Book Description

When Robert Heatley began his journey through World War II in June 1942, he could not foresee at the time that his life would never be the same as it had been. But throughout his journey, from stateside training through Asiatic-Pacific combat, and ultimately Japanese occupation, he kept a journal of the events he experienced with the U.S. Army's 81st Infantry Division. Fifty-six years after the war and twelve years following Robert's death, the journal was discovered by his son and granddaughter. In the memory of his father, and in acknowledgment of the historic significance of the material, Lawrence Heatley then compiled, as a labor of love, the manuscript of his father's wartime story.

Breathes There A Soldier is a first person account of the war from the perspective of a combat infantryman. It is a time capsule of the experiences, both humorous and horrific, of an American soldier during the most profound and decisive period in human history.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute........2002-01-18

Breathes There a Soldier is a fitting tribute and in depth look at what our soldiers went through before during and after World War II. This is a story of teenagers and twenty somethings plucked from all walks of life and shipped to far flung military camps in the U.S. for extensive training and finally combat. The memoirs of Robert Heatley describe in detail what it was like to be transformed from a citizen to a soldier while retaining what aspects of civilian life that he could.

The story of the 81st Infantry Division is not unlike any other military unit in its preparation and ultimate departure for battle, but the grueling schedule of nearly two years of stateside training takes its toll as 45 members of the Division were killed before even seeing a shot in anger. Fed into a war planning pipeline the 81st "Wildcats" with a proud lineage back to World War I trained from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Arizona, California and Hawaii.

The memoirs show an unbending devotion to country, family and fellow soldiers, bonds that were surely tested by spending four years away from home and under very trying circumstances. During his combat duty in the Pacific while witnessing the horrors of war and fighting for his life and others, Robert Heatley learns over time that not only has his father passed away but his mother as well. Upon his return home after the occupation of Japan he learns that his childhood home and all possessions are gone, having been foreclosed upon by a bank.

We owe this man and others like him a debt of gratitude. Where would we be today if Robert Heatley and millions of others like him did not answer the call to duty. He offers four years of his life and endures relentless training and the hell of the Pacific in places such as Peleliu. This island battle has received little notoriety, but is referred to by experts as one of the worst battles in the Pacific campaign. Surviving this and several other invasions he comes home to nothing.

The book is an intimate look at the life and times of an American, combat infantryman, and devoted father. Nice job Larry and thank you for your service Robert Heatley.

Book Description

Alain Badiou is one of the most inventive and compelling philosophers working in France today-a thinker who, in these days of cynical resignation and academic specialization, is exceptional in every sense. Guided by disciplines ranging from mathematics to psychoanalysis, inspired as much by Plato and Cantor as by Mao and Mallarmé, Badiou's work renews, in the most varied and spectacular terms, a decidedly ancient understanding of philosophy-philosophy as a practice conditioned by truths, understood as militant processes of emancipation or transformation.

This book is the first comprehensive introduction to Badiou's thought to appear in any language. Assuming no prior knowledge of his work, it provides a thorough and searching overview of all the main components of his philosophy, from its decisive political orientation through its startling equation of ontology with mathematics to its resolute engagement with its principal competition (from Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Deleuze, among others). The book draws on all of Badiou's published work and a wide sampling of his unpublished work in progress, along with six years of correspondence with the author.

Peter Hallward pays careful attention to the aspect of Badiou's work most liable to intimidate readers in continental philosophy and critical theory: its crucial reliance on certain key developments in modern mathematics. Eschewing unnecessary technicalities, Hallward provides a highly readable discussion of each of the basic features of Badiou's ontology, as well as his more recent account of appearance and "being-there."

Without evading the difficulties, Peter Hallward demonstrates in detail and in depth why Badiou's ongoing philosophical project should be recognized as the most resourceful and inspiring of his generation.

