Excellent book, but somewhat biased.......2002-08-15
This is an excellent book that should be read by every person with any serious interest in the Civil War. It is generally clear and informative, frequently funny or witty, and generally well written. My only objection to it is the author's very heavy pro-Union bias. If you get this book, be sure and get a Southern account to balance it.
Book Description.......2001-02-06
One of the most famous regiments of the Civil War was the 20th Regiment of Maine Volunteers. Fromed in 1862, the regiment saw action in some of the fiercest campaigns and battles of the war; Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, Peebles Farm and Five Forks. It also was present at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Mine Run, North Anna, Bethesda Church, Gravelly Run and Appomattox, where it had the distinct honor of being of the regiments to formally receive the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Originally commanded by Colonel Adelbert Ames, leadership of the regiment soon fell upon the shoulders of the most famous civilian soldier of the war--Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. At Gettysburg, Chamberlain and the 20th Maine anchored the Union line on Little Round Top and helped to save the day, and the battle, for the Federal cause. The regiment fought with excellence in several later campaigns but will always be known for its brilliant and gallant performance at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. After the war only one veteran of the unit attempted to chronicle the exploits of the 20th Maine Infantry. In 1882, Reverend Theodore Gerrish published "Army Life". Although there are brief, scattered accounts written by other veterans of the unit's wartime exploits, this remains the only full-length book, purposely published by a 20th Maine veteran.

Book Description
Dr. Laura Nathanson wrote The Portable Pediatrician to help parents find the joy in parenting and gain the confidence to quickly and easily assess their child's development, medical symptoms, and behavioral problems. Parents can't always visit their pediatrician every time they have a question, but fortunately with this book they have the next best thing.
The Portable Pediatrician, one of the few child-care books written by a practicing pediatrician, offers authoritative and practical advice on:
- Keeping up with, or even one step ahead of, your child's rapidly changing needs
- Setting limits before the one year birthday
- Planning the arrival of the next baby in the family
- Coping with your own as well as with your child's separation anxiety
- Dealing with the four I's: illnesses, injuries, immunizations, and insurance coverage
- Getting prompt medical attention for serious crises -- and what to do in the meantime
- Preventing childhood obesity and eating disorders later
- Confronting complex behavior and medical problems, including ADD, autism, asthma, oppositional behavior (including potty resistance)
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable resource for parents, useful & practical advice.......2007-09-17
I have had the Portable Pediatrician for close to three years now, and have found it extremely practical and helpful in answering medical-related questions pertaining to my 2.5 year old daughter. Dr Laura Nathanson has organised the book into relevant chapters and categories, and the index is very handy in finding information quickly. The descriptions of symptoms, illnesses, and follow-up are relayed in an -easy-to-read format. Not only does this book cover illnesses and injuries, but also other pediatric concerns such as allergies, behavioral concerns, potty training, and even sibling rivalry. All in all, a handy, practical resource for parents of under-fives!
Excellent guide for children's health and discipline issues.......2007-04-28
We received this book as a gift upon the birth of our first child and it has been the most useful child reference book we own. It covers the most common illnesses in infants and toddlers in a very thorough fashion. Not only does it give reassuring advice about when a problem requires a visit to the doctor versus being something you can handle on your own, the advice on how to identify and treat minor illnesses (such as diaper rash) has been the best I've come across.
The book is also extremely useful in it's coverage of the behavioral issues that appear at different ages and in different challenging situations. It gave us a good idea of what to expect from our first child upon the arrival of a younger sibling and has offered excellent suggestions on dealing with discipline and oppositional defiance issues as we work our way through the terrible twos. Of course, there is no magic bullet to those sorts of problems, but the author engagingly outlines general strategies that have been extremely helpful.
