Book Description
A haunting portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential figures of the mid-twentieth century, this biography takes a penetrating look at James Forrestal's life and work. Brilliant, ambitious, glamorous, yet a perpetual outsider, Forrestal forged a career that took him from his working-class origins to the social and financial stratosphere of Wall Street, and from there to policy making in Washington. As secretary of the navy during World War II, he was the principal architect in transforming an obsolescent navy into the largest, most formidable naval force in history. After the war, as the nation's first secretary of defense, he played a major role in shaping the anti-Communist consensus that sustained the U.S. policy of containment during the Cold War. Despite his many achievements, Forrestal's life ended in tragedy with his suicide in 1949.
This absorbing study not only takes an understanding look at the many-sided man but presents an authoritative history of the great but troubled years of America's rise to world primacy. Winner of the 1992 Roosevelt Naval History Prize, the book enjoyed wide acclaim when first published and is now considered a definitive work.

Excellent biography except for chapter on Forrestal's death........2005-07-30
I was impressed with this book's scholarship, but after looking into the sources for the chapter on Forrestal's death, I have had some second thoughts. James Forrestal fell from a window of the 16th floor of the Bethesda Naval Hospital in the wee hours of the morning of May 22, 1949. The authors relate numerous details of the Forrestal's actions prior to his going out the window, but none of them are sourced directly to any of the witnesses, the various medical personnel who were on duty that night. Rather, the strongest assertions that support the popular theory of suicide, which they endorse, turn out to be from sources that I was unable to trace, even using the services of the Library of Congress in person.
The best source to start with would have been the official investigation, the work of a review board convened by the head of the National Naval Medical Center, Admiral Morton Willcutts, which took the testimony of most of the witnesses (with a few notable exceptions). Hoopes and Brinkley unforgivably neglect to tell the readers that at the time of their writing that testimony was still being kept secret. They also fail to tell us that the conclusions of the review board were released in brief summary form almost 6 months after the conclusion of the board's work, and that summary concluded only that Forrestal had died from injuries suffered from the fall. It did not conclude what caused the fall, that is, it did not conclude that it was a suicide, and it made no mention of the cord that was tied tightly around Forrestal's neck.
On my third try, I obtained the report, including all testimony and most of the exhibits, using the Freedom of Information Act. It contradicts almost everything that Hoopes and Brinkley have to say about Forrestal's actions prior to his death. (...)

A Spell-Binding Biography of a Most Remarkable Man.......2002-04-16
This story of Krishanurti's life is the most fascinating and complete biography I have ever read. It certainly helps that the book begins with intriguing accounts of Krishnamurti's unusual childhood, in which he was "found" by the Theosophical Society. ... "Leadbetter suddenly noticed one of the boys, outwardly a rather skinny looking little boy with a shaved front to his head and a pigtail. He was about thirteen (actually fourteen but appeared much younger), and had a little brother with him. He saw that around this boy was an aura of such brightness and glory as he said no one else in Adyar had, and that was so outstanding to him that he at once made friends with the two brothers."
Thus begins a most unusual relationship between the very young Krishnamurti and the Theosophical Society (Annie Besant was appointed guardian of Krishnamurti and his beloved younger brother one year later, in 1910. There were many advantages and disadvantages to the transformed life Krishnamurti led, and this book covers all the most interesting facets of Krishnamurti's life with beautiful photographs, hand-written journal entries, and interviews with Krishnamurti and other great thinkers of his time.
This is the story of a man devoted to giving spiritual teachings -- a man who inspired many (including Bruce Lee, Van Morrison, Henry Miller, Deepak Chopra, and Joseph Campbell) with his tremendous wisdom and clarity. Many of Krishnamurti's thoughts and quotes are included, such as, "In yourself lies the whole world, and if you know how to look and learn, then the door is there and the key is in your hand. Nobody on earth can give you either that key or the door to open except yourself."
I highly recommend this book, both for its exquisite attention to the details and big picture of Krishnamurti's life, and for the inspirational wisdom it imparts to the reader.
The man was his teaching.......2001-01-16
I first came across this book in a library and borrowed it, and the impression I got, sustained for 3 years to make me actually buy it. As Krishnaji would say, the only way of understanding and discovering your self is through the mirror of relationship, what better way of understanding Krishnaji than through the way he interacted with people from different parts of the world and with different perspectives? That said, Krishnaji still remains a mystery as he rightly should, but nevertheless a delightful mystery.....
Absolutely enlightening.......1999-05-05
Krishnamurti, although interesting and intriguing, is not known for his entertainment value. He was as austere and uncompromising as he was fascinating. This book is entertaining, and interesting, and intriguing, and fascinating. It is my educated guess that Krishnamurti's teachings will become more well known in the years to come. Much more well known. This book is an excellent introduction to his teaching as well as a supplement to his actual wealth of books. What other book offers an invitation to what it means to being really aware and seeing truth, and also shares anecdotes of the like of which Krishnamuti is on a picnic with Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, and Aldous Huxley, to name a few. This book is a wonderful gem, full of insight. Absolutely enlightening.