Peter Hallward is lecturer in the French Department at King's College, London. His previous publications include Absolutely Postcolonial: Writing between the Singular and the Specific (2002) and a translation of Alain Badiou's Ethics: An Essay on the Understanding of Evil (2001).

5 out of 5 stars Very clear approach to Badiou's philosophy.......2006-05-01

I followed the author's advice, to start by the Appendix "On the development of transfinite set theory", which is the key to a real understanding of Hallward's book and Badiou's philosophy. Understanding the 25 page long appendix took me as much time as the reading of the rest of the 400 pages of the book... It is a very good outline of set theory as used by Badiou, but I found it hard to understand it without the equations, that I finally found in Wikipedia. The rest of the book is much easier to read. I followed some of Peter Hallward's leads, like to read Saramago's novel "All the Names" as way of understanding Badiou's theory of love as a category of truth and event.
All in all, Peter Hallward's book is an essential key and introduction to the next step: reading Alain Badiou's complex and exciting "Being and Event".

5 out of 5 stars Best available intro.......2004-01-25

Hands down the best and most comprehensive book on Badiou to date, and probably for sometime to come. Covers just about everything the guy has written, a fair bit of it unpublished. The emphasis is more on Badiou's `Being and Event' (1988) and subsequent work, so one weakness here is the relative lack of detailed attention paid to `Theory of the Subject' and Badiou's other early texts. The concluding stuff on `absolutism' is maybe a little OTT. But in general this is very solid work, and not many contemporary philosophers have been given such careful treatment so early in their reception. If you're curious about Badiou, or know something about him but are looking for some extra material, then this is an excellent place to start.

And unlike the previous reviewer, I thought the mathematical and contextual dimensions of the book were mostly helpful and about as thorough as is feasible, at least for non-specialist readers. Most of Rasheed Sabar's bizarre objections don't make any sense, or suggest that he hasn't actually read this book - for instance Hallward offers around a dozen obvious reasons why Badiou is opposed to Heidegger, and Badiou himself repeatedly affirms both formalism and realism/platonism without any contradiction or confusion, etc. If you want more info I found a much more informed & reliable review by Adrian Johnston, on the Metapsychology website (http://mentalhelp.net/books/books.php?type=de&id=1819).

3 out of 5 stars Decent by Default.......2003-12-21

Before briefly stating my opinions on the book, let me mention that amazon reviews, capped at 1,000 words, do not provide an optimal forum for in-depth reviews. My review has been criticized as "non-sensical" by the other reviewer on this site who posted from New York. Within the next several days I will put up a website which contains a much longer review of this book. Not only will I show that my claims are not non-sensical, I will also attempt to get it into the other reviewer's tiny mind just how the book fails. The author himself, upset at the amazon review, sent me a letter, to which I will respond in depth on the aforementioned website. If you are interested in understanding Badiou (indirectly) or how Hallward's book lacks significant philosophical worth, look for this upcoming website. For now:

Though indisputably erudite, Hallward's book is not only confusing but confused. The first four chapters seek to situate Badiou in the context of classical philosophy and current French thought, and to clarify the role of mathematics in Badiou's philosophy. The attempt to contextualize Badiou fails horribly. We find out, in particular, that Badiou aligns himself with Plato, Descartes, Sartre, etc; we find out that he rejects the linguistic turn. We find out that he is the "exact contrary" of Heidegger, but it is never explained how or why this is so. In other words, all we get is a cataloguing of Badiou's positions (as if he were a politician) without the argumentation that Badiou uses to ally himself with these positions. The majority of what we get by way of argument-reproduction is the trite phraseology that Badiou cares for strong subjectivity, clarity, universalism, etc. Ok. But why? And how does he defeat the linguistic turn? Why is thought before being?

