Blackrobe in Blue: The Naval Chaplaincy of John P. Foley, S.J. 1942
Steve O'Brien Manufacturer: Writers Club Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0595226949 |
Book Description
This volume is a revealing inside account of a Jesuit priest from Boston who served as a naval chaplain in World War II. The author, an authority on both military and Roman Catholic history, conducted a series of frank interviews with Fr. John Foley in the last months of the priest's life. He also had total access to Foley's unexpurgated diary. The result is an encyclopedic history of the chaplaincy combined with the biography of an intellectual, courageous priest.Customer Reviews:
Scholarly and enjoyable!.......2002-07-28
The story of John P. Foley is not another WW II memoir written either too soon after the conflict to provide historical perspective, or long after relying on faded memories. Rather, it is predicated on a detailed war diary of a well-educated priest and Naval officer. The author uses the diary accompanied by interviews with the subject as a basis for the book. He has however, the academic background to relate the story in relevant historical terms and offers analysis in this regard. Dr. O'Brien manages the difficult task of balancing a scholarly endeavor with an enjoyable read.
This work is a history book more so than a religious one. It is about a very important part of naval life in a combat theatre. It is not a sugar-coated version. The author pulls no punches about the realities of life at the time, including serious conflict between the chaplain and senior officers.
It seems today that subjects with any sort of religious connotation are politically incorrect however, during the war religion had a significant influence. Any study of "the greatest generation" would be left wanting without an understanding of the historical and social impact men like Father Foley had on those who fought the war.

Reverence For The Relations Of Life: Re-imagining Pragmatism Via Josiah Royce's Interactions With Peirce, James, And Dewey
Frank M. Oppenheim Manufacturer: University of Notre Dame Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0268040192 |
Book Description
Josiah Royce and William James lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Irving Street, just two doors apart, and Charles Peirce grew up only blocks away. John Dewey was born and educated in nearby Vermont. These four great thinkers shared more than geographic space; they engaged in a series of formative philosophical discussions. By tracing the interactions of Royce (1855-1916) with James, Peirce, and Dewey, Oppenheim "re-imagines pragmatism" in a way that highlights the late Royce's role as mediator and favors the "seed-plant" image of O. W. Holmes, Jr., over the corridor image of Papini.Josiah Royce emphasized that communities of all sizesranging from families to townsneeded "reverence for the relations of life" not only to thrive but to survive. This theme permeates the dialectic of Royce's interactions with Peirce, James, and Dewey. Oppenheim analyzes the agreement and disagreement of these thinkers on the method and content of philosophy, skepticism and intelligibility, and nominalism and intentionality, as he uncovers their varied stances toward transcendent Reality.
Oppenheim repudiates Ralph Barton Perry's tactic of using Royce as a foil to display James positively, by offering a richer portrait of Royce. Oppenheim calls attention to Royce's "doctrine of two levels" and its effects on the distinction of human and super-human, by showing the contrast of Royce's "third attitude of will" against two primarily self-centered attitudes of will, and by examining the roles of Spirit, Community, and semiotic process in Royce's late thought.
Frank M. Oppenheim, who is widely regarded as an expert on Josiah Royce, brings more than 40 years of study to bear on this magnum opus. Reverence for the Relations of Life will be essential reading for those interested in American philosophy and theology.
"Climaxing his long, prolific career as the preeminent interpreter of Royce's philosophy, Frank M. Oppenheim has achieved what rightly is called his magnum opus. Reverence for the Relations of Life is a learned and lucid study of Royce, in relation to Peirce, James, and Dewey. Effectively refuting earlier interpreters, such as Ralph Barton Perry, who have marginalized Royce, Oppenheim places him at the center of thought in late-19th and early-20th century America. The book is meticulously researched and it sparkles with fresh insight." John Clendenning, California State University, Northridge
"Frank Oppenheim provides us with a rich, extraordinarily informed and judicious version of the kaleidoscopic relations undergone by C. S. Peirce, W. James, J. Royce, and J. Dewey. They represent one of the most creative clusters in the history of philosophy. Oppenheim refreshingly places Royce as the centerpiece, resulting in a work of impeccable scholarship and wisely tolerant intellectual biography." John J. McDermott, Texas A&M University

Book Description
Amino acids have arrived-big time. News about amino acids is even the stuff of headlines and best sellers. Research and clinical use are booming worldwide. Aminos are becoming part of everyday life-helping people sleep, feel better, and overcome anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. They are in dietary sweeteners. They are part of new anti-aging compounds. They are used in emergency rooms for treatment of medication overdose and liver detoxification. And they are now gaining repute in blood tests, as powerful indicators of mental and physical illnesses. The two dozen amino acids present in the human body are now being shown to be among the most potent healing substances ever discovered. These constituents of protein are necessary to everyday life processes, but research and clinical work in the last two decades have revealed a vast range of therapeutic functions for amino acids, including phenylalanine's pain-relieving powers, tyrosine's energizing ability and addiction-fighting potential, methionine's role in Parkinson's disease treatment and as an antiallergen, and homocysteine's emergence as a new and precise marker of heart disease risk. This update and revision of the landmark book on amino acids covers the exciting discoveries of the last decade and shows how to use them in your personal health-management program.Customer Reviews:

Naked Clay: Ceramics Without Glaze
Jane Perryman Manufacturer: University of Pennsylvania Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0812238486 |
Book Description
A growing number of ceramic artists now choose not to glaze their work. Instead, they use an unglazed--naked--surface to express their ideas and concerns. From slips and terra sigillata to burnishing, engobes, oxide washes and additions to the clay body, there is a wide range of techniques these artists can employ to achieve the finishes they desire. As these techniques are suitable for a broad spectrum of processes, subject matter and context (from slipcasting to handbuilding, from high to low firing temperatures, from figurative to conceptual, from domestic to public), the scope of the work produced by these artists is enormous. In Naked Clay Jane Perryman not only presents the finished ceramics and techniques of an international group of artists but she also investigates their ideas and areas of inspiration to further an understanding of their work. Each artist presented here has a unique style and way of working, but they are all connected through their committed relationship to the material and their desire to express their ideas using 'naked' clay.
This beautifully illustrated book will inform and inspire not only students, professionals, and teachers, it will fascinate collectors and, indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary ceramics.
