4 out of 5 stars Country Boy Gone Soldiering.......2007-10-03

George Waple III does a great job describing his childhood in West Virginia, and his subsequent service in the army in World War II and in Korea. His memory for details is excellent, and he has adequate photo documentation. His array of medals and decorations is truly impressive. Although his book is well-written, it suffers from numerous misspelled words and errors in grammar and syntax. It is too bad that CAPT Waples did not see fit to spend a couple of hundred dollars for a competent proof-reader to handle these small details. Nevertheless, it is a fine read from a man who accomplished wonders with very little to work with. HOOAH!, Captain Waple

5 out of 5 stars The Way It Was--The 1940s/50s in the Service of our Country.......2007-02-24

George Waple III is a charming story teller both in writing and in person. He tells of humble beginnings in Waple Mills, VA up to the present time. I found it fascinating that Waple worked with Patton prior to WWII and that he handled the ceremonial horses at the White House. You'll get a touch of what it was like to be that country boy gone soldiering around the world--World War II in the European Theater to Korea and Nam. He writes as he speaks--real country, real people

3 out of 5 stars A Great Story of a Soldiers Memoirs.......2000-04-14

I found this book most enjoyable, personal, real-life, and a picture of soldiering not often portrayed. It's warm and humorous style carries the reader along the trails of his life with charm and flow, keeping one always engaged in the adventure of his career, and building admiration all the way through, from the spunky farm kid who was not put off by any adversity, but who made the most of all situations.

I think the U.S. Army owes George Waple a vote of thanks.

Mr. Waple is a terrific story teller.

5 out of 5 stars Country Boy Gone Soldiering.......2000-03-27

The value of the book is in providing an authentic account of one man's life that is important and interesting. It's the story of real life by a very real person. It spans growing up in Virginia, early Army life and tours in Europe in WWII and in Korea. He has some very interesting experiences and touches many people, some famous, like General Omar Bradley, Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio. A well written book and a great read.

"A Great Read" - Pat Buchanan, MSNBC and former Presidential Candidate

"I hasten to advise that we found your story not interesting, but fascinating, not moving, but inspiring - both candid and reflective." - Zane E. Finkelstein, Army War College Foundation Press

This review was recommended for Army Magazine: "This is a book about high profile soldiering written by a soldier. As a senior enlisted soldier, George Waple held important positions within the leadership of the US Army following World War II. He offers insights into the lives of the giants that lead the Army at mid-century. Later commissioned by General Bradley, he went on to hold important positions to cap off a successful 24-year career. More importantly, this book is an example of the kind of communications we should encourage among our soldiers. It is a good read of a personal story. Obviously, the Army made him proud and in turn he made the army proud. The autobiography of a proud and happy soldier cannot help but encourage future soldiers to join the Army. All of us soldiers can find parts of George's story that we can identify with - from combat ceremonies to retirement. I would like to see a hundred more personal stories like this on soldiering written by soldiers." - Neal Cosby, Institute for Defense Analyses, Alexandris, VA.

"What a magnificent package! You do indeed have a rich and fascinating tale to tell-What a career-What a life...I assure you, all items will be in our museum...the book too. We won't forget you service old comrade..." - Colonel Gardiner, Commander, 3rd Infantry, Fort Meyer, VA

"I have just read the book, "Country Boy Gone Soldiering." I found it most enjoyable, personal, real-life, and a picture of soldiering, not often portrayed and I think the US Army owes you a vote of thanks." - General Gordon R. Sullivan, (Retired)

"I finished your book on a lovely day in Cambria, CA, this past weekend. I laughed and cried along with you. The soldier crawling in front of you (who got the bullet in his forehead) could have been my own son. Thank you for sharing your book with me, I loved it! " - Marjorie Whitney, Santa Barbara, CA

    Book Description

Without preaching, moralizing, or theorizing, the authors of The Habit Change Workbook deliver a program for breaking bad habits. Grounded in proven cognitive-behavioral principles, the book helps readers assess their habits and proceed to dismantle them. The authors explain precisely how habits are formed, profile people who are trying to replace a bad habit with a good one, and encourage the reader by tracking the progress of these individuals. An interactive workbook provides helpful lists, monitoring forms, and exercises. Also included is detailed guidance on overcoming specific habits ranging from nail-biting and overeating to procrastinating and excessive spending. Final chapters provide information on support groups and other resources, and advise parents and family members how best to help a child or loved one who is struggling with a self-destructive habit.

