Book Description

Adolf Hitler trusted few men, but his faith in pilot Hans Baur never wavered. Baur, a decorated World War I flier and one of Germany’s leading commercial aviators of the 1920s, joined the fledgling Nazi Party in 1926. His skill and daring and his early party membership, catapulted him to the top of the list when Adolf Hitler went in search of a pilot for his political campaign of 1932. Later, Hitler became the first head of state to use air travel extensively, and, from 1932 to 1945, Hitler refused to fly with anyone but Baur at the controls. Baur ate meals with Hitler frequently and was one of the fuhrer’s few true confidants. As the tide of war turned against Germany and relations between Hitler and the Luftwaffe leadership deteriorated, Hitler increasingly relied on Baur for advice about air war policy and technical developments. In the end, Baur paid for his blind loyalty to Hitler. Trapped by the Soviet Red Army in the war-torn city of Berlin, Baur was captured after Hitler’s suicide and imprisoned in the Soviet Union.

Aviation historian C. G. Sweeting provides the reader with fresh insight into the inner workings of the Third Reich and the madness of Adolf Hitler. The book details many surprising episodes, such as the time Baur allowed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini to take the controls of the fuhrer’s plane, and an account of Hitler's and Baur’s narrow escape from a German air base as Soviet tanks arrived at the perimeter. Aviation buffs will also enjoy the author’s in-depth examination of the aircraft used in Hitler’s personal transport squadron. Hitler's Personal Pilot is a unique book that will fascinate both experts and novices on Nazi Germany with its detail and perspective on Hitler’s infamous inner circle.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting But Disturbing Book.......2006-12-30

Any book that provides a first-hand look at Adolph Hitler during World War II is always appreciated. In the last few years we have seen a number of English translations of Germans books written by individuals such as Hitler's Air Force and Army adjutants and his personal secretary.

"Hitler's Personal Pilot" is another well written and interesting work that adds to our knowledge of the German leader at war.

It is clear from the very beginning of this book that Hans Baur thought very highly of Hitler. Only later in the book does he begin to have doubts about the Third Reich's ability to win the war of aggression the German unleashed on Europe and the world. Captured by the Red Army after Hitler commits suicide in Berlin, Baur suffers through a number of years in Soviet prisons before he is finally released. But, like too many Germans after the war, he refused to believe the Holocaust ever happened and carries his high regard for Hitler to the grave, telling his wife that the German leader was one of the greatest men in history.

This statement attests to Hitler's ability to weave a spell over those that worked closely with him, despite the fact that in the waning days of the war, with defeat assured, he refused to release most of them from his service, ensuring their violent death.

Author C.G. Sweeting manages to put Baur's views in the proper perspective, but he is at his best when writing about the various aircraft used to transport the Fuehrer and their development.

This is thus a very interesting but disturbing book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting supplement to Baur's own autobiography.......2002-11-09

This is an interesting examination of the life of Hitler's pilot, Hans Baur. He lived to be well into his 90's and was a fascinating man who had unique access to the Fuehrer. Baur was in Russian captivity for 10 years and wrote his autobiography after being released in 1956; the book is the basis of much of the material here.

Baur met Hitler in 1932 and began flying him at that time. He was part of the Obersalzberg inner circle, as well as the Berlin crowd, and he knew Eva Braun fairly well. He also begged Hitler in 1945 to allow him to fly him out of the Bunker, but Hitler told him he had to die in his nation's capital, not at his Bavarian vacation home!

