          Book Description

A warped dream, an overbearing father, and his son

A handsome, brilliant man, the author's father-irascible, strong-willed, a compulsive womanizer-stands at the center of this strangely compelling story.
In the mid-1970s, after a life in government service, which was shadowy in its depths, Ted Wertime built a fortress-like house on a mountaintop in south-central Pennsylvania. He had forged for himself a secondary career as a highly respected historian of ancient science and technology, and was convinced that it was his fate to lead a sweeping revolution that would cleanse the United States of energy abuse, political corruption, and an odd assortment of social ills. His "citadel" would serve as his revolutionary headquarters. He, his wife, and Joan, the last and most troubled of his succession of mistresses, lived in the house together in a bizarre ménage à trois. His dream was to recruit his four sons to take part in his cause.

The author, Richard Wertime, is the second-oldest son. Citadel on the Mountain is the story of his struggle to escape from a domineering and, at times, hypnotizing father who sought to control the sexual and professional lives of his offspring.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you for telling your story ..........2004-05-27

As a former student of the author, it's a treat to turn the tables and 'grade' him. I read this book over a year ago; and I am just getting around to leaving my review. (Maybe for fear that it would be critiqued!) It's a very interesting situation to be in when you're reading a book that is written by someone you know; couple that with the fact that it is a personal memoir of his life experience. It is a fascinating read, though sometimes disturbing in content. But it is a poignant look into a father/son relationship that was, to say the least, not healthy. But it also reaffirms that strong connection a son has to his father. I thank Dr. Wertime for making his story public and applaud his candor. Grade 'A' ...

5 out of 5 stars The eveil that men do.......2001-04-12

I knew and worked with this bizarre and at times scarey man. It would be impossible for one man, even his son, to know everything about him, how dark, sometimes insane, his obscure habits and character were. Not a plreasant read; not a pleasant subject. But fully worthy of exposure. Unfortunately not a unique type of government "servant."

          5 out of 5 stars Daddy Dearest . . ........2001-01-13

Life with Father. Life with Weird Father. A compelling tale of twisted love and affection, minimg all the psychological currents that enter into one's relationship with one's father. This tale is like a car wreck on the highway -- you're repulsed but simultaneously fascinated by what you see. However bizarre Wertime's Dad was -- a twisted genius -- there is at the end something poignant and touching about his relationship. A worthy read!

          2 out of 5 stars it'll make a better novel.......2000-10-09

"In the future everyone will write a memoir for 15 minutes. And many of them will get published, because reader passion for personal nonfiction (as well as an urge to share on the part of anyone who has ever been abused, gotten drunk, felt ugly, or gone crazy) has only intensified in our Oprahfied culture of empowering public confession. Everyone's story is interesting to someone, of course, but at this point in the literary onslaught, I've gotten tough on what it takes to hold my interest : A memoir is worth finishing only if (1) the life lived is so extraordinary that the ordinariness of the writing is of little importance, or (2) the writing is so extraordinary that the ordinariness of the life is of little importance. In fact, ordinariness transformed into art becomes the whole point of the Cinderella endeavor." -Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly (reviewing Mary Karr's memoir : Cherry)

Little remarked in the current memoir craze is the fact that an entire generation of writers is wasting the material that authors have traditionally mined for their first novels, their own life experiences. Instead of taking advantage of the personally and stylistically liberating form and techniques which fiction offers, they are inundating us with half-baked recollections of the very specific circumstances of their own lives. Half-baked because real life does not provide the kind of closure and narrative structure that fiction does, nor does non-fiction allow the authors to really plumb the psychological depths of those who people their stories. Instead, they give us stories where they share all too much about themselves, but the folks they interact with, most often parents, are little more than cardboard cutouts. This is a limitation imposed by the form they have chosen. After all, at the point where they start speculating about the motivations, feelings and thoughts of others they are no longer writing non-fiction but have instead veered into the field of supposition, of fiction. this presents a series of problems : first, that what is presented as factual often smacks of the fictional; second, that characters other than the author tend to appear so opaque as to defy our understanding; and, finally, that the authors miss out on a real opportunity to try to understand the people who influenced their lives. Where fiction would force them to see the story through the eyes of the other characters, memoir restricts them to their personal, and obviously incomplete, perspective. The books that memoirists produce, with rare exceptions, serve neither the author nor the reader well.