3 out of 5 stars the habit change workbook. How to break bad habits and form good ones.......2007-04-01

So far sense i have been using the book it has been somewhat helpfull. But i still yet have got to put the techniques to full use.So i think there is still more i can get from it.

4 out of 5 stars developing better habits.......2007-03-09

I have not started to use this book yet but it really looks like a program that works if you work it- to paraphrase a 12-step mantra. I will have to form the habit of daily review of habits and I haven't broken through that barrier yet, but I further reading in the book should help with that. The program suggestions are very concrete and engaging. What is sometimes hard for me is remembering I don't have to understand all my motivations and dark corners to begin to change things. But I've come to see that is true.

4 out of 5 stars unnecessary for simple habits.......2006-05-29

This book will be helpful to people with complex lifestyle bad habits such as overeating, gambling, and procrastination. But, for breaking simpler, unconscious, behavioral bad habits, there is an extremely simple method, which is not covered, and for which no book is necessary. These are habits such as biting nails, pulling hair, talking to yourself, picking skin, touching acne, cursing aloud, where it is difficult to quit since you don't think not to do it until after the fact; i.e. there's no moment of deliberate decision before you engage in the behavior.

The method is as follows: First, it is probably necessary to consciously make some kind of effort to stop the habit---e.g. biting your nails. So if you realize you're about to bite them, or have just started biting them, then consciously prevent yourself or stop immediately. But, as everyone knows, the willpower method by itself is usually unsuccessful. The idea is to choose some kind of personal forfeit as "punishment" for the behavior in question. Then, whenever you realize that you have just bitten your nails, you perform the forfeit. (Of course it's necessary to consciously realize you've bitten your nails, after the fact; but one usually does realize this when one is trying to break the habit---the problem is you don't realize it until it's already too late.)

The forfeit can be anything that is (1) something you would typically NOT want to do at random times on a moment's notice; (2) not so onerous that you might actually refuse to do it from sheer laziness; (3) not, in itself, potentially habit-forming; (4) can be done anywhere, at any time. Examples of forfeits I have tried or considered are: (a) going to a dictionary, finding a word that is new to you, and learning its meaning; (b) multiplying two two-digit numbers together in your head; (c) choosing a random date and calculating its day of the week in your head (using Conway's Doomsday algorithm); (d) making yourself listen to a particular song you hate, in its entirety; (e) doing ten pushups. Although I haven't tried it, (a) is nice since it has the side-effect of improving yourself in some way while breaking the habit; but it requires that you always keep a dictionary handy.

The single most important thing in applying this method is not to cheat and not to delay. That is, every time you bite your nails---even if you just started to---immediately perform the forfeit (or at least do so within a minute or so). Do not delay, or "pretend to yourself that you did the forfeit", or save up multiple forfeits and do them all at once, later, when it's more convenient.

You will quickly find that the sneaky brain becomes aware of the fact that every time it unconsciously decides you should bite your nails, your conscious mind will come in and make it do some work it doesn't particularly want to. This makes you become aware of the habit before you actually do it, and gives you time to choose not to. After some time, you will stop wanting to at all and the habit is broken. (This method also works for instilling positive habits, e.g. brushing your teeth within ten minutes of dinner---just do the forfeit when you realize it has been more than ten minutes and you haven't yet brushed your teeth.)

This cure does not, of course, address any root causes of the habit.

Hope this helps and makes buying a book unnecessary for some people. Others, who want to change more complex behaviors may find The Habit Change Workbook a valuable resource. Good luck!

    4 out of 5 stars If you're serious.......2006-04-12

I don't know if I'm obsessive compulsive or not, but I have a few habits that I engage in that I believe cause me guilt and anxiety and that I cannot quite get a handle on. I first checked this book out at the library and found myself quickly wanting to photocopy most of the pages. So, ultimately, I bought the book.

The book is full of worksheets and record charts - it seems 50/50 in terms of lecture/practical application. If you are into that, fine. At first, that put me off. I didn't want to write that much stuff down. But when I got further into the nuts and bolts of changing the habit, the pages I wanted to copy became greater and greater because the ideas and exercises were so thought-provoking and led me to eye-openers and ideas of how to change my life that I couldn't seem to grasp before.

