Passing Time: Memoir of a Vietnam Veteran Against the War
ASIN: 0870239554 |
Book Description
Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or, indeed, downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to fathom, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.
Emmanuel Levinas is one of the most influential ethicists of recent times. The importance and relevance of his work has been recognised and celebrated within philosophy, religion, sociology, political theory and other disciplines. His writing, however, undoubtedly presents the reader with a significant challenge. Often labyrinthine, paradoxical and opaque, Levinas' work seeks to articulate a complex ideology and some hard-to-grasp concepts.
Levinas: A Guide for the Perplexed is the ideal text for the student, teacher or lay reader who wants to develop a full and effective understanding of this major modern philosopher. Focused upon precisely why Levinas is a difficult subject for study, the text guides the reader through the core themes and concepts in his writing, providing a thorough overview of his work. Valuably, the book also emphasises Levinas's importance for contemporary ethical problems and thinking.

Concerned about the patterns of anxious behavior exhibited by your child? From simple, specific phobias to general anxiety, these problems can start early and cause tremendous stress for families. Your Anxious Child presents a thoroughly mapped-out program called COPE to deal effectively with anxiety when it starts. While this is a multistep program for fairly complicated mental health issues, information is presented simply, broken down into smaller steps and specific actions. (Plenty of real-life stories provide context, too.) The first step in the program is teaching kids methods of self-comfort, ranging from meditation and prayer to easy breathing exercises and biofeedback. The second is developing plans to relieve anxiety, focusing on improved communication and problem-solving skills. Since each plan will need to be as unique as your child, only a few concrete examples are given; but the directions for creating individualized plans are straightforward. The third step could be the most important: persist! Anxiety problems aren't solved overnight. Lastly, evaluate the program's success. What can be changed to increase effectiveness? This book's clear-cut approach can help parents and children wade through the difficulties of anxious behavior to get positive and long-lasting results. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Ideas and Information.......2005-05-17
I was reading this book at the same time as "Helping Your Anxious Child" by Sue Spence, Vanessa Cobham, Ann Wignall, and Ronald Rapee.
I quickly found myself preferring "Helping Your Anxious Child" to this one though this certainly had a lot of good information.
While this book certainly gave me a lot of insights into the nature of anxiety it seemed that some of the techniques would be much harder to implement than the approach of the other book.
Regarding relaxation techniques. This is approached in both books, but the best resource I have found for helping a young child learn relaxation techniques are the wonderful CD's by Lori Lite.
Her CD's "Indigo Dreams", "Indigo Ocean Dreams" and "Indigo Teen Dreams" are produced specifically with young children as well as teenagers in mind. They are guided meditations, affirmations, relaxation and visualization techniques that are truly suitable for kids and if you are in the same room as your kids you will benefit as well.
While the concepts contained in the above book are certainly excellent, these CD's by Ms. Lite make it considerably easier for children to relate to.
Plus they can be used to help your child sleep more soundly and can help them relax if they have bad dreams. They have very relaxing, healing music and wonderful narration that helps these wonderful stories gently lead children to a more peaceful state of mind and overall being.
Of course the material in this and the other book I mentioned are very important for dealing with the broad scope of anxiety and for knowing what tools may help. The CD's have provided an excellent and immediate safe haven for my own child as we work together on tackling the roots of her anxiety.
