Book Description
Captain George W. Alexander was a controversial figure in Richmond during the Civil War, honored as a hero and condemned as a cruel prison superintendent. He was appointed Provost Marshall and put in charge of Castle Thunder in 1862, after escaping imprisonment at Fort McHenry. At his Confederate prison in Richmond, he oversaw prisoners of all types, including Confederates, women, slaves, Federal deserters, and spies.
This biography traces his entire life from his career in the U.S. Navy and the voyage with Commodore Perry to Japan, to his hiding in Canada after Lee's surrender, to his editorship of Washington DC's Sunday Gazette and death in 1895. The main body of the text concentrates on Alexander's time at Castle Thunder, but the book also explores the evolution of the prison system and the provost marshall's department, touching on unusual prisoners and escape attempts. Appendix 1 is a partial list of prisoners at Castle Thunder and when, where, and why they were arrested. Appendix 2 is a transcript of the court martial of Private John R. Jones. Appendix 3 lists prisoners sent from Camp Holmes and appendix 4 is a report of Alexander as Assistant Provost Marshall. Appendix 5 is a pamphlet published by the Republican Party National Committee; it struck at the Democratic Party by scorning its "military prison keepers."
Book Description
A startling look at one of this century's most influential philosophers, the book chronicles every stage of Foucault's personal and professional odyssey, from his early interest in dreams to his final preoccupation with sexuality and the nature of personal identity.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Expose.......2006-05-10
I read this work as part of a postmodern philosophy of the self class, and, among the esteemed company of Nietzsche and Heidegger, this book truly stands out as a great illumination of Foucault's life. The truth of the matter is, no matter whether or not you believe learning about an author adds to your understanding and enjoyment of his works, people will always want to know more. I found Miller's writing to be extremely precise and erudite without being unnecessarily technical or prosaic as biographies can sometimes be. Miller ties in Foucault's thought and philosophies to the story of his life in a way that allows one to really understand more about what Foucault was writing and why, and provides context to said works in a way that allows the reader to grasp it. Of course, reading "The Passion of Michel Foucault" isn't the same as reading the works of Foucault--nor is it a substitute--but I found it to be a fitting start--or end--to a study of the great philosopher he was.
Pure Garbage- Why Not Illuminate the Man's Thought Instead?.......2004-05-07
This book had been recommended me, as a Foucault freak, and I must say that I was immensely disappointed. As one of the above reviewers said, he's just digging up a bunch of dirt that doesn't have much redeeming value in the end. I love S&M myself but 200 pages detailing Foucault's odd and disturbing behaviors in his personal life did nothing whatsoever to illuminate, for me, the connections between his personal life and his works. Follow Martin Heidegger's advice here: don't learn anything about the life of the philosopher you seek to know, let his works speak for him! A lot of academics were offended when Heidegger taught Plato this very way- way back in the 1920s- but believe me, it is an approach which is not yet outdated.
Passionate Truth?.......2003-03-17
This book, based on the "philosophical life" of the late French philosopher Michel Foucault, reveals the mind of a man who was, says Miller, "one of the most original---and daring---thinkers of the century." Far from being just another biography of Foucault's life, Miller's thoroughly researched project demonstrates time and again the intimate interconnection between the way a life is lived and the thinking and writing that can come from that life. But this is much more than just an intellectual history. One Can't help but share in the passion that speaks through Miller's writing, powerfully earning this book its title.
Foucault said, "...there is not a book I have written that does not grow, at least in part, out of a direct, personal experience." Each chapter of Miller's book gradually unfolds the truth of this statement, beginning with Foucault's earliest writings on madness and mental illness, through his works on knowledge and criminality, to his final opus on the nature of human sexuality. Foucault's unorthodox approach to history is made clear, revealing a revolutionary philosophy based not on structured logic and reason, but growing instead from the realm of experience, in keeping with the "great Nietzschean quest [to] become what one is."
I personally found this book quite disturbing, still accepting as I do many principles of existential humanism, especially those of free will and personal responsibility. But humanism as a whole is a philosphy Foucault and his contemporaries emphatically reject as "a diminution of man," made up of "everything in Western civilization that restricts the desire for power" and "every attitude that considers the aim of politics to be the production of happiness." In reality, says Foucault, happiness does not exist---and the happiness of man exists still less."
"The individual," he is reported to have said, "is contingent, formed by the weight of moral tradition, not really autonomous." And we "can and must make of man a negative experience, lived in the form of hate and aggression."
Somewhat stunned, I've nevertheless gained from Miller's book a new understanding of the world I live in, and of myself as part of that world. "Under the impact of civilization," he summarizes, "the will to power (Freud's 'death instinct') has been driven inward and turned against itself---creating within the human being a new inclination: to destroy himself." So, if Foucault is right, the basic truth that society tries to make humans homogenously "tame" is itself the very root of the violence and decadence of our times. If we are to point to the cause of these problems, we can only point at ourselves and at our structured ways of thinking. The problem is not what we have allowed to be, but rather what we have tried to deny and eliminate. "I am referring," says Foucault, "to all those experiences that have been rejected by our civilization, or which it accepts only within literature." This view throws the current move toward increased artistic censorship into new and unexpected relief.
For Foucault, then, the issue is the same, whatever the subject at hand: the concept of madness, our systems of language and knowledge, law and the punishment of crime, or the idea and expression of our individual sexuality. Regardless of our lifestyle, history has told us the limits of what we can be, and as individuals and as a culture we are paying a great price for believeing it. According to Foucault, the solution can only be to "free ourselves from...cultural conservatism, as well as from political conservatism. We must see our rituals for what they are: completely arbitrary things." We must find the "limits" of our thinking and learn to transcend them. Says Foucault, "...the unity of society [is] precisely that which should...be destroyed."
Miller's book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Was it all a dream?.......2001-04-25
I assume Miller is trying to demystify Foucault from the deifying result of the author function surrounding his subject. Despite Foucault's writing about it and his advocacy of a nameless or faceless book, I am aware that Foucault was aware of his author function. Books like "The Passion Michel Foucault" by Miller as well as works by Eribon and Macey serve the same function to perpetuate Foucault's own author function.
I am not convinced either that Foucault's es muss sein can be essentialized as a Nietzschean project per se. Foucault is the great synthesizer. Rather than build on his academic successes, Miller pokes around looking for dirt on Foucault using the same technique that proved successful for Foucault - the archives. Read all three biographies to get an idea of his work but make sure to read his TEXT to get an idea of his thought.

