Book Description
Hermann Pfrengle's World War II memoir describes in remarkable and breathtaking detail the unorthodox life and travails of an adolescent German boy on the war-scarred home front. As a member of the Jungvolk, a group loosely associated under the Hitler Youth organization, he helped construct the Siegfried Line, dodged bombs and cleared rubble with civilian defense, and worked in the war effort. A high-school student near Mainz on the Rhine River until his school was bombed, he rose in leadership positions while watching his country's fortunes deteriorate.
In March 1945, as the war neared an end, at age 15, he and some of his Jungvolk unit were called to active duty in paramilitary roles with the Wehrmacht, hoping to stop the rapid advance of the American forces nearing the Rhine. Seeing combat, death, and destruction firsthand, Pfrengle served in supply, courier, and flak helper support roles during the Wehrmacht's retreat into Czechoslovakia. He and his regular army comrades came to fear the fanatical SS as much as U.S. bullets. Two days before Germany surrendered, General George S. Patton's troops captured him, and for three weeks he was a prisoner of war. On his release, the Americans admonished him and his home town buddies to forget that you have been Hitler soldiers. By virtue of his seniority, maturity, and sense of responsibility, he became their leader.
It took them two months to work their way home, encountering the mayhem that was a defeated and depleted Germany. Mostly on foot and also illegally hopping trains, and among thousands of displaced persons, military police, victorious but kind American soldiers, and bewildered citizens, he foraged for sustenance, shelter, clothing, and medical care. The remarkable, passionate story of his journey back to his parents, who had not heard from him in four months, is an unforgettable account of courage, ingenuity, and perseverance at any age.
The book focuses on people and human-interest subjects, not the war itself, supplemented by several maps and personal photographs. To aid the reader, the authors provide an introduction to the German involvement in the war, Wehrmacht organization, the land campaigns in Europe, and a glossary, index, and bibliography.
Hermann Pfrengle's memoir adds an in-depth perspective to life on the German home front and the service of youth to the Third Reich, views of World War II history often improperly treated by historians.

Book Description
Sarah Hutton sets Anne Conway in her historical and philosophical context in this intellectual biography of one of the very first English women philosophers. Hutton traces Conway's intellectual development in relation to friends and associates, and documents her interest in religion--which extended beyond Christian orthodoxy to Quakerism, Judaism and Islam. Her book offers insight into the personal life of a very private woman, and the richness of seventeenth-century intellectual culture.