In fact my child was having some anxiety before school today and my wife drew a little picture of a spider and web (to represent Lori Lite's "affirmation web" which she learned from the CDs) and it helped my daughter to go to school and have a reminder throughout the day if ever she felt anxiety starting up.
Hard for the non-psychology expert to understand........2001-11-30
I found the advice impractical in the home setting. I would not recommend this book for parents or teachers. Perhaps those in the clinical setting would find it helpful.
A Must Read.......2000-04-03
For parents and concerned friends and relatives of anxious children, Dr. Dacey and Dr. Fiore have co-authored the definitive guide for dealing with anxious children. As a parent, and now a grandparent, I highly recommend this informative, reassuring and inspiring book.
A Wonderful Resource.......2000-03-18
This text finally provides tools and strategies that I can, as a parent, become an expert at using. I just wish the publisher would print more of them at a quicker pace so that my friends could pick up copies. Great book! -ms
An Excellent Guide.......2000-03-01
Although there are many texts which address anxiety in children, I found this book to be far and away the best available. Dr. Dacey and Dr. Fiore provide an excellent framework for parents who want to help their children. It can be difficult for parents to deal with these complicated issues, but Fiore and Dacey make everything clear and to the point. With a Masters Degree in Public Health I have reviewed several modalities of care for anxious children. This one is simply the best. I highly recommend this book to all parents, especially those with anxious children.
Book Description
In her first cookbook, chef and restaurateur Donna Nordin brings together 85 recipes for the food that has earned her national acclaim and repeatedly landed Café Terra Cotta on lists of America's best restaurants. Donna's passion for spice has long been the guiding principle of her restaurant, and her flavorful, innovative contemporary southwestern cooking has kept diners coming back again and again. While all her dishes dazzle the palate, a subtle Garlic Custard and smooth Avocado Vichyssoise are as much a part of her repertoire as the fiery punch of Fried Jalapeño Ravioli. Donna's signature style carries over into the dessert course with a tequila-laced chocolate Arizona Princess Cake, just one of her many sophisticated studies in flavor. Share these recipes with your family and friends and you'll understand why Donna is one of the country's foremost cooking teachers, as well as one of its most respected chefs.
Customer Reviews:
Delicious straightforward southwest cooking.......2007-08-13
I visited Cafe Terra Cotta in Tucson a year ago and was amazed by the most delicious chile rellenos I had ever tasted. On my second visit, I ordered the chile rellenos again, and picked up the cookbook on the way out. Every recipe I have made from this cookbook has been delicious. The book contains a basics/ how-to section that presents helpful hints and explanations of the ingredients. The instructions are clear, the ingredients are not impossible to locate, and the recipes are easily improvised upon. I love this cookbook so much I am buying one for my friend!
Southwestern Cuisine With Style.......2001-08-29
This is an excellent collection of Southwestern recipes with stylistic touches. Especially appealing to me are those with fruit or dried fruit, such as Lamb Chops with Dried Cherry-Chipotle Sauce or Spinach Salad with Figs and Jicama or Tangy Cheese-Stuffed Quail with Mango-Chile Salsa. New discoveries of combo flavors are Muchroom, Jarlsberg and Parsley Salad and Corn Risitto. Also tantalizing is Dessert, Taquito or the Arizona Princess Cake, rich with apples, tequila, chocolate and pecans. Another well done TenSpeed Press output, with sources and nice, large format with super color photos and clear instructions and ingredients. Certainly, those who love Southwestern food will add this to their collection.

