Book Description
This is a true story about a young boy who grew up on a tenant farm in rural Arkansas. Having no hope of obtaining a higher education, he joins the Navy.
As you read, you’ll share the cultural shock he experienced from the rigors of military life upon entering bootcamp. You all feel his pain when he learns that he’ll be going aboard ship instead of to a technical school.
You'll revel with him when he finally discovers his niche as a Navy Hospital Corpsman. You'll learn to love, as he did, the Navy Nurse who eventually became his wife. The joy at the birth of his first two children turns bittersweet when he finds himself discharged from the Navy and unemployed.
The decision to re-enter the Navy, after learning his wife was pregnant with their third child, is gut wrenching. You'll experience his frustration with the outbreak of the Vietnam War.
In a very short time, he finds himself attached to the Marine Corps serving in an infantry battalion. You'll come to know what it’s like to be an ordinary man in combat as he describes his struggles to stay alive and remain sane.

An Insider Look at an Enlisted Man's Naval Career.......2006-09-14
Author John Messer does a wonderful job for all those military people out there who have worked hard and have served gallantly in the shadows of others. Those men he represents are really the vast percentage of our military forces. They honor their uniform and country everyday through the most simple and humble of tasks at times but always with pride. The men he represents were not those big heroes that got all the medals or who were an officer in charge of anything. However, when duty calls and they must face the dangers of being in combat they do so without complaint. He paints a portrait of his own career as an enlisted man in the US Navy in his insightful book about his own life called "Guardians of the Eagle". But as we learn from reading his personal life story he was much more then he humbly claims to be.
John's opening chapters of his childhood on a farm give you some insight into his character and perhaps even why he chose to stay and serve in the Navy. There is sensitivity in the story telling as it unfolds across his life. He gives us his life with warts and all at times but it comes across as an honest attempt at understanding what he went through and why things happened to him.
His experiences in the Vietnam War as a medic attached to the Marines shows you the kind of man he was then and why he is who he is today. He shares with us the horror and senselessness of that time and place. You can almost feel his heart beating when he is under attack and huddled in a bunker and sense the outrage at seeing the brutality and insanity all around him. Some of the things he saw he still carries with him after all these years. He tells us of young men in battle who change and not necessarily always for the best. He survived his "tour of duty" but he was changed forever by that war in ways that may not be evident to others or even himself.
It is easy to like the author as he takes the reader through his ups and downs of his life and career in the navy including his time in Nam. You will find yourself truly interested in his life as you begin to feel a kinship for him. This man has no pretenses and no delusions as to who he is and what he has done but I think he understates the importance of his own contributions to others and the Navy. In my book, he is one of those unsung heroes that the makes the military function. He did what was asked and did so even at risk to his own life at times.
I recommend this book for all career and former career military. They will find that it has many pearls of wisdom and some common observations on life in the service regardless of which branch they served in. It is an easy read and makes for good entertainment.
Book Description
A superb autobiography by one of the great literary figures of the twentieth century,
Simone de Beauvoir's
Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter offers an intimate picture of growing up in a bourgeois French family, rebelling as an adolescent against the conventional expectations of her class, and striking out on her own with an intellectual and existential ambition exceedingly rare in a young woman in the 1920s.
She vividly evokes her friendships, love interests, mentors, and the early days of the most important relationship of her life, with fellow student Jean-Paul Sartre, against the backdrop of a turbulent political time.
Customer Reviews:
Simone rocks!.......2007-08-18
I have read many biographies and autobiographies of influential and powerful women in history and many were good, but Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter is by far the best written I've come across. Not only is it very thoughtfully expressed, but de Beauvoir has me totally hooked on her writing.
