Book Description
Throughout the ages philosophers have examined their own lives in an attempt both to find some meaning and to explain the roots of their philosophical perspectives. This volume is an introduction to philosophical autobiography, a rich but hitherto ignored literary genre that questions the self, its social context, and existence in general. The author analyzes representative narratives from antiquity to postmodernity, focusing in particular on three case studies: the autobiographies of St. Augustine, Rousseau, and Sartre. Through the study of these exemplary texts, philosophical reflection on the self emerges as a valid alternative to Freudian psychoanalysis and as a way of promoting self-renewal and change.
Customer Reviews:
Philosophical Psychoanalysis Then and Now.......2003-08-30
This book can change your life, if you would like it (or not)!
It presents the genre philosophical autobiography as a new philosophical literary type. It is a comprehensive source book which discovers the history and developments of recent research in this genre, rendering about 200 references to philosophers with an autobiographic life. Representative narratives investigated include the writings of Plato, Aurelius, Abelard, Al-Ghazali, Dante, Erasmus, Hume, Mill, Kierkegaard, Russell, Gibran, Simone Weil, Hazel Barnes, Alfred Tauber, and others. Extensively examined are the autobiographical works of Augustine, Rousseau, and Sartre. Unlike most literary and psychoanalytic interpretations of life narratives, the author comprehends the philosopher's life from a critical-philosophical perspective, or uses an alternative philosophical psychoanalytic method.

Bogus Reviews.......2006-07-29
Notice the verbage used by the first 12 of 18 reviewers. Pretty similar. And these were all written in about a 7 day period of July-August 2002. Bogus reviewers.
Read through it for yourself at your local bookstore, then decide.
My favorite parenting resource!.......2003-04-14
I don't usually write reviews, but this book is so great that it deserves another review (even though everyone else who has reviewed this book so far thinks it's great too)! Dr. Cathryn has such a wonderful way of writing, it almost feels like she is having a dialogue with you. I found that as I was reading, I would have a mental question, and low and behold, within the next section she would address it, just like she knew what I was thinking. Her advise is practical and realistic, and she presents it in a very non-judgemental way, which makes it very easy to read all of the different sections, even those that may not seem applicable (yet!).
I originally bought the book to address sleep issues, but have been very pleased by all of the other issues she addresses. She provides very simple instructions to follow to correct this all too common problem. And they worked!! She also explains the why's and possible consequences of not changing certain behaviors, which is enlightening and certainly motivating.
Thanks Dr. Cathryn for providing such a great resource for new parents!
This book solved my problem.......2003-04-07
As a young parent it is often hard to know what to do when you encounter discipline problems. After all kids don't come with a instruction manual, at least not until now. The convenient format of this book has provided the quik answers to difficult problems that I needed. This book is funny accurate and easy to read. I would reccoment this book to all new parents or even to those who have parenting experience. The parents problem solver worked for me, it taught me not only about my child but about myself.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2003-03-23
This is a great book for parents, teachers, grandparents, babysitters, anyone who lives or works with children. Dr Cathryn gives sensible advice for anyone who wants to handle situations in a manner that benefits the child. I've used Dr Tobin's advice with my Grade Two students, and I find I am yelling less at my kids, and spending more time having fun teaching them. Thanks Dr Tobin. How about a video next?
An A-Z Amazing Book.......2003-03-23
As a parent of twin four-year-olds boys, I am grateful to have found a book that gives me straight answers, without making me feel guilty. Dr Tobin has given me a tool---the 3Rs---- that I can use anytime, anywhere with any kind of problem. I am going to buy this book for all my expecting friends!

Will make you want to take a safari.......2002-07-11
I really have enjoyed this book. It gives you an insight into African cooking and the beautiful scenery. I had the pleasure of meeting Josie Stow at Tswalu and sampled some of the recipes in the book. They are incredible. Most of the items are easy to prepare and the photos will make you want to go there!
GET THIS WONDERFUL BOOK RIGHT THIS SECOND.......2000-03-12
The book is simply stunning, I was most impressed with the food and images. I reccomend the termite mound pizza, although with all the termites it isn't really a veggie dish, you can always pick them off....(he he ha ha)
Really enjoyed it. inpsired me to go to Africa
From a South African.......2000-03-08
As a South African and having spent time in the USA, I tried to think of ingredients etc that one would need if you were living outside of Africa, most seem easy to obtain. It's a beautiful book both in recipes and photos.Being a professional photographer it's a fun book to look at for the photos as well as different style of cooking. Most recipe books are static and don't motivate me into purchasing it, but this one caught me. It has a great African feel. Worth buying.

