Falling Down for the Count
Excellent. I enjoyed reading this book from front to back.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite books.......2006-08-09
This book is an unexpected little gem from the front cover to the very end. I stumbled upon it travelling and dealing with serious medical issues and it has unpretentiously reinforced my spiritual strength, and sweetly comforted and inspired me. I have a special place in my heart for this book.
An Irish voice.......2004-07-16
What moves me very much is the lilting, playful, droll voice of Maura O'Halloran. You would imagine that the Irish character and the Buddhist tradition are poles apart. Maura's passion whirls them together in an instant.
This book is a good companion indeed.
As simple as a....b.....c....................2002-05-29
This book is a lovely tale of a life well lived. It is told in simple, clear prose. These pages describe what it means to be fully alive to reality. Maura shares with us what Zen is all about as a lived experience, rather than some abstraction, which, I suppose, is the only way it can be demonstrated. The book is full of quiet, irreverent, good humor, which is one of the qualities of Zen if I understand it correctly.
Maura tells us a lot about Zen in this book. More importantly, she tells us in poetic prose what it means to be fully attentive and absorbed in the present. What I take from this book is that living a good life, after the fog has lifted, is as simple as a...b...c.......
I
overstated.......2001-03-23
This is a book which reads more like a hagiography than a journal. Maura O'Hallaran's both time in training and understanding were, for want of better words; brief and comparatively small. She may well have been embarrassed by the book herself if alive today.
Zen is eternal life!.......2001-02-27
A marvelous book from beginning to end. The utter unpretentiousness of Maura O'Halloran's rich spiritual journuey is a miracle to encounter. It's so difficult, at book's end, to take leave of this shining young person, this quiet buddha , but she strengthens us for the inevitable by teaching so pure, so real, so necessary, that the natural world of our own lives is changed forever, charged with her abiding and beholden to her example. Others here have stated well the 'content' one finds in these pages; I wish only to say thank you to Maura's wise and devoted family for making the effort to provide us with these journals and family letters. Her mother's Introduction, with its simple and moving veneration of her daughter's life, sets a loving compass for the journey ahead; her sister Elizabeth's drawings are clearly pulled from her own heart, and her brother's afterword together give us an infinitely deep understanding of the means behind the meaning of this extraordinary young woman's life's journey. This is a book of great hope, abundant humor, and sure grace for anyone who reads it. Abundant recommendation without reserve; read it and walk anew the paths of love.

Life/Marrige saver.......2007-04-12
This book has been very helpful. It promotes fixing the problem BEFORE hitting rock-bottom. I have used some strategies and I have been successful so far. It is, of course, a process that takes time, but this book gives hope. I highly recommend this book to anyone who lives with an alcoholic but isn't ready to hit rock-bottom with them. These strategies take effort on the readers part, but it is worth it.
must-read.......2007-01-03
The best book I've found for friends and family members of alcoholics and drug addicts. I read it in two sittings and plan to re-read it as my boyfriend goes through the recovery process. This book has saved my sanity, and may have saved his life.
Insightful, cutting edge help for those with family problems.......2004-02-11
This book provides practical real-world direction for dealing with painful, frustrating situations involving substance using family members. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a family member who won't get help for their addiction. It is easy to read and gives clear direction for real world problems.
A brave new approach.......2004-02-11
For anyone who has struggled with the helplessness and the pain of loving an alcoholic, this is the book for you. Meyers and Wolfe lay out a definitive and realistic plan of ACTION. Finally someone has the courage to say "You CAN help your loved ones." This unique approach has the potential to give new hope to so many. Thank you to these authors.
Book Description
"A culinary gem for everyone who wants to bring the true flavor of Italy into their home."
-Paula Wolfert
The distinctive cuisine of Abruzzo, passed down through generations, is unveiled in this landmark cookbook. Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, Abruzzo is one of Italy's most striking regions, where the tastes of the earth and sea create a cuisine of vibrant flavors.
Author and teacher Anna Teresa Callen grew up in Abruzzo and understands its regional specialties. Here is simple cooking at its best, with flavors kept fresh and clean. The robust tastes will linger, continuing to lure you into the kitchen to bring the joy and abundance of Italy's pastoral land to your own table.
The book features more than 350 recipes such as Cardoon Soup from Anna Teresa's grandmother, the savory pie Fiadone Villese traditionally served at Easter, and the dessert La Cicerchiata from Italy's Jewish heritage. Callen's experience as a cooking teacher means the recipes are expertly written to ensure the best results every time.
