H-HOUR PLUS 3: The Saga of the U.S. Army Amphibian Engineers in the Pacific During World War II is about the adventures of the men of the 534th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment from its inception in Fort Devens, Massachusetts, in January 1943 to the occupation of Japan in the fall of 1945 (to January 1946).

The men of the 534th were trained at Fort Devens, Camp Edwards, and Washburn Island in Massachusetts and at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle, Florida (where some of us, including the author) went through a form of "Ranger Training". Overseas, some of our regiment trained in Australia. The rest of us trained in New Guinea.

Some elements of the 534th "ranger" group were used to ferret out remaining elements of the Japanese army in New Guinea. We all participated in the invasion of Morotai Island and, later, the Philippine Islands. After the surrender of Japan in the fall of 1945, we were transported to Japan as part of America's first military occupation.

not alot of information, tons of repeating.......2006-05-17

This book should only be about 10 pages for the amount of information in it. The information is good but if you buy the companion cookbook, almost none of the recipes follow the diet they prescribe. There are recipes for liver in their cookbook! That's one of the most toxic foods, so basically it appears as if they just want to make money off of you(they're certainly not altruistic health crusaders). And Paul Bragg is dead but they don't mention how he died or how old he was(certainly not 120 as promised), I read somewhere it was in a body surfing accident, but I'm skeptical. Don't buy this book, borrow it from the library because clearly they just want to make lots of money off of you buy trying to lure you in with their promises of good health that their cook book does not support, and all the information you need is on their website.

The entire series of Bragg books and products will save your life! Jack LaLanne states; "he would have been dead at age 16 if he had not attended The Braggs Crusade". He is a product today at age 90, of how living the principes of Patricia Bragg and Paul Bragg, M.D. Ph.D is mere proof. Must read the entire series, if you want to feel good and stay forever young.

Almost impossible to find a better book..........2006-03-09

This book is amazing. Paul Bragg is amazing. Everyone who hasn't read this book should read it immediately. It is for everyone. It will open your eyes to the truth -- we are responsible for our own health. We are not victims. If we're sick, it's our fault. It's not because there is some kind of virus or popular disease that is going around. We decide what goes into our bodies. We decide to eat things that are just not for us, like dead animals and bleached breads.

If you're sick of feeling sick, read this book! If you've ever had a headache, read this book!

My family's life has been strongly influenced by Bragg's books. My mother was very sick from a disease that could not be cured, or so said the doctors. She was allergic to medicine. After reading this book and eliminating "foods" like meat, eggs, almost all dairy, and baked foods, our family was on the way to healthy living. I was 4 years old at that time and haven't been to the doctor since then, except for yearly check-ups and one incident in which I faked a fever in order to skip a test (the doctor believed it). Because of the unbelievable complete recovery of my mother, and excellent overall health of our entire family, we too have begun influencing others and setting an example. Today I am a happy raw foodist. I eat 100% raw plant food. I love it and the raw food diet is the closest to natural living.

I love looking at this book. However, being a novice quilter and not having made any of the quilts in this book, I don't know if the directions are great or what. What I can say is that the pictures are great, the designs are wonderful, and the typography is easy to read.

I was able to see most of these quilts in person, and all I can say is WOW! As a Thimbleberries lover, I was thrilled with the designs. Many of them are from previously published large size patterns, but Lynette does a great job at making them 'pint-size' and choosing such wonderful fabrics for each of them. This is one of my most treasured TB books (and I have them all!)

Ruth is the author of this collection of memories and her sepia-tinged prose is full of personal stories that create a scrapbook-like profile of her mother that spans Ruth Bell's childhood in China to her current role as family matriarch in North Carolina.

A LEGACY OF LOVE is certainly sentimental, but it hovers above schmaltz by including many of the lessons Ruth Bell taught her children that garnered her such keen admiration in the first place. One gets the sense that Ruth Bell was a woman with a lot on her mind, most of it relating to her faith, and she was eager to pass that faith-filled perspective along to her children.

"Mother was sitting with a visitor and me looking out at the patch of lawn in the front of our house and the few sentinel pine trees growing up above the lawn from lower ground. Mother told us that, originally, she and my father had planned to build our home at a lower spot on the mountain, about where those pine trees were standing. In order for the house to have a view, Mother and Daddy would have had to cut those trees down. Daddy was open to doing so, but Mother was not. Apparently, the property's original homesteader had carried the trees as saplings on his back all the way from Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. Mother could not bear to feel the trees after such a sacrifice.

To solve the problem, Mother explained, she and Daddy simply decided to build the house at a higher point on the mountain. 'I find that to be a good way of solving problems,' she said to us without batting an eye. 'Just move to higher ground.'

It was as if she had pulled a new adage out of thin air!"

Ruth goes on to say that such matter-of-fact, didactic moments punctuated her growing-up years with unbelievable frequency. Her mother was able to extrapolate little lessons from life easily and naturally without sacrificing her sense of empathy and compassion.

That Ruth is able to capture her mother's spirit so beautifully is itself a legacy of her mother. Ruth Bell has a well-documented love of writing, and it's a passion she passed down to her namesake. On her 13th birthday Ruth was given a green leather journal with pages edged in gold, "a grown-up book" in which to record the events of her life. And one suspects it's the discipline of journaling, developed at a young age, that allows her now to recall the days of her life and the lessons of her mother so vividly.