The explanations clarifying Badiou's equating of mathematics and ontology fail abysmally through internal contradictions. The author fails at points to keep "pure being" and "what can be said of being" distinct; at one page he will call mathematics "true thought", and at another time he will say that it is valueless--it is the event which is true thought. We do not get a clear sense what the precise connection between mathematics and reality is for Badiou: at one point Hallward says that, for Badiou, mathematics as articulating Being implies that it is "prior to" the distinction between the actual and the potential; while at other moments he attempts to understand Badiou as a partial realist and partial formalist (these terms, or at least realism, presuppose the strong divide between reality and mathematics which Badiou seeks to overcome). It is of course possible to make arguments which resolve these tensions in Hallward's text. But the book makes the reader work too hard to thread something coherent from the mess that is presented.

It is only through attentive reading that these gaps and contradictions come out. A cursory reading will leave one very satisfied. But if you want to understand Badiou deeply, this book reads roughly. Unfortunately, there are few other books on the market which cover the range of Badiou that Hallward does. So i'd have to say that it is decent by default.

4 out of 5 stars Guidelines valuable to everybody.......2007-07-27

I found this book unexpectedly useful, complete and easy to read. It contains the kind of statistical knowledge that medical people do like to see. It is not another textbook that reviews medical statistics. However it provides the clues to understand and classify all these statistical jargon and processes that cause difficulties to eveybody that loves to handle statistics himself.I fully recommend it

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Reference for Preparing for Peer-Reviewed Manuscript Submissions.......2007-06-27

This is the best reference book I have found on the topic of how to present data for manuscripts to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals. It is easy to use, super easy to understand, and covers all elements of the manuscript preparation process as far as data representation is concerned. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a book on the subject. It includes many examples of data tables, figures, and even examples of how to write up titles and data descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful.......2007-02-11

The material is presented in a way that will help medical writers understand clinical trials more fully, and answer questions that come while writing.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners .......2005-09-30

I am glad to read this book before I prepared for my statistical clinical studies. This book could give you basic ideas, but you need to discuss with your collegues or use more advanced books to improve further.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding biostatistics without becoming a statistican.......2000-07-20

As a medical writer and editor at The Cleveland Clinic, Thomas A. Lang found that the lack of clear understanding of statistics by non-statisticians affected the clarity of their writing. Physicians had the same problem while writing up their research papers for publication. Lang perceived a need among medical and science writers to understand just enough of biostatistics to make them better writers and editors without becoming statisticians themselves. He devised workshops that were conducted by the American Medical Writers Association which were enormously successful. The logical next step was to write this book based on the valuable teaching experience and feedback he got at those courses. In other words, this is a book that wasn't written in a vacuum but is the result of a perceived need, and the author's experience in meeting that need. Co-author Michelle Secic has also contributed with her expertise, making it a valuable book for people in this field.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Talk About Good 2.......2007-01-15

This book, like it's younger brother TALK ABOUT GOOD is an excellent cookbook that is practical in every sense, not some idealized collection of rarely used concoctions.
This version has a short story before each section that tells about the culture that created the foods.
As with the 1st edition, and the IIIrd edition, the binding allows this book to remain open to the page being used, a requirement in the kitchen. Again, this is a USEFUL COOKBOOK, not a book that lives on the living room table.
If you liked the 1st book, get this one, and be prepared to get TALK ABOUT GOOD III, it is also a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sequel.......2000-12-09

This a the sequel to the first Talk About Good, but is good and complete enough to stand on its own. I recommend it highly as I do the first one. The artwork by Rodrigue is wonderful and the recipes are truly authentic. A necessary edition to any kitchen, Cajun or not.

5 out of 5 stars Aptly subtitled "A Toast to Cajun Food".......1999-01-03

This cookbook is an excellent source reflective of South Louisiana (i.e., "Cajun") culture. The recipes are interesting, easy to follow, and have been "tested" on family and friends of Junior League members.

As interesting as the recipes are the illustrations by internationally known painter George Rodrigue of Lafayette, Louisiana. His paintings and comments accurately portray the Cajun culture, and give an insight into the Cajun way of life. You will even learn the meaning of the expression, "Laissez les bons temps rouler".