Customer Reviews:
Super faith inspired design........2006-01-18
After quilting for several years, this was my first attempt at hand applique. Rosemary's instructions were clear and concise. This faith based quilt pattern was amazing, with blocks that went from simple to VERY challenging. Your choice of 16 out of 20 blocks to make a queen sized quilt. If you are looking for a book of patterns to use to express your faith in God and the Bible, then look no more. You could easily expand on her ideas of a queen sized quilt, and use your favorites to make a wall quilt, or just utilize the lovely center medallion. My Biblical Blocks quilt has been in 10 quilt shows, and 1 special exhibit so far. It has been the quilt I am most proud of. YOU GOTTA GET THIS BOOK!
Biblical Blocks.......2002-03-09
The instructions for block construction in this book are very good. This could be a very complicated quilt to make, and Rosemary has made it easy. Our new quilt group at church did this as a first project. Except for two of us, all were first time quilters. They were all able to cut and assemble blocks at home with ease. We chose other fabrics than what Rosemary suggests and the quilts turned out beautiful!
BIBLICAL BLOCKS.......2001-06-14
Although the quilt blocks were pretty, I found the choice of fabrics required rather restrictive. Also the alternate squares were not what I personally like.

Book Description
Cougar Annie's Garden tells the haunting tale of a five-acre garden in the wilderness of Vancouver Island's West Coast. Surrounded by rainforest and mountains, inaccessible and remote, this garden has endured for over eighty years. It is powerful with story, rich with legend and history, and Margaret Horsfield's book brings all these elements together in her critically-acclaimed book. Cougar Annie's Garden has been widely acclaimed in Canada since its publication.
In 1915 Ada Annie Rae-Arthur came to this part of the coast as a pioneer settler. She set to work clearing the land. What emerged was no ordinary stump farm out in the bush, it was a vision, a dream and a passion. Slowly, over the years, a garden of strange, mesmerising beauty took shape in its clearing in the deep forest, featuring hundreds of varieties of imported shrubs and trees and perennials.
Wily and stubborn , Ada Annie operated a mail-order nursery garden; she also ran a general store and a post office from her home. She bore eight of her eleven children here, and she outlived and outworked four husbands. A crack shot and a skilled trapper, she became a cougar bounty hunter, killing over seventy of the big cats. She became known as Cougar Annie. Until she was in her mid-nineties, she remained in her beloved garden,
Many types of West coast lore, many strands of history combine in this book to weave together Cougar Annie's story. Many tales are told of the grim courage, blind hope and bitter losses that have shaped history here.
Time plays ironic tricks on this isolated part of the coast. Failed enterprises lie rotting in the bush. The population has diminished. Settlements and homesteads have been abandoned. The ver landscape has been radically altered because of the logging in this part of Clayoquot Sound. People have left and dreams have died, all around here.
Cougar Annie's Garden tells of a dream that has survived, and lives on. Against all odds, this remarkable garden has outlived its equally remarkable owner. Although it was radically overgrown at the time of her death in 1985, it has now been completely restored, and now enters a new era. Thriving with fresh energy and beauty, the garden stands sentinel on this part of the coast, an indomitable survivor.
The non-profit Boat Basin Foundation is taking over ownership and administration of the garden, its aim being to preserve the garden and to establish a site for botanical field study in Clayoquot Sound. Construction on study cabins has now begun and the first group of students, from San Francisco, has already spent time at the garden on a study trip.
This is Margaret Horsfield's fourth book. It features art work by Takao Tanabe and Briony Penn and a foreword by Peter C. Newman. In the spring of 2000 this book received the Roderick Haig-Brown award for best book about British Columbia during the past year; it was also shortlisted for the Hubert Evans non-fiction prize and it was runner-up for the Lieutenant-Governor's medal for historical writing about British Columbia.
The book is a full colour production, with over 100 colour pictures and 50 black and whites.
