What is wrong with this title....?.......2003-02-24
When I brought this book, I expect to read about the modern pro and con of actions of Robert E. Lee. Instead, what I got was a superifical biography on Lee and some summary judgement of his actions based on the author's say so. So where is that debate of Lee's critics?? Many people like to dismissed Lee's critics as revisionists but they got it backward. While Lee was alive, he was soundly critized in many circles by veterans of Confederacy and by his foes. It was only after Lee's death did this mythology of Lee's greatness took on a godly scale as the reconstruction period was ending. This period of Lee's mythology is the true period of revisionism which did not really end until Thomas Connelly came out with the Marble Man which brought Lee back to Earth and where author critized without merit. This book lack any depth and appears to be pretty shallow work. If the author wanted to back up Lee, do with so with evidence and logic. Just saying so don't mean much. This book will probably go back to the used book store soon......

Taylor's book is a satisfactory survey of Lee's life. Unfortunately, that is not how the book is billed. Taylor purports to answer Lee's critics. I'm squarely in his camp; I find much of the criticism of Lee to be scholarly opportunism: an attempt to make a name through iconoclasm. Taylor is right when he notes that the attempt to puncture the Lee myth went too far, but he fails to convincingly demonstrate why. He brings up specific criticisms infrequently, inadequately lays out the critic's argument, and often dismisses the criticism without having made a convincing case of his own. His arguments concerning Lee's attitudes toward slavery are never fully convincing, for example. This is particularly distressing when one can see that, in most cases, the convincing counterargument is there, waiting to be made. By constructing his book in the format of a chronological narrative, Taylor lost the opportunity to level a blast at academic graverobbers. A book aimed at answering Lee's critics needs to spend a great deal more time and effort on the critics and their arguments. To Taylor's credit, he never attempts to whitewash information damaging to one of his points. He tries to be complete in his portrayal, and that alone makes this a worthwhile read.

This work is a substantial contribution to the history of philosophy. Its subject, the ninth-century philosopher John Scottus Eriugena, developed a form of idealism that owed as much to the Greek Neoplatonic tradition as to the Latin fathers and anticipated the priority of the subject in its modern, most radical statement: German idealism. Moran has written the most comprehensive study yet of Eriugena’s philosophy, tracing the sources of his thinking and analyzing his most important text, the Periphyseon. This volume will be of special interest to historians of mediaeval philosophy, history, and theology.

Excellent monograph on a key medieval philosopher.......2006-10-14
John Scotus Eriugena, or 'John the Scot', was in Irish monk and Philosopher who worked in 8th century Ireland. Surprisingly from this backwater in Dark Age Europe, one of the finest minds in Western philosophy emerged.
Eriugena is something of a mystery. Little is known about his life, his education, and of his influence. Nevertheless Moran in this monograph manages to untangle fact from fiction and explains his very complex philosophy in wonderful detail.
Eriugena was a highly sophisticated idealist. In this sense he believed Mind, or rather God, was the highest reality and all comes from this. However, Eriugena was also very daring and speculative. He argued God was essentially 'nothing', from which everything comes into existence. By creating the universe God also in a strange way creates himself; a view strangely consonant with the ideas from modern physics which seem to suggest our universe emerged from a big bang and also all matter comes from particles emerging from the vacuum of space. He also argued the human mind is essentially creative of all reality, anticipating later philosophers like Kant, Berkely and Descartes who held human conciousness to be essential in the way the world is constituted for us.
Moran, himself a Professional Philosopher, explains Eriugena's system and influences in good detail, and was one of the reasons I decided to study Philosophy.

John Scottus Eriugena, the ninth-century Irish philosopher and theologian, is known as the interpreter of Greek thought to the Latin West. He was perhaps the most important philosophical thinker to appear in Latin Christendom between Augustine in the fifth century and Anselm in the eleventh. In this volume, Deirdre Carabine provides a clear and accessible introduction--the only one available in the English language--to the thought of this important figure. In part I, Carabine describes the intellectual revival of the ninth century and situates Eriugena's role within that movement. She looks closely at Eriugena's life and intellectual achievements, including his contribution to the theological controversy on predestination and his roles as teacher and translator of Greek thought. She also examines the Periphyson, undoubtedly Eriugena's most original and important work. In part II, Carabine discusses Eriugena's metaphysics, the structure of reality, the theocentric character of creation, and the role of the trinity and the primordial causes. In particular, she explores Eriugena's employment of negative theology and his understanding of human nature. In conclusion, part III looks at Eriugena's interpretation of the return of all things to their source, including his belief that all people, saints and sinners alike, will return to paradise to the "vision" of a transcendent God. Revealing the unique and compelling nature of Eriugena's thought, and showing why his work continues to appeal to a modern audience, this volume is required reading for students and scholars of medieval philosophy and theology.

