Incredible Story.......2007-06-04

This was an intense and enjoyable read from start to finish. It made me wonder what I would have done in the same circumstances, and it made me (as always) feel very lucky to have been born in the U.S. While it must always be difficult to know how much of any personal memoir is totally factual, I find the previous reviewers who claim it is a fake simply because "it seemed to be right out of Cross of Iron" or "I don't recall any other books mentioning this" or "I can't believe all of that could have happened to one man", to be wholly unpersuasive. I can even forgive mistaking the 6th and 10th armies at Stalingrad since the author never said he was at Stalingrad, and I can't say I can remember what other units were where, except for the one I was in, and I am not trying to remember nearly that far back.

That being said, I AM a bit troubled by the idea of building a huge fire so near the front, even if you are freezing to death. The Marine Corps refers to this as an "admin bivouac", as opposed to a "tactical bivouac" when nothing that might give away your position is allowed...especially fires. But then again, if it was so cold that you were in danger of freezing to death within minutes, I have to allow for the possibility that I might have been willing to risk it.

All told, it is an incredibly good book and I found it easy reading. The frequent typos and grammar errors did not remotely make it difficult to follow. I simply caution the reader to use his/her own judgement concerning whether or not to believe every detail of this account. I think the reader would be best served by reading several of these personal accounts and assuming that the truth will come to light in terms of the commonalities found in all of them, regardless of how "believable" they might appear to be.

This is really bad.......2007-02-09

I bought this book because it was recommended by someone writing in another publication. I wish I had spent some time reading the other Amazon customer reviews before plunking down my cash.

The book is simply unbelievable. No ancient veteran could remember such details, and no one except Zelig could have been witness to such a series of events. The writing is uneven, and it doesn't look like any editor ever reviewed the text.

Buyer beware.......2006-10-23

It's definitely an unusual book. With some severe editing it could be given a 3 or 4-star rating for fiction. But non-fiction it isn't. Even allowing for memory lapses that might have caused factual errors, no infantry soldier in the German army could possibly have had all the experiences, all the luck, and all the fortuitous circumstances that Jung claims. It would be interesting to know what Jung and Nesbitt were thinking when they collaborated to write this book, but not so interesting that one would take any time to find out.

Fake memoir.......2006-04-18

This story was probably constructed from a number of real memoirs, other sources like films, and Jung's and the author's imagination. Helmut Jung may have been a soldier on the Eastern Front but what he claims to have seen there owes more to imagination - perhaps the author's - than reality. Units composed of seven foot Mongols? (p. 297). Really. In the fifty or so books I have read about the German-Russian war nobody else noticed such units. In the same chapter, a description of the capture of a group of female Russian soldiers appears to have been lifted from the film version of 'Cross of Iron'. There are numerous other elements traceable to other sources throughout ths ridiculous book. Avoid wasting money on this 'memoir'. You will learn nothing about the real experience of combatants on the Eastern Front that you haven't already read elsewhere.

A Work of Fiction.......2006-01-13

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this is most likely a work of fiction. There is no real information given about the supposed author, Helmut Jung, other than his "incredible" wartime exploits. There are too many mistakes in the book about Jung's training and service to believe this is anything more than a piece of fiction put together by the American writer...it doesn't read or feel right. Save your money and buy "Black Edelweiss" for a real biography of a German soldier.

I highly recommend this book to any coaches that want to take their game to the next level. The one thing that this book does is break down every aspect of the game and gives you many, many ideas on how to implement the strategies explained.

I have been coaching baseball for 7 years at the high school level and have attended many baseball coaches clinics throughout the United States. I have learned many things at these clinics.

The beauty of this book is that it something that you can continue to reference back to again and again. This book has definitely aided to my players development. From defensive strategies to times to use the run game, this game covers it all.

I have also loaned this book out to other coaches and they have enjoyed it also.

If you are looking to take your coaching to the next level, I highly recommend this book.

After reading BASEBALL STRATEGIES and knowing it's available as a valuable reference, I'm looking forward to referring to it during the playoffs and World Series. BASEBALL STRATEGIES provides insight into the finer points of the game. It provides the rationale for the strategies used, and the decisions made regarding all of the individual match-ups in countless offensive situations that make baseball such a "complex simple game".

Besides baseball fans, the book is obviously written for coaches and players who want to develop their understanding of the game and improve their ability to react and anticipate in any given situation. Contributors to the book are successful college coaches who, as life-long students of the game, have brought their own experiences and perspectives to this well-written, informative book of offensive and defensive strategies and tactics. This is a great book. It explains Mr. Klein's very innovative concepts of venture capital and the road he traveled to come to the point of Wit Capital. It gives a person hope for raising capital for his/her business without going public. WallStreet.com delves into the interesting world of venture capital, an arena which few know about, and less understand. If you are interested in investments of any type, or in the vision of a genius entrepreneur, this book is a MUST read!

