during her last years when she had sunk into dementia, instead of 'ducking out,' as he had a tendency to quickly do in sticky situations.
Jung was perhaps a great man. In my opinion, van der Post excelled in his non-fiction works. I do not think he reached any great heights in his books of fiction. But over and above all his faults and problems, he gave us the African myths one way or the other. And this helped some of us with our lives.
More Tales?.......2003-08-03
I found this book difficult to put down. It is very well written and impressively researched. The light it throws onto the times, places and people spanned by the life of Laurens van der Post are valuable indeed. But it simply is not a do-it-justice, adequately balanced biography. Even if 80 percent of the prevarication, lying, [misunderstandings], and hypocricy claimed by Jones against Van der Post is true, it simply doesn't cut it for any serious biographer to essentially attribute the profound impact of such a high quality literary figure, and half-century-long luminary, almost entirely to some quality of "charm" or honed talent to [mislead]... even some of the most sophisticated human beings of his time. Jones, of course, may deny that characterization of his work, but such is clearly the underlying impact of his ill-balanced treatment of Van der Post's life. To put it another way: to basically attribute the remarkable insightfulness, giftedness and international impact of Laurens van der Post's long and illustrious life so largely to a sort of hypnotic deceptiveness (The rather glib, satirical - or is it sarcastic? - title of the book advertizes just such a seriously limiting thesis) comes close to producing a biography that borders on a species of shallowness, even if the author claims that he wrote the book largely to disclose these realities. Of course Laurens had serious flaws, and I sincerely thank Mr. Jones for opening my eyes more fully to that fact; but to make such faultiness, serious as some of it is, the unrelenting theme of an "authorized biography" (see Foreword) on the life of a man as complex and obviously outstanding as Van der Post, is not to write a biography fully worthy of the art and science of biography writing, at least as I and many others might understand it. There are literally miriads of places to which one could go in Jones' book that call for alternative conjectures about the "facts," true or not, that Jones cites; alternative, that is, to Jones'monotonously predictable conclusion, page after page, that Laurens was invariably the consummate international and personal con man. But the tasteless, anecdotal quip Janet Campbell, Laurens' housekeeper, claims to have made to a "very old" Van der Post, that is quoted in the first sentence of the Introduction to Jones' book is quite damningly pace-setting for the book as a whole: That Laurens should remember he was, after all "just a farm boy from the Karoo." Is that really all he was? It's no wonder such a characterization is said to have "incensed" him. Once the book is read, it is almost inescapable to conclude that this describes pretty much how Jones would like to reduce the life of Laurens van der Post. And if a reader accepts the clear implication of this kind of "logic" (a species of implied hubris expressed elsewhere in the book) there'd be a lot of people who'd have to be stricken from the rosters of the great among us: Abraham Lincoln (back woods, log cabin, and all), Jesus Christ ("Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?") and William Shakespeare (son of a merchant in a diminutive village). All in all, it seems to me that J.D.F. Jones' approach to the on-balance greatness of the life of Laurens van der Post, is archtypical of the malady crouching in the spirit of contemporary, civilized humanity (mine included!); the malady Laurens van der Post himself so insightfully exposed: that developed human beings today are so "civilized," so "objectivistic," so "rationalistic," so starry-eyed about the capacities of research that we are left virtually untrusting of, and therefore unmoved by our own intuitive, spiritual and "primitive" powers. We have therefore become largely incapable of perceiving, or have lost much of our capacity to experience anything except that which we are able to skeptically and even cynically squint at through eyes only part way open. This, I'm afraid, describes much of the reason for J.D.F. Jones' inadequate, or should I say, truncated but brilliantly elaborate biographical "tale" of the life of Sir Laurens van der Post.