So much of what she wrote about in her youth I could relate to: the feelings of being oppressed and pressures to conform to behaviors and beliefs she didn't believe in, wavering emotions of joy and pain in interactions with parents, sibling, and friends, wanting to break away from a suffocating atmosphere, and being her own person on HER terms. Many write of the same things, but she expressed exactly how she felt and thought in such a way that I felt I was right there with her! Few authors have grabbed me in such a feverish manner as to cause me to want to read EVERYTHING they wrote. I'm glad to say she is one of them. Highly recommended!
the Realm of Existentialism.......2007-07-30
Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter is the first of Simone de Beauvoir's four autobiographies.
"The most innocent conversations were full of hidden traps; my parents construed my words with their own idiom and ascribed to me ideas that had nothing in common with what I really thought. I found myself repeating Barres' phrase: 'Why have words when their brutal precision bruises our complicated souls'. As soon as I opened my mouth, I provided them with a stick to beat me with, and once more I would be shut up in that world which I had spent years trying to get away from, in which everything, without any possibility of mistake, has its own name, its set place and its agreed function, in which hate and love, good and evil are as crudely differentiated as black and white, in which from the start everything is classified, catalogued, fixed and formulated, and irrevocably judged; that world with the sharp edges, its bare outlines starkly illuminated by an implacable flat light that is never once touched by the shadow of doubt."
In Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter, Simone de Beauvoir lives in a stark black-and-white world with no gray areas or blurred edges. Everything is stiff and rigid -- almost suffocatingly so -- she cannot breathe (philosophically speaking) and cries a lot. "Dutifulness" has a death-grip around her throat! She abhors blatant tradition, mindless religious rites and glaring absurdity -- but, she loves Paris, books, her first cousin Jacques, writing and nature!
The Luxembourg garden in Paris (filled with picturesque fountains, diverse minds and fragrant flowers, near the Sorbonne university) plays a major (inspirational) focal point in her formative years. At a very early age, Simone decides she will become a world renowned writer -- but, in order to accomplish such a feat, must give up any idea of marriage and children -- at least in the traditional sense. She plans to focus all her creative energies toward her #1 passion, writing.
A meticulous undertaking, satisfying -- very "Dutiful". --Katharena Eiermann, 2007, the Realm of Existentialism, Presidential Hopeful
I read this 20 years ago.......2006-05-30
and I was amazed at her perception, her understanding of what it is to see as a child and how ones relation with ones parents changes. This is must reading for anyone who has been a child or is a parent. Her intelligent articulation of our experience is a gift.
I'm just about to re-read it, and I bet I'll have more to say then.

MEMOIRS OF A DUTIFUL GIRL FEMINIST MUST READ.......2005-01-16
Simone de Beauvoir was one of the rare women writers who overcame the odds against her sex in the early 20th century and got her work published. You can imagine how much focus and hard work it took her to be heard among the heady intellectuals on the Existential scene at the time. She had to be a tough woman with enormous self confidence to command the respect and admiration of intellectual giants like Sartre.
When I first read MEMOIR OF A DUTIFUL DAUGHTER, I was drawn to the title and intriqued by de Beauvoir's interesting life story. And of course she is French.
Simone de Beauvoir was a woman of extraordinary intellect and beauty. Her legendary love affair with philosopher Jean Paul Sartre was the inspiration for the personal story at the center of the famous Existentialist's ROADS TO FREEDOM. This riveting trilogy, which begins with the phenomenal AGE OF REASON was my favorite reading experience at Wellesley. The only other reading marathon that comes close to that memorable read is the months I spent immersed reading Japan and reincarnation in Mishima's tetralogy SEA OF FERTILITY a few years later.
The French novel love affair started with a class at Wellesley in 1971 or 1972 with the late great writer George Stambolian where we read 19th century novels in the original French partnered with a history seminar where we studied the same period in France through history texts and novels. The pioneer scholar and advocate for gay writers and photographers M. Stambolian was exceedingly handsome and charming as well as brilliant. I fell in love with reading the French texts and kept going up into the 20th century on my own long after I left Wellesley.