Worth the Read.......2007-10-07
Her background gives you a variety of perspectives to try to deal with a difficult time in life. I found several of the websites and products to be helpful. It gives you somethings to try. Every woman is different so not all work but I have found her insight very helpful.
Informative.......2007-09-18
It helps to know that you are not alone in this journey in this stage of life.
Easy into the Pause.......2007-01-03
This is a lighthearted approach to understanding a serious subject. I have purchased numerous copies to share with friends. I highly recommend this book to those whodo not want a clinical outlook. This book will make you laugh out loud at some of her experiences. I have found it to be a great resource asI sift through the "pause".
Wow! Menopause and So Much More! .......2006-08-13
I read two free excerpts of this book on WebMD and they were both wonderful - filled with great information and very helpful suggestions. So I bought the book - and I wasn't disappointed - it was even better than what I read online. It is definitely one of the only menopause books I know of that discusses all treatment options - both traditional and non-traditional, plus it also is a great resource for mid-life health in general. It not only covers traditional menopause symptoms - like hot flashes and night sweats and memory loss - it also offers important information on bone health, on mid-life weight gain, fatigue, women and heart disease, hair loss, incontinence, reducing cancer risks, - so it's really so much more than just a meonpause book. In fact, you really get your money's worth with this one! But again, that's what I've come to expect from what I read on WebMD - they always feature the best and most informative articles. Wow - a great book!
Waste of Paper.......2006-08-09
I think the book is very flippant and uninformative. If you are looking for hard facts, skip this one. I'd like to return it for a refund and I'd be embarrased to pass it on.

The subtitle of Sally Samson's The $50 Dinner Party astutely sums up the book: Twenty-Six Dinner Parties That Won't Break Your Bank, Your Back, or Your Schedule. And boy, does she deliver. This is a no-frills cookbook, as spare as you can go, and is a sleek beauty as a result. Sampson opens with a chapter of little bites and dips, then it's right into the main menus, with detailed discussions on each of the 26 dinners, plus sidebars of information for clever timesaving ideas. A presumption is made that you are already comfortable in the kitchen, that you speak the language of recipes, and that you know how to time a meal to get the food out and onto the table when your guests are ready to sit down. Sampson leaves the marching orders to you. Her job--and she's brilliant at it--is stimulating your planning imagination with a lush array of possibilities for delicious dinners for six that she feels will come in under $50, sans wine, coffee, and tea.
A couple of wonderful meal examples: Roasted Chicken Breasts with Dried Figs, Apricots, and Prunes; French Bread; Mixed Green Salad with Red Onions and Toasted Pine Nuts; and Rice Pudding. Or, Grilled, Marinated Flank Steak with Soy, Sherry, and Dijon; Potato Cake with Garlic and Olive Oil; Salad of Arugula, Avocado, and Mango; and Cheesecake with Raspberry Sauce.
Sally Sampson deserves a medal for taking the worry and guesswork out of dinner entertaining, all while watching the purse strings. --Schuyler Ingle

