Over 7,000 Americans were captured during the three years of the Korean War. They wound up in 20 camps throughout North Korea with nearly 40 percent of them dying there. Some were murdered or starved, others died from poor medical treatment or from the severe cold. Despite brutal conditions, most of the POWs survived the isolation, cold, hunger and disease. Here are 16 personal accounts of men who fought the North Koreans and the Chinese and then faced life as a POW. They talk about the psychological effects, the living conditions, the medical situation, the day to day details, and liberation. These compelling stories paint a full picture of life as a prisoner of war in Korea.

Interesting Collection of Essays; Poor job by the Editor.......2002-08-21
There are parts of this book which are engaging reading, but for the most part it is a set of sterile-if painful-renditions of the lives of 16 POWs in North Korean prison camps from 1950 thru their release under operations Little and Big Switch. Mr. Spiller edited this book, leaving the personal accounts largely untouched. However, his editing leaves much to be desired. Consider Donald Elliot: he joined the Army on Nov. 25, 1950, but there are references to `his unit' being in action as early as August 19th, 1950 in Pusan. Even worse is Daniel Johnson's story. There are references to the Pusan Perimeter Battles...in February, 1951?? It is possible that Johnson might be confusing the several Chinese offensives of early 1951 with the steady attack by the NKPA the previous summer; but even so, for Spiller not to correct these misconceptions is ridiculous and detracts from the rest of the book. Spiller could also have more effectively and uniformly summarized the pre-war pre-enlistment experiences of his subjects.
There were three general phases to the POW experience for most of these men. The first was the `marching phase' when they walked-often barefoot and poorly clad in bitterly cold weather-from their point of capture to camps deep in NK, near the Yalu. The 2nd phase lasted until October 1951, when control of the camps was delegated largely to Chinese control. This 2nd phase resulted in enormous percentages (40%) of deaths from starvation, malnutrition and denial of medical care by pitiless NKPA guards. The Chinese, who took over for the 3rd phase in late 1951, were better; treatment of POWs improved, at least as much as the PLA's limited resources would allow.
I found meaningful commentary and analysis in all 16 of these interviews. Several men refer to night blindness among prisoners and guards, a consequence of few vegetables in their diet. Some of the men even used this to their advantage in the camps. Nor are all the renditions monotony about torture, lice, cold, and dysentery. Funchess and Osborne referred to pranks and crazy weeks in the camps; one commandant even offered a bag lunch and 2 hours head start to any POW who wanted to try and escape. Private Paul Smith escaped from his POW camp-then again, he had experience, having done the same from a German camp in WWII. Several men discussed marijuana use and abuse in the camps; the weed grew wild throughout North Korea, and the Turkish POWs noticed it first. Sometimes the Chinese would throw bags of the weed into the barracks and the men would roll it in newspapers. All of them referred to starvation, lack of medical treatment, and infectious diseases as the scourge of life in the camps, where 40% of prisoners died. There are numerous references to differences in treatment by Chinese vs. North Korean guards, the latter far more cruel. Chinese interrogators, Bill Gaddy says, `respected tough prisoners; they had no room for collaborators.'
The appropriately named Willfred Ruff taunted and slapped some of his guards and paid a high price; still, armchair flagwaving rightwingers (damn there are a lot of them in post 9-11 america) might want to look long and hard about how this man felt about one collaborator in particular.
Several of the interviews stand head and shoulders above the others. Ken Neville's story is by far the most cerebral and analytical account of his days in the camps. He has a precise account of his feelings, the games he played to try and deceive and appease his interrogators; and a lot of thoughtful reflection about how his POW experience affected his later life. Much the same can be said about Donald Slagle: readers of James Thompsons "True Colors" might enjoy Slagle's comments about the same camp V. Read about how he darned socks from a small blanket; used garlic to purge tapeworms (unlike the Turkish prisoners, who just pulled them out of their butt when they got long enough). A postscript to the Slagle story states that many POWs kept an oath of silence because collaboration investigations and trials. For more on this issue see Raymond Lech's "Broken Soldiers"
In general a worthwhile book to read. I hope a 2nd edition is released with the editing errors rectified.

Prostate Cancer Learning Tools.......2007-07-15
There are many treatment options open to the person diagnosed with prostate cancer. Of course, those available options are related to the specific qualities of the cancer. The person diagnosed with prostate cancer must have knowledge of these options, not only because that is the only way to understand what's going on, but more importantly, because he will ultimately be the one making the teatment option decision. The Sheldon Marks book discusses prostate cancer and the treatment options in a clear concise question / answer format. For myself, I relied on four sources to gather the information needed to make my own traetment option. Three of those sources were flesh and blood doctors. The fourth was this book.