Lets Get Real about this Biography.......2000-06-10
I give 2 stars because Miller is uncritical and his premise is excellent, looking at Foucault's life as a Nietzean exercise, but his execution of it is rather clunky. 1)His interpretation is overdetermined. Reading this biography flattens Foucault's works into being about the same thing. Foucault, in Miller's hands, appear to never have had shifts in his thinking. 2)Reader beware! Miller quotes Foucault out of context. One will always have to compare Miller's quotes against the original. 3) He overpersonalizes the philospher failing to provide a context of which Foucault's ideas had arisen. If you want a well-balanced biography try David Macey. Macey respects the reader's intelligence, he allows us to decide for ourselves unlike, Miller who imposes his interpretation on us.

Book Description
Nearly twice as many women as men suffer from depression or anxiety, interfering with their ability to work and care for themselves and their loved ones. Now, Deborah Sichel and Jeanne Watson Driscoll show how depression and anxiety are the result of a process of long–term chemical "loading" as the brain repeatedly "revs up" in response to stress. Here, they share their unique self–care program, NURSE: Nourishment and Needs, Understanding, Rest and Relaxation, Spirituality, and Exercise, to help the brain self–stabilise and prevent future problems. They also advocate early, customised use of medications, uniquely based on how a woman's genetic make up, life experiences, and hormonal and reproductive history affect her particular mood disruptions. An intimate look at how women's mood issues change at each stage of their reproductive lives, this book offers help to women who have been suffering in silence for too long.