A complete Guide for Women with Lupus
The Lupus Handbook for women provides all the information a woman needs to understand the disease, its diagnosis, and the treatment. It will answer her questions and help her to work with her doctor in managing the disease.
Rheumatologist Dr. Robin J. Dibner, in clear and supportive terms, tells women what they need to know, including:
* What lupus is, how it affects the body, and why women are particularly vulnerable to it (90 percent of Americans with lupus are women)
* The three different types of lupus (discoid lupus, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], and drug-induced lupus)
* How to get a correct diagnosis and understand the tests (because the symptoms are often mistaken for those of other illnesses, it can take three to five years to get a definitive diagnosis)
* The pros and cons of the various conventional drugs and therapies
* What the new, experimental treatments are, whom they are for, and what their risks and benefits are
* How to use stress control, diet, and exercise to prevent flare-ups and maintain health
* How to keep lupus from interfering with a normal dating and sex life and with the development of healthy relationships
* How to have a safe, though high-risk, pregnancy
The Lupus Handbook for Women also includes information on the major lupus research centers, support groups, and other sources of help and information.
Customer Reviews:
Good for Couples.......2006-08-28
This book was an excellent source of information. While Daniel Wallaces' book is by far the best written on Lupus, Ms. Dibner writes with passion, and she offers good advice. I read this in one sitting.
Very Good informative book.......2002-11-06
I thought this was a good book for anyone who is trying to learn more about lupus. I have had the disease for many years, and still found things I was not sure of. I would reccomend it to others for sure. I would also recommend Stolen Moments, as it shows someone living with lupus in a differnt way. Both are excellent books for lupus patient to read.
Lupus Handbook For Women.......2001-10-16
A comprehensive book, although it could go into more depth in areas. The page numbers are on the binding side of each page, which makes it difficult to thumb through to find anything.
A Great Help.......2000-05-22
I borrowed this book from the library and I just had to buy it. I have read a lot about lupus since my diagnosis 4 years ago. This is the most useful resource I have found yet. It explains the disease and possible causes, and also gives information on the tests that lupus patients routinely undergo.
Good Book.......1999-11-28
Although this is a non-fiction book, it was very helpful in understanding the disease. Another book that does even a better job of this is the ficitonal novel, Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher . ..Ms Fisher has lupus and wrote this book with her heart! A fantastic read/ edited by her lupus specialist. ..It is enertaining, and captures every emotion known to men and women. And excellent book, meant to be shared. For sure you will love it.
Book Description
In Jeff Nathan’s Family Suppers, the world-renowned chef and television host of New Jewish Cuisine delivers exactly what kosher home cooks everywhere have been asking for: creative recipes easy enough for the weeknight table. In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut cookbook, Adventures in Jewish Cooking, Jeff hangs up the professional chef’s coat to create a more casual kitchen go-to guide, simplifying steps in light of today’s busy family schedule but never sacrificing flavor or variety.
As a dad, Jeff knows all too well that family suppers require a kid-tested stamp of approval, and the recipes in this book won’t disappoint. Here are more than 125 irresistible yet eminently doable creations—Jeff’s signature modern American kosher fare with a global twist—that the whole family will enjoy, including favorites such as Four-Cheese Baked Ziti with Herbed Crumbs, Grilled Skirt Steak with Mint Chimichurri, Matzo-Crusted Chicken Strips with Honey-Mustard Dip, Spicy Oven Fries, and Tilapia Teriyaki with Stir-Fried Asian Vegetables.
The chapters are organized into unfussy, everyday menu categories: Soups, Salads, Chicken and Turkey, Meats, Fish, Vegetable Main Courses, Pasta, Side Dishes, and Desserts. Extras include a section on stocking the pantry, refrigerator, and freezer (from essentials to “could-haves”); time-saving tools; tips for keeping an organized kitchen; and, perhaps most important, ways to involve the whole family in cooking.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific: Workable and Excellent Taste.......2006-02-08
This book is excellent. This book is easier than his previous cook book ("Adventures in Jewish Cooking") but the results are equally as good. We've tried the meatloaf and the Korean Barbeque thus far, and they have been really, really good to eat.
Can't wait for him to write another book!
Sprusso from Katonah, NY.......2005-11-19
Thanks for another fabulous cookbook! I bought your first one & loved trying the diverse array of recipes. Everything came out so delicious! I look forward to doing the same with your second book. I tried my first dish last night - the cornflake crusted sea bass with salsa. I have already loved cornflake crusted chicken and was pleasantly surprised it came out so yummy with the sea bass. The corn and black bean salsa was a nice compliment to the dish. I love how you blend ingredients together to give food such wonderful flavors. Keep it up! Looking forward to Beef Stew Provencal this weekend!
Great dinners at my house.......2005-11-07
At the beginning of the school year, I promised myself that I would cook up some new, and delcious recipes for the kids and my husband. I picked up a few new cookbooks and started looking at the recipes printed in the newspaper for fresh ideas. I am so happy that I made that promise, because dinners at my house have been wonderful. I find that "Family Suppers" is an easy book to follow the recipes in. I have most of the ingredients in the pantry or fridge already. Not too much hassle at all! My morning routine is now to pick up "Family Suppers" and figure out the next new recipe to prepare.
A must have in the library.......2005-10-17
What a great book! It is no surprise that his book is as good as his television show.
Thoughtful Gift Idea.......2005-10-13
I loved the first book and gave some as gifts to my friends. They are still thanking me a year later. So I just brought the new cookbook and plan to buy some more as gifts. It is the perfect Gift.