I agree with a previous reviewer that the author does take a very traditional approach to the family bed (she's against it). However I hardly think that the author's traditional approach to childhood sleep habits is a reason to throw the baby out with the bath water, as it were. If you are planning to pursue an attachment parenting approach to child rearing and/or to have a family bed, this book isn't going to talk you out of it. If you are planning to pursue a more old-fashioned approach to childhood sleeping habits, then this book probably provides good advice (although I couldn't say from experience since we have happily gone the attachment parenting/family bed route). In either case, the medical and behavioral advice has been excellent. So I see no reason to get worked up about the advice on sleep habits if you don't happen to agree with it.
Overall, this is a very well-designed source of general medical and behavioral advice. Every new parent should have it on their shelf. Highly recommended.
Fabulous book!.......2007-04-11
I LOVE this book, and have referred to it time and again during my now 5-year old's life. It answers nearly every health-related question I've ever had (and there are many, for new parents), and is also very down-to-earth and witty. I just bought it as a baby shower gift for an expecting friend. Our pediatrician loves us because we don't call her constantly, and it's because of this book.
Helpful common sense.......2007-02-15
This is the best baby care book I've found. Full of common sense, not ideology. Very easy to read, but often gives more medical detail - and what you really want to know - better than other similar books. Plus she has a sense of humor about it all! We've given this as a shower gift several times now.
Extremely Helpful!.......2007-01-11
I love this book. It has answered so many of my "new mom" questions. I am currently using the potty training section and am having much success.

Book Description
The first volume in what will be an annual collection, Cornbread Nation gathers the best of recent Southern food writing. In fifty-one entries--original features and selections previously published in magazines and journals--contributors celebrate the people, places, traditions, and tastes of the American South.
In these pages, Nikki Giovanni expresses her admiration for the legendary Edna Lewis, James Villas remembers his friend Craig Claiborne, Rick Bragg thinks back on Thanksgivings at home, Robert Morgan describes the rituals of canning time, and Fred Chappell offers a contrarian's view of iced tea. "Collectively," writes John Egerton, these pieces "buttress our conviction that nothing else the South has to offer to the nation and the world--with the possible exception of its music--is more eternally satisfying, heartwarming, reconciling, and memorable than its food." With the publication of Cornbread Nation, we acknowledge with gratitude the abiding centrality of food in the ongoing life of the South.
Contributors include: Colman Andrews, Jim Auchmutey, Roy Blount Jr., Gene Bourg, Rick Bragg, Fred Chappell, Lolis Eric Elie, Damon Lee Fowler, Nikki Giovanni, Jessica Harris, Karen Hess, Jack Hitt, Ted & Matthew Lee, Ronni Lundy, Robert Morgan, James Villas, and Robb Walsh.

Delightful reading!!.......2003-02-08
I truly could not put this book down. My daughter gave this book to me for my birthday last fall. When I looked at the title, I was alittle skeptical. As soon as I started reading the book I was completely absorbed. If you want to know about Southern cooking or the Southern people this book is for you. What a fun book.

Ready to print dogwood and azeala fabric when they bloom.......2005-02-13
I bought this book because I wanted a closer look at "Stars of Africa." (A quilt made by printing digital photos and scanned natural objects on printable fabric.) But there is much more in this book. It opened my eyes to what a great quilting toy an all in one printer/scanner could be in quilt making. And I admit--within a week of purchasing this book--I ordered a HP all in one copier/scanner/printer/faxer--to replace my ailing printer which only did one trick before it began to fade and smear. :) It has not
yet arrived, but when it does--I'll try and write a review of it too. :) There is much information about how to treat fabric with bubble jet set--which is something that would be helpful to a graphic artist/quilter who may want to treat huge quantities of it at home instead of buying the already processed/printer ready sheets. I made a photo quilt several years ago and had to print to iron on paper that I applied to muslin--which is a pain in the brain--so I was particularly interested in a fabric sheet that allows your inkjet to print directly to the fabric. All of these new updates in the scan and print world are presented in a quick and easy format with handy color photos. I also like the compact size of this book, because I can keep it on my computer desk, or take it around my studio to consult when trying new methods for the first time.l
Directions in this book include how to scan three dimensional objects, piecing oversized images , using virtual applique to combine photos and copying photos to fabric.