The book concentrates, naturally, on Baur's relationship with Hitler and others in the Nazi hierarchy. It is weaker on Baur's life post-1956, especially his years spent in retirement on the shores of a Bavarian lake. Still, for anyone with an interest in the inner workings of Hitler's entourage, this is an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly researched and written military biography.......2001-05-23

Hitler's Personal Pilot: The Life And Times Of Hans Baur is a fascinating, "insider's" account of the inner workings of Adolph Hitler's Nazi inner circle from the perspective of the only person that Hitler flew with through World War II. When the tide of war turned against the Germans, Hitler often turned to Hans Baur for advice about war policy and technical developments. Baur, blindly loyal to Hitler, was captured and imprisoned by the Soviets. Aviation historian C.G. Sweeting's Hitler's Personal Pilot is a superbly researched and written military biography that along with providing an informative picture of the air equipment used by the German air force of the time, also provides fresh and welcome insights and perspectives on the homicidal and suicidal men who were the principle architects behind the horrors of the Nazi regime and who led Germany to its destruction.

      Book Description

This strikingly original work by Jørgen Bukdahl, first published in Danish in 1961, explores Søren Kierkegaard's relationship, both in the abstract and in his everyday life, with "ordinary" people.

Seeking to undermine the stereotype of Kierkegaard as socially aloof and politically conservative, Bukdahl finds him to be fundamentally interested in and concerned about the plight of "the common man." In the course of his discussion Bukdahl does a thorough job of contextualizing Kierkegaard in mid-nineteenth-century Denmark, shedding light on Kierkegaard's relationships with his family, various religious groups, and the leading intellectual figures of his time. Bukdahl follows the trajectory of Kierkegaard's thoughts on the common man from his earliest writings through his battles with The Corsair and on to his untimely death. Throughout, Bukdahl examines the role of Kierkegaard's Christian faith in shaping his attitude toward the common man and social relationships in general.

Kierkegaard scholar Bruce H. Kirmmse here provides the first English translation of Bukdahl's book and has included many helpful additions—a biographical introduction that fills in the details of Kierkegaard's life, endnotes that identify the many little-known figures referenced in the text, and a preface that explains the context of the book and its author. Kirmmse also includes a bibliographic guide pointing readers to English translations of all of Kierkegaard's writings. This new information and Bukdahl's own colorful style make this an accessible and highly useful work for scholars as well as students new to Kierkegaard.

          Book Description

A groundbreaking book explains what really causes Attention Deficit Disorder.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has quickly become a controversial topic in recent years. Whereas other books on the subject describe the condition as inherited, Dr. Gabor Mate believes that our social and emotional environments play a key role in both the cause of and cure for this condition. In Scattered, he describes the painful realities of ADD and its effect on children as well as on career and social paths in adults. While acknowledging that genetics may indeed play a part in predisposing a person toward ADD, Dr. Mate moves beyond that to focus on the things we can control: changes in environment, family dynamics, and parenting choices. He draws heavily on his own experience with the disorder, as both an ADD sufferer and the parent of three diagnosed children. Providing a thorough overview of ADD and its treatments, Scattered is essential and life-changing reading for the millions of ADD sufferers in North America today.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding and insightful.......2007-05-07

Being both a doctor and having ADHD I found this book both informative and insightful. The concepts of both nature and nurture are seemlessly interwoven to provide an excellent perspective on causality as well as direction for treatment.

Having a past personal interest in child psychology lent me familiarity to many of the concepts the author brought forth in his book. If his ideas seem 'cooked up' you are mistaken. The author is quoting cornerstone teachings of well known developmental psychologists.

One must realize that research into ADHD is still evolving. Whether or not causality can be determined in each specific case, it does not detract from the author's direction in treatment (whether through family therapy, psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy). More specifically, ADHD may in fact arise in 'functional families' but the requirement for ongoing support/'unconditional positive regard' remains pivotal.

But one should realize this is not a 'How to Book' nor a brief synopsis. With all that aside...... an eloquent book which made me laugh, cry and take heart.

          5 out of 5 stars Scattered.......2007-01-12

This is the first book on the subject that explains some of the newest research regarding ADD. The author, despite being a doctor, writes with the individual affected by the disorder in mind. It's easy to understand and finally gives the ADD person some real insight and background on the origin of the disorder. His personal experiences including his family history help the reader see a full picture of the affects of ADD.
This book should be a must read for any person newly diagnosed or affected by someone close to them affected.

