Freud once said that nobody is "normal," and after reading Shadow Syndromes, you may well be convinced of that. While more than 50 million Americans suffer from full-fledged mental illnesses such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, millions more suffer from milder forms--yet they likely don't realize it. From chronic sadness to low self-esteem to shopping addiction to intermittent rage disorder, compassionate authors John J. Ratey, M.D. and Catherine Johnson, Ph.D. chronicle the often-undiagnosed (yet definitely insidious) "shadow" disorders. One of the most eye-opening points the authors make is that men who "can't commit" to a relationship may in fact be suffering from an unrecognized adult form of attention deficit disorder.
Shadow Syndromes is thorough, but at the same time it simplifies the technical aspects of mental illnesses--no stacks of footnotes or complicated neurotransmitter charts here. The authors use plenty of anecdotes to illustrate how everyday people have recognized and overcome shadow syndromes. They also prevent the book from becoming one big bundle of bad news by stressing that these disorders are treatable with medications such as Prozac, which Johnson took to handle her mild depression. Specific lifestyle changes are also advised, including more sleep, changes in diet, and more exercise. The "Care and Feeding of the Brain" chapter compiles other empowering, healing approaches. This book will be valuable not only for those who believe they're suffering from a shadow syndrome, but for doctors and therapists as well. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
Are you living under a shadow?
Do you or someone you love suffer from:
Chronic sadness
Obsessiveness
Outbursts of anger
The inability to finish tasks
Acute anxiety
Disabling discomfort in social situations
These are the "shadow syndromes" of major mental disorders that limit the lives, productivity, and happiness of millions of people.
Drawing on cutting-edge research, Drs. Ratey and Johnson challenge the most basic beliefs of our mental health professionals by uncovering the biological factors that often determine our personalities. They use real-life case studies to illustrate how shadow syndromes affect our everyday lives and how they can be treated--often dramatically--with diet, exercise, psychotherapy, and medication.
Shadow Syndromes is the revolutionary theory that sheds light on our life-limiting behaviors and offers the essential tools for changing them. This book will liberate you and those you love.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful observations, well written.......2007-03-27
I was familiar with John Ratey due to his involvement with Dr. Hallowell in books like "Driven to distraction" however I had never read any thing written by Dr. Ratey himself. I found his book surprisingly informative. This book is an easy read even for the lay-person.His explainations are easy to follow and understand. I have referanced this book several times when writting about mental conditions and sharing information with other who are intersted in mental health. As some one who is very familiar with mental conditions and mood disorders I found this book to be unique in it's presentation and ideas. Dr.Ratey does a wonderful job of bridging the gap between those who have sever mental conditions and those of us who are functional but still struggle with social expectations. I found his writing to be informative without being depressive or bias. I highly recommend for any one curious about mood disorders or various temperaments. One of a kind, very original.
Cultivate your shadow hypochondriasis.......2006-11-10
Shadows Syndromes is a worthy read, in that it does a good job of highlighting the major disconnect between diagnostic categories and reality. While the DSM model has its uses (research and billing being the only two I can think of right now), it also serves to reify the notion that mental illnesses are precise, discreet disorders. Any one with an ounce of clinic experience will tell you that real cases don't fit neatly into categories. The diagnostic questions sometimes help think through and organize the presenting concerns, signs and symptoms. But often the debate over whether someone is suffering from a pure mood disorder versus PTSD versus character pathology serves as a distraction. Or , another classic example: spinning wheels arguing whether a patient is an addict with psychiatric symptoms secondary to drug abuse or are they actually someone with a primary psychiatric diagnosis who is using substances to self-medicate their mental illness. It's a meaningless exercise based on an overly simplistic model. But that one does matter because insurance companies consider one of those scenarios worth paying to treat and the other worthy only of their contempt.
In reality, just like any other organ in the body, the brain mediates a number of functions. It is responsible for mood regulation, memory, sustaining attention, shifting attention, interpreting social cues, integrating sensory information, regulating motivation of all manner of behaviors, and impulse control, to name a few. We all have various strengths and weaknesses, and we all fall somewhere on a bell-shaped curve for performance of each of these various tasks. People who shake out on the extremes ends in one particular area probably look like textbook definitions of specific illnesses (a "pure" mood disorder with no other comorbidities). That's rare. Looking at it even just from this sort of statistical model, one would expect that, for any given disorder, the number of people who unmistakably qualify for a specific diagnosis would be just a fraction of those who almost qualify. These "subclinical" cases are what Drs. Ratey and Johnson refer to as "shadow syndromes." They go a step further and assert that these people actually suffer more from mental illness, because they slip through the cracks. They are not quite sick enough to find themselves needing treatment, but they are impaired by their symptoms.