If you want to know how to make a good gumbo, many delicious ways to cook seafood (after all, the Cajuns invented the idea of "blackened" fish), or what to do with some of the game that your mighty hunters have brought home, this is the cookbook for you!

            5 out of 5 stars Very interesting!.......2003-02-23

I don't have any mules, but I really wish I did. I love mules, horses, and donkeys. This book had very neat facts and storys about mules and the equine family. I especially liked the story about the endurance riding. I was amazed at how strong mules are and how long they can live. The 20 Mule Team Borax story was true! The book also tells you how to care for mules and how to choose your mule. It's a great book. Definitely read it!

            5 out of 5 stars Longear Rookie.......2002-02-21

My husband and I just purchased our first pair of mules. He has never ridden and I haven't ridden in 30 years and then only horses. After only having them for a few days, we both realized we were going to need some help understanding them. This book was most helpful and informative in a simple, down to earth manner. It was written in a way that the "rookie" mule owner could relate while still teaching the veteran owner.(I bought a copy for our friends from whom we had bought the mules and they loved it.) I'd definately recommend it as "required reading" for anyone contemplating teaming up with one of these wonderful animals.

5 out of 5 stars informative, easy to read.......2000-05-31

This is a good book, full of information and easy to read. A reader new to mules will find straight answers to basic questions along with background on our shared history with these animals. There is some discussion on the variety of ways the modern mule is used. There are excellent suggestions and specific points to consider when buying mules, including where to find them and how to look at the mules you find. There is information about properly fitting saddle, bridle and harness, as well as caring for the mule in general, including the potential relationships with other animals on your place. The latter part of the book deals with training, solving behavior problems, and understanding mule psychology, and some of the ways mules are different from horses to work with. These issues are covered in some detail. Although the book is not long, and the reader serious about mules will want additional resources, it is full of information in a broad range, with details and specifics to make it substantial. I like it because it satisfies my need now as a soon-to-be mule owner with horse experience, and it promises to be useful as a reference for years to come. I'm very glad to have it in my library.

                4 out of 5 stars Socks.......2006-02-25

Having taught myself to crochet I spent two months experimenting with making socks and landed up with a method that results in no seams or bumps and is reasonably soft. This book might have helped a little with the process but it is one of those books that lays out a pattern and off you go. Fancy patterns for sure and nice for the distaff side. I was hoping for something very plain with more attention given to custom fit and comfort. I stuck the book on the shelf perhaps I might give it a hook sometime in the future.

5 out of 5 stars if you love crochet _and_socks.......2005-06-23

You will love this book. THe instructions are clear and precise, the patterns are fun to look at (socks with toes!) and easy to do. I have made several pairs of these socks as gifts and they have always been well received. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to keep a pair I crochet for myself;)

Somebody brought up the problem of yarn, but I don't think this should be such a problem anymore. Many craft stores (A.C. Moore, Michaels*) sell sock yarn and you can also order it via the internet (Herschners**).

The patterns work up quickly and it's just so _neat_ to have a pair of handmade socks - or so the people that I have given them to tell me. I recommend this book highly.

                * No, I do not receive a kickback from these people.

**No, I don't receive a kickback from these people, either.

                5 out of 5 stars Can't stop crocheting..........2005-02-06

This book is a gem! I'm not an experienced crocheter, but I'm already working on my second pair of socks. The instructions are so clearly explained that even when I'm left handed I don't have any problems following the patterns. My first pair of socks fit me so well, and are so warm... it's a delight to wear them, especially in the Alaskan winter!
While it is true the yarns the authors recommend are difficult to find, I have used other brands with no ill results; the only thing I had to do was to adjust the gauge.
This book is an excellent buy. I highly recommend it.

