Book Description

Victory of the Allies was no longer in doubt. Russian forces had reached Berlin. Yet, Hitler ordered his troops to keep on fighting. Among the last who defended his headquarters, an underground bunker in the Reich Chancellery garden, were boy soldiers, 13 to 17 years old, members of the Hitler Youth Volkssturm (home defence force). The dictator had reached the point where he wanted the earth scorched. Facing total defeat, he now was willing to sacrifice everything and everybody, including the German people, even the youngest. Lehmann was a witness to what happened in the Fuehrerbunker. He was the runner who carried some of the last orders issued by the dictator, right up to his suicide. Many details as described in this book have never before been disclosed. This is a gripping story of survival - and later of redemption - a story of endurance amidst the horrors and brutalities, a first-hand historical account, already highly acclaimed by leading historians.

5 out of 5 stars An important read for all........2007-07-17

Mr. Lehmann's writing shows us how henous things comes to be. For those without sin, cast the first stone. I truely beleive this book shows how one of the most evil men came to rise without resistance, only to move on to become one of the most evil man in history. We can only refrain from repeating the past by learning history's lesson. Excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars A reflection of life.......2006-08-16

I've often wondered what I would have done as a youth, given the Nazi dominance in Germany during the 1930s. I was always obedient as a child, so I empathize with Armin's experience. I can see ME in his actions, his pride, and his resoluteness to protect the Fuhrer.

To his credit, as other reviewers have stated, he was able to honestly appraise his upbringing and bring his soul to a place of passionate resolve to help the rest of us understand and resist the type of hatred that Nazism stands for.

I will not criticize him for any hsitoric inaccuracies. It is clearly his personal experience that is the core of this book. It is well written and a testament to the belief that personal insight can lead to positive changes in a cynical world.

3 out of 5 stars Fact or fiction?.......2004-04-03

Having read a great many Eastern Front and last days of Berlin accounts, I can't just can't be certain of Lehmann's account.

It seems unbelievable to me that he was a part of Hitler's last public appearance outside of the Bunker, an appearance of which we know photographs do exist - see Hitler Youth, The Hitlerjugend in War and Peace 1933-1945, by Brenda Ralph Lewis, Spellmount, 2000 p185 - and yet there is not one photograph of the event (or indeed any photographs of Lehmann except for 1946 and 2000 pen portraits) contained in the book. For such a keen young photographer, it seems almost as unbelievable that not one of his photographs (or his family's) has survived and/or warranted inclusion in the book.

Finally, having received a shrapnel wound as serious as he seems to depict in early 1945, I find it hard to accept the account of his recovery. He goes from continuing severe pain on walking and fever only days before his release from hospital, to contiuing pain while standing on a train to his grandfather's house on leave, to no mention of any continuing side effects only ten days later when he rejoins his original Kampfgruppe.

Fact or fiction - your guess is as good as mine when you compare this seemingly incredible account to works from Sajer, Voss, Koschorrek or Zoepf.

5 out of 5 stars pleasure to read.......2003-11-02

You would -very much- enjoy this book for the following reasons:
* It is very informative. It is a social analysis of the Nazi Germany. You come to understand everyday life in Germany and how they (especially the younger ones) were indoctrinated, why they supported Hitler, even in the desperate final days. "We were willing to forgo our lives, as a sacrifice for Fuehrer and fatherland". "In the great scheme of things, we had been taught, our individual lives belonged to the nation. Not for us to live on, but for the nation to survive".
* It is an easy read. The book was divided into many chapters.
* Well-written. It reads almost like a novel. Other than the historical information, the author writes about his personal experiences which are not related to history that's being written around him, like the chapter "love and lust". These personal stories don't take away from the book or become a distraction; they add literary beauty.
Overall, very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Lehmann teaches important lesson.......2003-03-19

The very idea of recognizing the validity of anything an admitted Nazi had to say was anathema to me: A Holocaust refugee who landed in America at age ten.

But, Hitler's Last Courier is making a difference. The message of the book is a magnificent paean to the honesty and integrity of the writer.