It's an important perspective that is explained in simple, readable terms in the first part of the text. The second part then breaks the shadow syndromes down into specific "mild" mental illnesses based on the traditional categories. So just imagine how densely the comorbidities can layer now. Is there anyone motivated to pick up this book that won't conclude that they have masked depression, are slightly bipolar, have a subthreshold intermittent rage disorder, mild attention deficit disorder, a touch of "autistic echoes" and are a shadow addicts? Then what are the implications? Does everyone need to be in therapy? Does everyone need to be on a finely tuned psychopharmacological regimen and a behavior plan?
I recommend this book, I think it's well-written and thought provoking. It does succeed in explaining complex issues in a way that is understandable to people outside the field without being simplistic or dull to people within the field. That's a tough line to walk. And I like the emphasis on blurry boundaries to disorders, and the overall message of understanding how your brain works, what your relative strengths and weaknesses are and how to make the best of things. But I worry that the take-home message for many will be to feel these diagnostic categories expanding, billowing out of their margins, pathologizing every aspects of our humanity as it envelopes us. While it gets at the true complexity of these disorders, it also does so with the bias that mental illness primarily a Biological phenomenon. Perhaps this is to combat social stigma and people's assumptions that these deficiencies are due to personal weakness (or- just as damaging- all to be blamed on bad mothering). Or perhaps, it's that, as we learn more about these disorders (which we are doing at a rapid rate thanks to the new abundance of genetic data and advances in brain scanning that lets investigators see brain regions light up as they work), we learn more about the biological aspects, since that is what we are looking for and trained to interpret. So, now the authors expand the scope of these diagnoses and therefore lead us to the conclusion that more people could benefit from psychopharmacologic treatments. It's a nice book to recommend to your patients if you take only self-pay patients and only do psychopharm visits. But it skims over the real beauty of psychiatry, the reason it is the most intellectually challenging field in medicine and the most rewarding specialty to practice, which is the multifactorial, composite nature of everything our brain is and does at any moment. No doubt the genetics shape the brain, as does the metabolic and endocrine factors in the uterine environment during development, as does nutritional factors, and then near infinite environemental variables acting constantly on each individual. From things as foundational as the fit in temperament between primary caregiver and baby, all the way out to religion and culture. From the preconscious memories of the earliest childhood experiences all the way out to this morning's headline news.
You can take the best brain in the world, if there is such a thing, but I guarantee the individual possessing it will be no healthier than the families, systems, and societies they inhabit.
So thumbs up for a great read, and a perspective that broadens our view of the mind and mental illness. Too bad they interpret the new landscapes with tunnel vision, but it's to their credit that they left me wanting more.
I have found it very useful.......2006-01-22
A friend lent me this book in Portuguese, which is my native tongue, and I found it so good and useful that decided to try to find it in English to send to friends I have abroad to whom the informations it contains might be also useful, and help them in their daily life. So I was very glad to find it at Amazon and bought two volumes. I do hope they've enjoyed it as much as I and the friend whom first lent it to me did.
Gave me hope.......2005-07-14
Psychological problems due to having been developmentally disabled.
And then I read this and ...
I cannot recommend this book enough. This and the other book by J. Ratey, User's Guide to the Brain
Good Explanations of Personality Differences.......2005-04-21
This book clarifies many aspects of our personalities, helping us to understand why many mental disorders are just one extreme in a continuous range of types, and provides some hints as to why many of those types have advantages and disadvantages that would explain why such a range of personalities ought to exist.
I especially enjoyed their theory about how a smaller cerebellum could explain a number of different symptoms of a nerdy (mildly autistic) personality. I suspect it isn't exactly right, but it explains a good deal more than any alternative I've seen.
One warning - this isn't very valuable as a self-help book. It should be read mainly to improve your understanding of the human mind, not as a means of changing it.
Book Description
As cardiac patients, dieters, and just about anyone interested in maintaining good health can tell you, "fat free" too often means "flavor free." With The Garden Variety Cookbook and The Low-Cholesterol Olive oil cookbook, Sarah Schlesinger proved there's no reason why good food and good diet can't go hand in hand, and in her latest recipe collection she does so again, with distinction.
