Grosseteste's On Light is a must read for anyone who wishes to consider himself educated. It ranks on the level of Aquinas' De Ente. I find it incomprehensible that Grosseteste has been shunned in the post Mediaeval world.

Fine introduction to Grosseteste.......2007-03-13

Robert Grosseteste was one of the most interesting philosopher-theologians writing towards the close of the golden age of Scholasticism. Like many Scholastics before him, this philosopher attempted to reconcile the truths of faith with those of reason.

This book highlights several aspects of Grosseteste's ideas, his career and life, and his theology.

Perhaps the most interesting and relevant idea of Grosseteste was his 'metaphysics of light.' Possibly influenced by earlier Christian thinkers such as Pseudo-Denys, Eriugena, and Maximus Confessor, Grosseteste regarded creation as a sort of 'light' through which God has shared his own inaccessible light, which is his transcendant being. Grosseteste, in some beautiful bible commentaries, remarks how light is the most noble of all created things because it is most like God, who is the metaphysical light of all things.

Grosseteste helped lay the foundations of modern science by actively exploring creation and sidelining the decaying structure of medieval scholasticism, and like some other thinkers, felt there was no division between the truths of faith and those to be found in the modern world.

Best Survey out there on Grosseteste!.......2006-08-04

Having read through Southern, McEvoy's other works and Ginther's most recent publication, all of which are truly splendid works of the academy, I must say that this is one of the most concise, yet detailed, presentation of Grosseteste's life and works. While not an academic presentation of primary sources, McEvoy does include some primary works in the appendix.

I have to say, the "Great Medieval Thinkers" series from Oxford has been one of the greatest series of medieval thinkers that I have seen in some time - I have not been disappointed yet. McEvoy's work on Grosseteste has been my favorite of the series so far in that it seems to be the most approachable while at the same time it remains appropriately scholarly.

This is a read for both the aspiring philosopher/theologian/medievalist as well as the trained academic!

A scholarly introduction to Grosseteste.......2004-04-09

McEvoy's volume on Grossesteste is a scholarly, thorough and balanced account of this great medieval thinker. If, like me, you are more interested in Grosseteste the philosopher and natural scientist you may find this book a little disapointing as its main focus seems to be on Grosseteste the ecclesiastic. It should not be forgotten, however, that this distant father of the scientific revolution was also the Bishop of Lincoln as well as a devout Christian scholar, and any book on this man that does not cover these aspects of his life thoroughly would unfairly misrepresent him. In general I found McEvoy's account of Grosseteste's life and thought to be a balanced and solid presentation of the life of this seminal thinker of the Middle Ages. I would recommend this book both to serious scholars and the interested "general reader."

Second only to survivors of war and victims of rape, women who are severely assaulted by their husbands or partners are the group of trauma victims most likely to suffer from the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Researchers estimate that as many as 80 percent of these women will manifest signs of the disorder in the months and years following an assault. Until now there has been no book specifically written to help these women deal with PTSD. This sensitive and compassionate book, at last, offers them hope.

The book opens with a description of PTSD and a self-diagnostic tool that helps readers figure out whether or not they are actually suffering from PTSD. Then, chapter-by-chapter, it delves into specific problems associated with the disorder. Worksheets reinforce the messages in the text. In addition to addressing the symptoms of PTSD, the book offers readers strategies they can employ when and if a confrontation with the abusive partner becomes necessary.

Battered Women Syndrome Primer for Poltical/Medical Funding?.......2007-04-01

This book is specifically designed as a workbook for those who have suffered from "Battered Women's Syndrome" and/or other aspects of "domestic violence". I find much irony in Dr. Kubany's advice that "one needs to be out of an abusive relationship, before using this workbook"! I do understand the book's assertions because half of the battle in fighting abuse is escaping from abusive people, but there are such rampant social abuses that this book fails to address as contributing factors!