Extremely thorough, easy to read.......2004-11-19
My wife and I found this book to be extremely user-friendly. My doctor suggested this book before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it helped us understand the entire diagnosis process. It is completely up-to-date, including nutritional discussions, and it was the best resource we found that discusses all of our treatment options objectively. It was by far the easiest to use and understand compared to some of the other books available--it wasn't preachy and it didn't talk down to the reader. This book has become a well-worn companion of ours and we highly recommend it to anyone that has questions or concerns about their prostate health in general.
Not my favorite on this topic.......2004-06-30
Contrary to other readers, I didn't appreciate this book quite as much as Prostrate Cancer for Dummies. Some of the advice was in conflict with other sources, and I was really concerned with the section that suggested it was kosher to return to the diagnosing urologist for the surgery. Skill and experience are critical for this surgery - I think you should find the best (and forget about professional courtesy). I also felt like the author tended to be arrogant with his opinions. Just my opinion, but I wish I had gotten Walsh's book which I've seen recommended on multiple support sites. I am very happy, though, with the Prostate Cancer for Dummies book which I found to be upbeat and easy to understand.

Of the five or so books I have read on prostate cancer, this has been the most useful. It not only covers the disease and the various treatments, it gives a lot of practical "what to expect" and "how to cope" advice.
It has the best drawings of the prostate and related organs that I have come across.

I found this book to be informative, written on a level that is easily understood by the lay person. Reading this book helped me to make decisions regarding my situation with confidence. my otherwise healthy 52 year old husband has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. no one knows the horrible shock and helpless feeling a person goes through in finding out he has this cancer until it happens to you. i read the entire book to him out loud on a road trip this weekend. actually, i skipped the parts that addressed bph and other things beside cancer that can happen to the prostate. also skipped the discussion of treatments other than removal of the prostate which is what he has decided to do. the format is so "user-friendly". it is filled with a wealth of information for whatever treatment the man decides upon. at one point, i ask my husband if he was tired of me reading and he said "no"....it really helped him a lot. this is a scary time for us both and the book gave us knowledge to use for fighting our fears.
A "Must Have" Working Guide for all men over 50!.......2001-01-12
This is a wonderful resource for all men aged 50 and over, whether or not you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is organized in a very logical format, from normal male anatomy and physiology to the problems men have which are "benign" and then goes into the entire work-up, diagnosis, treatment and survival options for men with prostate cancer. It has an unbelievable index and is filled with useful information for finding a physician that will listen to your needs and wishes. I especially liked the chapter on diet and nutrition. The entire book is easy to read and understand and is surprisingly positive and hopeful. I was fortunate to receive this book from my doctor, but I am buying and recommending them for everyone I know, now.
My Favorite Prostate Cancer Info Book.......2000-05-07
I was introduced to this book after I had had a radical psostatectomy and spent countless hours researcing the internet. I wish I could have read it early on in my diagnosis and treatment. The book is well organized, clearly written in terms that a layman can readily understand. The layout and chapter arrangement is logical and there is even an appendix listing useful internet web sites.

Poor quality!!!!.......2007-02-08
Do not buy this book!!! 10 minutes after I recieved the book, I decided to return it. The pictures of the sculpters are a poor quality, and some are not pictures at all, but are hand drawn illustraions (not good illustraions either). Even the sculptures themselves are tacky (littlerabbits with pink ears and so forth). Again...Please do not waste your money on this book.

After having read the previous review i made the gamble and bought the book. Please don't make the same mistake. The book laks proffessionalism, instructions and originality. The book is a lousy collection of pictures of low grade food carvings, and gives no or minimal instructions on how to recreate them. if it was not for all the hassle and costs involved this book would have been returned on the same day as received!
A book for all levels.......2002-10-27
I have been in the food service industry for 18 years, and am always looking for new ideas. A friend told me about this book a month ago and I've been having fun with it ever since. There are so many original designs and instructions on how to create them. And many are easy enough for my kids to do.

Good little booklet from past articles/projects of the Bead & Button magazine. This is off loom needle woven beadwork. All are do-able projects and contain no surprises. Very reasonable price!
Seed Bead Chains.......2006-08-19
This book helped me to learn spiral seed bead chains. Some of the directions were too basic for me and some of the directions weren't clear enough for me. The key word here is patience. If you have the patience to read and re-read and re-read again and again to figure things out, this might be an okay booklet for you. If not, you might want to seek out another book with clearer directions. Just my opinion. I am an intermediate beader so I am writing this to beginners who might buy this and be disappointed if they have to struggle to get a project complete. It's a good booklet for intermediate and advanced seedbead workers

I bought this book last Fall and made two different types of necklaces for Christmas gifts...everyone loved them! The patterns are easy to follow and fun to make. Worth the money!

Raising Black Children.......1999-12-14
I first read this book in 1992 when my daughter was 2 years old. I have found it to be a very useful tool in answering many of my questions with regards to the changes that she has gone through and the fears she may face as an eight year old. I also have an eleven year old son, who was having a problem controlling his anger. I referred to the book, and learned how to help my son understand the importance of controlled behavior, and alternative ways to express anger. I have also encouraged my son to read certain chapters in the book, to let him know that he is not alone in what he is feeling. I like the fact that this book deals with real life problems, and offers real solutions. My husband and I are parents who do not believe in spanking our children, it was a joy to read that the authors supported our views on the harms of spanking. I give away copies of this book to friends and famalies who ask me how we have been able to raise two, generous, kind and well behaved kids.

This book is actually a question and answer book. It has FAQ and the answers. I foud that many of the questions were right on time. I think I was expecting more of a narrative type of book, that is why I rated it 3 stars. Because I don't think it answered the most important question. How to raise Black Children.