Framing the tempting recipes are the author's recollections of her bucolic girlhood-fishing with her father in the Adriatic, hunting for mushrooms in the forests, and rolling out pasta by hand with her mother-immersing you in the patterns of daily life in Abruzzo.

VERY BAD, NOT RECEIVED AFTER ONE MONTH!!!.......2007-05-30
I am very disappointed since I have not received the book after more than one month!!!!
A One of a Kind.......2004-07-31
I was really excited to finally see somebody focus a cookbook solely towards the wonderful cuisine of the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is a region of Italy shrouded in mystery and mystique and one of the least tourized regions in Italy. The cuisine is peasant in nature and very simple to prepare. This book is well written and the recipes are very user friendly. I do have two minor complaints though. Other than a few family photos, there aren't any pictures. I would've thought with a region as captivating as Abruzzo that the author would've included at least a few pictures. Even without pictures, it's still an amazing book. My only other complaint would be that there are a few recipes that don't belong, including recipes for Neapolitan pizza, hamburgers, an Americanized version of fried calamari, and a Bolognese sauce. Even with the two complaints I still rate it 5 stars. If you're into authentic Italian food as I am, this is a must in anyones collection. It's a one of a kind book. Congratulations to Mrs. Callen on a superb publication.

Forte e Gentile, strong and gentle, is the motto of Abruzzo, the Italian province east of Rome that stretches from the towering Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea. Anna Teresa Callen, in Food and Memories of Abruzzo, is most engaging as she shares stories of her life and presents the varied food of this little-known part of Italy where she grew up and still spends much of her time. Callen composes a symphony of sounds and aromas to surround the recipes in this memoir-cum-cookbook, describing how her grandmother, cutting pasta for pastina "into tiny dots, made a tic-tac sound with her knife," and recounting how the "pungent smell of coffee wafting from the kitchen" woke her from her daily summer siesta. Old photos from family albums add to Callen's vivid memories.
Using Callen's recipes, you can recreate Maccheroni alla Chitarra, the Abruzzese "square spaghetti" some Italian restaurants in the U.S. and elsewhere now serve, and robust Porchetta, sublimely succulent spit-roasted pork served with its crackling, mahogany skin, as well as the colorful fish stew Brodetto di Pesce, which her father used to make, and L'sagne, a flour-and-water pasta unique to Abruzzo. In a balancing act, Callen gives recipes for simple dishes perfect for today's cooks along with more complicated regional specialties and spectacular holiday dishes. Her guidance for making La Cicerchiata, an ancient dessert made for Mardi Gras by assembling honey-soaked "chick peas" of fried dough, whole almonds, and candied fruit into a colorful ring, is as clear as her directions for Mozzarella all'Erbette, a combination of sliced cheese dressed with a puree of fresh herbs and capers that can be put together in minutes.
Callen crams this book with basic culinary advice and a wealth of information about the Italian kitchen, demystifying the differences between salsa, sugo, and ragu, for example, and advising how to make smooth polenta using cold liquid. In all, this is an exceptional volume for cooks, Italophiles, and anyone who likes a good story. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
From the Introduction: "Years ago, at the beginning of my culinary career, I wanted to write a cookbook on Abruzzo, my native region of Italy, a land of colorful festivals, brooding traditions, gargantuan banquets, and ancient superstitions, where the accidental spilling of oil is a sure sign of tragedy. I also wanted to share the experience of growing up in a family of good cooks where food was an expression of love and caring
. Many dishes from Abruzzo, such as maccheroni alla chitarra ("guitar" macaroni), brodetto di pesce (fish stew), and porchetta (roast pig), have, of course, traveled. But most of them are still the treasured secrets of families. They travel no further than the next generation
. My family gave me a passion for food. The rituals that were practiced in my grandmother's kitchen are still with me. All this has remained part of my life, and cooking for family and friends is a constant joy for me. To celebrate and make people happy are the reasons why I wrote this book." Praise for Anna Teresa Callen's Menus for Pasta: "A culinary gem for everyone who wants to bring the true flavor of Italy into their home." Paula Wolfert, author of Mediterranean Grains and Greens "Of course one can eat pasta as a main course. It is how my mother would serve us pasta every Wednesday and Sunday when I was a boy. And this wonderful evocative book richly demonstrates that pasta can indeed be the centerpiece of an elegant meal. Bravo pasta, brava Anna Teresa!" Fred Feretti, columnist for Gourmet magazine
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Italian Cooking Teacher.......2006-09-28
has written this most engaging book about her childhood and the food of the enchanting land where she grew up. The stories are wonderful, and the recipes are delicioso! I realize I'm prejudiced, as I am one of the folks who urged Anna Teresa to write this book. BUT I think it's a real triumph, and one you will enjoy reading as well as cooking from. She writes from a teacher's perspective, so all your questions will be answered within the body of the recipe.