Great book to sort through hormonal and depression issues.......2007-08-18
This is a great book. I got it at the library and liked it so much that I ordered it from Amazon. It explains hormonal fluctuations and how they tie into depression and mood disorders.
Well thought out book!.......2007-06-07
Reading the book makes me wonder how these women would diagnose me compared to my current psychiatrist. Awesome book. I have a hard time putting it down. I love the many real life examples that are written in there. They make think back on my own life. I always had a feeling a big part of me being bipolar II is do to the craziness of being on and off of birth control throughout my life. You would think hopefully ob/gyn would make it a requirement for women to see a psychiatrist before getting on any birth control to make sure the birth control won't have any adverse affects on them like it did me. I wish I would've known I was bipolar before I screwed myself over with birth control. I would not have taken any birth control at all in my life.
It is sad seeing my Aunt who is of the generation of keeping silent. I recommended this book to her. I for one am gratefully my generation is now more open to many changes of female hormones, emotions, and the brain. I hope that one day my Aunt will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel and realize what she is going through other women experience as well.
I understand where some of the comments are coming from about the drug issue, in this day in age there is a little bigger and better selection of drugs available. When it comes to taking them as needed to try do as prescribed by psychiatrists. My aunt went into relapses each time she came off of it. I love the suggest that is made about changing the amount of drugs taken according to what time of month it is with menstrual cycles.
Also authors did a great job explaining the brain and how hormones affect it and how delicate the mind is. It helped me realize in tears how much I have taken my mind for granted and not pay to much attention to give it rest from everyday stresses, which explains why the brain has self destruct thoughts because of so much over load past years and damage to the chemicals in the mind to help keep stable.
Before I read this book I was in desperate needs to better understand my diagnoses of bipolar II that received a couple months back, this book was the answer to my prayers, now I better understand the importance of medications for those that are truly in need help from chemical imbalances my brain. Before I had thoughts that I didn't want to go through with what my friend went through with bouncing around through psychiatrist finding the right diagnose and become a lab rat with finding the right medications. Now I know the importance of having a psychiatrist that will diagnose me as a whole.
Currently I'm not on any medications right now, since I just been diagnosed by a therapist two months back. I want to learn more about my situation and thanks to this book need of searching for the most part stops with this book.
I can't thank the authors enough for all there time and effort in putting the book together for us women

changed my view about depression.......2007-02-07
This is my first online review of a book on Amazon's website.
This book was tremendously helpful. Even though I have dealt with depression and worked hard to overcome it, in the back of my mind, I blamed myself for this problem and felt that I was "not strong enough." Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten it in the first place. Right?
Well, no. Women's Moods changed my perspective. It showed me that depression is a physiological condition that is sometimes triggered and exacerbated by life events. I felt such relief after reading this book.
I am surprised at the negative reviews. One person complains that it is not scientific enough; another, that there is too much exposition about biochemistry. Another; that the book is a sales pitch for SSRI's.
I though the book had the right balance of case histories, explanation about biochemistry, and information on treating depression. Yes, meds are sometimes suggested in the case histories, but certainly not all of the meds are SSRI's.
I thank the authors for writing such an insightful book.
A BOOK EVERY WOMAN SHOULD READ.......2005-09-01
This is a beautiful book that every woman should read. It deals with women's moods from the onset of menstruation to menopause. PMS, PMDD, PPD and Menopause. The NURSE program designed to help women heal from PPD is one I specifically recommend to the mothers in the Postpartum Support Group. This book should be on every woman's shelf, no matter what her age.
Drug Agenda Here.......2005-05-15
What a sad book! Read the book and you'll notice how she
preaches depression as the main theme of being a female. Her
answer wouldn't ya know is a psychiatrict drug,Prozaic.Bad idea!
I've known many people who have been dupped into taking this
drug, both men and women, the results were heightened bipolar
disorder,paranoia and more depression.It's a sales pitch
for drugs.
She wants women to be drug dependent, out of controll of their
lives, helpless. The book does not empower women,it is a depressing book, written to horrify women and get them obsessing
about their every thought and mood.
The premise is,all women are more or less the same, she couldn't
be further from the truth
Be a weary consumer, both in advice and drugs.