This short monograph by D.Carabine offers a useful introduction to the philosophy of Eriugena, one of the best Christian philosophers of the early medieval period. This book is not as comprehensive as Dermot Moran's, but nevertheless remains a useful guide to Eriugena's thought.
An Excellent Introduction to an Unjustly Forgotten Thinker.......2003-02-13
Deirdre Carabine has written a concise, well thought out and extremely well written account of the life and philosophy of John Scottus Eruigena.
Although time has not been kind to Eriugena, his contibution to both philosophy and Christian theology cannot be denied. He stands out as an intellectual bridge between the age of Augustine and Pseudo-Dionysus and Anselm during an age when Europe was only beginning to get back on its intellectual feet. His most original and important work, the "Periphyson", remains as possibly the most important philosophical text of its time.
Carabine examines not only Eriugena the teacher and translator of Greek thought, but also Eriugena, upon whom that Greek thought, especially in its Neoplatonic form, lay at the heart of his metaphysics and his attempt to reintroduce the notion of Being back into philosophy.
An introduction, especially to such an original and compelling thinker as Eriugena can either scare us away from further studies or prod us on to learn more. Carabine has successfully accomplished the latter, and more power to her.
rediscovering a great mind.......2000-07-19
John Scottus Eriugena - WHO? This man was one of the great thinkers of the "Dark Ages" and this book goes a long way in bringing his work the respect it deserves. The book is an overview of his works with an emphasis on the "Periphyson", but it also includes other works as well. The author seems to have a good working knowledge of John Scottus and does a good job of not only uncovering his work, which may be new for many readers of philosophy, but also at uncovering the man and his passions as well. This is a book I can recommend for anyone with an interest in philosophy and/or theology. For students of theology who are interested in the topic of predestination it can be a thought provoking resource. Well written and entertaining as well.

A great snapshot of the terrors and trials of residency.......2007-08-04
Dr.Transue does a great job of infusing her story with accuracy and gory details, but still keeps a very human approach and doesn't lose sight of her patients as people. This book is so interesting for anyone (and most of us hopefully have)who has been on either side of medical care to see both sides. It is a great book to help patients realize how human their doctors truly are and the enormous amount of stress their caretakers are under,and yet they still manage to have patience and grace under fire.

ok, i admit it - i went to med school with Dr. Transue so I am biased - I like her personally. But while that may bias my opinion of the book, it also lets me assess the book from a first hand perspective. Her writing really "captures the moment". It is so accurate that I kept waiting for the part where she mentioned my name or had me walking through the door. Never happened, but regardless - the stories she told were very realistic, and the emotions she conveyed were the same types of feelings that most of us experienced as we went through our medical training. great job emily - waiting for the sequel!

Very well written, compassionate stories.......2006-01-03
Being a Registered Nurse myself and also being married to a physician, I'm very aware of all the hospital stories that occur during training. In fact, I dated many medical students when I was young and working at a teaching hospital. I also now live in Seattle. So this book was a "given" that I would read it.
I thoroughly enjoyed every story she told. She struggled with being "human" rather than tough and non-feeling as many doctors appeared to be. And that was an endearing part of her story. Doctors are human and have feelings. And Dr. Transue learned in her training that being tough isn't necessary and that it's ok to become involved in patient care and really "care".
I worked L&D most of my clinical career in San Diego. A real tough OB doctor worked with me for years----he could be very matter of fact and hard core with his patients. One day I realized that a patient of mine in the triage room was carrying a stillborn. He was the doc on call. I was concerned that he would be too tough and not soft enough for this patient. But when he pulled the curtains and cried as he told her the baby had died, I realized that he is a caring man and had compassion for his patients---just tried too hard not to show it. I gained a new respect for him and doctors.
This is an excellent book about the training for doctors. I highly recommend it for all those newly graduated from medical school. It just might help them with that "human factor".

Although there isn't enough information presented here for the truly novice brewer(just a short formulation chapter at start of the book and the appendixes in back)I found this book to be very interesting to read. People have come up with all sorts of recipes, who'd ever have time to try them all?, and such names! The names these guys have come up with are almost better than their recipes. I especially liked the chapter on hombrews made with honey, those might be the easiest for a novice and seem to be hard to find.
An excellent book from extract to all grain!.......1998-10-01
Karl presents a comprehensive collection of ale and lager recipes. The recipes include both extract and all grain recipes at about a 50/50 porportion.
I enjoyed the book immensely as I was departing from kits and following recipes. All the recipes I made came out fantastic and I still make some of them today.

Several recipes come from competitions. I had found these recipes came out exceptionally well.
Although one would think that the recipes from competitions would be more complex, but in fact they were not.
I used the book for extract recipes only, so I cannot comment on the all grain recipes. However speaking for the extract recipes, it is certainly a book I have read time and time again as I select what type of beer I am going to make next.

I'm new to scrapbooking, but I've flipped through many, many books (although not magazines). This book contains some of the best styles I've seen: not cheap looking or trendy. There are advance techniques in here, but I think they are explained well and broken down in easy steps. Besides, most people who scrapbook/do crafts are very willing to learn new and interesting techniques. I think this is a book I will refer to for a long time as my skills develop. I also like the sections on organizing the workspace, choosing cameras, printers, and computer techniques. It's an excellent well-rounded reference.

Physical Therapist using the book for ideas.......2002-12-14
I am a home health Physical Therapist who deals with many "couch potatoes" This book gives great ideas for getting people with low motivation to begin moving. It also provides a way to progress the exercises. The explanations of body mechanics and anatomy have helped me with patients who may not understand more technical jargon.

I am not even a TV addict, but I figured if someone can get fit during commercials I could certainly spend the same time using the same techniques from this book! For those of us who can't bear to think of a 20 minute walk or the drive to the YMCA, this book gives easy to maintain, achievable exercises. Well written, easy to understand and follow, and fun to boot!! This one is a winner!Here's to more commercials and less flab!