Hmmmmm, I think I'll make porchetta this weekend!
Interesting mix or recipes and stories.......2003-04-25
The book is fun to read, and the author does an excellent job in relating her early family life in Italy to the recipes. Even if you don't use many of the recipes, it might be worth purchasing for the stories. However, the book loses one star because of its lack of photos. Some of the recipes can be difficult to prepare without knowing what the end product should look like. The author loses another star for raising my hackle in the way she expresses some of her opinions. In particular, she rants about all pasta salads, calling them "unsuitable." I completely disagree. If you are looking for a book on very traditional Abruzzesi food, proudly untouched by the last several decades, this is a good book. The author also writes about other regions a bit, which I thought was a nice touch.
A great book!.......2001-02-16
This is a wonderful collection of classic Italian cooking, and much the way my grandmother used to cook. It includes recipes for things she used to make but that I hadn't been able to find previously. There are perhaps a couple of hundred recipes, and all of them are easy to follow. The instructions don't carry on for pages, which is good, because I don't like recipes that are so lengthy I get overwhelmed. The author, who was raised in Abruzzi, includes insight with every recipe, answering questions about Italian cooking and cooking in general. For instance, I could never understand how my earlier attempts at making pasta failed, until I read about the difference in egg sizes; now my pasta is great. The book is interspersed with accounts of her childhood in Italy, adding a more personal feel to it. Maybe the only drawback for the uninitiated cook is that there are no pictures of the recipes to entice you, but don't let that stop you.
A Good Selection If You Enjoy Regional Italian Food.......2000-11-24
This is a very well written book, and Ms. Callen has shared much more than just regional recipes. Although the book is packed full of traditional recipes from the Abbruzzo region, by reading this book you also get feel for Abruzzo and it's people. As the owner of my own culinary website Italian Food Forever, and someone who collects cookbooks as a hobby, I enjoy reading about the regional specialties found in Italy, and found this book a real treasure. The recipes I tried were easy to follow, and for the most part called for easy to find ingredients. My only disappointment lay in the fact there were no food photos. Apart from a a few family illustrations, I found the lack of images to be a downfall. The recipes all sounded so delicious, photos of them would have been a great asset. If you enjoy regional Italian cuisine, this book is for you.
An Essential Book for Italian Food Lovers.......2000-06-16
This is a wonderful book. The recipes are clear, they work and everyone loves them. Of all the books I consult, the recipes in this one are the ones my guests always beg to eat and to know the source of. Flavors are clear and clean and authentic. Most ingredients are easy to find and even novice cooks will not find most recipes too difficult. I have taken classes with Anna Teresa, and the book conveys her warmth, good humor and love of cooking much as she does in class. This book is a real winner!

Book Description
Accompanying the complete text of Sense and Sensibility are a variety of supporting materials, including selected literary works in the sentimental tradition; the text of Love and Freindship (sic), Austen's youthful burlesque of the sentimental literature of the time; and an excerpt from Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. In addition, a selection of Romantic poems demonstrates parallels between Austen's novel and the works of her male contemporaries.
Customer Reviews:
From the Editor.......2004-05-27
"Sense and Sensibility," Jane Austen's first published novel (1811), tells the intertwined stories of two contrasting sisters, the lively, passionate, impulsive Marianne and the reserved, self-disciplined, dutiful Elinor. Both experience love, heartache, and eventual happiness in marriage, and both have their beliefs and value systems tested. A host of memorable, comic minor characters combine with the principal heroines and heroes to develop a tale that is both lively and thought provoking, humorous and psychologically astute. Anyone who has ever struggled with conflicts between spontaneity and caution, heart and head, can identify with the central characters of this novel.