"I have found that writing --- particularly journaling --- is much more than chronicling events. As I imagine must be true for Mother, writing helps me clarify my thinking and get perspective on life. I do record events, but then I try to apply Scripture to those events. I ask God to reveal himself to me in the details of my circumstances as I write them out, and I listen for his voice. I may come to my journal with a jumble of disconnected facts and perceptions; but once I am finished writing, I often have a much better understanding of both what has happened and what perspective I need to adopt," writes Ruth.

Along with memories and lessons learned, the pages of A LEGACY OF LOVE are populated with family artifacts and pictures of the Graham clan taken through the years, including some shots of Ruth Bell in China as a young girl. Summer Study Abroad in Venice, Italy.......2007-07-18

This book was unfortunately minimally useful in the limited time which I had available to study it. Our study abroad program was only one month and since it was my first time in Europe and we were allowed to travel on the weekends you can imagine that this book did not get the same level of dedication which my regular year law books do. Although the books format does not seem very organized, I think it could be a thoughtful, well-considered read if given the proper amount of time to study it.

disappointingly poor biography of a great singer.......2000-07-31

Leonard Warren was certainly one of America's greatest singers, ranking only after Merrill & Tibbett when it comes to baritones. In the 40 years since his death on stage at the Met during a performance of LA FORZA DEL DESTINO this is the first full-length biography devoted to him. Unfortunately, he deserves better. Much better.

After having read other books by the author, I was surprised at the ill-flowing, disjointed narrative here. She relies far too much on family recollections instead of objectivity. She repeats the story of Jan Peerce's anger at Warren's cobersion to Catholicism far too often as well as relying on Warren's sister. The recollections of fellow artists are few, of little importance, and were made mostly in conjunction with articles written decades ago. Except for some anonymous recording sessions in 1940, early in Warren's career, there is nothing about later sessions when he made his complete operas. Did he just show up, sing, and go home? Usually there are interesting stories to repeat (they could have at least borrowed Culshaw's about the GIOCONDA sessions). Likewise, there is no comment on why Warren was used only once by Toscanini. Did something happen? Were Valdengo or Merrill easier to work with than Warren? The author is silent. She also spends an inordinate amount of paper and ink huffily asking why Warren didn't progress faster to stardom at the Met - then answers he own questions by telling about other (and far more seasoned) artists like Tibbett & Bonelli, both of whom had senority over the newcomer Warren.

The index is worthless since there are no references to any of Warren's roles or even an entry for "Warren, Leonard." Are researchers expected to plow through this badly-written book for themselves?

The discography is also poorly organized and touts commercial releases plus those sponsored by the Warren Foundation, a release of VAI from the 1940 sessions and their own 2-CD set. Other issues, especially a superb 2-CD set on Romophone or a competing CD of the 1940 sessions on Minerva, are ignored or merely mentioned in passing.

By the way, anyone interested in the 2-CD Warren Foundation set might first look on their shelves. Except for 4 tracks, everything is already available elsewhere. They missed an excellent chance to use live material.

It may be a long time before we get anotehr Warren biography but this one isn't worth the time or effort.

this isn't the book we expected or deserve.......2000-06-28

It seems American publishers today are reluctant to touch any opera singers aside from three aging tenors. Amadeus Press is the notable exception. Stars such as Astrid Varnay, Martha Modl, Hans Hotter, and James King have had to turn to German publishers. In that atmosphere we opera fans should be happy to get ANY biographies of great singers. And, regrettably, this is probably the only biography of Leonard Warren we are likely to get for some time.

I use the term "regret" because Warren deserves a biography worthy of his stature as one of the finest singers America has produced. This isn't it. The writing style is more appropriate to a series of magazine articles than a smooth-flowing narrative. The content smacks more of a fan than an objective author. Too often we are bombarded by phrases from reviews and family memoirs. Why quote a family "review" of a Met performance that had Met manager Edward Johnson "almost falling out of his box" and a "five-minute ovation" when the newspapers presented a more restrained demonstration? The author also takes many pains to ask why Warren wasn't given starring roles earlier in his career when a more objective author would have been aware of the serious competition at the Met with Tibbett having considerable seniority as well as popularity. There are many aspects of Warren's career that the auhtor ignores (presumably because there was no family member present) such as the one concert with Toscanini and why Warren was never used again by Toscanini. Was Warren's arrogance at fault there as well? Recording sessions are ignored except for the first anonymous 1940 sessions. The index is terrible and almost useless. Entries are confined to names only, no works - and there is no entry for "Warren, Leonard" which limits this book as a reference. How are researchers to look up specifics about his life or career? They can't. Very lazy! The discography is equally difficult with such tables as combinations of studio plus "selected" live performances and studio sessions that include not only the complete operas but every time these were used in excerpts. The discography also fails to include several CDs of Warren's material (such as Minerva and Romophone that apparently compete with the 2-CD set from the Leonard Warren Foundation).

Reality check on the writing life and female relationships........1998-06-11

Definitely worked for me--I related to the author's struggles trying to survive as a feminist writer, and resolving the ambiguities of life, death and female friendships. Reminded me of May Sarton's journals but more "no holds barred" in that the author seems to relate her experiences without sugar coating. Left me with the impression of "self-indulgent" tone yet still was insightful. I found the time jumps in Ms. Sinclair's writing intrusive at times. Overall the prose is poetic, particularly when relating to nature/gardening. Followed the theme beautifully and metaphorical connection right on. I know a book works for me if it lingers long after I have finished it.
