Book Description
A completely revised and updated edition of the best-selling and award-winning guide to keeping children healthy
Over a million and a half families already use Taking Care of Your Child to help keep their children healthy. Updated with the most recent research and recommendations, this award-winning guide discusses common medical problems, as well as emotional issues such as new siblings and school challenges. The authors even provide forms for medical, growth, and immunization records. And unlike other children's health books, this comprehensive guide is useful from birth through a child's adolescence.
Taking Care of Your Child is easy to use, even in a crisis. Simply look up a symptom, and you find a complete explanation of probable causes, how serious they are, and how you might quickly relieve your child's problem at home. Easy-to-follow decision charts show parents exactly when to take a child to see a doctor. This book covers more than 100 common complaints-injuries and allergies, childhood diseases-with especially clear advice on handling emergencies.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Informational Book.......2007-09-05
This is a great guide. I received my copy in 1977 when my daughter was born. I used it for years! Loved the flow charts. Definately eases the panic of parents. Explains so much! I have bought several copies of this book-first for friends in the 70's having their children, and now the updated book for the next generation of new parents....our children having children.
Doctor in the House.......2007-08-15
This book is like having a doctor in the house. My pediatrician took me more seriously when I called because I only called or visited when it was truly necessary. This book is so helpful in the way it works you through the problem and informs you of what to expect when you do have to visit the doctor. I highly recommend this book to new parents; it will give you more credibility when you visit the doctor and you are not seen as an anxious new parent.
Taking Care of Your Child:A parent's Illustrated Guide to Complete Medical Care.......2007-08-09
I bought this book 27 years ago when I had my first child. I loved it then and love it now. I give it to every expectant mother I know. Our doctor was surprised that a new mom would know exactly what to ask and what information to have on hand. It has an easy to follow format with questions and guidelines for the taking care of your child. The book helps the parent know when to call the doctor or when to head to the emergency room. The book of course has been updated but the information from my original book is just as valuable. I still use it today to answer those important questions...virus or bacterial infection?
Great for first time parents.......2007-06-13
This book is a great reference source for first time parents. I used the first edition of this book many years ago and loved it. It was the first book I thought of giving to my son and his wife after the birth of their first child.
Best Book Ever.......2007-05-26
I received an early edition of this book when my kids were young, and it got me through some tough times. I've been giving latter editions as gifts to new mothers, who are as pleased with it as I was. What I like best about the book is its flow chart format. For example, "does your child have a fever?" Depending on your answer, it directs you to additional questions that help you decide whether to call the doctor immediately, call for a future appointment, watch for additional symptoms, etc. Very easy to understand.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best.......2006-11-28
One of the best child care books out there, grappling issues from the simple diaper rash to internal bleeding.
The BEST book for "taking care of your child".......2005-09-22
This is an excellent book for new parents. I just love the flow charts which are great when you need answers in a hurry.
Wouldn't have known how to raise them without it!.......2005-03-11
I received this book as a freebie, part of a very smart corporation's plan to get their employees to take better care of themselves and their children, presumably, of course, to thereby lessen the overall insurance burden.
Never-the-less, with the probable exception of the dictionary, it's been the most referenced book on my shelves over the last 15 years since my first child was born. I treasure its simple wisdom and sensible approach and it has helped me both to ignore certain complaints and to act quickly upon others during that time.
As for the rather embittered review which claims it's full of dangerously misleading information, I'd have to disagree (although it's important to note those comments were made in reference to feeding issues, an area -- unlike meningitis, for instance, or a fall which resulted in a jagged bone protruding -- in which there's still a fair bit of debate).
No, it shouldn't be used as a sole source of information, nor should it completely replace your own good judgement AND instinct. However, for any number of every day ailments and injuries that any parent will encounter with their children, its generally sound guidance will be most welcome in helping you arrive at a conclusion whether to phone the doctor or not.
Being a parent is often enough like playing pin the tail on the donkey in the dark -- this book, however, WILL shine a bit of light where you might need it most.
Every parent needs this one.......2004-06-18
I'm delighted to see that this book is still available. My copy is 27 years old and was such a constant in our house while the kids were growing up that it still holds a place of honor on the bookshelf. Okay - the fact that their heights and weights are charted in the back on the growth graphs might be part of the reason... It prevented countless unnecessary phone calls and trips to the pediatrician, but it's more than just a "baby book". Even when the kids were teenagers, I was still consulting it to determine whether a medical problem required immediate attention or could wait until Monday morning. And the book was always right! The kids are in their twenties now, and when it's time, I'll buy them the updated version of this classic for their own families. At this price, it's a wonderful investment in peace of mind and a good night's sleep.