Best book on the time management........2007-06-10
This is the best book I have read on the time management.
It covers not only the principles, but also the guidelines you can follow to improve your productivity.
I like to think of "earlier" as on time.......2007-01-05
Ever watch all your co-workers leaving on time while you stay and work into the night? Today, so many office workers are burning the late-night oil, especially office managers. Laura suggests, rightfully so, that this can be completely eliminated by staying focused on completing tasks during the day. Her tips for managing tasks and time are to the point, practical, and, most importantly, easy to remember and easy to implement. Laura has provided numerous articles for OfficeOurs magazine, all of which have been very popular with our office manager and office worker readers. There is good reason she is in such demand as a speaker and we are looking forward to her keynote presentation at our annual office manager conference and her future articles and books.
great productivity book.......2006-07-12
I found this book so useful, and it has certainly influenced my productivity. She had a lot of great, practical advice, written in an easy to use form. I would reccommend this book to anyone who needs to become more productive at work, and even at home. She has practical advice for home as well as work. It was worth my time to read this book (and I consider my time very valuable).
Leave the Office Earlier.......2005-10-14
I recommend this book for anyone who has lost the big picture of their life and where work fits into it. I have been very dissatified with work as of late. I feel like I work hard, I am there for long hours, but have not been as productive as others. Working through the exercises in the book has helped me more then I could have imagined! You have to do the work sheets. It is not a book to just skim through. As a result my goals are more streamline and priorites adjusted and as a result I get out of work earlier. I was spending time doings tasks that I felt were important but in reality were not. I just bought two more for my partners. Note I beleive this is very helpful for women, in particular, who spread themselves too thin and do too much multi-tasking. Women see all the little things at work that need done, do not necessarily delegate, and do those little things that others may not even notice. All of which in the end only waste time. I believe it is good for those work-a-holics who think they need to stay. On your death bed you will not say to yourself I should have spent more time at the office. Thank You. Nicole Bunch
Does this book come in a pill form?.......2005-03-16
All right - I need help. There, I've said it and I'm glad. Stack has worked in a corporate venue and, more importantly, is an entrepreneur running her own business which is what appealed to me. I don't have a whole bunch of people sitting around waiting to make me productive. Especially if you work on your own, you're going to find this book useful. Mind you, some of it doesn't apply to me (how to manage kids, etc.) since I'm long past that phase. But virtually everything else is on target with how I limit my own productivity. Her advice is 'street smart' and crystal clear - all I have to do is follow it. No guarantees there!

The key to successful vegetarian cooking is blending intriguing flavors and interesting textures with balanced nutrition. Don't worry about the absence of meat--you'll never miss it with these flavorful recipes. With over 20 cookbooks to her name, Martha Rose Shulman really does know the best vegetarian recipes. "A good recipe ... is one that both a beginner and a seasoned cook can follow with consistent results," says Shulman. "And those results must be enticing, pleasing to the palate, with familiar but evocative flavors."
An introduction to vegetarian cooking, instructions on how to follow a recipe, and a list for the well-stocked pantry lead into the chapters "Spreads, Dips, and Condiments," "Salads, Soups, Eggs, and Cheese," "Grains and Beans," "Pasta and Pizza," "Vegetable Side Dishes, "Stews, Stir-Fries, and Gratins," "Tofu," and "Desserts." Start with a Spicy Red Pepper Spread on crostini followed by an Arugula, Pear, and Walnut Salad. For the main dish, serve Farfalle with Asparagus or maybe Pizza with Summer Squash, Goat Cheese, and Herbs. Round out the meal with Citrus and Date Gratin or the light Lemon Sorbetto.
The recipes in The Best Vegetarian Recipes are clear and easy to follow, plus Shulman tells you how far in advance you can prepare them and how long they will keep in the fridge. She uses ingredients you probably already have in your pantry but maybe haven't tried together (Mashed Potatoes with Kale). Vegetarian or not, this would be a great addition to any cook's kitchen. --Dana Van Nest

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful recipe source for all occasions.......2005-09-28
I've owned a number of vegetarian books, and this is probably the most well written out of them. The organization is clean, the directions clear, and recipes delicious. I've made a few of her pies and salads, and all of them came out very well. Even though there are no photos in this book, in this case it's not a problem because she's pretty specific on what end product should look/taste like.
In terms of recipes, I find the egg/dairy, and the salad section, to be the strongest. The pies and frittatas are all delicious, and just the right amount of oil for modern taste. Ms. Schulman mentioned that she lived in France, and it is clear from her recipe selection that her cooking has been strongly influenced by French, followed by Italian, cuisine.
The only serious downside to this book is that there is a shortage of legume and bean main dishes. In fact, there's only really 2 or 3 of them, and one tofu dish, with different marinade suggestions. Also, if you are looking for Indian or Thai inspired vegetarian dishes, it's best to look elsewhere. However, I suspect the reason is that this is a "Best of" book, and Ms. Schulman's main strength does not lie in that area.
That being said, I still rate this a 5 because when I just have random vegetables lying in my fridge and I want to make a quick comforting dinner, nothing beats this book.
Doable, Reliable, Earthy but High Style.......2004-10-21
I own a number of Martha Rose Shulman's cookbooks and when THE BEST VEGETARIAN RECIPES arrived, I thought, uh oh, it's a greatest hits album. It's much better than that. True, earlier versions of several of the recipes appear in her other books but all are invested with a freshness here, with the latest wisdom in method and equipment. Shulman has a Mediterranean sensibility that lends itself to all the cuisines she draws from. The dishes are earthy yet sophisticated. I've made several of the recipes and they always turn out as intended. They are satisfying even for the roast beef eaters who have turned up at my table. This is a book for weeknight dinners and to cook out of when guests are expected.
Delicious recipes--and I'm not even a vegetarian!.......2001-12-05
Because I am a fan of Marth Rose Shulman's books, especially her classics Mediteranean Light, Feasts and Fetes, and Light Basics, I decided to try her new book. I have already cooked myself delicious meals and dazzled friends with her inventive recipes.
What is best in Shulman's books, besides the recipes of course, is her ability to describe what she is up to and to add interesting commentary. Her recipes are obviously carefully tested and, as a result, are almost foolproof. She is obviously someone who loves food and wants the rest of us to enjoy her healthy and delicious discoveries.
A real winner.
Good Basic Vegetarian Cookbook.......2001-09-15
Shulman has authored a number of cookbooks, and although she is a former vegetarian, she knows food and cooking and she is familiar with the goals and hopes of current day vegetarian cooks. Her latest volume represents a good overview of veg cuisine, apart from the absence of most meat substitutes likes seitan. The book contains a very good soup selection, with a variety of both simple and complex stocks upon which to build soups. There are numerous frittata recipes and good selections for winter and fall dishes, for those who want to eat seasonally. Yellow Squash and Rice Gratin and Potato and Chard Gratin stand out. Shulman presents a number of polentas. Of the vegetable dishes, Leeks in Wine is the most unique. She emphasizes freshness and flavor in each recipe. The book includes cooking tips for beginners and enough of her philosophy with food to make for interesting reading. For someone needing a basic cookbook, this would be a fine selection.