Dr. Shamsuddin offers a very appropriate and understandable treatise of his many years of investigating the properties and effects of a simple yet important nutritional substance. Using well designed experiments he presents the significant effects of IP6 on cancer and other diseases. As a researcher and physician myself, I find his work and its presentation praiseworthy. I use IP6 in treating patients confidently due to the evidence he provides. Importantly his work is educational and lacking of any huckstering of "supplements" so prevalent in the media.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book.......2005-09-29

I'm amazed to see that the last review of this book was in 2000 - nearly five years ago! Yet the information in this booklet is mandatory for everyone - especially in this age of cancer run rampant. The author of this book is a pathologist who has spent years studying the causes and possible inhibitors of cancer, and his research is meticulous and very, very interesting. He has also managed to develop a test for colon cancer which I would imagine would alleviate the necessity for invasive diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopies - and apparently it will pick up the propensity for colo/rectal cancer long before a cancer actually develops.

Ip6 is a derivative of inositol which is part of the B complex of vitamins, and is found in a variety of foods. Dr Shamsuddin has performed many experiments using Ip6 supplementation with rats who have been injected with carcinogens. Though I don't agree with animal experimentation (even with rats), the evidence is indisputable that Ip6 is preventative and has a definite inhibitory effect even on advanced tumours.

Ip6 is also an effective chelator of minerals, and manages to bind to free floating iron - which is wonderful news for people with a high iron load - now recognised to be an important factor in the development of heart disease and cancer.

Read this book - if you are healthy, it may assist in keeping you that way. If not, it may help to turn things around for you.

5 out of 5 stars a must for cancer patients!.......2000-05-20

this brilliant researcher that dedicated his life to the research of the ip6 , is now getting a full acceptance to his natural anti cancer substance:the ip6.it was proved to be a anti-cancer substance against almost any kind of cancer, and it is in my opinion marching behind (but not far behind) the antioxidants vitamins:c\e\beta caroten\selenium\coq10\dr shamsudin explain and explored in detail the ip6 better than anybody, and also reveal the mechanisms of it and also in what kinds of foods you can find it,eventhough you will have to take an extra suplements.he shows scientific proves and graphs that showing beyond any reasonable doubt that this remarcable ip6 is a potent anti cancer agent. the book is very easy to understand, buy this book today.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing look at natural prevention & treatment of CANCER.......1998-06-27

This book gives hope to a society plagued by cancer. Dr. Shamsuddin has summarized nearly a decade and a half of research into one book, accompanied by one product. He confirms that nature has always had an anti-cancer agent and that agent has no side effects. He supplies the reader with studies and information that confirm his findings, and even mentions a product that has this wonder nutrient in it. I highly recommend this to those battling cancer and those wishing to protect themselves from it.

                        Book Description

Joyce Wieland triumphed over what she called "obscene poverty" to achieve international celebrity as a painter, collagist, quiltmaker, and filmmaker, celebrated as Canada's most important woman artist next to Emily Carr. Her art portrays strikingly Canadian themes of environmental issues, historical passages, and aboriginal rights in buoyant, satirical images. To make her distinctive, highly personal art, Wieland uses toys, paper cut-outs, wood, glass, and pieces of her panties and dresses just as boldly and felicitously as she uses oils, watercolors, and pencils. Some of her most famous works are quilts, such as Reason Over Passion and Confedspread. She made underground films long before Andy Warhol did, producing a total of 16. Joyce Wieland achieved acclaim through unstinting courage, vivacity, and her off-the-wall humor. She was known for tucking away her secrets in her work. Author Iris Nowell has uncovered some of these secrets through primary sources, such as Joyce's friends and family, and through her own perspective of having known Joyce for many years. This intimate, rollicking, poignant biography uncovers Joyce Wieland's life as she lived it, intimately and fully-through the 1950s "Dark Ages of Art" in Toronto, for much of the 1960s in New York's grungy artist's loft community and the underground film scene, and back to Toronto for the most productive, stunning years of her life.
