    Book Description

The basic mission of the Army during the Vietnam War was to find `em and fix `em and kill `em. By 1966, many units still had not formally established the recon unit that was necessary to fulfill the “find `em” part of the mission. The Cavalry could not be included in this group as it did not possess the Div level recon asset that was thought by some to be necessary. Under difficult conditions, an LRRP team had to be organized and its personnel trained to possess the skills necessary to survive in the enemy's backyard and return alive. This is the story of the creation of the 1st Cav Division LRRP, the training of its members, and the successful mounting of the first missions, which were required for the survival of this ground-breaking unit. This book is also a testament to men such as Ron Christopher, who had the perseverance, determination and the skills required to organize the LRRP, train its team members, and run those first missions that established the practicality of the 1st Cavalry Division LRRP.

They may be identical, but they're not interchangeable--that's just one of the many things twins want you to know. Understanding the developmental differences between twins and singletons--and indeed between twin siblings themselves--not only helps parents of multiples, it also helps teachers, coaches, and pediatricians become more sensitive in relating to these special duos, whose occurrence is on the rise. In Raising Twins, coauthors Eileen M. Pearlman, Ph.D. (herself an identical twin) and Jill Alison Ganon present a guidebook that studies the unique development of multiples from toddlerhood through young adulthood, paying close attention to the special challenges twins face. The first quarter of the book contrasts the cognitive, emotional, and physical development of multiples against that of singletons, touching on topics like speech, socializing, peer pressure, and the journey toward independence. Parental testimonials and an intriguing chapter about twin myths from around the world are followed by a hodgepodge chapter called "Getting Down to Business." Here the authors neatly explain the practical differences between handling twins and singletons, tossing in tips on safety, toilet habits, travel, and play dates. The authors' advice often comes straight from parents who've been there as well as the subjects themselves, who address topics like sharing, fighting, and jealousy, as well as the quite comical "Things that people shouldn't say or ask us." With its clear, intelligent content and bite-sized topic coverage, Raising Twins makes an excellent resource for any adult involved in this happy task. --Liane Thomas

2 out of 5 stars Not for parents of identicals.......2007-07-11

This isn't a bad book for parents of fraternal twins, but I found nothing in it that dealt with the issues that can arise with identical twins. I am still trying to find a book that deals more specifically with raising identicals.

5 out of 5 stars More than just parenting advice..........2006-11-20

With 4 year old twins that keep me on the run, I've read quite a few books looking for explanations and answers to uniquely twin issues. This is the first book I've found that actually discusses parenting issues unique to twins. Other books have been full of the same advice you'd get in any parenting book even though they market themselves as "twins" books. Don't buy this book looking for all the answers to your questions because you won't find those in any book, but it does give some good insight into issues that I'd never even thought of. I'll be able to plan for the situations which will inevitably arise with my girls now that I've read this book - rather than just getting confronted with them and having to make it up as I go. I'd highly recommend this book above all other "twins" parenting books I've read.

        2 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed........2005-01-19

It's not a BAD book by any means, but I found it had very little practical information. My mother-in-law keeps buying me twin books as I am expecting twins this spring, but none of them seem to offer any PRACTICAL information. It's great to explore the psychological ramifications of separate classrooms and/or dressing them alike, but can someone PLEASE tell me EXACTLY how to get them on the same sleeping schedule? What about disciplinary issues with twins vs. singletons as they get older? Why do some twins end up hating one another and others are bonded for life? (This book only interviews twins who seem to get along pretty well.) Overall, I don't think this book offers any new information. It basically tells you all sets of twins are unique and different and you have to find what works for your twins and your family. DUH! As I said... it's not a bad book and it offers some entertaining reading. The "Twin Talk" sections are actually pretty interesting and cute, but overall, I'm pretty disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars watching my girls grow up.......2002-08-01

I bought this book as a follow up to Ganon's TWINS! My daughters just had their first birthdays so we're jumping the gun a bit with "Raising Twins" but my wife and I are already getting answers to many of the things we've been wondering about - such as dressing the girls and handling their birthday parties and there is a lot of very good information about schooling and socializing for twins all the way through their teen years. The conversations with twins themselves from six year olds through twins in their teens and early twenties are fun and in some cases very touching. I recommend this book without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you for writing this book!.......2002-04-01

This is a book where the subject has been well researched and well written. I enjoyed it so much and was so encouraged about my ability to raise our twins. I loved the stories about other's experiences. All the stories and explanations of my little one's behavior makes it so much easier for us. Our twins are a joy, and Dr. Pearlman has helped me feel that it is not such a daunting task to raise them. Again, thank you!