I never leave for work without this book!.......2004-04-20
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to cook for friends or family. I spend most of my time cooking for strangers on private boats but I always receive fabulous feedback on any recipes from this book. Bake "Dain's Grandmother's Carrot Cake" for your next gathering with friends and you will be the star of the meal! The recipe is incredibly easy and sinfully good. I make it in a sheetcake pan and it slices up nicely for dessert portions.
Be famous for your dinner parties!.......2003-11-04
Go out and buy this book and you will be famous for your dinner parties. I have had this book for a while and I have cooked almost everything in it. The lasagne is to die for and there are even recipes for drinks. There is everything you need to be a successful dinner party host. Sally Sampson takes all the anxiety out of having people over for dinner.
a great jump start.......2003-06-07
The idea behind this cookbook is great -- take some of the mental obstacles away from entertaining by getting money and time out of the way. In the end the author accomplishes this goal. This book is great for inspiration to 'just do it' when it comes to dinner parties.
That being said, her cooking definitely has its limits. There are 26 menus, all including a main course, side dishes, either an appetizer or a salad, and a dessert. Personally, my cooking focuses a lot on desserts, so I couldn't help but notice that she totally cops out on the dessert portion of the book. There are several cookie recipes in the back of the book and she falls back on those for a number of her 'desserts.' Meanwhile, in trying to list easy dessert recipe, there's not a single pie!! My advice: don't serve cookies for dessert. Just get some fresh fruit and cream if you don't want to think about it. Or substitute your own favorite dessert recipes for hers.
One minor thing: she mentions that she and her food processor are attached at the hip, and she does use her food processor in a lot of recipes. If you have one, great. If you don't, mostly you can get around it, no problem, but just be aware.
Nonetheless, the book is good. Her philosophy of making things ahead and understanding that the real reason for a dinner party is to have friends over is great, and she sticks to the philosophy in her recipes. The carrot cake as mentioned in another review is good. As is the chicken saltimbocca, the sherry flank steak and her mashed sweet potatoes. also i like the butternut squash with apples and walnuts, etc. Some good recipes.
If you need a bite sized way to jump start your entertaining aspirations, this is a good place to start. Also, you may find inspiration in thinking "I can do better than this!!" as I did. Go for it!
If you don't mind doing a little more reading and a little more of your own thinking, there are some great easy menus and a similar philosophy to be found toward the back of Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything. Also there's Barefoot Contessa Parties -- a similar philosophy but with a much more experienced author, great recipes and lots of pretty pictures. However, it doesn't have nearly as many menus as $50, so take your pick.
the best dinner party cookbook for those on a budget.......2002-04-24
Try the incredible chocolate-bread pudding, yum!! Amazing.
This is just a fab cookbook for those people who want to entertain, who want to impress their friends' taste buds, but just don't have the time or the cash to do so Martha Stewart fashion.
The menus I've tried all work so well together. This is my one cookbook that gets heavy usage, eventhough I've got all those Silver Palate ones too. Also having the menus makes it so easy to plan a dinner party, the recipes work very well together, saving you the time of searching cookbooks trying to figure out what goes well with what.
She's like a cooking coach..........2001-03-18
I've been cooking my way through this book because she tells you what to do when, so that everything gets done on time and with no problems. The recipes are all easy and will make you feel very confident when you see the result, and I'm starting to get the hang of preparing meals on schedule - feels like she's coaching you all the way. I only gave 3 stars because although my roommate loves the dishes I make from it, I don't think they are the best recipes. They are good, but not great. Like, her recipe for Key Lime Mousse just tastes like flavored whipped cream. The chocolate date bars came out more like a cake texture, than a bar. The chicken recipes are overkill to my palate because her marinades are a ton of spices and herbs that go along with a nationality - Moroccan or Carribean for instance - and personally, I don't think it's a good idea to put so many spices in one dish, then you can't really savor them. I've also noticed errors in the directions that make it seem that perhaps some of the recipes started out as high quantity and the scaling down of them was not perfected. I will continue to use this book for practice though, because for that, it has been invaluable. When I've done all the menus in this book I think I'll have learned a lot about planning them myself, and then I can use whatever recipes I want! 1 other thing - she says to try not to buy ultra-pasteurized dairy products and I don't understand why -- this process is shorter than pasteurization and the end product is purer and tastes fresher.