500 Fat-Free Recipes is the only cookbook to offer convenient, delicious, nonfat recipes each with one gram of fat or less-as well as a complete guide to reducing the fat in your diet. Finally, here's a one-stop resource for healthy eating.
Schlesinger began a dramatic reduction of her family's fat and cholesterol intake ten years ago as part of a program to reverse her husband's chronic heart disease. Finding hundreds of lowfat recipes-but very few nonfat recipes-she began her own culinary experiments. The result is a remarkable collection of dishes utilizing the freshest produce, zesty seasonings, and unusual combinations instead of added fat and fat-laden ingredients. Here is a plethora of prize edibles for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time. You'll find Pear-Cinnamon Muffins, Baked French Toast, Spinach Fettucini with ShiitakeTomato Sauce, Red Pepper Mini-Pizzas, Black Bean Lasagna, Cocoa Cake-all with one gram of fat or less. There's even a special section on dressings, sauces, and relishes.
Schlesinger also offers the tools you need to manage daily fat consumption. She explains the role of fat as necessary nutrient and potential health hazard, shows how to estimate how much fat you truly need, and includes tips on how to eat out on a low-fat diet, make the most of frozen meals, season dishes without fat, and shop for nonfat products. A nutritional-content analysis follows each recipe. With Schlesinger's help, you can control the fat in your diet (and still occasionally indulge in the higher-fat foods you crave)
Here are five hundred delectable reasons to get with the program and start to safeguard your family's well-being today. The recipes in 500 Fat-Free Recipes are so good, people won't even suspect they're healthy!
Customer Reviews:
Review of cookbook: 500 Fat-Free Recipies.......2005-09-01
The second edition which follows this one is MUCH better. I bought them in reverse order and loved the 500 More Fat-Free Recipies. This one is just getting up the momentum. However, both are good books to have on the shelf for no fat cooking ideas.
Simple, tasty, Fat Free cooking for humans.......2004-10-07
I ran into this title at the local library hunting ways to modify a diet for me to gain muscle and for my husband to protect his heart bypass which lasted 15 years and is now getting a worried eye from the Doc. Dragged in unwilling but knowing he has no other choice he's hard to please esp when his idea of a snack is 8 or 9 Mounds Snack Bites [not exactly low in fat] He doesn't miss it a bit. He also doesn't have to give up his beloved Chocolate with recipes like her Coca Cake with .9 [not 9 grams but point 9 grams] of fat or chocolate pudding ringing in with .6 grams fat and both with low cholesterol [0 cake and 2 pudding.]
She breaks down clearly at the end of each recipe calories per serving, fat, cholesterol [hanging it at 0 a LOT of the time], protein, carbs, Dietary fiber and sodium. Nice very nice but the recipes are varied, interesting and flavorful. I can make many of them without a special trip to the store on the spur of the moment.
Fruit without that ton of sugar added some recipes want to add but still sweet and flavorful. Excellent source for those meatless meals also or just plain great for adding to your favorite meat based meal. Easy to follow recipes esp for those who want to cut and not spend the entire day figuring out how to cut the fat. And the best part? You might not know you are [unlike the low sugar, low carb, low fat candy bar he just purchased "So they flavor plastic now?" ---The cake won hands down]
A must for any cooks library and a Golden book for anyone who wants simple recipes.
Painless and meatless.......2004-09-01
Schlesinger begins with a thorough guide to shopping, cooking and seasoning techniques. Organized by course, the book includes a chapter on breakfasts, lunches and snacks and another devoted to sauces, dressings and relishes.
Breakfast might include pear-cinammon muffins or frozen fruit pops made with yogurt and banana and for lunch there's vegetable tortilla wraps with nonfat cottage and cream cheese or baked potato pancakes.
No meat is included (except defatted chicken broth) but there's plenty of variety and creativity including marinated vegetable kebabs, vermicelli with roasted red peppers and lots of bean dishes, all well-seasoned. There's even dessert - apricot upside-down cake, pumpkin pie made with evaporated skim milk and egg whites, and numerous fruit creations.
Schlesinger sticks with naturally lowfat ingredients as much as possible and offers dietary information with every recipe.