All of these weaknesses are on display in Richard Wertime's memoir, Citadel on the Mountain. The central figure in the book is his father Ted Wertime, a domineering, violent, atavistic man who held his family in some kind of mysterious thrall. A former member of the OSS during WWII, the father may or may not have subsequently been a CIA operative, but at any rate he did serve in posts in Iran, the Far East and elsewhere which seem to suggest that he remained in the clandestine intelligence field. Whatever his secret duties entailed, he did become an expert on early technologies, specifically on ancient metallurgy, and eventually went to work at the Smithsonian and published several long essays in the Washington Post in the mid-70's.

The book offers little information about how the entire process occurred, perhaps because the author does not know himself, but Ted Wertime gradually became a kind of monstrous combination of John Brown and the Unabomber. He physically controlled and psychologically manipulated his family, to the point of choosing sexual partners for his sons and forcing his wife to accept his mistress as a part of the household. He retreated to a fortress-like home on a mountaintop in Pennsylvania, to which he browbeat his sons into returning again and again. There he awaited his own weird version of the apocalypse, an end of days which he envisioned being brought on by man's overreliance on technology and by the resulting environmental degradation.

You can see from that bare outline that there's the basis for an interesting story here. Ted Wertime was the kind of dangerous fanatic with whom we've become all too familiar, a David Koresh of the radical environmental set. The reader would like to know how he got that way, what made him tick, and, most importantly, why his family allowed him to get away with his repellent social behavior. Unfortunately, that's not what the book gives us. There is never a moment where you can comprehend why Richard Wertime loved his father, let alone tolerated the way he treated his mother. In the final pages he makes a seeming attempt to justify his father; and what does he offer : "How hard he'd worked to become a scholar!;" his love of music, sports and the outdoors; and his talent for reading aloud to his sons and neighborhood kids. That's an awfully meager set of positives to try to balance out the genuinely disturbing set of character traits he's depicted previously. As he concludes the book, it is clear that he loved, still loves, his father, but I have no idea why. At a minimum, the book should have explained that one basic thing.

If Richard Wertime ever takes this raw material and turn it into a novel, I'll be interested to see what he comes up with. As for this memoir, it fails to pass Lisa Schwarzbaum's test, and mine.

          GRADE : C-

4 out of 5 stars An admirable story.......2000-10-02

This autobiography is part frightening, part awe inspiring and part shocking as it dives into the generation war between the "greatest generation" having fought in WW II and the Cold War, and their seemingly soft children. Ted Wertime was a Renaissance man having succeeded in music, espionage, diplomacy, and history. However, he also was an abusive spouse and father with his crowning achievement in his mind being the Citadel on top of the Southern Pennsylvania Allegheny Mountains. Ted tried to mold his children into his macho view of the world, which he expected to end soon.

Although he exposes himself, his siblings, and his parents to the world via this book, Richard Wertime has not written a papa dearest. Instead, this combination autobiography-biography paints a picture of a brilliant, but disturbed father passing dysfunctional relationships onto at least his second son, who copycats him. Surprisingly, this book does not seem as if it provides closure to the author who failed to attain that when his father rejected the touchy-feely notion even when Ted lay dying. Instead, it is a combination healing experience for the disturbed author and a reminder to the audience that parents have more than an obligation to their children, who need lots of love.

Jacob Boehme was a 16'Th century shoemaker turned mystic. Living in what is now Germany, Boehme wrote his thoughts about the nature of the universe and of God. Weeks takes us through Boehme's life in an academic journey, laying out Boehme's central idea's (an interesting blend of pantheism and individualism) and life events (got hassled by the church). The book is not too hard to read, even for the lay reader, and is packed with information about the man and his time. Jacob Boehme deserves his place in the pantheon of great mystics, and weeks helps him there.

The Rancho La Puerta spa in Baja California has been around for almost 60 years and has gained a reputation for its flavor-packed, low-fat vegetarian meals. Longtime chef Bill Wavrin, known for stunning his guests with his expertise, lets his love of Southwestern cuisine show through in his (mostly) simple recipes. Few dishes require more than a dozen ingredients, and he includes information on calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, and sodium for each dish. Orange-Corn Muffins and the Rancho La Puerta Granola have been satisfying guests after the strenuous morning hike for years. Dishes such as Mango Tomatilla Salsa, Broccoli Soup, Curried Rice Salad with Fruit, Banana-Oatmeal Cookies, and Blueberry Cheesecake will make you feel like you're indulging, but won't cost you more than 120 calories per serving. In between the chapters, Wavrin offers cooking tips (how to eat a mango; how to identify and prepare various chilies) and soothing ways to "take the ranch home" with you, including stretches and other fitness tips. If you can't get to Baja, this book is the next best thing.