The book seems to commercialize many aspects of "relationship abuse" that one might not be able to be aware of on their own if they are "stuck in an abusive relationship", and are unable to find a strategy to escape their predicament, yet that is the premise of the workbook, to be "out of the relationship" before using this workbook.

As my personal experience with abuse has been far more complex than anything found in this primer, I found some of the exercises to be mundane reviews of personal reflections of self-worth...not my primary concern. There are, however, some helpful examples of reflective thought processes that prove to be useful, but in a very basic way, and is especially aimed towards those with low self-esteem.

If you are looking for something that addresses complex issues of abuses of political, legal, financial and/or familial/parental type abuses, this book fails that agenda. As I had also spoken personally with Dr. Kubany in Honolulu where he holds his practice, he sure doesn't seem too interested or capable in addressing or helping with far more complex PTSD issues, and seems even less interested in obtaining potential clients! I was very disappointed in the book, but even more so with a lack of professional concern in regards to victims of abuse in general, other than marketing abuse ideology and this book!

This attitude is all too prevalent in the psychology/psychiatry and medical fields. No wonder there are so many injured people without help...many whom have turned to drug and/or alcohol abuses "to escape their horrible lives". Unless you are on drugs and/or alcohol, the system fails you terribly! (Must be a federal/state/county funding failure???)

I have done much research on Complex PTSD, especially in relation to major financial and social politics and crimes and am happy to say that there is an attempt at the field with far more accurate information and favorable resources than was available even four years ago when this book was published in 2004.

This book will NOT specifically address other types of trauma except for a basic self-questionnaire regarding basic "old school theories" of causes of PTSD in relation to "battered woman syndrome" and/or "domestic violence", as well as the newer political catchphrase of "anger management". In my opinion, the majority of these "old school theories" are extremely outdated and lacking in current relativity to the rampant and ingrained levels of abuses in MANY aspects of our society, not just in relationships, and this book fails to recognize these as contributing factors, especially within the medical/psychiatric industries! I feel that abusive relationships are more of a symptom of underlying contributing factors within our government, communities, schools, churches, professional work, etc...if not intertwined, and that "domestic violence" is only one example of how "violence" is ingrained in our abusive society. This book is seriously lacking in addressing these other contributing factors...

I find most theoretical aspects of abuse to be quite outdated in general, (or strategically omission based)although providing some basic awareness to potential causes of basic PTSD relative to unhealthy relationships and unhealthy attitudes in general.

I must add that the book's good points are in addressing the fact that it is a good workbook that will bring some self-awareness of one's own vulnerable and self-destructive habits and situations, especially in regards to personal relationships with self and others.

This book is great!! it has very cute ideas. I have a dog and she loves the squeeky sock!! i also have 3 cats and they love the ceramic bowls. The pet beds are very practical for on the go people. You can just pull of the cover if it gets dirty and wash it.Also my cats love the springy snake you can just launch it across the room and watch them go after it. I highly recommend this book!!!

The tittle says quick and easy. And they are. There are many motifs that can be used as decorations on clothing, or hanging from a tree. If you are pressed for time, and need a gift these patterns work up quickly. There is a good variety for the beginner and the experienced lace maker. I enjoyed doing the Christmas ordaments since I needed several in a short time. There is even a section for wedding lace and a garter pattern. This book is one of my favorites.

This is one of the best books I have on gardening with old roses, and I have many. It's small enough to carry around, has great pictures, but it's his information that is so wonderful. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in old roses, beginner or pro.

Gardening With Old Roses.......2001-06-28

I liked this book on the old roses because Mr. Scarman gives you such detailed information regarding their habits of growth, the type and shape of bush and how to keep it looking it's best. He gives a personality to the different classes of the old roses so you can understand how they want to grow, plus their likes and dislikes pertaining to soil, location and even watering. His chapter on the pruning of the old roses is the best I have ever read .The whole book is very informative. I would definately reccommend Gardening With Old Roses for those who are looking for that little bit of extra information on the older roses.