Good for Ornish followers or lacto-ovo vegetarians........2000-08-25
In small leters in the introduction, the author explains this collection was developed for her husband who suffered from heart disease. They follow the Ornish program for heart reversal, which is basically low-fat, lacto-ovarian fare. The heart disease people, vegetarians, or those after better health/weight loss in general will appreciate this effort but those who do not know what "Ornish" means or those who skip the preface will be surprised that it's vegetarian and "no meat." Those wishing "meat-y" yet low-fat might be better off with one of Sue Spitler or Sandra Woodruff's books.
There is no space/some small space in the margins for notes although there is nutritional info. There are some vegan or vegan-friendly variations, but you have to hunt and pick. It's easier to adapt to L/O than vegan -- it's usually right there in the variation (ex: "use chicken broth or vegetable broth").
There weren't any overly exotic ingredients to me but the introduction does go over the ingredients used and explains what they are. That would be useful for cooking novices.
Some of the combinations are a little odd. Sometimes this works great and it's refreshing, other times it leaves me short of expectations. There is however, a consistancy of style across the recipes, and it's not bad if you want to be adventurous. I'd consider this more a "supplemental" cookbook rather than a "hardcore mainstay" one in my cookbook collection.
Overall, it's a nice collection, but not necessarily my favorite one when I was l/o and now that I am vegan I rarely use it. I didn't think it was so great that I wanted the other cookbooks she wrote later but who knows? Maybe those improved.
Excellent Book.......2000-01-03
Great tasting and easy to prepare. Alot of very creative recipes. Looking forward to making most of them. Since they are Fat Free the recipes do not include meat, fish or poultry but otherwise very exciting.

Book Description
The sixth in a series of essential resources for today's woodcrafters, this latest volume includes over 20 chapters covering every aspect of furniture making, from designing new projects to building each piece to last more than a lifetime, along with specific options for tables, cabinets, and chairs.
Customer Reviews:
Practical Design Solutions and Strategies:.......2007-03-31
Practical Design Solutions and Strategies: Key Advice for Sound Construction from Fine Woodworking (Essentials of Woodworking) The book is fine, clear, concise and plenty of photos and great information.
Finding the Golden Path.......2004-09-23
Taunton Press has two collections of articles on woodworking design in publication. As the title indicated, this collection focuses in the practical issues of furniture design, primarily to do with construction decisions. Speaking as someone who has occasionally 'created' himself into a corner, this is important material. After all, it never hurts to have a good grasp of what it really is going to take to make an interesting idea into a good piece of furniture.
Well illustrated and lucidly presented the six sections are Conceiving Your Projects, Organizing Your Projects, Engineering Furniture to Last, Construction Options for Tables, Construction Options for Cabinets, and Construction Options for Chairs. Each section contains articles of considerable interest. The detailing on table construction and the two articles on chair making are particularly interesting. Both focus on the 'holistic' factors of the project rather than simply covering joinery.
By fitting into the niche that sees design and construction as a process, the reader will come to see how each decision effects the final outcome. This means that what you see in your imagination is more likely to appear in front of you as finished work. While this is not a volume for beginners, taking the time to go through this book and understand the principals will keep you out of trouble and increase your satisfaction with the final product.
Furniture that's built to win.......2003-05-15
The furniture in this book isn't just built to last. It's built to win. As in, if you hit it with a car, the furniture will win. Or if you drop it out of a window onto the sidewalk, the furniture will win.
You don't have to build everything the way they do. I'm about to make some end tables with drawers, and I'm not going to use dovetails and haunched tenons. I'm going to use dowels. But the important thing is that I now know the right way to do it, and I know my way will at least work, and I know why some other designs won't work. I won't blindly follow plans or make design compromises out of ignorance. And one day soon, I'll make something the right way.
I knocked a star off of the rating because the book is an anthology of previously-published material and kind of a broad-ranging hodgepodge. But it is an excellent hodgepodge nonetheless.
I think books like this should be read not just by people who aim to build furniture but by anyone who uses furniture.
Beef Up Your Design Knowledge.......2002-01-10
I would not recommend this book to a complete beginner. There are more important books that should be read first (like Tage Frid's books and Taunton Press' "Basics of Craftmanship"). However, assuming that you have a bit of background and experience in woodworking this book is a great way to build your skills in designing great furniture or cabinetry as well as confronting the occasional design decision that creeps into "cook-book" projects.