Customer Reviews:
Good as a supplemental book.......2005-02-22
Interesting book that has spreads from altered books by a number of different artists. Each example shows a different technique and tells you in a paragraph or so how the artist created that particular page and what they were trying to say through it. Its not a step by step book so its better to already be familiar with altered book techniques first but once you have the basics this will give some good examples and other ideas. (e.g. "to create a dreamy, wash-ed out effect, the artist primed the pages with gesso and then worked layer by layer with watercolor crayons.") There are other books that I'd buy first before this one (like Altered Book Workshop by Bev Brazelton) but this is a nice addition to the library too. I don't have an art background - I'm self-taught - and I kind-of feel like I have to read between the lines and experiment to get the effect that is desired. I think someone with a few art classes under their belt would get even more out of the descriptions that I do. Great book though, glad I have it.
my first altered book..........2004-09-29
i've browsed through the selection offered at bookstores and i must say this one blows me away totally so i had to buy it off the shelf and bring it home! this book doesn't necessary go through the steps of creating one, but by the detailed pictures and variety, plus a bit of your crafty imagination, we can achieve a lot more via our own creativity, using ideas from this fascinating book to create our own altered books. not to mention an AB idiot like me, the information it offers all the way from AB communities to materials is priceless. i can't wait for more from Holly. ^_^ keep 'em comin'!
Misleading blurb, but a beautiful book about artist's books.......2004-07-06
Only 4 stars because if you buy this book for what it's supposed to offer you'd be disappointed. This is not a book about the HOW to alter books.. but more of a journey at looking at other people who have.
* This book is a showcase of books.
* This book will not help someone who has never got into book-making before
* This will provide you with inspirations to do something, it doesn't treat you as a pre-schooler saying 'cut here.. paste this' etc. It is all about setting your own creative spirit free.
* Combine this book with a more basic 'how to' if you really need it, but for someone who is willing to experiment this book will get you going.
amazing inspiration for experienced artists.......2004-05-01
This book goes far beyond "eye candy". It's a visual delight with page after page of juicy and intriguing examples of book ideas and altered books. If you're a beginner, you may be frustrated by "how'd they DO that?" questions that could never be answered in just one book. Instead, the author has filled this book with vivid, rich and dazzlingly innovative examples of what you can do with an altered book. Intermediate and especially experienced paper artists will leap from one inspiring page to the next, saying, "Ooooh, what if I mixed this idea with that one and...," in lightning-fast brainstorming that this book can spark. I highly, highly recommend it if you want raw inspiration by artists with originality that soars. (Holly, we want MORE of this!)
Not what I expected.......2004-05-01
Although the talent of the artists who contributed to this book is without question, the book comes across more as a presentation of the artwork and artist, and less so as a teaching or how-to guide for us. I also thought the techniques used were a little out there and impractical, compared to the other altered book literature I have and have heard of.

This fascinating biography gives a fresh account of Holbein’s paintings, suggesting that they included coded signals and propaganda about political figures of the time. This controversial interpretation suggests that the artist was inextricably bound up in the stirring events of a turbulent age.
Customer Reviews:
READABLE, OPINIONATED, NEVER DULL.......1998-08-01
The author attempts interesting 'symbolic' interpretations of some of Holbeins' more famous works in the visual context of the time. For example, Anna of Cleves' asymmetrical dress trim says "No social graces", to the initiated. One wonders why the King didn't see this if it was indeed common to include visual puns in paintings? I took issue with the author's rather silly descriptions of 16th century religious books as 'best-sellers', as if there was some sort of survey going on at the time. Otherwise, this is a very worthwhile addition to any Holbein fan's collection. It's written intelligently and attempts to place the artist in the various towns and countries with reason. And it will make you look twice at ALL the details in all the versions of a Holbein painting!