Armin Lehmann gives us a picture -- in meticulous, almost overly zealous, detail of how the Nazi machine worked in Germany. Idolatry of Hitler took over, became stronger than any religion, and all participants involved cheerfully allowed themselves to be brainwashed.

Little kids judged each others blondness, parents skillfully eliminated any non-Aryan ancestors from family trees. Armin Lehmann omits nothing. He even translates every military and youth-group term into English so that the reader will have a complete picture of the Nazi hierarchy.

As a youngster, it seems that duty and obedience -- part and parcel of many unsuccessful attempts to please his judgmental "SS"father -- were major priorities. And, on he went, to become a teen-age soldier, earning two Iron Cross medals for heroically saving his fellows even when he, himself, was grieviously wounded. His reward, at age 16, was being assigned as Courier in Hitler's final bunker.

So, why celebrate this book, this gray recount of Nazi bureaucracy, of Hitler's propaganda machine, of worship at the Nazi altar? What is there to gain from such an exposition?

In a word, everything!

Because at age 16, when Armin Lehmann was shown the carnage of the extermination camps, the residue of the ovens, the skeletal remains of both the dead and the barely living, he underwent a change that took charge of the rest of his life.

From that moment, he became a fierce advocate for non-violence, for peace, and a dedicated enemy of all hatred. And he has never stopped. He has given his heart and his soul to erasing even the most remote possibility that any kind of hate movement could ever arise again.

He pulls no punches, makes no attempt to deny guilt, fully accepts the karma that has painted his destiny as an activist.

This man is to be respected. Hitler's Last Courier was written for a reason. At this point in time, at this juncture between peace and a possibly deadly World War III, we must all heed the message his message.

This book is for all ages. Every potential skinhead, racist, Aryan Nation member, and homophobic kid on the block needs to read it, learn from it. History, in fact, does not need to repeat itself.

Book Description

The correspondence between Hannah Arendt and Karl Jaspers begins in 1926, when the twenty-year-old Arendt studied philosophy with Jaspers in Heidelberg. It is interrupted by Arendt's emigration and Jaspers's "inner emigration, " and it is resumed immediately after World War II. The initial teacher-student relationship develops into a close friendship, in which Jasper's wife, Gertrud, is soon included and then Arendt's husband, Heinrich Blucher. These letters show not only the way both philosophers lived, thought, and worked but also how they experienced the postwar years. Since neither ever dreamed that this correspondence would be published, and each had absolute trust in the other, they reveal themselves here - for the first time - in a personal and spontaneous way. Brilliant, vulnerable, forthright, Arendt speaks about America, her adopted country. About American universities, American politics from McCarthyism to Kennedy, American urban decay. She speaks about Germany, the country she left: its anti-Semitism, its guilt for the Holocaust, its politics. And about Israel, which she always supported as a Jew but also criticized, especially in her controversial book about the trial and execution of Adolf Eichmann in 1961. In his dialogue with Arendt, the thoughtful, generous, concerned Jaspers considers the question of the German essence, and of the Jewish character. He speaks about philosophers past and present - Spinoza, Heidegger. About old age and retirement. Corrupt journalism. Suicide. Man's future on this planet. Here is a fascinating dialogue between a woman and a man, a Jew and a German, a questioner and a visionary, both uncompromising in their examination of our troubledcentury.

5 out of 5 stars Nice considerations of when these people should sound off.......2006-01-26

I have found CORRESPONDENCE 1926 - 1969 of Hannah Arendt and Karl Jaspers to be enormously entertaining, easy to read, and surprisingly foreboding about problems in the book trade caused by foreign indebtedness. Politically, each date brings chilling summaries. For Hannah Arendt in America, on June 3, 1949, "At the moment, the general political atmosphere is dismal here, particularly at the universities and colleges (with the exception of the very eminent ones)." (pp. 136-137). This letter 90 has several notes on pages 714-715 which give details that are sure to be humorous now for anyone who has ever heard of Aspen, where the leaves all turn at the same time because the roots are interconnected, as perjury suspect Libby Scooter informed New York Times reporter Judy Miller in a letter urging her to end her days in prison and testify in 2005 so an investigation of White House activities relating to the identity of CIA WMD analyst Plame could be resolved quickly. According to this book, Hutchins, the president of Chicago University, was the nominal organizer of a two-week conference and Goethe celebration in July 1949 in Aspen, Colorado, attended by José Ortega y Gasset, Albert Schweitzer, Ernst Simon, Stephen Spender, and Thornton Wilder. Letter 90 was a response to articles that had been written by the "Bonn Romanticist Ernst Robert Curtius, 1886-1956," (p. 714) who would also be at the conference:

"The real power behind it is a German-American, a real-estate dealer, who recently bought up a ghost town and then had the commercially brilliant idea of tying Goethe into his business. His sole motive is to exploit Goethe to make this town world famous, so he can then make a bundle of money from tourists. The whole thing is really quite marvelous. The second backer, however, is a less amusing figure: Do you remember Bergstrasser from Heidelberg? After he had successfully accommodated himself to the regime, it was shown that he had a whole string of Jewish ancestors. He is the real moving force behind this program." (p. 136).

Curtius had published a polemic in Germany on April 2, 1949 which accused Jaspers of making "our collective guilt so plain to us that we can continue to live only with a guilty conscience. A Wilhelm von Humboldt of our time, he laid out guidelines for German universities, until he turned his back on them. ... He is crowning these national pedagogical efforts with a `campaign in Switzerland' that is directed against Goethe. Habemus Papam!" (pp. 714-715). In response to the comments of some Heidelberg professors, Curtius replied on May 17, 1949, and finally on July 2, 1949, with a title, "Goethe, Jaspers, Curtius." (p. 715). `Die Zeit' might be to blame for that title, which reeks of arrogance.

In any event, books in those days were considered significant enough that the move by Jaspers to Switzerland, as advised by Hannah Arendt on June 30, 1947, (when Jaspers was giving guest lectures in Basel), "we would do best not to settle down too permanently anywhere, not really to depend on any nation, for it can change overnight into a mob and a blind instrument of ruin" (p. 91), which made publication of books by Jaspers much easier, was resented by Germans who had already spent the money those books would earn. America was a great place for books by Jaspers to make money, and Hannah Arendt did her part to make sure that the translators selected by the publishers were able to express what Jaspers was saying in some form of English that readers could understand. Sounding like an American, Jaspers wrote on July 20, 1947:

"We are living in paradise here. My wife is already cutting back at table for fear of putting on weight." (p. 93)

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and Intellectually Engaging.......2001-09-01

Jaspers and Arendt cover everything and everyone: Sartre, Heidegger, Marx, Goethe, Camus; post-WWII Germany, "the infinitely complex red-tape existence of stateless persons," the Cold War, the "senile" Eisenhower administration, Eichmann, totalitarianism, the atom bomb, local democracy--it's all there. So too is a life-long, extremely close friendship between people who weathered a war from different sides of the globe, who faced cold war terror in radically different ways, who loved their spouses intensely but felt somehow separated by differences in world-view tracable to ethnicity(Gertrude was ethnically Jewish and Heinrich was ethnically Christian). Her admiration of him, her intellectual debt to him, her love for him; his seeming amazement at her vivacity, his admiration of her intellect, his cold, German form of love--and the walls cracking, and his sentiment sometimes pouring through.

It's a warm book up until the very last entry, Arendt's address at Jaspers' funeral. That's enough to send a shiver up your spine--but only if you read it in the context of everything else.

5 out of 5 stars More Than a Correspondence - A Dialogue.......2000-12-11

In 1926 Hannah Arendt was a student of Karl Jaspers at Heidelberg University. What began as the questions of a student to her teacher in 1926 blossomed into a friendly correspondence that ended with Arendt's forced emigration from Nazi Germany to the United States, with a stopover in France in the 30s, and then resumed in the Postwar years completely transformed into a rich, detailed dialogue between colleagues and friends, taking on a father-daughter feeling in many of the letters.