5 out of 5 stars The book I turn to for in-depth understanding on ADHD.......2006-01-17

Five years ago, I picked up this book and, mesmerized, read it in one sitting. With content so rich and insightful, I felt perhaps I should stop and absorb each chapter before continuing. Yet Mate's elegant writing was too captivating and flowing to put down.

Today, it is the book in my extensive ADHD library that I turn to when I need reminding of the core concepts, such as "counterwill," Mate's term for oppositional defiance. So many other books about ADHD float on the surface or focus on medical treatment options. While I would be the last person to minimize the importance of medication -- I've seen in too many people medication's dramatic effects and their immense gratitude -- there is so much more to understanding ADHD.

For example, here is an excerpt on Counterwill:
"Children with attention deficit disorder are often characterized as stubborn, oppositional, cheeky, insolent, spoiled. "Wilful" is a description almost universally applied to them.... ADD children can hardly be said to have a will at all, if by that is meant a capacity which enables a person to know what he wants and to hold to that goal regardless of setbacks, difficulties, or distracting impulses....

"...Counterwill is an automatic resistance put up by a human being with an incompletely developed sense of self, a reflexive and unthinking going against the will of the other. It is a natural but immature resistance arising from the fear of being controlled. Counterwill arises in anyone who has not yet developed a mature and conscious will of their own. Although it can remain active throughout life, normally it makes its most dramatic appearance during the toddler phase, and again in adolescence. In many people, and in the vast majority of children with ADD, it becomes entrenched as an ever-present force and may remain powerfully active well into adulthood. It immensely complicates personal relationships, school performance, and job or career success."

          [...]

Passages such as that completely unlocked the door to understanding for me. When it comes to ADHD, I've learned, what's "obvious" on the surface seldom holds water under close scrutiny. Despite having read dozens of books and articles on ADHD, I've not seen this perception on counterwill expressed and yet, from my observation, it is bedrock truth. And, it is only one of the profound concepts Dr. Mate exlains.

As for the nature/nurture issue, we know so little about genetic expression. Last time I looked, at least 7 genes, in various combinations and subsets, are thought contributory to ADHD. Perhaps it will be 10-20 years or more before we understand this highly heritable condition. I do know many mothers of children with ADHD who say that, even in utero, the child was clearly hyperactive. Some cases are less clear-cut. There are no hard and fast answers here.

That said, recent genetic studies reinforce Dr. Mate's theories, showing that the presence of a "behavior"-related gene does not guarantee its expression. For example, the recently discovered "shyness" gene seems to express in children who have it only under stressful conditions. (You can read more about this in a Jan 2006 Wall Street Journal's "Science Journal" column.) The idea is not to make parents feel guilty, as some have suggested, but to expand our knowledge and help future generations of children as much as possible. For instance, the epigenetic factors are good reason to encourage parents of children with ADHD to undergo screening for ADHD themselves. Studies have shown the often deleterious effect of living with a parent's untreated ADHD.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Thesis, But Not Helpful.......2006-01-11

Dr. Mate provides an interesting thesis, but it just doesn't ring true. We have counseled thousands of children with ADHD, including hundreds which came from stable, two-parent homes where the parents were very in tune with their child.

Parents don't need this guilt trip. What they do need are practical solutions and steps to cultivate their child's natural gifts, talents and passions. This is what breeds confidence.

We use Kirk Martin' Celebrate!ADHD paradigm in our practice, and it has worked wonderfully for both parents and children. Kirk Martin has been called the "ADHD Super Nanny" and we'd recommend his E-Courses and Book, "Celebrate!ADHD" before you read "Scattered." You can find free tips and a newsletter at the celebrateADHD website.