I don't know if I'll use this system step-by-step, but the good thing about the book is that I believe it still works and is an invaluable tool for self-examination whether you follow it that way or not.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the beginning was a bit tedious for an impatient self-starter like myself and to warn those who don't want to do any self-examination and just want a lecture to check this out at the library first. Otherwise, I really think that you cannot lose by having this book and I'm glad I'll have it in my library for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars A Personal Lifesaver!.......2002-03-09

I am the webowner of Mental Health Today.

This excellent workbook will teach you how to deal with behaviors such as nail biting, skin picking, trichotillomania and addiction in regards to shopping, tv, internet, and gambling. Also focuses on changes in sleep habits, health & fitness, and relationship problems. They state the book can assist with obsessive compulsive disorder with further help.

For chemical dependency issues, you are advised to seek professional help first and then use the workbook for overall lifestyle changes.

This workbook could not have come at a better time for me. I've been working out for 6 months and out of the blue it is no longer fun and I'm now beginning to gently slide into my old workaholism pattern. I know that my old gym schedule needs to be changed and at the same time my work load at home has increased dramatically and I feel lost on how to organize my life and get myself motivated to get back to the gym and fight my workaholism.

The workbook comes with just exactly what I need. Help in changing my thoughts and requires me to come up with a plan of action. For me, it has been a lifesaver and the timing could not have been more perfect. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cook Book.......2007-02-15

I love to cook. Over the years I have collected a large number of cookbooks of all varieties. I am also of Italian decent so naturally I am somewhat biased with regards to Italian cookbooks. I owned a copy of this book for years and I used it so often that it literally fell apart so I purchased another copy. The recipes in this book are extremely easy to follow and Dom Deluise fills the book with humorous stories that any Italian can relate to. The meals I have cooked bring back memories of eating at my grandparents home and the taste is almost identical to the way my grandmother made them. I thought those meals would be lost forever when they died but thanks to Dom, I can re-create them in my own home and my children can carry on the tradition. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to cook and eat great southern Italian food.

5 out of 5 stars the easiest and by far the best italian cookbook ever .......2005-10-26

I lived with a very Italian aunt who made the best food, and for so many years I assumed that these recipes- lental soup, pasta fagioule, eggs with tomato sauce, pasta primavera etc were from hand me down recipes. To my surprise, after inquiring about how to make "her tuna fingers," she handed me this book. It blew me away how simple and easy the recipes were. Really good Italian food! Its a shame that I bought so many Italian cookbooks trying to perfect these dishes when they were all right here. Dom Deluise adds personal stories which are a little sappy but still entertaining as well. It gives you something to read while your cooking dinner. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Read this...it'll make you feel better.......2004-08-28

My mom bought this book when it first came out in the late 80s. This was probably the first cookbook I ever looked at. I loved the stories and started trying out the recipes when I was about 11 or 12. Throughout the years the book has lost a few pages, gained quite a few smudges, and has literally broken in half, but it's still my favorite cookbook. In fact, I like to think it is this book that ultimately inspired me to go to Italy to attend culinary school. I'm now moving into my very first apartment and am ordering another copy of it (don't want to take my mom's) so that I can have it with me...even though I've pretty much memorized it. I know I'll be using this book my whole life.

          Customer Reviews:

          2 out of 5 stars I don't regret buying this book, but..........2007-08-12

I honestly don't know what to think of this book.

          Pros:
          - Lots of combinations
          - Good for basics, you can add your own little twists and embellishments at whim.
          - Great for learning more about sweater construction (different necklines and sleeves, etc)
          - Great for inspiration
          - Helpful for altering other existing patterns (Love the pattern you've got? Hate the sleeve? This will show you what other sleeves you can put on.)

          Cons:
          - 1000 combinations is pushing it. I don't consider adding a belt to an outfit "making a different outfit" so why would I consider adding a belt to a sweater "making a different sweater."
          - The book never goes beyond basics. If you have some skill, you can make these all your own, but other than that these seem to be things you can find elsewhere. (A classic crew neck with a fitted sleeve is nothing new, and you could probably find a pattern somewhere that was better for you individually.)
          - Sizing issues. Everyone has said it, I know, but trust me, it's just as tricky to size down as to size up. Honestly, offering only 3 sizes with no help for making them smaller or larger is crazy. The patterns I've found most helpful offer at *least* 5 or 6 sizes. People come in different sizes, patterns do too.