It was during the years after 1945 that the two examined everything about their world and themselves. Of particular importance were the dual issues of German guilt for the war and, for Jaspers, what it meant to be a Jew, for not only was Arendt and her husband Jewish, but also Jaspers's wife. This issue becomes intertwined in their conversations about the future of West Germany, the Suez War of 1956, and Arendt's trip to Jerusalem to cover the trial of Adolf Eichmann. When they shift the political into the personal, Martin Heidegger, a colleague of Jaspers and a teacher of Arendt, is there for taking. The passages concerning Heidegger are quite gossipy at times and lend the reader a voyeuristic look into the private worlds of Arendt and Jaspers. It's almost as if when things get dull and weighty, a little dirt about Heidegger adds just the spice to make the letter memorable.

The other strong point of this book is the portrait Arendt paints of politics in 1950s America, succinctly analyzing the Eisenhower (and later Kennedy) Administrations, describing the collapse of the cities in the 60s, and the "pointless" war in Vietnam. It's almost as if a mirror were held up to history, as insights about those turbelent times pour forth from every letter dispatched.

An invaluable book, not only for those interested in the scholarly events of the times, but for anyone interested in the history of the times.

I have recommended this book to all of my friends and sister. My husband is currently reading the book. It is my opinion that all husbands should read it!

The Pause is absolutely the best book I have read on Perimenopause and Menopause. I went through menopause quite early (36!) and found this book to be very helpful. Perhaps because I was younger and was going through it more quickly I found some of the other books that focus on the emotional and "spiritual" aspects annoying. Just give me the facts Mam, and this book did just that. First she explains the physiology in a very understandable manner. Just that information helps you to understand so much. Then she goes into each symptom, explaining what you may experience and giving you ways to cope and possible treatments. She explains what your doctor would most likely recomment (HRT etc.) and she also recommends herbal and alternative therapies that other women have found helpful.
Before puberty we are taught what to expect. When we become pregnant the doctor gives us reading material on what to expect. This is a must read for women to understand this next stage in their lives.

I asked for and received this book as a birthday gift. It was an excellent choice. At first I thought the recipes somewhat intimidating. A closer examination proved me wrong. The directions are as clear as can be, and suggestions in the side boxes are interesting, helpful and appropriate to the recipe. While I won't be using the recipes calling for fresh truffles or caviar (and they're very few), I will be trying out many others. The Seared Tuna on Creamed Spinach is worth the price of the book. The Black Pepper Polenta was perfect with it, but plain rice or coconut rice is very good, too.

                5 out of 5 stars Perfect Food.......2000-04-26

I met Hubert here in Brazil, and I love his food. The recepies were written carefully (Chantal, his wife tasted them all! ). I have a cooking school in São Paulo and so far I have not seen anything like him. His food is so elaborated in terms of taste and so simple in terms of wook. It is light, but with a lot of taste and charm. When you taste it, you will never forget!

5 out of 5 stars Great modern French Food.......1999-10-19

I have to admit that I think Hubert Keller is one of the best chefs in the world, and his restaurant should have 3 Michelin stars. This is one beautiful book, and the receipes, while not for the beginner, are not difficult for the average cook at home. I have made many of the receipes and have found them all delicious. I also enjoyed Chef Kellers' story of growing up in Ribeauville and his professional history working with some of the best chefs in the world. Having taken cooking classes taught by Hubert, I can also say he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. From one Alsatian to another, thanks Hubert for a great book, and Vive L'Alsace!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, recipes may be too difficult for amateurs........1999-05-27

The photos in this book are dreamy, and the recipes are colossally imaginative. BUT ... many home cooks will find it difficult to recreate most of the dishes that Keller successfully renders at his restaurant, Fleur de Lys, and many ingredients will be challenging to find. The explanations of many classic French cooking techniques are top-notch, however, and the writing throughout the book is very, very good.

                  Book Description

Today's kids want furniture that is funky and unique, not Mom and Dad's stodgy old antiques. And while they don't have the budget to buy trendy pieces, they do have something else: a creative, do-it-yourself attitude. Turf will inspire 20- and 30-somethings to create one-of-a-kind works of art that are functional as well. Featuring 25 projects, designer Anthony Garay shows how to:

-Build contemporary chairs, tables, and accessories, along with a nightstand, an armoire, and a bed frame, using only a limited number of tools

-Use wood with unconventional materials, including pipe, trashcans, crates, acrylics, and recycled items

-Transform ready-made items into something new with easy-to-grasp skills

Illustrated with a mixture of unique hand-drawn illustrations and photos, Turf makes a hip coffee table book as well as practical furniture manual.