Book Description
Salvia is derived from the Latin word salvare, "to heal," and for centuries salvias have been valued for their medicinal and culinary qualities. Salvias, commonly known as sages, grow throughout temperate and subtropical parts of the world, from sea level to altitudes of more than 11,000 feet (3400 meters). They occur in many forms: perennial, biennial, annual herbs, and evergreen or deciduous shrubs. These amazingly varied plants are also noteworthy for their remarkable resistance to pests and diseases, their drought tolerance — and their beautiful flowers.
Following the great success of Betsy Clebsch's first book on salvias comes this expanded edition, The New Book of Salvias: Sages for Every Garden. Betsy has added more than 50 new species and cultivars such as Salvia castanea and S. recurva, bringing the total to approximately 150 beautiful, gardenworthy species and significant hybrids. She documents them alphabetically and includes botanical descriptions, information on habit, blooming cycle, recommended companion plants, and delightful historical tidbits of discovery and usage. Nearly 100 new photos and illustrations make this new edition even more attractive than its predecessor.
In her ardent pursuit of salvias, Clebsch has explored the wild to collect plants and seeds to test in her California garden. The resulting wealth of cultural information in The New Book of Salvias ensures that our gardens will not only be exquisitely aromatic but also wonderfully picturesque.
Customer Reviews:
New book on Salvias.......2005-09-08
Found the book interesting but limited since it was written promarily for the US gardener. Would have appreciated more illustrations. Nevertheless a worthwhile addition to the library.
Adding over fifty new species and cultivars.......2003-11-15
Betsy Clebsch's New Book Of Salvias is a winner: it discusses the varied plants notable for their drought tolerance and beautiful flowers, and expands upon a prior edition in adding over fifty new species and cultivars. An alphabetical arrangement makes it easy for the gardener to locate the hybrid and species and includes botanical descriptions, habitat and blooming information, and background history.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Betsy Clebsch,a true plantswoman & superb salvia researcher.......2001-03-08
This book is an excellent reference for many salvias. Colorful pictures compliment a terrifically popular release from Timber Press. I met Betsy in 1992, when I had a wonderful opportunity to join a friend who at the time, who invited me to join him when visiting her large garden settings up at her home, several miles inland from the ocean, and situated in a lovely valley in the foothills of northern California. A truly devoted researcher, and a well-known plant researcher, you can always find Betsy at any plant symposium that went on in northern or southern California at the various arboreta and botanic gardens. I will never forget that one afternoon, as we helped fix a light lunch with her in her lovely bright and airy kitchen. With almost floor to ceiling windows surrounding us on the south wall, streams of light continually cascaded around us as we walked about the room. Nevin Smith and Betsy discussed the many salvias in her upper garden, as we looked just outside the house to the west. She began to mention several salvias from Mexico, and remarked how she was eager to add more to her collection from that part of the world. Then, she carefully took out a large natural wood box, and as she opened it, a huge stack of receipe cards almost spilled out all over the counter. Each card contained many years of notes, on different well-known, and also rare, unusual and little-known salvias. She remarked how full the box was getting. Nevin said "Well, you'll just have to write a book!" Betsy grinned and looked down shyly. We knew it was just a matter of time. And this IS that book. And we look forward to her writing more. And re: another reviewer of her book, about the fact the photos are all grouped in the center of the book. That is sometimes, the choice of the publisher and in this case I feel it is a good one, because when one reads the book, it is quite easy to go on reading for several pages and note more than one type of salvia, and then look up and reference to several photographs at a time. Plus, as this truly is a great reference book. As a commercial photographer of twenty years, I feel the photos will stay in better shape when the book may travel outside, into the garden. It is certainly not anything that I see detracts from the data the writer has provided, and the quality of photography on her submissions are high quality, indeed. Thanks Betsy, I love your book. I may be managing my own nursery soon, and this will be one of my main reference books for the gardening public to hear about, as well as have an opportunity to purchase on our retail book shelves. I am honored to be able to publicly comment on the dedicated work you have done over the years, and how this is such a great accomplishment to bring this work to share with so many gardeners. We all eagerly await the next one! Chris Bryan, Horticultural Video Producer/Commercial Photographer
Could have been better organized.......2000-08-16
this book was somewhat helpful, but I found it a little disappointing. The pictures are not with each plant description, which would have been more convenient, but are in the middle of the book. The author suggests that you could buy a color guide from the Royal Horticultural Society. I e mailed them and found out that they want 125.00 for it! They can keep it.
Outstanding information for American Salvia growers.......2000-05-29
A gem of a book for all those who love or grow salvias in North America. Not only are the descriptions excellent, but so are most of the photographs. As a plus, the author suggests companion plants to use with specific varieties. This is a 'must' for all lovers of salvias.

Love and Logic Parenting for Early Childhood Six Months to Five Years written and read by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D. Has your sweet, innocent baby turned into a terrorizing toddler? Learn practical and loving methods that not only apply to the very young child, but to four- and five-year-olds as well.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource if you want a jumpstart to raising responsible, safe kids without all the power struggles........2006-08-18
Not sure what B. Beaux was talking about. I am an agnostic so I am pretty aware of that kind of thing. I was also a teacher. Not only does Love and Logic work in the classroom but it does amazing things with my kids. I have 2 toddlers and I think the Love and Logic books and videos are an indespensible resource. It seems to me that the previous reviewer was just looking for a forum to rant about something totally unrelated to these books. He also wasn't reviewing this book - I guess some people will actually mislead people to try and get their voice heard. If click on "see my other reviews" under his name you will see that he has reviewed every book in the Love and Logic series with this rhetoric that is based on complete ignorance. Charles Fay and Foster Cline (founders of Love and Logic) are from Evergreen Colorado - not Colorado Springs and have nothing to do with the whole "family first" thing. There is no affiliation whatsoever. Again, not sure what the other reviewer was talking about - but it is a shame that he may turn people away from a resource that is the most effective tool I have come across to raise children who are responsible, able to make choices effectively, have great self-esteem, and to avoid all the arguments and power struggles that come with parenting.
Doesn't work for everyone.......2002-01-19
Evaluate your child's personality before buying this. I have heard that it works like a charm for other kids, but my daughter is just too active and direct intervention works better than time-outs. I do like its main message--don't let your kids walk all over you and don't be afraid to discipline (positively, not spanking). If you feel your child will respond to time-outs, this is a good resource. However, I found the Positive Discipline series to be more effective for my child.
Great common-sense approach to child-rearing........2002-01-16
This audio cassette is a wonderful, no-nonsense approach to child-rearing. The narrators have soothing, pleasant voices and know what they are talking about. There is no better way to deal with children than this way: I have 2 children that strike awe in others because of how well-behaved they are (ages 3 years and 16 months). I also have a 14 year old step-daughter who is wonderful and mindful, and who has been raised the "love and logic" way. The only way you are going to be "insulted" by this audio cassette (as another reviewer implied) is if you recognize yourself in the anecdotes and are defensive about it. If this is so, perhaps some therapy of your own will help you learn why you waste energy being defensive of parenting practices that don't work, instead of being open enough to try common-sense stategies that will help you be the best parent you can be.
Love and Logic for Toddlers.......2001-06-14
This cassette seems mostly to reiterate the strategies in the Parenting with Love and Logic book. It gave minimum strategies and often made fun of common parenting mistakes. This cassette could be quite insulting if you have a difficult toddler.
If You Have a Toddler You Need These Tapes.......1999-08-10
If you find yourself becoming frustrated with your little one, these tapes are for you. As a teacher I know Cline and Fay's methods work, I have no doublt they will also help me raise my son. These first years are critical and I want to do everything I can to help him be a responsible person and a delight to be around. I know you want the same for your child. I truly think you will be pleased if you listen to these tapes and give their ideas a try.