It's difficult to endorse Dr. Mate's work when his underlying premise has so many flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the most original book about ADD & most ignored.......2004-10-27

Mate offers a very fresh, insightful interpretation of ADD as a cognitive vulnerability that may or may not manifest itself, or manifest itself in varying degrees depending on one's environment. In this sense, the book takes a ecological approach to the problem; ADD, according to the author, is not biological determinism and it's not cultural construct and it's not some conspiracy to keep certain children in their place and it's not a pharmaceutical ploy for more business. Anyone who has taken prescribed Ritalin knows it's about the cheapest prescription drug on the market (and has been around nearly the longest). The author simply points out that according to current and provisional informed research (and research can only be provisional unless we can stop time), the idea that symptoms of ADD are a result of many forces--chemical, environmental, cultural, and developmental--just makes sense. Since Mate's analysis is moderately complex in comparison to most analyses in most popular ADD books, it may turn off those who want a quick pat explanation to the "disorder." The author is a doctor with ADD; so his analysis is both research oriented and phenomenological. He is also smart enough not to use the word "prove" in his book because he knows he isn't proving anything: he is simply making his own best inferences based on current knowledge. He makes sense; and he adds to the current literature on the subject. If you have been diagnosed with ADD, you will nod your head in agreement through much of the book. The author also has a gift for writing, having been a former English teacher. Thus, his language is on a level of sophistication which does justice to the subject, and lends his observations authority. This is far different from the "cookbook" breezy style of so many other authors who address the subject.

Like her late compatriot Jacques Cousteau, French marine biologist Anne Collet has traveled the world in search of exotic denizens of the deep. Unlike the apparently imperturbable Cousteau, Collet has no difficulty admitting that her encounters with some of these creatures have terrified her. "Make no sudden movements, and stick together," she instructs her companions while swimming after a female right whale. "She must not think she is surrounded. Animals detest that. As long as she feels safe, we have nothing to fear." Adds Collet, wryly, "I don't know if I managed to persuade them; it was hard enough to convince myself."

In this memoir, a scuba-mask view of the world below the waves, Collet recounts her adventures in studying whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals under a variety of conditions, some of them full of peril. That peril, however, concerns all: most of the species she has studied, she warns, are in grave danger, not least because of the all-but-unimpeded use of pelagic trawl nets by commercial deep-sea fishing fleets, which kill five to ten thousand dolphins a year in the Bay of Biscay alone. With their steady disappearance, marine ecosystems begin to unravel, and Collet warns urgently that action must be taken now if the sea--and, by extension, the planet--is to be brought back to health, its terrifying residents included. --Gregory McNamee

              Book Description

Anne Collet has ridden the tail of a white whale - for ten seconds off the coast of Argentina. She has taken children diving in the Azores to see dolphins and led teenagers on ocean voyages. And she has heard the song of beluga whales in the Arctic Ocean. In Swimming with Giants, Collet describes the power and majesty of being close to some of nature's most magnificent creatures. Combining science with a sense of adventure, she conveys the sheer excitement of her work with marine mammals, from the sublime gaze of a whale's eye to the race to save animals harmed by pelagic drift nets or toxic spills. A contemporary ecohero in the tradition of Jacques Cousteau, Collet is an inspiration not only for the many who have accompanied her on her research trips, but also for those who will see in her journey a call to follow their own dreams.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is amazed by the creatures of the sea and wants to learn more. Anne Collet is a very inspirational person. She has a great desire to futher the world's knowledge of the species and inspire others to follow their heart and pursue dreams of research or scientific study.

                3 out of 5 stars Basic whittling.......2007-08-15

Now I just recently started woodcarving and my wife bought me this book as a gift. I must say it is an interesting book for what it covers. Basically the author shows you how to pick out twigs and branches to make the birds featured in this book. The cuts seem basic and with a glance at them it seems that it would just be a matter of practicing to duplicate his work.

If you go camping and want something to do around a camfire, this might be the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Too limited to be worth it........2007-05-07

What you see on the cover pretty much is the whole book. The book mainly shows how to make a few birds. Not worth buying in my opinion.