MEMOIR OF A DUTIFUL DAUGHTER is an important read for young women yearning to understand the meaning of their existence. De Beauvoir's complex contemplation of her life from girlhood to womanhood and her observations of how the political and religious institutions of her time affected women make this book basic reading for feminists and women's history scholars. That de Beauvoir's voice was ever heard is testament to her genius. That millions of women worldwide can read words she penned nearly a century ago is testimony to how far we have come.
Have a look into the mind of a genius.......2004-02-15
An intriguing and fascinating look into the first years of and intellectual and a woman of genius. By reading this book you
will be taken on a tour of young Simone's wishes, hopes, illusions, disappontments, strength and weaknesses. You will also get a living potrait of French society in the first part of the XX century. Are you curious about who were the friends
of this great artist and philosopher, how she formed her character, what shaped her life and destiny? You will find it all here. Beware that Simone's mind had a strong tendency for
abstraction so you won't find here lots of juicy details, or a sequence of emotional adventures like in Rousseau's Confessions.
Principles, abstract thinking and reflexion had a great weight
in Simone's life and this book is principally the biography of her mind. The force of Simone's drive to be someone, to find something important and meaningful to do, her stubborn desire to find a sense for her existence, her need to "tell to everyone what she felt she had to say" glows throughout the book and is probably its principal beauty.
The Formation of A Philosopher.......2000-11-25
Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter is the first in a series of autobiographies by Simone de Beauvoir. Beauvoir tells the reader of her early days as a child and she concludes while she is a young women with the loss of her beloved friend Zaza. The memoir is at times a bit dry, and dull, but I dont think it was the intent of Beauvoir to write an exciting tale of her childhood. Instead I believe that the book was written more to show the path Beauvoir took in being an intellectual and why. Many times in the book French bourgeios soceity is criticized by Beauvoir because there was a double standard that exisited. For instance as Beauvoir writes about her mother "Convention obliged her to excuse certain [sexual] indescretions in men; she concentrated her disapproval on women; she divided women into those who were 'respectable' and those who were 'lose" (38). All throughout the book the reader is presented with a double standard-- men do what they want have carrers, jobs etc. while women must be pure and stay at home to have children. Not only is bourgeois society criticized, so too is the Catholic church in its regards to French private and public education. Besides the main themes Beauvoir talks about her childhood recolections-- her visiting relatives, her love of books, and her friends which culminates in the death of her life long friend Zaza. Beauvoir sees Zaza death as the fault of the French bourgeois system becuase Zaza died died of a broken heart at not being able to marry her love. The book is full of criticisms, and odinary tales. The best atribute of the book is that it presents the reader to the world of early 20th century French bourgeois society.
PORTRAIT OF THE PHILOSOPHER AS A YOUNG WOMAN.......2000-07-21
It is interesting that a previous reviewer at the site called this the most accessible volume of Simone's memoirs while another wrote that this is not the best place to start with Simone. I agree with the latter. I have come to the conclusion that Simone's own diligence sometimes brought her to her knees. This was a woman capable of working for hours on end. . .and drinking just as hard. Clearly, she was ambivalent about herself:she knew she was of superior intelligence -- she finished her aggregation at the age of 21 -- yet she maintained a position that she was second to Sartre. She said that she never felt handicapped as a woman and yet she suffered from many of woman's woes -- crying and jealousy. I started with Simone's war-time memoirs -- Force of Circumstance -- which are so riveting that they draw you immediately into them. I expected the same sort of lush and wonderful writing here. I may have approached this volume with my hopes too high. A word of warning: Catholicism obviously made quite an impact on the young Simone. Readers who are not Catholic maybe mystified by this book.
A blueprint of one woman's genius.......2000-05-29
This is the first (and, admittedly, the easiest to read) of Beauvoir's multi-volume journals. It is an amazing account of the philosopher's beginnings, and I press it on young women in high school and college when they talk to me about their struggles to understand their place in our world.

Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-05-31
In this book is proof that almost every woman is in the same predicament. It is entertaining to read as well.