Book Description
Here is the most comprehensive, detailed and accurate story of these exotic aircraft ever written. It covers all manufacturers and their planes and provides important information on armament, flying units and more. Line iIlustrations in standard scales (1/48 and 1/72) make this a must purchase for modelers as well.
Customer Reviews:
Finest example of aviation hystory publication.......2007-02-03
Excellent book. Comprehensive research, good photographs and scale drawings, exhaustive list of Austro-Hungarian aircraft designed, produced and flown during the First World War. Authors decided to remove colour profiles from the second edition on the basis on doubts about colour interpretation. Nevertheless, this book is amongst the finest examples of aviation history publications.
The Anatomy of Failure.......2005-05-21
Why buy an expensive book about the air force of a country that doesn't exist anymore and was already in a state of terminal decline when the Wright Brothers first flew? For one thing, the Dual Monarchy produced a surprising number of airplane designs with interesting technical quirks (like a V-12 engine mounted sideways and driving outboard propellers from both ends of the crankshaft). For another, it had several brilliant minds in its technical branch (like von Karman who later created the Jet Propulsion Lab).
But as a student of technical and managerial failure in aerospace, I found the most interesting parts of this book to be the discussions of the disastrous mistakes that the Habsburg bureaucrats made in design and production of aircraft. Just about any mistake that could be made was made, sometimes several times -- and in the space of only about 8 years.
Politicalization of procurement decisions. Incompetent design by Herr Doctorprofessors obsessed with numerical theory. Shoddy workmanship by conscripted peasants. Blind conservatism of an entrenched aristocracy. Monopoly capitalists organizing a secret cartel. Ethnic quotas in the allocation of contracts and scarce materials. This book is practically a text on how to wreck a whole industry and loose a war. Everybody at NASA should read it.

Book Description
100 drawings, including 16 in full color, by master satirist and accomplished draftsman George Grosz (1893-1959). First published in 1923 but suppressed, the collection offers an unsparing vision of human nakedness, lust, greed and cruelty. The 16 watercolors reveal artist’s perception with particular clarity.
Customer Reviews:
An expressionist masterpiece.......2005-02-11
Grosz created a gallery of archetypes representing the corrupt underbelly of post-World War I Germany. His wit is biting, his imagery striking, his vision acute, as he examines the results of an insane, lost war and a draconian peace imposed by victors intent on punishing rather than reconstructing an enemy who might have been turned toward more democratic ways by understanding rather than retribution. We are caught up in the demoralization he portrays with the poignant knowledge that a far greater corruption of Germany and of Europe, generally, would be created by a later Nazi regime which brilliantly exploited the moral degeneracy we see in this masterpiece of social criticism.
Art's masterpiece.......2000-05-11
Grosz shows us the complex nature of the human being. In a book full of prostitutes, nazis, animals and more you will discover the great "line" and "style" of a german master.

Book Description
This acclaimed autobiography by one of the twentieth century's greatest satirical artists is as much a graphic portrait of Germany in chaos after the Treaty of Versailles as it is a memoir of a remarkable artist's development. Grosz's account of a world gone mad is as acute and provocative as the art that depicts it, and this translation of a work long out of print restores the spontaneity, humor, and energy of the author's German text. It also includes a chapter on Grosz's experience in the Soviet Union--omitted from the original English-language edition--as well as more writings about his twenty-year self-imposed exile in America, and a fable written in English.