Beautiful book........2000-04-01

I have several old rose gardening books. This welcomed book is hard to put down. What I have found helpful is the section on care and pruning of old roses. In the past I've had to research several of my books to find out the information that is in this one consice and beautiful book.

Sabbath sucky Sabbath.......2007-06-14

This book is definitley not a must read. It talks mostly about the roadies and not the members of Black Sabbath. I would definitley pass on this one.

It's The Real Thing........2007-04-18

There seems to be quite a few publications around now relating to Black Sabbath in all their varying line-ups. I must admit I have not had chance to read them all. The main ones I have read are Gary Sharpe Young's 'Never Say Die' a fantastic account mainly of Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne had made his exit, also Martin Popoffs great 'Doom Let Loose' which is penned in Popoff's own inimitable style.

But as for "How Black Was Our Sabbath; An unauthorised view from the crew", this is clearly in a different dimension altogether from all the rest, and covers the one and only original band line-up.

Here we have a couple of old school roadies, obviously not too burned out as the excesses of the 1970's that have claimed many before them.
I found the book a real eye-opener and a real page turner, in style, content, and delivery.

The book somehow transports you back to the 1960's thru to 1970's and in the reading, you get to feel and taste the sense of adventure that the band as a whole were experiencing at the time.

From their early humble beginnings, through to their sell out stadium tours. The anecdotal evidence of just what it was like in the golden age of 'ROCK'; when the now superstar icons of today were just a wild bunch of young lads, with a burning ambition to succeed and play their way out of the mundane, and the shackles of poverty.

I most certainly recommend this book, as not only a history book to Black Sabbath, but also a history book on the development of the whole genre of 'Rock Music' as we have come to know it today.

Entertainment for Sabbath fans only.......2006-11-04

This is an entertaining book,but I would mainly recommend it for Black Sabbath fans only.As it states on the cover it is unauthorized.Although there are some good early photos of the band the text is made up of personal reminiscences and therefore is not very objective.All in all,it's a good book,but just don't purchase it for the teenage Ozzy fanatic.I happen to be a major Black Sabbath fanatic in my late thirties and the reason I got this was because I want all the information that I can get on the group.I love Black Sabbath in all its incarnations and am offended by those who say that the "Ozzy years" were the best.I'm really looking forward to seeing the Ronnie James Dio line-up on the road next year.'Nuff said.

Great eye witness account. .......2006-09-20

This book grabs you and won't let go. I never found it to be boring or slow at any point. A great read for any Black Sabbath fan unless you prefer the post Ozzy years. Are there really any of you out there?

Best book available on Black Sabbath.......2006-08-18

If you're a Black Sabbath fan, this is the book you need to read. It is filled with great anecdotes. Some are hilarious, some sad, some poignant. You get a real feel for the Sabs, what the times were like, their working relationship, and, to an extent, their personal lives, though sometimes the writers, out of respect for the band members, don't go there too deeply. We find out, for example, that Tony Iommi's personal life was made difficult because the burden of creating the music came to rest more and more on his shoulders, and he necessarily had to put in extraordinary time. But what also comes out is that these guys were a band of brothers. Everyone played an important role. Ozzy was the showman and, while all of the guys were cut-ups, Ozzy was the master. Geezer was the imagination. His lyrics made Sabbath Sabbath, and he was and is a tremendous musician. Bill was the heart of the group, with his drumbeat but especially because he was and is such a decent guy. He would frequently call on everyone involved with the band when they weren't touring just to check up on them to be sure all was well. Lots more. This is THE book for Sab fans. The couple of others I've read were poorly written and told you next to nothing about the band. This is a straightforward narrative. You'll laugh, feel a great fondness for the band, and wish you could be transported back in time to the early to mid 70s so that you could watch a Sabbath concert with a backstage pass and then party with the band afterward.