In a world where Internet IPO's are taken for granted the books describe the reality on how hard it is to go out there and get your initial investment. I was inspired by the book and couldn't stop reading. Great Book to Understanding the process of the street.......1999-01-23

Andy Klein's honest and inside view of how the world of big money brings start ups to the rest of us for investment is entertaining and enlightening. This is a must read for any investor, entrepreneur, or business executive who wants to see where his money really goes in the IPO process. No wonder banks, lawyers, and market making brokers are getting really rich while the IPO investor and the start up company themselves get the smaller cut. This book is simply great for really understanding how the street gets to much money for being the middle man between you and the company you want to invest in. Also, I think Andy gives us a glimpse of the future of IPOs and investing. Using the internet to cut out all the waste in the IPO process and get companies and investors lined up with each other for that initial offering is simply awesome for all of us. It will give all of us the same opportunities that only a few of the rich and privileged insiders have now. This book is great. Give it a try.

Excellent introduction to childhood.......2006-05-11

This book was passed along to me when I was pregnant with my first son. I wasn't really interested at that time, so I put it away and forgot about it. Over time, I realized how frustrated my son was in a world of plastic toys that broke easily, or didn't stay together to begin with. He was much more content to collect leaves in the park than to play with an action hero. When I became pregnant with my second son, I re-discovered this book and really looked at it. It seemed to validate much of what I was feeling, and I could see that my son had naturally gravitated to this lifestyle as well. This book helped us come up with other ways to make our lives more natural.

This book is not strictly Waldorf type. For example, Legos are suggested as a good open-ended toy in the book, where in a Waldorf setting, tree-blocks might be used instead because the Legos have a cold, sterile feel. This book is a combination of Waldorf/Steiner, Montessori and other "whole child" methods.

It is a great starting point if you want to give your children the best start to life.

I'll make it short. This book has been a great resource for me. I think it's wrong for people to write a review if they have apparently never read it. It covers so many different philosophies (Montessori,...) not just Waldorf.

A beautiful and practical guide to holistic parenting........1998-06-15

I give this book as a gift to all my expectant and new mother friends. It has chapters on child development, imagination and play, health, and education all from an integrated, holistic perspective. It is filled with beautiful color photographs and illustrations, practical advice and how-to information on making toys, children's games to play, etc. As a student of Waldorf Education, I recommend this book to all parents of young children who are interested in learning more about the Waldorf philosophy. Helpfully, the author of the chapter on education compares different educational philosophies including Rudolf Steiner (Waldorf), Piaget, John Dewey, Maria Montessori and others. A valuable and enlightening resource -- highly recommended.

Odds are you'll love this book.......1998-05-15

First, readers of these reviews should be aware that Dan Dugan has made a profession of his near-fanatical opposition to Waldorf education. If he had read this book, he would have found that it integrates many educational perspectives, including Montessori, Paul Goodman, Carl Rogers, Robert Cole, John Holt, Rahima Baldwin, parent-teacher coops, home-schooling, etc. One of the contributors to the book is the editor of the Educational Review.

In my opinion this book is exquisitely designed, full of heart, and manifestly dedicated to opening a ground where adults and children can meet and learn from each other.

As a member of the First Special Service Force -- a unique international commando unit later nicknamed The Devil's Brigade -- the author experience the war from unusual angles. His various wartime travels took him to locales as different as the Aleutians and the Atlas Mountains, and ultimately to Italy and southern France. The author's "baptism of fire" included the siege of LaDifensa, the landing at Anzio, the hard-fought road to Rome, and the French Riviera. His tale is a compelling one, of high adventure and the camaraderie of youth, of tragedy and triumph, of the near misses that only a survivor can tell about -- all of it told from the perspective of age.

A Valuable and Personal History.......2002-04-11

Having read almost every available book and text published about the First Special Service Force, this book is not only one which I found hard to put down but is also one of the few that I look forward to re-reading.

Mr. Cottingham's recollections are obviously the product of a sharp mind and are doubly valuable when recounted through his clear and concise writing style. The historical events described are obviously important in and of themselves, but the reader becomes much more engaged by the fact that Mr. Cottingham and his fellow Forcemen are sympathetic men rising to face the extraordinarily difficult demands made of them.

This is not a "blood and guts" book thrusting the subject before the reader and attempting to impress by grandious "war stories". Rather, this is a personal recollection presented in a self-deprecating style that allows readers to come to their own conclusions that these men were true heroes at a time in our history when they were needed.

We should be thankful for the wartime contributions of the men of the First Special Service Force and grateful to Mr. Cottingham for this historically valuable, well-written contribution to the topic.

Brief well paced narrative.......2000-11-23

Cottingham does a very good job of tracing his war experiences from the Aleutians to Italy and France. His description of a naer attack of walruses in the Bering Sea is facsinating as well as his near death in Italy under tank fire. The only weakness is the inability to develop the profile of his friends and fellow soldiers. A good well paced narrative.

Devil's Brigade-One man's story.......2000-02-22

A very well written book that follows one man through his training and fighting with the First Special Service Force. There are a lot of mini stories that show the bravery and tenacity that these hardened and well trained men possessed. This is not the glossy, "hell is for heroe's" kind of story, but it tells of the boredom and fear of waiting for combat and combat itself. The movie(Devil's Brigade) shows just a portion of what these soldiers went through..."Once Upon A Wartime" gives it a face and a shot of reality. Hats off to Mr. Cottingham and his fellow "Forcemen". Well worth reading