Book Description
Detailed photographs and illustrations, a simple to follow style and sixteen years of experience teaching thousands of people how to tan, allow Matt Richards to show you exactly what you need to know to successfully turn your deer elk, moose or buffalo skins into the leather preferred by outdoorsmen and native peoples for millennia. You'll learn the traditional methods of brain tanning as well as how to use a dozen eggs or soap and oil instead. This revised and updated edition includes substantial improvements to the process that make it even easier for you to produce soft and durable buckskin.
What's New
A new 15 minute step that creates:
Easier to soften hides
Hides that come out super soft
Hides that take the dressing even when dry, which in turn:
Removes the variability of trying to get the perfect moisture content before dressing
Makes it much easier to get complete brain penetration on thick hides, which makes tanning thicker hides such as moose, elk or even thick deer, way less work.
Makes it so you can skip one of the wringing steps (which takes 15 minutes itself).
Other key new highlights include:
Different skinning cuts for a better hide shape.
How to tan Moose, Elk & Antelope
Bibliography (thorough and user-friendly)
Important improvements to the Bucking process.
Important improvements to the Dressing step to ensure success for first timers.
A step-by-step guide to varying this books' Basic Method if you want to try the `pre-smoking' method, or if you want to tan without the bucking step.
Buckskin is durable, soft, washable and warm. A hand-made garment for people all over the word for millennia, it breathes and stretches with your body, cuts the wind and won't tear on briars. It is excellent to wear hiking, hunting or around the house. Plus you don't need to hunt. Deer skins that would otherwise go to waste are available every fall from neighbors, locals and butcher shops.

worth every penny.......2007-05-13
Deerskins into buckskins is a wonderful resource. Matt Richards completely breaks down the science of tanning into an understandable form that even newby tanners can utilize. This book only covers the wet scrape process, but he provides insight as well as alternative methods. I would definately recommend this book to anyone interested in making their own buckskin as a hobby or small scale company. Matt also keeps it fun, this is not a dry list of things to remember.
Deerskins Into Buckskins: How To Tan With Natural Materials, a Field Guide for Hunters and Gatherers.......2007-03-09
I had been brain tanning for many years when I first read this book. After trying some of Matt's ideas, my hides came out softer the first time and had very few hides that needed re-softening.
Matt's book is simply written, his ideas and techniques are solid, and if you follow his instruction, you WILL make great leather. I once met a young lady that showed me her first four hides she ever brain tanned. They were great, and she learned how to do it from this book. In fact, I use his book in the brain tanning classes I teach. It is that good.
the best available resource for anyone interested in the craft.......2007-01-25
Without much success, I stumbled around for a while trying to figure out how to brain tan deer hides. Then I came across Matt's book, Deerskins into Buckskins. Simply put, there is no better resource available for anyone interested in learning how to tan. The reader is carried step by step through the process in a way that makes it easy to understand. Each and every step is thoroughly explained in language that is easy to follow. Beyond the basic process, there are sections that cover variations to the standard tanning method, making stuff with your finished hide, the history of tanning, trouble shooting, and more. I picked up the book dubious that I cold learn a seemingly difficult process from a book alone. I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend Deerskins into Buckskins for anyone interested in tanning. There is also an instructional DVD companion. Between the two, it would be impossible for anyone not to become a successful tanner.
Deer skins into Buckskins- A great book!.......2007-01-16
I have read all the previous reviews on this book and was personally refered to this book by a person skilled in brain tanning. He said it was the best out there and I agree. Matt starts out with some history of tanning, and a good overall understanding into the chemistry behind tanning. With a better understanding of what happens to the skin, one can better understand the whole process. I did my first skin as the book directed, from the tools, soaking, working the hide and smoking. The book is well written and easy to understand and follow. Good illustrations but some of the pictures could be in better focus. The book has some instructions on how to cut, sew, and use your tans for clothing, etc.
This is a great book and very interesting to read. Just buy the book and you will know why I gave Matt and his book 5 stars.
Deerskins Into Buckskins: How To Tan with Natural Materials.......2005-08-09
This is the most in depth and comprehensive book on the subject of brain tanning that I have purchased. The Author does not hide any of his secrets. I have already done a couple of smaller skins and am satisfied that the methods that Matt Richards teaches are what I was looking for. I am now ready to move on to a deer hide, and I have also purchased two fresh buffalo hides, one to rawhide, and the other for a braintan robe. My freezer is filling up fast. Thank you Matt Richards for putting your knowledge into print.