For anyone who likes to go for nature walks and collect twigs and branches and do some whittling with them, then this is the book to get.
Easy to follow and read, very good.

                5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" whittler's book........2005-11-30

I recently purchased this book after seeing Chris Lubkemann demonstrate his rooster carving techniques on the FYI channel. With the help of this book and a little previous wood working experience, I was able to whittle three roosters and a hen from branches collected in my own yard. This book is a tidy, complete, well-illustrated user's guide to whittling twigs and branches. He provides clear step-by-step instructions, and openly shares his opinions and experiences with various types of wood, knives, finishes, etc. As with all really good reference works, I find myself going back and forth between whittling and re-reading the book. I learn something new with each closer look at these pages. Lubkemann's rocking chair philosophy explores what an average person can accomplish with a twenty-dollar pocket knife and a few branches that are absolutely free. I applaud not only his uncluttered approach to this noble craft, but his genuine desire to pass it along to anyone who is interested. An aside: this book is an excellent gift idea for anyone interested in folk art, woodcraft, or chickens.

The following is quoted from the book..."Before there can be universal peace founded upon respect and appreciation of different ways...we will first have to inspire people to seek reunion with family members and friends. For as long as people willingly accept the brokenness of precious relationships, there can be no hope for a worldwide day of healing and peace."
This book alone will not provide all the answers (no book can) except for the Old/New Testaments. I would encourage anyone dealing with complicated relationships/situations to seek out any avenue of help...counseling, friends, extended family, etc. Another good book for reading is "Irregular People," by Joyce Landorf Heatherley.

I ordered this because Klein is a rabbi and I figured that the book might provide some extra meaning for this nice Jewish girl, but I found it rather weak in terms of content and offering little in the way of practical advice. ...Robert enright's book, "forgiveness is a choice", is much much better
                  and very practical.

                  3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.........2002-06-06

This book assumes that the person who have wronged us does have good intention which we might have overlooked, in which case, it would be easy to forgive. But I think readers are looking for more than that, and I definitely agree with Rachel's view. Sometimes, you just want to forgive, but you might not necessarily want to reconcile with that person, especially if that person is still continuing his hurtful behaviour. There are many other books about forgiveness that have this information. However, if you are just looking for ways to forgive someone who has wronged you and they now feel sorry about it and are seeking for your forgiveness, then this might be a book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible, thoughtful, and helpful.......2002-04-28

I had the chance to happen upon this book in an alternative bookstore while I was on vacation. I ended up curling up in a chair and reading the thing from cover to cover. From there I set about making contact with everyone I had "excommunicated" from my life for various reasons: friends, family, etc.

All of the people I reached out to were so grateful to hear from me and it feels great to have put down the burden and made friends with people I care about. Two weeks after I made peace with my parents, my stepfather passed away. The knowledge that he knew I had forgiven him was of great comfort as I grieved, and it helped my mother and me become closer too.

As a result, I just bought three copies of this book to give to family members struggling with this issue. I highly recommend it. It changed my life, for the better.

White paper border throughout the book, that is, no full page photos except the front and back dust and hard covers. The book is an overview of his work from the beginning of his career to the end. Most of the photos are exteriors. About 8 of the photos are b&w. There's about 14 b&w floorplans and about 4 color architectural drawings. There's about 5 photos of furniture he designed. There are only 3 pages of text only and they are in the Introduction. There is a photo of a chapel and of a skyscraper that Wright did not design that are present to make points about his work. There's a description of each photo and pretty much a paragraph of text on almost every page while most pages are dominated by photos. The text reads like a textbook, not terribly dry but not a fun, easy read.

This truely is a retrospective of his career, mainly in photos. As such, it is an excellent introductory book and I am happy to own it as part of my collection of large FLW photo books. I didn't have to pay full price for it which I'm glad about. It is quite nice really. I think as I'm reviewing it I want to change my rating to a 4 but the relative brevity of it and the exclusion of any photos that take up the full page prevents me from doing so. Otherwise, quite enjoyable.