Carol offers many troubleshooting tips, and offers practical advice right up front. For example, if you are scanning flowers and nuts to make fabric--she also tells you how to protect your scanner bed from scatching. If there is any stupid mistake that I'd likely make--Carol tries to steer me clear in advance. There is a short resource section at the end of the book and a table of
contents.
Tallahassee is a paradise in March and April with flowering trees and bushes everywhere. This year, I'm ready to scan crabapple, dogwood, azealias, wisteria--if it blooms--it'll be on the scanner. :)
A great beginning book.......2004-09-30
This is really a step by step book for quilters who don't know much about printing on fabric. I found that much of it was too elementary for me but I definitely learned some good tips and will be referring to it often. It is very clearly written and the explanatory pictures and illustrations are good. Also lots of good ideas for manipulating images.
ALL You Need To Know--In One Small Book.......2004-09-29
Finally! A guide to printing photos on fabric that recognizes that we want the photo image to survive laundering.
Clear directions, not confusing as I have found other instructions to be. I did not find myself, as I usually have, with unanswered questions once I'd read the book. The only proprietary products needed are Bubble Jet Set & Bubble Jet Rinse.
In addition, many interesting ideas for image manipulation, including ones that are so simple you could easily do them with a child. And, of course, pictures of some of Carol's quilts.
What's not to like?
The book is not large. About the only criticism I could offer is that it is not wide, binding to opening side, and that means it's not going to be at all similar in size to others on one's book shelf. However, it is of "normal" book height.

Customer Reviews:
A must read for Catholics.......2004-06-18
This is an outstanding book aimed at fathers like me that are Catholic and have embraced their faith but haven't fully realized the consequences if we neglect to pass our faith on to our children. One cannot read this book and not realize there is no greater obligation we have than to pass on our Catholic faith to our children. What could possibly be more urgent? Several times while reading this book I got that uncomfortable "hot under the collar" feeling because Mr. Wood is so effective at making one realize the things we are NOT doing as parents, and I'm a good parent!! I know Jim Burnham from when I used to live in New Mexico and he is a tremendous person and teaches Apologetics wonderfully. The lady who expressed concerns over Mr. Wood's thoughts on mutual subjection I think has either misunderstood the author's intent or focused on one thing that shouldn't lessen the message this book sends. I truly wish every father would read this book - there isn't time to lose.
Follow John Paul II instead!.......2004-04-06
I was horrified when a friend showed me this book's outrageous claim that Pope John Paul II neither teaches or endorses the mutual subjection of spouses. The book's claim is, of course, patently false.
The reasoning behind this false claim includes, among other things, an appeal to the writings of Wayne Grudem, a Protestant with a weak understanding of both scripture and linguistics whose works have been debunked time and again by better scholars.
What Pope John Paul II *actually* teaches about the mutual subjection of spouses may be found in his apostolic exhortation "On the Dignity and Vocation of Women" (Mulieris Dignitatem):
"The author [of Ephesians] knows that this way of speaking [in Ephesians 5:22-23], so profoundly rooted in the customs and religious tradition of the time, is to be understood and carried out in a new way: as a 'mutual subjection out of reverence for Christ' (cf. Eph 5:21).... However, whereas in the relationship between Christ and the Church the subjection is only on the part of the Church, in the relationship between husband and wife the 'subjection' is not one-sided but mutual.... the awareness that in marriage there is mutual 'subjection of the spouses out of reverence for Christ,' and not just that of the wife to the husband, must gradually establish itself in hearts, consciences, behavior and customs. This is a call which from that time onwards does not cease to challenge succeeding generations; it is a call which people have to accept ever anew. St. Paul not only wrote: 'In Christ Jesus...there is no more man or woman,' but also wrote: 'There is no more slave or freeman.' Yet how many generations were needed for such a principle to be realized in the history of humanity through the abolition of slavery! ....But the challenge presented by the 'ethos' of the Redemption is clear and definitive. All the reasons in favor of the 'subjection' of woman to man in marriage must be understood in the sense of a 'mutual subjection' of both 'out of reverence for Christ.'" (section 24)
How could Steve Wood so flagrantly deny a clear teaching of Pope John Paul II? The only possible explanation I can think of is that perhaps his conversion to Catholicism was not yet complete when he wrote this book. At any rate, Catholics should follow Pope John Paul II rather than Steve Wood. "Mutual subjection" of wife to husband AND husband to wife is the authentic Gospel ethos.