Many years ago, my husband and I happened upon this wonderful little restaurant on a vacation in Vermont. I have since referred to their cookbook on many occasions. Some of my favorite recipes are the tomato quiche and the curried chicken and rice salad. This book is truly a little treasure.

I used to work as a waitress at the Bakery Lane Soup Bowl when I was in college. The soup and bread and desserts were great then. And with the help of this book you can keep these wonderfully homey dishes alive years after the restaurant has passed on!

I came by this cookbook by way of a patient giving it away because she no longer cooked. Since I am an avid cook I gladly accepted it. The recipes have an old East Coast flavor. My 2 favorite recipes are: Shaker Chicken and Noodle Soup and Fresh Apple cake with Caramel Frosting which I just finished icing today.

Visited this little restaurant in Middlebury, Vermont many times, many years ago. This cookbook captures the quality and creativity of the Soup Bowl's menu and has been a perennial in my kitchen for close to 25 years. Don't be disappointed by what seems like a small number of recipes, they are all terrific.

          4 out of 5 stars A good book for a novice cook.......1999-12-22

I bought this book about 20 years ago, and it has a 1970's appeal to it. The foods remind me of little restaurant you might stumble across and be delighted to find that they serve decent, wholesome food. I especially like the Cheddar Cheese Soup, and they offer some basic salad recipes that one can follow verbatim or use as a springboard for your own creations. This would make a good gift for a novice cook because it offers many familiar recipes that are easy to make.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-24

I have very little experience with color-patern designs and I belive this book is very well designed - it is easy to follow the instructions and even to try and customise some of the charts for different garments.

3 out of 5 stars Designs don't keep up with the instruction.......2007-03-21

I largely agree with the other reviewers' assessment of the technical info: It really is quite good. However, in this age of the Internet, most (perhaps all) of this instruction is available elsewhere for free, often accompanied with photos that are easier to follow than the black & white illustrations in the book. That these web-based resources often cite the book's material while essentially giving it away is, perhaps, a bit unfair, but such is the electronic world we're in.

As good as the technique description is, I can't say that I enjoyed most of the designs, which make up roughly 85% of the content. While I'd eagerly tackle Amy Swanson's Snow Sky pullover or Joyce Williams' Tradition Fair Isle Jumper, nearly everything else seemed to be stuck in the 80's. To be fair, some of that impression may come from what I found to be unattractive color choices, so more imaginative readers than I may be able to see past the photos and find a few more pleasing designs underneath. It's too bad that the publisher does not offer the Look Inside feature, which would allow you to make up your mind before buying.

If you can find this title used for $25 or so, I'd suggest buying it. Spend the extra money on yarn.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Inspirational Designs.......2007-01-04

This is one of my greatest knitting aquisitions of the past 5 years as a wonderfully inspirational resource for a beautiful array of colorful fair isle style sweaters and more. And just as her mother did before her, Meg has carried on the tradition of providing comprehensive, easy-to-understand patterns that challenge the more advanced knitter, but the clearly written instructions make it a perfect book for the intermediate knitter to take the next step. Additionally, the photography of the Wisconsin landscapes that surround the knitting camp were definitely a treat for the eyes. Thanks again for such a wonderful knitting resource!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Techniques Section Ever.......2005-03-01

As a knitter who loves fair isle and stranded knitting, I am delighted to see 38 intricately patterned garments, but wow oh wow! the techniques section is worth the price of the book all by itself. Years of tips from the Knitting Campers plus Swansen's expertise make the book technique-rich. If I was just starting out as a two-color knitter, I would need this book. As an experienced knitter, I'm delighted to have all things pertaining to fair isle and stranded knitting in one handy book. Some Starmore fans, like the two-star reviewer, who need to have their knitting patterns and color schemes completely dictated to them, may find the designs exhibit less color mastery than Starmore's designs. However, all other knitters may rejoice in a book of techniques and designs by knitters for knitters. If you want to learn two-color knitting, I highly recommend Sweaters from Camp. If you already know how, I bet you'll still find brilliant techniques that are new to you, and that you'll wonder how you ever did without. The techniques section really is that good!

5 out of 5 stars 38 Beautiful sweaters and a terrific technique section.......2002-11-08

People chuckle when I talk about going to knitting camp. These days there are camps all over the country but the original (and quite possibly the most widely attended) is the camp started by Elizabeth Zimmermann several decades ago. Her daughter, Meg Swansen, now runs the camp which actually takes place in a hotel in Marshfield, Wisconsin. It's a fabulous experience filled with beautiful yarn and loads of knitting wisdom.