Finger Licking, Sophisticated Southern Cooking.......2001-02-17
This prominent Charleston chef provides us with some of his recipes which have made his restaurant a landmark.
For most of us who have not cooked with grits and greens and blackened this and that, this book teaches us to use these ingredients with style and flash.
Particularly enjoyed seeing him prepare Magnolias' Spicy Shrimp, Sausage and Tasso Gravy over Creamy White Grits on TV. This attracted me to the book. Getting the grits from his recommended source along with the tasso made the dish hopefully turn out close to the restaurant. This is good, comfort food!
Also have enjoyed an unusual dessert dish which is elegant, delicious and relatively easy to prepare: Magnolias' Baked Creams with Orange Custard Sauce.
This is delightful source to turn to when the event calls for some downhome, good basic Southern food with style and flair. Attractively done with good color photos and excellent writing guiding one through the recipes with sources, etc.
easy to follow recipes. real food proven by Magnolias Restau.......1999-11-09
Great book! The first real cookbook to come from any of the Charleston area Restaurants. Beautiful photographs and makes a great gift, especially for those who have eaten or have been to the famous Magnolias.
Superb and imaginative Southern cuisine; exceptional taste........1999-08-27
I purchased two copies of this book (one for myself and one for a friend) while dining at Magnolia's in Charleston. We were so impressed with the food that we had to have the recipe for the grits with shrimp dish that enthralled my husband (who is not a Southerner). While there we ran into others who are equally impressed. One famous journalist detours frequently just for the food at Magnolia's. Recipes are well presented, easy to follow and delicious. When calling for special ingredients, e.g., tasso, the author provides sources. For anyone who loves to cook and wants to evoke Southern style in a new and fresh way, this book will serve all your needs.

Clay person.......2007-01-28
This is an essential book for anyone undertaking clay tile making. Many claim to be that essential book, but based on what is available in my local library, this one really is it. Her projects and those of a range of others included in the book are both great illustrations of the many processes involved and useful for stimulating the creative ideas of her readers.
I'm sick of renewing my library copy. I'm gonna buy my own.
Great ideas and techniques.......2006-03-17
The techniques represented were unique. There were many examples of other clay artists works. Ms. Pozo presented step by step photo processing for each technique. She started with clay basics and moved forward through firing ranges, shrinking, warping, cracking and glazes. She gave excellent usable information on the installation processes.
Good solid reference book.......2005-05-19
This book has a little of everything. If you are just starting out in tile-making it would be an excellent choice. There are a LOT of different decorating techniques, and a very wide range of applications. The book is laid out well, with plenty of photos, so you can see finished examples of the techniques being described in the text below on the page. It would be an excellent beginner-to-novice book.
Personally, I prefer Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles", because it has more technical information, glaze recipes, firing information, etc., but if I were starting out to make tiles on my own and taking them elsewhere for firing, I think Pozo's book would be a better choice.
Must have!.......2005-03-25
This book is a must have from novice to "pro!" It is a beautiful, comprehensive book on tile examples, tile methods, and equipment. Awesome!

Full of insights.......2005-08-12
This is a reallt great book for parents and pastors who need to work with youths. It is balanced, graceful, and full of insights. It's one of the books I want to read again and again to make sure I do not lose sight of any of Peterson's advices.
Peterson reminds us all gifts, even teenagers, are from God.......1999-09-29
Chapter by chapter, Peterson presents each teenage challenge to parents (10 of them), and answers them with scripture and understanding. If we cannot draw on the example of Jesus to relate to our teenagers, then what good is our faith? As Christians we are uniquely gifted to deal with life, especially teenage sons and daughters. I was impressed with the examples. I recommend this book for parents *and* for teenagers, as both should come to a better understanding of each other after reading it.
Peterson Builds a Theology of Parenthood.......1997-10-09
We have a review of this book on our church's web page, at www.ilinks.net/~faithpca/teams/youth/parents.html