                    Book Description

Just a few miles south of the border in Baja, the Rancho La Puerta spa has been attracting guests to its tranquil environment and renowned program for more than fifty-five years.  But after mountain hikes timed to watch the sunrise, stretch-and-tone classes, and massages, what guests look forward to most is the stunning spa cuisine created by chef Bill Wavrin.

The breakfast buffet features the spa's famous Rancho La Puerta Granola, Persian Pancakes, and Banana Bran Muffins.  Leisurely lunches on the patio bring Curried Carrot Soup with Dill or Lentil and Sun-dried Tomato Salad.  And dinner selections include Enchiladas with Salsa Mexicana, Pasta with Shiitake Mushrooms and Moroccan Lemons, or Butternut Squash with Mushrooms.

Now, everyone can prepare these unique low-fat, high-flavor dishes at home.  Inspired by the vibrant flavors of the Southwest and northern Mexico, with a sprinkling of other international cuisines, The Rancho La Puerta Cookbook is the next best thing to spending a sun-drenched week at the spa.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant, if slightly bland, healthy vegetarian fare.......2004-04-04

The recipes in this book definitely lean toward the elegant side. It's hard to go wrong with something like Curried Mango-Peanut Yogurt Dip or Carrot-Ginger Salad with Pineapple. The recipes tend toward the exotic and the healthful, including things like Vegetable Barley Soup, Garden Sweet Breakfast Bread, Chinese Dumplings with Chives and Ginger, and Mango Tomatillo Salsa. This book stresses fresh vegetables and salads, and the recipes tend to be fairly light fare in general. You probably won't get a lot of use out of this cookbook if your grocery store doesn't carry good produce; plan these recipes for just after your grocery shopping so that produce is in the best possible condition.

There are some ingredients that might be a little difficult to find depending on where you live. I have trouble finding tomatillos, for example. Most ingredients are fairly common, however. The book's layout is fantastic. Commentary is very easy to tell apart from ingredients are very easy to tell apart from instructions, and instructions are nicely numbered.

While many of the tastes are a touch exotic, to my taste buds they don't take things far enough sometimes and end up tasting a bit bland. Of course I love strong flavors, so to some people this may be a plus; you can always adjust seasoning to taste if you want more flavor. These recipes are vegetarian but not vegan--you will find dairy and eggs in here.

Certainly if you're on a diet this is a fantastic way to serve elegant, impressive dishes that won't pile on the pounds.

4 out of 5 stars Healthy food to get you going for the day.......2001-10-25

Rancho La Puerta's food is really good! If you're vegetarian like I am you'll especially appreciate the great recipes! The only thing I didn't like about this cookbook was the lack of photos. It would have been helpful to see photos of the recipes prepared & also nice to have more color photos of beautiful Rancho La Puerta. My family spent our first Thanksgiving at the ranch last year and it was really wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars A Charming Look at Spa Cooking.......2000-10-27

After reading this book, I thought how nice it must be to stay at the Rancho La Puerta and eat Bill Wavrin's food. I have made several of the recipes and the results were highly successful, although some of the combinations seemed a little odd in print. Mr. Wavrin likes to use lots of ingredients in his cooking, so it helps to have a well-stocked kitchen, but it is worth the effort. His comments in the book show a sensitive approach to vegetarianism and I was struck by his confession that even experience in Mexican and Nouvelle California cuisine did not really prepare him for meatless cooking. If you can't go to a spa, my advice is to pamper yourself for a weekend, with a good workout, a massage from someone you like, some time in the sauna and two days' worth of cooking from recipes in this book, with the best ingredients you can find. The low-fat, low-calorie thing is just a nice bonus.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very nice........2000-02-23

Although I agree that some of the recipes do suffer from lack of fat and texture, this is a treat just to read. It stresses the importance of fresh ingredients, and uses spices and cheeses to enhance dishes, not overpower them. The philosophy of the spa is carefully presented, and the reader is encouraged--not lectured--to try a new, healthier way of eating and living. A good find.