Overall, I would say that I do like the book, but I'll never make anything from it by following the pattern word-for-word. If you like to change around patterns (switch out sleeves and necklines, etc.) this book might help you. If you want to make basic sweaters, and you are an average size, this book would probably be great. If you love DK Rowan yarn, go for it. But if you fall on either end of the size range and you like funky patterns, details, chunky yarn, and super-fast knits - steer clear.

For the record, I too am neither British, Republican, or have a ton of free time. I'm also in the middle of re-sizing the fitted cardigan, so if this sounds too much like a rant, that would be why.

2 out of 5 stars Park your mammaries at home - they won't fit under these sweaters........2007-05-06

I'm not a huge person. I wear things from 14-20, depending on what it is and where it's got to go.

I was thrilled with 1000 Sweaters, until I realized that it had that pretty hard limitation of 40" in all the bust sizes, for all the sweaters. Someone in another review said you could knit on it a bit and get it up to 42". Well, I'm a 50DD, and there is no way I could stretch or knit these sweaters well. I'm an intermediate, not a knitting engineer. =)

Anyway, I gave the book to a friend, someone I'd call "willowy". She has trouble making the patterns up due to the lack of complete plans. We have both run into trouble with the book on the "yuppie sweater" front, too. You expect people to have a bow and a matching vest for each one.

I give the book 2 stars, because it really could have been a good idea, and the layout is great.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent concept.......2005-09-11

I think this book is for intermediate-advanced knitters, as you are still essentially making up your own pattern and need to use some judgement/experience in the process.

I agree with D G Van Velsen. I too live in Australia where 8-ply is most common and, while different yarn wieghts and larger sizes would be a wise inclusion, I am lucky enough to be quite average in size, so find this book quite accommodating.

Where previous reviewers have disliked the constant gauge (being 22 sts/4") I believe it would be much harder to mix-n-match the garment pieces if they were in different guages, as each gauge would require a different pattern I think.
Alternatively, making it up in a larger guage may be all that's needed to make the pieces in a size that suits, but this is where one's experience kicks in.

Also, one reviewer mentioned that the largest sizing is a finished measurement of 40". While the most common 'large' size is 40", there are body sections in 42" and 49".

It also has an indirect benefit of teaching you what you like in a pattern - sleeve-head types, neck lines, etc, and how they will suit whoever you're knitting for. Which, in the end, makes for a better knitter (no point knitting a wardrobe if it doesn't suit the owner).

One last thing: my copy's author is Amanda Griffiths (not Jane Crowfoot, as listed above) - although it has the same picture as displayed on this page. Odd.

So, overall, a good addition to the shelf - I'm glad I bought it.

          5 out of 5 stars A Neat Concept for a Book.......2005-04-07

This book has a really neat concept. It's a nominaly 128 pages of patterns. But what that doesn't say is that the patterns are broken down into parts. The top two thirds or so of the page is a picture and instructions for a basic bodice design. The bottom third is split separately so that it can be set to multiple sleeves, pockets, necks or whatever that fit with the bodice shown on the top of the page.

As a result, there are sixty four or so basic designs (picture on left, instructions on right, each in four sizes from 21.5 to 40 inches in bust size) and to go with them are another sixty four (I guess you would call them) accessories. Although I'm not so sure that a sleeve is an accessory. Combining all of these options enable you to make over a thousand different sweaters.

All of the patterns are set in the same gauge (22 stiches x 30 rows over 4 in.) and are calculated to produce this gauge using size 6 needles.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific addition to my library........2005-03-30

I have spent part of my day playing with the mix and match possibilities of this book. I now have 5 sweaters I "have" to create yesterday. The only slight drawback - and then only if you have already bought yarn of a different gauge - is that all the sweaters in the book are in one gauge (22sts x 30rows = 4inches). Other than that, this is a terrific addition to anyone's knitting library and I know I'll be "playing" with it for a long time to come.