Since this book is compiled from articles from Fine Woodworking Magazine there is a great breadth of topics and each topic that is covered is explored in depth. However, there are still a great deal of design related topics that are not touched upon. Make no mistake, this is not a textbook of furniture/cabinetry design. It is a collection of design focused magazine articles. Infact, some of the articles aren't even that focused on design. If you want to focus on design and design alone, this isn't the book for you.
Some of the articles are better written than others, although all are well written and applicable to pretty much any woodworker. The way the articles are grouped together is sometimes baffling, but if you just treat this as a thick magazine with no advertising and no fluff, you'll be impressed.
This is a great read and an important book to have in your woodworking library. As a woodworker that builds "stuff", you won't be able to avoid design decisions, and this book is a great way of getting your feet wet and stepping away from the complete construction plans you see in every woodworking magazine.
An Excellent Source of Design solutions!.......2001-05-09
This book contains a myriad of solutions to common furntiure design and construction problems. It presents design examples rather than full plans for projects but that's good because the examples show a variety of ways to approach various elements of the design of doors, cabinets, tables and chairs. I like this approach because it will help me build a vocabulary of options when I design my own projects or want to replicate furniture I only have pictures of and can't inspect.
My only complaint is that this is a collection of articles from back issues of Fine Woodworking magazine that wasn't well edited before being published in the book. It contains several editorial errors such as referring to figures by position on a page when they don't have that position in the book format, deleting a list of suppliers that's referenced in an article and at least one case where I suspect that the captions have been reversed under two pictures. The editors should have been more careful!
I originally read a copy borrowed from the library but I will be buying a copy soon to keep around for reference.

Pure new age garbage.......2003-02-24
This book is terrible. Useless talk about"The inner child" and extremely poor writting mar this so-called self help book. Help yourself, don't read it
A breakthrough.......2000-06-09
I cant beleive this book isnt bein published anymore. it was a ground breaker for me. I came from a seriously dysfunctional and abusive "family"(the f-word to me). Before i read this book, i had no idea there was a logic or order to the chaos of an abusive household, I guess i was very naive. This book is the one that started me on my path to recovery from my past.
YOU WILL NEVER FIND ANOTHER BOOK THAT EXPLAINS SO MUCH.......1998-01-22
I discovered this book when it was first published . It was the only way may husband would get any "help" He has panic disorder and his family was not disfunctional in the way we think of it. no alcohol no physical abuse, But Oh the emotional abuse! The Bill of Rights in the back gave him the tools he needed to release himself from the tie that bound him to his very disfunctional family. Find it. Read it. It can change your life
If you can get your hands on this book, read it!!.......1997-12-15
Probably the most important book written about the discovery of yourself through your family history. A real eye-opener on the social illness that is passed on from generation to generation in families. This book was used as a text in a college course, and was a great learning experience.

~
Prime ministers, the central figures in parliamentary government and the leaders of political parties, fill dominant roles in Canada's political history. Their importance is recognized in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography/Dictionnaire biographique du Canada by the space devoted to them. Each political leader is presented by a notable Canadian scholar who, following the rigorous standards of research, writing, and critical judgement set by the DCB/DBC, has brought life and understanding to the careers of the individuals who have served in Canada's pre-eminent political office. Canada's Prime Ministers brings these well-written biographies together for the first time in order to provide readers with an opportunity to reflect on the striking variety of personalities who have succeeded in climbing the summit of Canada's public life and the different challenges they faced in their determination to stay there.
What insights into the workings of our public life do the biographies of these fifteen leaders provide? Did these very different men have anything in common that determined their success? The DCB/DBC biographies make it clear that although there is no standard mould that shapes Canadian prime ministers, prime ministerial success depends on both "character and circumstance." The biographies suggest that one of the only commonalities between the prime ministers was an unstable mixture of personal ambition and a sense of obligation toward their country and their political party. Pragmatism in making policy and in devising strategies of survival, rather than principle or ideology, often seems the guiding determinant in the success of Canada's federal political leaders. For a Canadian prime minister there is usually no higher ground than the claim to be the defender of national unity against threats of disruption and disintegration.
In addition to these themes, the DCB/DBC's fifteen biographies of Canada's prime ministers is also an important historical reference tool, providing details about personal lives, sketches of close associates, a narrative of major events, and an assessment of accomplishments and failures set against the backdrop of economic and demographic growth, the social crisis of depressions, and the impact of world events. Together, they recreate the political and social panorama stretching from the campaign for confederation in 1867 to the struggle to entrench the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the new Constitution of 1982. Told through the lives of Canada's leading politicians this is a remarkable, engrossing, documented account of modern Canadian history.