"Sweaters from Camp" might be better titled "Sweaters from the Campers." A couple of years ago Meg challenged all current and former campers to design sweaters using the extensive colors (160 plus) of fingering weight shetland wool in a fair isle style format. Campers, some who are professional designers and some who had never designed a sweater, responded. This book is the stunning result.

So what might you want to know about the book if you can't look at it before buying? Ironically, my favorite part of the book isn't the sweater patterns. Rather it's the 27 pages at the start of the book. This section includes 7 pages on how to design a sweater - ribbing choices, armhole options, neck shaping, sleeves from the top or bottom, and borders. There's a handy table of suggested numbers for stitches based on size and guage. The second half of the introduction section is an awesome collection of tips on technique. When I attended camp, these tricks were the most valuable part of my experience. The book lays them out in great detail. Virtually every tip on using i-cord is offered. Other goodies include the "jogless jog", "spit splicing", "knitting back backwards", "circular knitting on 2 circular needles", five options on steeks, swatching options, and two color knitting with two hands. This section is worth the price of the book alone.

As for the sweaters, there are 13 vests - one childs, 2 mens, and ten for women. Most are button fronts with a v-neck. The next section, entitled "Small Things" includes two children's pullovers, tams for children and adults and a teddy bear outfit. We're then treated to ten pullovers - mostly unisex looks. The book concludes with a nice selection of cardigans.

The "look" of the book is primarily traditional fair isle. Most of the sweaters use several colors. My favorites are probably the less conventional sweaters. There are several that only use two colors in all-over patterns. There's also a terrific block effect fair isle in a child's sweater that will need translation into an adult look someday.

All told, it's a stunning book. The photography is plentiful and a visual treat. The print is large and the patterns are detailed (averaging over four pages per pattern). Even if I never knit one of the sweaters as written, "Sweaters from Camp" will be a steady source of both pratical and inspirational ideas.

I wholeheartedly agree that the BEST ever reference herein is tragically out of print. And it's not just any reference guide. Published in collaboration with The Royal Horticultural Society, it doesn't get any better than this. The book itself is a work of art with 2,048 color photo illustrations. When I needed to find out exactly what species of Lilac I had in my garden, this was the ONLY reference that gave me the correct information and how to care for it. A great buy and value in every possible way.

5 out of 5 stars Sorry to see that this book apparently is not in print..........2004-07-17

...because when a flower or plant absolutely stymies me, this is my first and best reference. The organization of photos (and the size and quality of the photos, themselves: six to a page in the paperback edition; these are not huge, but big enough to document the telling detail) together with brief, but sufficient alphabetical descriptions following the "color" dictionary invariably deliver enough information for me to seek out additional confirmation, if needed.

Invariably? Yes, indeed. I am no plantswoman, but have gardened in two wildly disparate regions and have visited many different gardens in the northern hemisphere. I read fairly widely, both older books and newer publications, but this is the book without which I would not be able to garden or to appreciate gardens.

5 out of 5 stars If I Could Do it Again.......2003-09-06

Teresa's book would have come in handy as we raised our teenage children. The book is a wealth of practical, tested, non-threatening, workable ideas that restore peace and harmony to a family. Parenting Without Pressure requires consistency and commitment but the outcome will be worth the effort. Children will learn responsibility and accountability and parents will learn what a blessing their children can be and that family is something to cherish and nurture. An excellent tool that provides help and hope.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver of a book.......2002-03-05

I am indebted to Teresa Langston for coming up with such a terrific approach to dealing with strong willed teens. I used this system with my two high school daughters. They did not like it at all at first and were always trying to figure out ways to beat the system - but they found out that violating boundaries had a consequence.
From the minute we started the system, I felt empowered as a parent. Finally we as parents had some guidelines for these turbulent teen times, real consequences and incentives for good behavior.
Now my teenagers are both in their twenties and contributing members of society. We are also best friends again. We look back on those days of struggling and we talk about those times as adults now. It's a bitter sweet memory. Life is good now. Thank you Teresa.

5 out of 5 stars Parenting Without Pressure.......2000-04-05

I highly recommend this book to anyone with teenagers or pre-teens. My husband and I have implemented the techniques in this book and have seen an improvement in the atmosphere in our home. The book teaches how to start letting go of our children and begin letting them make their own decisions so that they will be ready for the real world. It tells you how to let the natural consequences of their decisions teach them valuable lessons that they cannot argue with. Since beginning to use the suggestion of conducting a weekly family meeting, our household has become more peaceful and we are able to enjoy each other more and fight less. I have recommended this book to several friends and recommend it to you also.