4 out of 5 stars great ideas, inexpensive and very easy to understand!.......2007-09-09

being a poor college student, i wanted to create something inexpensive and unique. there are many ideas in this book to branch off from and assemble with a touch of your own style. aside from chairs, stools, armoire, shoji screens, coffee tables and t.v. stands (which are all really neat + easy to build), you can also create appliances! i love the way he is detailed in the tools you need and 3d illustrations to assemble the pieces.check out this book and start tinkering!

5 out of 5 stars Great Find and Helpful!.......2006-12-12

First I'd like to say this is a very informational book for those on a low budget but like art deco style furniture. As a former college student, I know how hard it is to manage day to day life on a budget, and still have nice things in your home. Well if you follow this book, you will get some nice things (especially like the wine rack)!

As for those who wrote a bad review because the author had an "attitude," I don't think there is any pettiness involved in reviewing your own book. It's a great accomplishment! Before you go about giving someone's book that you haven't even read bad reviews(which isn't even fair!), write your own, come back and let us tear apart all your [years] of hard work.

                  Good job author! 5 stars!

                  3 out of 5 stars Very Masculine.......2006-04-20

This book has a lot of ideas. Being a designer, artist, and a person who generally likes to build things I bought this book as well as the Readymade, DIY, and Todd Oldham books. I also own many other more technical books. This book, as well as the others is good for people who like to make things but arent comfortable deisgning. It is also good for people with very little money and a lot of time. However, I did not like this book personally for a few reasons. This is not to say this is a bad book, because it isnt. I am female and as much as I value my already pretty masculine minimalist asthetic, the designs in this book are extremely male. Very "Home Depot" and not for me. There were some cool ideas that I would embellish on though and that is great. The problem I have with all of this generation of D.I.Y. books is the look is very slipshod, and sometimes very junky. I think this book does a good job over some of the others of making pieces that are actually structural and can be used, but a few are hardly practical. The designs for seating seem horribly rigid even the models in the photos look uncomfortable. So in summation, this book is not a bad, or poorly written book, but a book really intented for a college aged group of dudes that want some cheap furniture they can have fun and throw together that will give them a "Steal this room" look to their pad.

                  4 out of 5 stars Cool Stuff.......2006-01-25

This book is aimed at a super specific target market, so it won't be everything to everyone. I'm a little out of the $50 or less dormroom furniture stage of my life, but I still found some things in here that are useful. I realled liked the wine rack and the palette coffee table is probably the coolest coffee table I've ever seen.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes DIY projects.

5 out of 5 stars I thought is was great.......2006-01-24

Well, maybe this is just my glass-half-full attitude shining through, but I thought that this book was very successful at doing what it set out to do. I'm not sure how someone could be disappointed in it-- no book can be all things to all people, and I thought that this one did a nice job showing how to use common, hardware store materials to put together some funky furnishings. There was nothing I really would've changed, and I'll admit to being a design junkie who gets a little cynical from time to time. Will I run out and build every project exactly as it is shown? No, but I read a lot of design books and there isn't enough time in the day to actually build everything that's out there. What I really got out of the book was some specific advice for building stuff with this kind of urban, artsy, creative edginess and I will definitely refer back to it in the future.

I think it helps to keep an open mind and view this book as general inspiration, in addition to containing instructions for specific pieces. I'm sure that a lot of people will find this to be a useful guidebook, whether they want to follow the directions step to step or just get ideas in general.

                  1 out of 5 stars Big disappointment.......2002-12-06

The fact that this was in the Wayside Gardens series mislead me. When the book arrived I discovered that it was written by a Britisher for the British gardener and that 3/4 of the plant material was not useable in the mid-Atlantic region.

The pictures are sumptuous, but the content is just not relevant for the American gardener - unless, of course, you are on the Pacific Coast!

4 out of 5 stars A MUST read by every parent who wants to understand their child!.......2007-05-30

I loved this book! I purchased this book when my son was 4. I wanted to know how he thought and what made him tick. It wasn't much good to me then. He wasn't developed enough in his personality yet for me to see the behaviors of each style. He is now 7 and this book has helped greatly!