Good for some audiences.......2007-05-06
This is a well written book. It is, however, for a specific audience. The overall theme of the book is ways to relax and get in touch with your body. There are ways to do that, that one might not have thought. It is very basic. I'd already done 99.5 % of the stuff in there, and it wasn't working, so although the book is good, it did not work for me. This book is based on very traditional sex, very traditional sex roles, and more towards the romantic, and "making love" instead of purely physical f***ing. This book would be good for women who see alot of sex topics as taboo, and are not comfortable with their bodies, or expressing what they want out of sex.
Just what I was looking for........2004-01-23
This book was just what I was looking for. I didn't want some preachy book about how women have been opressed for so long. I didn't want someone to talk to me in a condescending way, or make assumptions about me or my partners. I wanted something concrete-a program or steps that I could follow. And this is exactly what I found! The author offers a step-by-step program, which guides you to orgasm by taking "baby steps" to get there. The program has helped my relationship immensly, and I know it will be a very rewarding journey all the way through to the last steps!
good book.......2001-12-19
It seems that most of the sexual guides out there are geared to giving the man pleasure. In my experience that has never been a problem. The guides that are geared toward woman are usually filled with stories about muti orgasmic woman sharing their adventures. If you are a woman who really wants some clear cut advice that really works given in a friendly chatty kind of format this book is for you. It is written by a woman who had the frustation of regular unsatisfying sex herself and tells how she learned to overcome this. It was not written by some clinical doctor. The program teaches you how to be in control of your own orgasm in bed not be dependent on the abilities of your partner to have one. It's empowering. I definately recommend this book.
the most subtle and positive feminist approach ..........1999-12-12
Of all how-to-do sex books for women, this one is the best because it focuses on the intimate relationship of women to their own sexuality. More than just giving techniques, Rachel Swift leads the reader to a very natural change in the everyday behavior, focusing on how to gain control in sexual (but it extends to more ...) situations by learning to develop the ability to satisfy oneself and to get familiar with one's own fantasies.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE this cook book & I am NOT a Tofu fan !.......2007-05-11
When someone says TOFU I say YUCK! No Way! But I will tell you that this cookbook is excellent! Tofu and all! Everything I have made tastes great. I made a full mexican stlye meal for my family and extended family (all will NOT eat tofu) and they all loved it. They took the left-overs home. I never did tell them that I used tofu or that is was vegitarian. I used tofu, that soybean meatless meat stuff and nobody knew. (I made Spanish Rice, Border Beans and Fajitas.) I also purchase the 20 Minutes to Dinner Cook Book by the same author and it is good also. The Chinese Noodles are to die for. The pasta salad is excellent. I still cannot believe I am eating tofu and liking it. Great source of protein if your not a meat eater. It has no taste-it takes on what-ever flavor you are cooking it with. You don't even notice the texture. You don't notice it at all. Who would have thought. My Mom who is against anything healthy keeps coming over to see what I am making for dinner. I just don't tell her it is tofu or healthy and she eats it. Someday if she finds out she will kill me! She is anti whole wheat, aniti vitamin, anti tofu. She loves meat, smokes and sits on the couch waiting for a heart-attack. Great Book!
Excellent cookbook.......2006-12-11
I am very impressed by this cookbook. I have collected over 50 cookbooks, most of them vegetarian/vegan. Her recipes are easy to follow and delicious. The pumpkin pie recipe is the BEST (vegan or not)! I highly recommend this cookbook.
Excellent introduction to yummy vegan recipes.......2006-02-25
Anyone looking for a good basic introduction to vegan recipes should have this book. (Lacto-ovo vegetarians need not be scared off!) It covers a little of everything. The results are very dependable. I've made the drop biscuits, blueberry muffins, chickpea sandwich filling, eggless salad, fudgsicles, waffle iron hash browns, mock hollandaise sauce, tofu mayonnaise, worcestershire sauce and probably several others. I've always been impressed with how well the recipes turn out.