Natural.......2002-07-10
This book is explains more about HOW the female monthly works than any I've ever seen. Explaining when a pregnancy can and can't occur, as well as the changes occuring during each phase. This would have been great as a 12 year old in the 7th grade "health" class. The book sticks strictly with the different signs and symptoms of the female monthly cycle. Uses plain english, without being offensive or prudish. As a mother of three -- it was worth the time I spent reading it. Any Mom with a daughter, a married couple who wants a natural birth control, or who are trying for a baby. This book removes the guesswork.
Can be used to help plan a pregnancy as well.......2001-11-08
My husband and I borrowed this book from a friend who used it to PREVENT pregancy, but we used it with the intentions of getting pregnant. We tried alot of things, including infertility treatments, but it wasn't until after we read this book and used the information to our advantage that we were able to finally get pregnant. Our son is now 6 months old, and we tell all our friends who are having trouble conceiving to give this book a try! It is an easy read, which is sometimes what you need... just the basics :)
Homespun Symptothermic Method.......2001-05-24
A fantastic introduction to what is now being called the "symptothermic method," a combination of calendar rhythm, basal body temperature, and cervical fluid logging that narrows down your "safe" and "unsafe" days for intercourse. Written by a woman who lives on The Farm (an intentional community in Tennessee), in the same spirit as "Spiritual Midwifery," by Ima May Gaskin. This is a great book if you're tired of regulating your fertility with the help of drugs or potentially dangerous devices and don't mind keeping a chart to keep track of your hormonal changes.
A little too thin.......2000-01-15
This book is small and easy to read, but not as comprehensive as "the Art of Natural Family Planning" by Kippley, or even Aguilar's "The New No Pill, No Risk Birth Control". Good to get the basic idea, though.
"Hassles" made easy with the help of one little book.......1998-10-30
"A Cooperative Method of Natural Birth Control" by Margaret Nofziger is a book that in an easily understandable manner helps women get to know their own body better. Most of us know about counting days and circling in days at the calendar. But there is always insecurity... Why? Because we are not machines, but humans, and humans don't always go by the clock.
For a Catholic couple, or others who prefer not to use artificial contraceptives, the method of natural family planning can bring a new dimension into their relationship. Natural family planning doesn't have to be a hassle, and it doesn't have to be like a cold shower either. Quite on the contrary it gives people the opportunity of thoroughly enjoying their marriage without fear of unwanted pregnancies; or it helps find the best time to conceive if children is what they want.
This book gives the reader an easily understandable method of figuring out which days she is fertile and which days she is not. The diagrams are easy to interpret as well; at least I think so, and I usually don't understand a thing about diagrams !!
The woman reader will also learn about other things that may constitute a larger margin of error when using the natural family planning method, things that she may not be aware of when counting days or measuring body temperature.
All in all, I recommend this book, both to couples who want to learn more about natural family planning, as well as to women who want to know more about how the female body works.

Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing illustrations.......2000-12-12
The majority of the illustrations in this book are in black and white, and those in color are consistently very muddy reproductions. Therefore, if you are tempted to buy this book because you are interested in the looking at Yeats's painting rather than in the extensive biographical and critical text, this book is quite likely to disappoint - and particularly at the price. If you are familar with the catalog that was part of the Centenary Exhibition of his paintings and drawings you will know that they can be reproduced with stunning effect.

Book Description
There is far more to Jack B. Yeats than has met the eye. His father once said, "Some day I shall be remembered as the father of a great poet, and the poet is Jack." Purser argues that Jack B. Yeats' writings have been misunderstood, that the writer was educated among the people in the West of Ireland, without the social and literary preconceptions and traditions of the universities. He suggests that Jack Yeats was wily and clever in his use of symbolism. With this background in mind, and with the aid of evidence previously unused-including a new chronology-new interpretations are given for many of his works and an overall pattern in the novels is revealed. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of literature, Irish literature, and Irish Studies. Contents: Illustrations; Abbreviations; Introduction; Life and Style; Note on the Chronology; The Theatrical Context; Creating a Theatrical Rhetoric:àR "The Deathly Terrace" and "The Silencer; The Trilogy:" "Apparitions, The Old Sea Road," and "Rattle; The Context of War (1):" "Harlequin's Positions" and "La La Noo; The Context of War (2):" "La La Noo" and "Harlequin's Positions; The Context of War (30:" "The Green Wave" and "In Sand; Jack Yeats and the Novel; Sligo" and "Sailing Sailing Swiftly; The Careless Flower" and "The Amaranthers; The Charmed Life; Ah Well" and "And To You Also; Conclusion; Manuscript Sources; Bibliography; Notes; Index"