He was starting to stuggle in school this year. He kept falling behind in class, wouldn't get his work done, easily distracted, very social, etc. I had paragraphs highlited and wrote his name in. There were things in there that fit him to a "T". C.U.T. notes in her book that no one is specifically one learning style. I have found that it depends on the subject with him. In phonics, he's auditory, in math he's visual, etc. The big deal for me was that I finally understood how he PERCEIVES his world!!! He's global and random. Once I got the definitions of what those were, we got a long MUCH better. I am the polar opposite of him and there were many times we seemed to be speaking two different languages. This book, for us, was like having a translator.

One note: We have not discovered his environmental preference. I'm not sure he's developed a pattern for me to discern this yet, but I'm sure it will come as he gets older.

I can see why some said that the book was out of context, but for now, it's one of the best books out there, even if Gregoric doesn't believe in applying it to children across the board. Everyone changes and develops and different levels and stages in life. What we might do and not think about at 17, we would rethink at 30. All in all, though for us, it's been a LIFESAVER!!

4 out of 5 stars BONUS I learned about ME!.......2007-03-13

So, I bought the book to understand my child's learning style. Instead, I learned about mine. Is that so bad? No, not at all. I still can't classify my son's learning style. Oh well....

5 out of 5 stars What an eye-opener!.......2007-03-12

I purchased this book to help with my son who is 5 and really struggling. I got a very thorough lesson in the learning styles of my older children. I had my children draw pictures of their ideal study conditions and was blessed to be able to fulfil those drawings. The result? Homework done in record time each night with better classwork during the day.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-02-06

Highly, highly, highly recommend this book. It explains in a very easy-to-read format how everyone has a different way of taking in and processing information. This should be a must read for all teachers and administrators. In order to effectively reach all students, we are going to have to change the way we are teaching to reach ALL learners. This book explains in very concrete terms why some children "seem" to do better in school than others. Great book.

                                      Book Description

In the first comprehensive study of Frederic William Cumberland (1820-1881), Geoffrey Simmins traces Cumberland's career as architect, railway manager, and politician, providing a richly detailed history and analysis of his contribution to Toronto's urban landscape.

The architect of such prominent buildings as the University of Toronto's University College, Osgoode Hall, and St James's Cathedral, Cumberland was devoted to building the Victorian dream - optimistic and materialistic in its outlook, yet also spiritual in its basis. His diverse interests and accomplishments make him an important figure in Canadian architecture and in Victorian studies more generally.

Of modest origins, but fuelled by ambition and talent, Cumberland emigrated from England seeking new opportunities. Favourable family connections provided him with an introduction to leading members of Toronto society, and he and his wife, Wilmot, formed long-lasting associations with such prominent families as the Ridouts and the Gzowskis. Drawing on letters and other archival materials, Simmins shows Cumberland to have been a witty, intelligent man, an acerbic social critic, a loving father and husband, and a respected businessman and politician who became a confidant of Sir John A. Macdonald. Through the mists of the Victorian past, a powerful and energetic figure emerges, a man of vision, tenacity, and commitment.

The book is divided into three parts. Part One establishes the context of Cumberland's life and times. Part Two is devoted to examining his architectural career. Part Three consists of a catalogue raisonnT of all of Cumberland's architectural designs.

                                        Book Description

Broghill's years of political influence included a distinctive initiative in Ireland in the early 1650s calling for limits on army power, religious radicalism, and urging closer ties with England; domestic reforms and keen promotion of the Cromwellian regime in Scotland, of which he was president during 1655-6; and in 1656-7 the introduction of the Humble Petition and Advice, which sought to re-establish a civilian state, with Oliver Cromwell as king. Cromwell's refusal of the crown marked the beginning of the end of Broghill's political aspirations, and here these years of influence are seen in the context of the rest of his life, especially his early years as understudy of his father, the 1st earl of Cork, and his later life, as earl of Orrery. A thematic section deals with Broghill's private motives: the importance of his extended family, his financial situation, and, above all, his deep religious beliefs. PATRICK LITTLE is Senior Research Fellow, History of Parliament Trust.