I Love this CookBook.......2005-08-12
I checked this book out from the library after returning to my Vegan/Vegetarian (I cycle my diet between Vegan and Vegetarian foods) nutritional lifestyle. The recipes are fabulous tasting and very low in fat/calories. A couple of the other reviewers comments are correct: 1. this is a Vegan cookbook, no animal products are used in the recipes, and 2. you'll need to have access to things like Nutritional Yeast (not the kind utilized in breadmaking), and Agar for SOME recipes, but not all of them.
I've made the macaroni and cheese, chocolate tofu mousse and tofu shakes so far, and they've turned out just wonderful.
I look forward to utilizing this book on a daily basis.
Great easy-to-use cookbook.......2004-03-15
This a great book. The instructions are easy to follow. The recipes turn out great.
There are also very helpful sections like the one that gives cooking times for various foods using different cooking methods.

More than just a book for preemies!.......2001-02-27
This is a tender, moving and realistic account of the perseverance of love and the preciousness of life. Not only is it a testament to advancements in pediatric care, it's meaningful to children and families who were blessed with healthy births. This sweet book teaches compassion, and ambition in the face of adversity. A warm and satisfying book to read with your kids -- "Believe" has become a bedtime favorite in my house!
A wonderful book for children about premature babies........1999-03-01
This is a wonderful uplifting book which would be especially reassuring to siblings and cousins of a premature baby. I think it's a " must have" book for children who were premies themselves. Through beautiful illustrations and thorough knowlege of the struggle of these babies, the reader is led to never forget the power of a Mother's love, and to never give up.
A tribute to the bond between mother and child.......1998-12-15
This book is wonderful for parents of preemies and for the medical professionals caring for them. As a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse I know that all too often the importance of a mother's touch, and the individuality of the infant, are forgotten. I keep a copy of this book on my bookshelf to help remind me never to forget that mom is sometimes just as effective as technology, and certainly more important. This book does a wonderful job of discussing the long-term outcomes of "preemiehood" and makes those things seem minor in the scheme of things. It shows that even though preemies are not always "normal," they are always unique and special. No matter how many times I read it, this book never fails to bring tears to my eyes, because sometimes belief in a preemie truly is the most essential tool for their survival and success.

Total Design.......2001-07-14
What is fantastic about this book is it's emphasis on furniture design as part of the total architecural environment- a belief Schindler shared with other masters of modern architecture. The book tells the stories of the wonderful pieces of sculptural furniture that Schindler designed for his projects and includes his sketches as well as numerous photos- old black and whites which have the charm of an old Hollywood movie and provide an appropriate backdrop to the innovative thinking of Schindler at such a transitional time in architectural history. Also included are essays and articles written by Schindler about his design beliefs. Loved it!
Book Description
Veronica Franco (whose life is featured in the motion picture Dangerous Beauty) was a sixteenth-century Venetian beauty, poet, and protofeminist. This collection captures the frank eroticism and impressive eloquence that set her apart from the chaste, silent woman prescribed by Renaissance gender ideology.
As an "honored courtesan", Franco made her living by arranging to have sexual relations, for a high fee, with the elite of Venice and the many travelers—merchants, ambassadors, even kings—who passed through the city. Courtesans needed to be beautiful, sophisticated in their dress and manners, and elegant, cultivated conversationalists. Exempt from many of the social and educational restrictions placed on women of the Venetian patrician class, Franco used her position to recast "virtue" as "intellectual integrity," offering wit and refinement in return for patronage and a place in public life.
Franco became a writer by allying herself with distinguished men at the center of her city's culture, particularly in the informal meetings of a literary salon at the home of Domenico Venier, the oldest member of a noble family and a former Venetian senator. Through Venier's protection and her own determination, Franco published work in which she defended her fellow courtesans, speaking out against their mistreatment by men and criticizing the subordination of women in general. Venier also provided literary counsel when she responded to insulting attacks written by the male Venetian poet Maffio Venier.