This edition of "Sense and Sensibility" includes a number of helpful supplementary materials that enhance the reader's understanding and appreciation of the novel. Excerpts from contemporary texts clarify the historical context of the terms "sense" and "sensibility." Among the works included are selections from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther," a classic example of the novel of sensibility, and Maria Edgeworth's "Letters of Julia and Caroline," an earlier novel of contrasting female characters, in this case two friends, one of whom is sensible and the other romantic and impractical. The edition also includes the whole of Jane Austen's "Love and Freindship" (sic), a hilarious parody of sentimental fiction written when Austen was fourteen. Besides background materials, the volume includes four essays from recent critics that represent a range of different interpretations of the novel.
Finally, the introduction provides useful biographical and historical information and outlines a variety of critical approaches to the novel: some critics believe Elinor is clearly the favored sister and the sense she embodies the preferred value system; some critics by contrast believe the novel either consciously or unconsciously betrays sympathy for Marianne and the sensibility she represents; and other critics believe the novel advocates a middle ground between sense and sensibility, according to which both sisters need to abandon aspects of their initial beliefs and adopt attitudes and behaviors associated with the other sibling. "Sense and Sensibility" has sometimes been criticized for being too didactic and formulaic, but those who read the novel along with the various background, critical, and introductory essays in this volume should discover a work that is richly complex, ambiguous, and many-sided in its exploration of the competing values of emotion and reason, spontaneity and restraint, and personal fulfillment versus duty to others.

Customer Reviews:
Love it!.......2006-08-13
I really like this book. It really gives in depth information about things that really help mom's in their daily lives - not just the generic overview but actual tips & suggestions. I love it!!!
Great Tips!.......2004-03-04
This is a wonderful book! It provides alot of useful tips.
Fabulous tips!.......2003-05-02
As a mom of twins, I loved all the great tips in this book--whenever I'm facing a new issue from fear of monsters at night to dueling temper tantrums, I pick the book and have come up with some really effective solutions. It's great to have all these tips in one place!
Loved the Insider tips!.......2002-09-04
As a mom of two young kids, I spend most of my time racing around trying to keep our house from looking as if it were hit by a cyclone, convincing my youngest to expand her tastes beyond spaghetti or macaroni and cheese, and breaking up the beginning of raging sibling fights over everything from toys to who picks the next video to watch. It's exhausting, and hard to believe that life at home could be so much harder than my days at the office. A number of good friends recommended the Mom Book to me, and then I heard the author on the radio. I love being able to grab the Mom Book and come up at a glance with great ideas such as temporary toy jail above the TV for all the toys being fought over, a "no-fault" policy that involves both kids taking a breather as a way to curtail sibling fights, or having a "who can crunch the carrot the loudest?" contest as a sneaky way to get my daughter to munch on a vegetable. This book gets my enthusiastic "Mom in the trenches" thumbs up.
Great Ideas! Every family should own.......2002-05-27
This is a great reference book and full of great ideas! The kind that you say, "why didn't i think of that??"! I leave it out all the time because there is always something new to learn and there is more information than any family could ever ask for.
I think you should order two, one for you and one for a friend!

Book Description
Born to an unconventional, free-spirited artist mother and an eminent paleontologist father, Margaret Matthew chose a career as an artist specializing in restorations of extinct animals. She began her career at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City drawing fossil bones, and there she met her husband, the noted paleontologist Edwin (Ned) Colbert.
Charming the Bones portrays Margaret's life as the wife of a famous man, the mother of five sons, and, later in her life, as a respected restoration artist, illustrator, and sculptor.
Margaret's paintings, drawings, and sculptures grace museums worldwide and enable the general public, as well as professional paleontologists, to visualize extinct creatures.
Customer Reviews:
Portraiture, A Lost Art Revived.......2004-01-16
Let me just say right off that only about ten books in the world get five stars from me, so four stars is a great compliment and a sign that Charming the Bones is well worth investigating. It begins as true portraiture, an artform nearly as lost as the dinosaurs that the book's heroine spends so much time illustrating, but toward the final third, the book's focus shifts to that of the anthropologically sensitive travelogue. Aside from the obvious pleasures of dropping in on Georgia O'Keefe and touring Europe, I wound up sampling--and all but participating in--cultures I'd never heard of from remote corners of India and South Africa (during apatheid). As seen through Margaret's eyes and Ann Elliot's expert pen, every detail is rendered vividly and with a keen attention to scientific detail. The results are both beautiful and readable. Elliot's book takes on the business of setting down a life in print, no easy task, and she succeeds on all fronts. Reading it makes you yearn to travel more, hunt down fossils of your own, and dig out the brushes and try once more to paint that elusive masterpiece.