Exceptional.......2005-04-20
Anyone interested in deer, whether naturalist, hunter, or both, will find this book fascinating, informative, and entertaining. The volume also benefits from being extremely well written. Petersen shares his passion while being academically sound. I leave this book out and accessible, reading passages, rereading them, and savoring the information as I search out my own experiences with the subject matter the author covers so well, then filling in the scientific background of the antlers, their growth, their history among aficionados from Petersen's text.
One of the best pieces of natural history writing ever........1997-11-06
This book contains fascinating written information about many members of the deer family, both living and extinct. It is well written and entertaining throughout. Petersen does a masterful job, not only of informing us about the
development and uses of antlers on various animals, but about man's fascination with those antlers.
The book is filled with information, yes, but also with interesting and often funny and always thought-provoking
anecdote. There are intriguing stories of deer and elk that have grown extraordinarily large or notable sets of
antlers.
Once you read Racks, it is doubtful you will ever look at an antlered animal in the same way again.

Handmade cards are an ideal medium for self-expression: the small, event-oriented format means we can indulge our creativity fairly readily, while tailoring a greeting specifically to someone we care about. The colorful, clever cards in Jain Suckling's Making Cards in a Weekend offer ample opportunity for creative play: confetti fish swim in an acetate sea, eyed by a hopeful (rubber-stamped) kitty; a paper stork cut-out dangles a little bundle; a fun-foam clown becomes a finger puppet. Techniques include stamping, foil embossing, quilling, and collage. Good step-by-step directions, each accompanied by individual photos, make these mostly easy projects even easier, and seven eye-catching "gallery" spreads provide dozens of additional ideas to take your card creativity even further. --Amy Handy

Bulb saver.......2006-03-13
At different times I have been given bulbs from people with vague instructions. Of course I lost most of them. This book gives clear instructions on planting and thinning and all of the rest of the care.My bulbs thank you.

Excellent resource for the identification of bulbs........1999-06-22
I have four of Taylors Guides (Bulbs, Annuals, Perennials, Roses). All these books are an indispensable resource for identifying every species of flowers imaginable. The care and growing information is brief and often doesn't address every question you may have, but it's certainly enough to get you started. There's an excellent section on pests, mulching and fertilizing as well as a glossary of nurseries. I LOVE THESE BOOKS.

Customer Reviews:
Title piqued your curiosity?.......2007-05-15
If you are reading this review, you have been sucked in by the title, probably because you somehow relate. If so, then the topic is of huge significance to you. The book is solid, and the content reflects the title.
Regardless of your background, if you have a Christian faith and desire to live out that faith with your children, then bring your highlighter and keep notes as you read.
Practical Help.......2007-01-12
Not everyone comes into parenting with great childhood experiences to draw from. Even if you did have a safe upbringing, ALL parents are forging a new way for their children. We are all "pioneers". This book is a wealth of information, and challenges you to re-evaluate how and why you do what you do and believe what you believe. Mary DeMuth shares her personal journey of overcoming her painful past. She offers great hope & encouragement to all parents. You will glean from her writing, no matter what your story is.
For anyone with parents.......2006-09-12
Building The Christian Family You Never Had is a must read for every couple contemplating having children, every parent who has children, and every adult who found life with their parents difficult or confusing. Not have the right role model can be frustrating--even confusing. But thanks to DeMuth's great advice we can learn to let go of the past, foster positive parenting skills, and shield our children from the negative influences others have left on our lives and continue to drill into our psyche.
This book is a MUST READ.......2006-07-14
Mary's book is a MUST READ; not only for every parent, but also for everyone who has ever had a parent. Her insights into family dynamics are revealing and instructive. Her words bring healing and resolution. Mary's skill as a writer makes her Guide for Pioneer Parents an enjoyable, fast-moving read. But watch out - one time through will NOT be enough! You will want to keep this Guide around to read over and over.
Like Gold.......2006-07-07
Of the three excellent books of Mary's I have been priviledged to read, this is the one that has had me most riveted to each nugget of truth. I am a quick reader, and usually don't read a book twice in a year but this one has me dipping into it almost daily. I have read and re-read the chapters, blinking in the freshness as I absorbed and processed each life altering concept. It has revolutionised my way of life, the sense of who I am, how fragile we are and how Great is Our God. It has given me a glimpse of the Father heart of God and my husband and I have turned our mistaken foundation of parenting back to the example in the Word, thanks to reading this book. I am also peeling away the 'onion layers' of my own childhood.
Mary is a highly proficient messenger of the truth. Her words fly directly from the heart of the healer in my belief and I am honoured to have walked through the pages of her journey and find my own healing in that experience.
Get this book. Even if you have the most Christian upbringing possible. Especially then.