Franco's insight into the power conflicts between men and women and her awareness of the threat she posed to her male contemporaries make her life and work pertinent today.
Customer Reviews:
Dangerously addictive poetry........2007-04-03
I had wanted to get my hands on a book of Veronica Franco's poetry ever since I read THE HONEST COURTESAN. When I discovered that this was available, I snapped it up in a heartbeat. The poetry itself is a decadent pleasure, much like eating cheesecake in a bubble bath, but what makes it even better is the layout. One page has the poem in the original Italian, with the translation on the page opposite. This makes it very easy to compare and study them. The writings provide an interesting look into the mind and personality of the woman who inspired DANGEROUS BEAUTY.
I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in poetry, 16th century Venice, or just wants a fun book to pass back and forth with friends while waiting for the feast to be served.
interesting and informative.......2005-09-01
It's like a very good college textbook. But it isn't boring
Untitled.......2000-12-14
Though some of the letters included in this book are quite hard to get through without having a coffee break, the poems are absolutely fascinating. They are filled with passion and mystery. The majority of poems to or from lovers of Veronica Franco in this book are unknown, which leaves the beauty of being able to make up your own mind. This title doesn't focus so much on her life so if your after history of Veronica then another title might be more suitable. Otherwise this is well worth the buy.
Sweet Fruit of Poetry.......2000-02-29
Veronica Franco had an unbelieveable ability to write-beautifully translated and expressed in Poems and Selected Letters (Other Voice in Early Modern Europe). Margaret F. Rosenthal put this book together with careful thinking, allowing it's readers to skip to different poems and letters easily. I am not reviewing Ms. Rosenthal as much as I am Veronica Franco in her writing. The poetry is revolved around her daily events, none out of the ordinary. My particular favorite being Capitulo 13-A Challenge To A Lover Who Has Offended Her. Excellent for those interested in this portion of history, a Courtesan's life, and one who loves poetry. Very beautiful! I rated it 4 out of 5 stars-it only lacks the one star because it take a working brain to relate the poetry to what it actually means. But once done, it is well worth the time. :)
Delightful reading.......1999-10-04
The book is romantic and charming. I enjoyed it because it was written by a prostitute and she explained her life as a human being. Whereas most books treat prostitutes as abtract objects being studied by an out of touch intellectual. I was delighted at the content and found it to be enjoyable reading. However, the interpretation of the poetry to English forces it to loose its rhyme and the poems seem weak on depth. If you are reading it for quality poetry, you would be best off reading other classics. The poems simply give a window into this facisnating woman's life. They are not artfully written poems, they are just amazing because they were written in a time period when women were not supposed to be educated.

Book Description
Georg Lukács called Maxim Gorky "the greatest writer of our time." Delo Artamonovykh, published in 1925 and translated into English in 1927 as Decadence, is his greatest historical novel. Until now, it has not been widely available to Western readers.
Decadence is a family saga, an intricate character study, and a picture of Russia in the years between the serf’s emancipation and the Bolshevik Revolution. It chronicles the fortunes of three generations of merchants who, in themselves, represent the tensions of the changing social order. In 1863, Ilya Artamonov founds a linen factory by the Oka River. In time the factory prospers and his children, inspired by his passion for labor, make improvements. A grandnephew even adds a library and organizes a football team. But one grandson is lazy and another is a socialist. Already on the scene and biding his time is Tikhon, the new proletarian. The decline, or "decadence," of the Artamonov family, and by extension the Russian middle class, is a result of personality clashes and of social revolution in the wind.
Neither a lament for the old order nor a cheer for revolution, Decadence depicts the beginnings of a bourgeois class that gave way to two wars and two revolutions. It describes Russia's capitalist episode, when the developmentof factory labor and the accumulation of wealth transformed a feudal societ into a nation of workers. "Everyone lives for work, but whether men live for anything beyond their work, we can't see."
This edition of Decadence includes a foreword by Irwin Weil, professor of Slavic languages at Northwestern University.