4 out of 5 stars This book is required for any serious cook!.......1999-04-02

Bill Wavrin is a GREAT chef. I have been fortunate to have tasted his food at Rancho La Puerta, and it is wonderful. In his book, he recreates many of the flavors I remember and cherish from my visits to the Ranch. Even more important, he credits his staff substantially (and correctly}. Bill never acted like a "star" chef although he truly is a star. The recipies are great, and have wonderful asides with important information. My only complaint is that there are no great color pictures of the food or the ranch itself.

3 out of 5 stars Looked better than it actually was..........2003-03-20

Got excited about this one when I saw it, but found the designs WAAAAY to intricate. This may be a matter of taste, or the nature of Brazilian embroidery, but the book is definitely full of very similar-looking designs. It just wasn't what I was looking for in transfer patterns.

                        2 out of 5 stars Show, don't tell!.......2002-12-23

In fairness, I would have given a 2.5 rating if that were available. Admittedly, this is a reasonably priced book, so one doesn't lose much by giving it a try. My problem with it, is that it is heavy on the "tell" and not very good at the "show." While the embroidery stitches are explained with (very basic) line drawings, the actual flower designs are described in writing with no sequential drawings. This leaves the reader flipping back and forth between the earlier "stitch glossary" pages trying to work out how each flower is made. The book is probably fine for a more advanced hobbyist who is mainly interested in the iron-on transfer patterns. I would not recommend it to a beginner or to someone who has no knowledge of basic three-dimensional embroidery stitches.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with terrific designs...truly one of a kind........2000-10-30

This book truly is unique. No other book I have ever read gives such fine instructions on how to...and also provides you with such intricate designs. Now a days, you see books on how to, plenty of instruction, but they are really cheap with designs. Not this book! Money well invested.

If you're wanting to learn to how do Brazilian embrodiery...this is your book!

                                            Book Description

Jalita Harrison is a nineteen-year-old biracial woman who was born in to a dysfunctional environment, but aspired to overcome it. After raising herself on the streets of Baltimore, she decides she wants no part of a destructive lifestyle and is accepted in to a college in Virginia. During Christmas break, she is left temporarily homeless and nearly penniless. As a result, Jalita returns to Baltimore, where people from her past double-cross her.

Frustrated and desperate, Jalita decides to start running game in the nearby suburbs, using her good looks, wit, and street smarts to survive. Schemin' becomes an addictive habit that leads her to abandon her college plans and self-imposed morality. When she and a handsome but engaged NBA basketball star agree to hook up on the down low, Jalita becomes a part of a dangerous love triangle. Before it's all said and done, the script is flipped on each party involved and everyone is left to live with consequences of behaving badly.

                                            3 out of 5 stars Entertaining - mediocre read.......2007-06-02

I liked this book because it depicted the main charcter's thoughts thoroughly (Jalita) and i really like how she was so confident and fun in a crazy way. It just gets to the point towards the middle of the book that I was like "wow are you serious". She just kinda starts to get on your nerves and I almost didint want to finish reading it. Although it kept me going for the first few days. I loved it at the beginning , but got tired of it . . if you want to read what a hoody-rat will do for money and how she thinks she has it all under control read this book. She is a crazy girl that really dont give a damn.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Tomi is a NUT!!!!!.......2006-12-19

I'm glad I decided to order this book off Amazon. The story flowed and it was an easy read. Tomi was my favorite character even though Jalita was the main character of the book. This was a page turner and I highly recommend it.

There's no need for me to give details about what the story is about. The title tells it all. Jalita is a straight gold digger, if you don't have that green don't holla her way.

                                            *Five stars!

This Gold Diggin chic got on my last D*mn nerve I was like baby girl stop gold digging so much and get a JOB!!! but I was very satisfied at the end because she got what she deserved and I did not feel sorry for her! Just because you meet a guy with hopes and dreams but no money does not mean thats how he will be forever, and baby girl got a big reality check.

                                            1 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Take It!.......2006-02-22

This is the worst book I have ever read! The writing is choppy, unrealistic, and nerve racking. I found myself skipping parts of this book just so I could get to the end. I never read the last 2-3 page because I couldn't take anymore. I will not purchase anything else by this author.