Excellent book for dads.......2004-03-10
This book is an excellent resource for fathers. The book describes how to follow St. Joseph, affirming Christ's lordship over our families, loving our wives, educating our children in the instruction of the lord, etc. Good resource for small mens discussion groups, too.
To Be Shared.......2003-06-27
Steve Wood's, "Christian Fatherhood" has had a continuing and growing influence on me. Having been married fourteen years, my wife and I have had our share of challenges. The wisdom and charity within this book has helped me be a more loving husband, a better father and has given me the confidence to teach my faith to my children.
Perfect for Fathers Everywhere.......2003-03-10
Steve Wood and James Burnham have hit the nail on the head. They have identified the critical areas where fathers become either successes or failures. If you're a young father and want to know how to be a great father - this is the book for you. If you're an old father - and want validation for what you did right and identification for where you went wrong - this is the book for you.
The critical areas they deal with involve devotion to God, to Church, and to family. They show how to love and be faithful to your wife. They show how to love your children, and it's spelled T-I-M-E. They show the necessity of rightly ordering family life so that it aims at more than this family's life.
Having observed both Mr. Wood and Mr. Burnham's families, I can say that they practice what they preach and their children (while giving the struggles to their parents that is ordinary) are happy, healthy, and holy. The happiness of their wives and the marvels that are their childrens are astoundingly powerful testimonies of the truth they speak in this book.

Book Description
Shakespeare’s career as actor and playwright reveals the extraordinary accommodation of his genius to the circumstances of his time. This unique account describes Shakespeare at work against a background of theatrical rivalry, opportunism, service to noble patrons, and political intrigue. Peter Thomson recreates Shakespeare’s writing career year by year, showing how the plays mirror their times. The story reveals the precarious nature of theatrical survival, the constant threat posed by the withdrawal of noble or royal patronage, the spread of disease, the anxieties of war and the climate of political uncertainty. This account of Elizabethan and Jacobean social and professional life offers a fascinating insight into the world in which Shakespeare produced his plays. There are numerous illustrations gleaned from museums, libraries and great houses to illustrate the theatrical and social context of Elizabethan and Jacobean England. Formerly published within the Cambridge Canto imprint, this new paperback edition restores the format and illustrations of the original hardback.
Customer Reviews:
Professional among professionals.......1999-12-02
We tend to think of Shakespeare as the finished product he is today, the plays we see on stage with their costumes and trappings and the world's best actors, or those aspirants in High School tripping over light cables behind the scenery. He had a beginning, though, and like everyone who survived to adulthood in his age, he worked for a living. Reading this book you can imagine him trotting on stage for his part in a play, getting called up during a rehearsal to recast some lines one of the other actors found uncongenial. Rather like Beetle in Stalky and Co., only more solid somehow. It is a splendid book and illustrates the man and his age with the effortlessness of good scholarship. It is too short, but for those who really want to know what things were like around Shakespeare in his own day, get this book. Imagine Shakespeare helping to lug the giant timbers of a large building across the frozen Thames to build the Globe. Back then as now, Theatre people did what had to be done for the show to go on.