Customer Reviews:
good fathering, fine writing.......2005-04-03
Mark O'Connell tells it how it is. Using his own biography, his admirable relationship with his wife and his love and respect for his children and patients, we are treated to a thoughtful invitation to think with him about men, fathering and life in the family. How a man uses his aggression as a constituent of his authority in the family and how he recognizes and values his wife's role in its admissablilty and in its modulation is a core concept which O'Connell advances. This is a book about love between spouses and between parents and children. it is also a book about the ways in which sexuality and aggression are shaped in a responsible and therefore integrated way by good enough parents. Ultimately then, it is a book which is crucially concerned with how men bring their essential maleness to fruitfully and productively effect the next generation's capacity to love, to play and to work.
A Voice We Need to Hear.......2005-04-01
It's been downright confusing, being a father, these past few decades. Most of us were sons of largely "absent" fathers without suitable role models. Sure, we had lots of advice...on one side from the Rosemond radical conservatives and on the far distant other the many and persuasive voices of the "SNAG (Sensitive New Age Guy)" movement. Not that their advice had no merit; but many of us just weren't comfortable with the notion that men were, well, imperfect women. Finally and refreshingly out of the wilderness comes the voice of Dr. Mark O'Connell with what resonates as real help and insight for us men trying to use our male differences and find our footing as effective Dads. He brings many relevant and poignant examples from his psychotherapy practice to illustrate his points. His (anonymous) clients are almost like fictional characters and together present a sort of universal parent with all their human flaws, challenges and, sometimes, triumphs. It's impossible not to see parts of oneself in these folks. He weaves their stories with his own parental adventures and misadventures in an engaging almost seductive writing style that makes an incredibly instructive book a totally enjoyable reading experience. If you're looking for a simple list of "to do's" for Dads, don't buy this book. If you're looking for a real, honest presentation of meaty topics...authority, discipline, aggression, violence, sexuality, safety, control...the real issues men and parents must deal with to be effective, then you've come to the right place.
Useful and profound.......2005-04-01
The Good Father is a life-changing book. Using real lives and real stories (including his own), O'Connell shows men (and women) coming to terms with their pasts as they embark on the project of becoming good parents. The book avoids prefab advice; instead we get detailed examples and straight talk on hard matters. The writer tackles all the big topics, from discipline (spank? don't spank?) to the challenges that time, and teenagers, represent. Especially useful is the frank discussion of aggression and eroticism in family life; O'Connell makes the point that physical contact is necessary and important, in the right ways, at the right times, between fathers and their children. The stories are compelling, beautifully written, and informed by a deep respect for the complex realities of people's lives. You can learn more about being a good father from this book than any laundry list of do's and don'ts will ever teach you.
A gem.......2005-03-30
The Good Father, unlike most parenting books, doesn't insult the reader's intelligence by oversimplifying or reducing complex questions into sound bites. The writer's thought-provoking positions on crucial topics such as authority, discipline, and sexuality are grounded in research and prior literature, and they come alive through the telling of his clients' stories and his own life experiences. Dr. O'Connell's writing is beautiful -- almost lyrical at times. This book is a "must" for anyone who wants to be a thoughtful parent.
Horrible.......2005-03-30
I am about halfway through this book and am about to throw it out. So far, he has gone through a history of the psychology of mothering and fathering and tried to relate personal and client experiences. I didn't want a psychology textbook, I just wanted the author's insite on fatherhood. After reading half the book, the only conclusion he has drawn is that men are more aggressive than women and are different in their parenting styles. I already knew this and didn't need all the psychoanalysis to prove the point.
The organization of the book is awful - it has no chapters. You have no idea what each section is about. It rambles on somewhat aimlessly (at least so far). It is certainly not something you would want as light reading. I would think that only a psychology student or professor would enjoy reading it. I will probably finish the book in the hopes of gaining something that may help me be a better father, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Book Description
The Book of Kells and the Art of Illumination brings together the Gospel of St. Mark from the 1200-year-old Irish masterpiece with a selection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts which demonstrate the legacy of Kells throughout the centuries, both in terms of Gospel illustration and of the illuminated book.
Not only does the Book of Kells testify to the vitality of Celtic art in the Early Middle Ages, but its fortunes also reflect the turbulent nature of the period in which it was created. This was an age in which the British Isles were ravaged by Viking raids, and monastic settlements, the cultural heart of the country, uprooted. Yet, against these odds, the Book of Kells survived. In later times it suffered further disturbances, and in the middle of the 17th century, during Ireland's battles with Cromwell, it was transferred from the ruined parish of Kells to Trinity College, Dublin, where ever since it has had a secure and distinguished home.