Book Description
The Labour Party became a major political force during the 1920s. It unexpectedly entered office as a minority government in 1924; five years later as the largest party in the Commons it took office again. For many the party's enhanced status was associated closely with its leader, Ramsay MacDonald. The years of optimism were destroyed by rising unemployment; in August 1931, the second Labour Government faced pressures for public expenditure cuts in the midst of a financial crisis. The Government collapsed, and MacDonald led a new administration composed of erstwhile opponents and a few old colleagues. Labour went into opposition; an early election reduced it to a parliamentary rump. This study offers a uniquely detailed analysis of Labour in the 1920s based on a wide variety of unpublished sources. The emphasis is on the variety of identities available within the party, and demonstrates how disputes over identity made a crucial contribution to the 1931 crisis. Thorough scholarship and distinctive interpretation combine to provide an important examination of a major episode in twentieth-century history.

Great biography of a misunderstood Prime Minister.......2004-09-27
Though a key member of the early Labour Party and its first member to become prime minister, Ramsay MacDonald's reputation has long suffered as a result of the "great betrayal" of 1931. As a result of his resignation as head of a Labour government and his assumption of the premiership of a National Government he was reviled by party stalwarts as the man who broke his party and went over to the enemy. In this biography, David Marquand sets out to rehabilitate this long-reviled figure and restore him to his proper place in British history, giving him credit for the many accomplishment that were overshadowed by the legacy of his decision.
Born in 1866 to a single mother, young Ramsay grew up in Lossiemouth, a small fishing village in north-eastern Scotland. Excelling in school, he went first to Bristol, then to London, where he was quickly involved in radical politics. Joining the Independent Labour Party in 1894, he rapidly rose in their ranks and became secretary of what would become the Labour Party when it was formed in 1900. As secretary he stressed Labour's shared goals with the Liberal Party, a view that made the "Lib-Lab" electoral pact of 1903 (which paved the way for the party's foothold in the House of Commons in 1906) a natural fit. Marquand gives MacDonald considerable credit for his work in laying the groundwork for the Parliamentary Labour Party in the succeeding years, work that set the stage for Labour's emergence as the primary rival to the Conservatives in the 1920s.
In spite of his prominence, MacDonald nonetheless endangered his career by his opposition to Britain's entry into the First World War, with his stand forcing his resignation as leader of the party. Yet he soon recovered from this setback, as respect for his decision grew in tandem with dissent towards the conflict. By the end of the decade he was reinstalled as the head of the party, where he presided over the supplanting of the fragmented Liberal party as the dominant party of the left and Labour's victory in the 1923 general election. Their plurality in the House of Commons inaugurated the first of MacDonald's two periods as Prime Minister. Marquand gives MacDonald high marks for both his handling of economic issues and his foreign policies, which helped to establish Labour's legitimacy to hold office. Yet MacDonald remained withdrawn emotionally, isolated by the death of his wife Margaret in 1911.
This isolation became even more pronounced with the crisis of 1931. After Labour's defeat in 1924 MacDonald became Prime Minister again in 1929, just as the world's economies were entering the Great Depression. Faced with a falling pound, the government turned to American bankers; when they demanded cuts in public expenditure as the price for saving Britain's currency, the Cabinet refused and MacDonald resigned. He soon returned as the head of a National government comprised of members of all three parties but dominated by the Conservatives. While acknowledging MacDonald's indecisiveness and failures of judgment, Marquand sees the Prime Minister as a beleaguered figure facing pressure to decide and with nobody in whom he could confide. Increasingly little more than a figurehead, he continued to serve as Prime Minister before turning the office over to Stanley Baldwin in 1935 and retiring from public life.
Though published over a quarter century ago, this book remains the definitive work on its subject largely on its strengths. Well written, it uses a considerable quantity of archival material to present a persuasive case for MacDonald as a Labour Party founder and misunderstood Prime Minister. Yet there is little on MacDonald as party administrator, a glaring weakness given Marquand's argument for MacDonald's role in building the party. Nevertheless, this book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand this key figure in British political history, one whose reputation has suffered for too long from the many myths surrounding it.