Book Description
Shortlisted for the Raymond Klibansky Prize for Best Book in the Humanities.
What happens when an individual becomes the subject of many and divergent portraits?
“Biography,” says Stephanie Kirkwood Walker, “is a deceptive genre. Positioned between fact and fiction and elusive in its purposes, biography displays an individual life, an existence patterned by conventions that have also shaped the reader's experience.” In This Woman in Particular, Walker explores versions of Emily Carr's life that have appeared over the last half-century.
Walker contends that the biographical image of Emily Carr that emerges from an accumulation of biographies, films, plays and poetry as well as her own autobiographical writing establishes an elaborated cultural artefact — an “image” that is bound by its very nature to remain forever incomplete and always elusive. She demonstrates how changes in Carr's biographical image parallel the maturing of Canadian biographical writing, reflecting attitudes toward women artists and the shifting balance between religion, secular attitudes and contemporary spirituality. And she concludes that biography plays a crucial role in all our lives in initiating and sustaining debate on vital personal and collective concerns.

Book Description
Following mysterious clues to her family's suppressed past, Connelly uncovers a town's forgotten history and an epic tale of Irish immigrants on the American frontier. FORGETTING IRELAND is both a history and mystery, a story of western Ireland's Connemara coast and of Graceville, a small town in western Minnesota.
In 1880, at the height of Ireland's second famine, a ship of paupers was sent from Galway to take up land granted them by a Catholic bishop in Minnesota. There they encountered the worst winter in the state's history and nearly froze to death in shanties on the prairie. National and international newspapers featured their plight as the welfare scandal of the year, and priests and politicians traded accusations as to who was responsible. The immigrants were at last removed from the colony; their name became the town's shorthand for lying, drunken failures.
By chance more than a century later, Bridget Connelly, who grew up in Graceville, discovers her Connemara past. As Connelly uncovers the deliberately suppressed history of her family's emigration, she exposes an old scandal that surrounded the settling of the land around Graceville, one that pitted Masons, Protestants, Germans, and Yankees against Irish Catholics--and one that set lace-curtain Irish against the Connemara paupers. She also learns of an archbishop who was, according to farmer lore, "worse than Jesse James."
In this compelling combination of history and memoir, Connelly tells stories of an epochal blizzard, a famous Irish bard, an infamous Irish woman pirate, feuding frontier communities, and an archbishop's questionable legacy. She also learns why her family tried so hard to forget Ireland.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Family Story.......2005-06-11
My great grandfather was one of the Famine Irish who immigrated to the United States in the mid-19th century. He came from County Cork with his parents and little brother to the Port of New York. After living in Pennsylvania for several years they found their way to the rich farmlands of southern Minnesota. To learn more about his life and times, I recently began doing some family research. During the course of that work I came across Bridget Connelly's wonderful book.
Not only did I find Forgetting Ireland well written and fascinating, it also helped me to unravel my own family's story. While reading her book I found myself spending time in county courthouses, small town libraries, church graveyards, and at the Minnesota Historical Society. I poured over old township maps, land patents, census records, death certificates, and tombstones in order to piece together my great grandfather's life in Minnesota. Reading Bridget Connelly's book while doing my research was like taking two parallel journeys through Minnesota's Irish immigrant past. It was great fun; like being one of the History Detectives on PBS.
The next step for me is to contact the genealogy societies in Cork to see if they can locate the town and parish where my ancestors came from. If they're successful, then I would like to travel to Ireland like Bridget Connelly did and look for our relatives.
Anyone interested in oral histories, 19th century Irish immigration, or the development of Minnesota's prairies should read this great family story.
Fascinating Historical Perspective.......2003-03-10
The book arrived Friday and I couldn't put it down. It is an absolutely fascinating account of the early settlement of Minnesota by the Irish. I grew up in Graceville but had no idea of the rich and controversial history of the area. It's a great book but difficult to categorize. It's one person's search for understanding of her family, a historical account of an controversial incident in the history of Minnesota and the Catholic Church and an example of the difficulty we face in understanding our history. Was John Ireland "worse than Jesse James"?