25 Years Ago..........2004-04-28
...when I was a young parent, I bought this book and it was extremely helpful to me. With a new baby, it's hard to know sometimes if the illnesses and symptoms kids get are really dangerous. This book is packed with information about illnesses and conditions, plus, it gives you an easy method of determining whether or not your child needs to see the doctor. I'm going to buy a copy for my "children" now, so that they can use it for my grandchildren!
Customer Reviews:
definatly worth it.......2002-03-01
I already have "Take Care of Yourself" and I worried that it would be essentially the same information-- trust me its not, this is an excelent resourse for a home with children. It also includes a section on Parent Skills which covers Pregnancy, Labor, newborn care, growth and development, personality development, school, finding a health care provider, staying healthy and your home pharmacy. Then theres the section of common complaints (emergency, injury, poison, allergies, fever, ect.) And the third section is a space for family records. I'm glad I have both books, but I'm most glad I have Taking Care of Your Child. It was definatly worth it.
A definite for the parent, give it as a gift.......2001-06-21
We too, received an earlier version of this book back when our first child was born. We have used this book so often the pages are worn down and out and we needed a new copy. We were both surprized and happy to see many more editions have been released and updated since our copy. We had absolutely no hesitation in purchasing a copy. We have used this book more often than anything and is a constant companion, also when we go on vacation. This is a great gift to give a first time parent and is very basic for the non-medical people in your household. An all round great book for reference and reading. Each area describes in detail the symptoms of common medical problems. The hospital should give you a copy of this book to every parent when they leave the hospital. I guess we will wear out this book too any buy another in 12 years.
BEST book for a new Mom and Dad! I couldn't live w/out it!.......2000-08-18
I was a typical new Mommy in May of 99. I would panic at the smallest things in my son. This book lists various symptoms of ailments and has a decision tree as to when you must call the doctor. This prevented me from making unnecessary calls to my advice nurse and doctor's office. I LOVE this book and will give a copy to all my friends who are expecting or already have a new baby.
A CLASSIC - THE BOOK YOU'LL KEEP.......1999-12-08
It's been almost 18 years since I was given an earlier edition of this book. For those of us who have little patience or time for chatty anecdotes, the authors provide a decision tree for every sickness and problem you will probably encounter as a parent. The most remarkable aspect of this book is that it becomes a teaching instrument for your child - my daughter and I read the decision trees together, learning how to make decisions about a medical problem she was having. A copy of this edition is sitting on her bookshelf at college! She packed it, saying that she'll never outgrow it. Buy this for yourself or for new parents. They will thank you.
Giving this book is the one gift that will get used often!.......1999-11-29
I received the 1988 version of this book back when my first child was born. I have used this book more often than anything. It has been by my bedside for 8 years! Now that my brother and sister-in-law are going to have their first child, it is at the top of my list of gifts to give them. There is a wealth of information for the new parent. It describes in detail, what the symptoms of common medical problems are. Even if you don't know what is wrong with your child, it prompts questions of you that help you figure it out.

Healthy Southwestern Cooking.......2007-09-15
This cookbook is great, we love southwestern food and most of it is loaded with fat and salt, all the reciepes are great with taste and health in mind, reducing the fat and salt in the food actually enhanced the taste, more of the true tastes of the food, recently after eating out at our favorite resturant, I could taste the salt in the food and it didn't taste as good as what I make at home with this cookbook
Time for another version, Wiseman.... Get too it!.......2003-02-27
What a great book. It's been on my list of favorites since it first came out. Now that I've used up all the recipes - and some are my all-time favorites - I would like to see another on the same subject. By the way, when will Wiseman find a way to devise low-fat tamale recipes? Maybe the publisher should tell him to "Get after it, boy."
Just another believer in the power of the chile pepper.
Too much preparation.......2000-06-14
Looking for low salt recipes and didn't feel they for very low. Also, most ingredients were not in my pantry. Too much prep time.
Wonderful recipes and great layout.......1999-04-21
The recipes are great and tasty - easy to prepare and never fail to please the palette.
This cookbook is well designed and the photography is luscious and mouthwatering. I highly recommend this book for all kitchens and gift-giving occassions.
It's a winner..........1996-09-20
"If you enjoy Southwestern cooking, but are concerned about salt and fat content in your diet, Wiseman's book should be on your kitchen shelf. It's a winner." Lane Rogers/Reviewer - The Tombstone Epitap

Dwarf Rabbits make wonderful pets for children. This book presents information on what you need to know before purchasing a rabbit and its history; housing and care; and establishing a mutually beneficial relationship. Here too are tips on protecting dwarf rabbits from household hazards, and much more. Hardcover / 180 Pages / 6 5/16 x 8 15/32 / 1997
Customer Reviews:
Should definitely read before getting a dwarf bunny.......2004-12-25
The book's design and photos are very pleasing (& very cute!). The author offers much useful and easy to understand advice. If you're looking into getting a bunny or just became an owner of one, I highly recommend this book because it will make you & your bunny's lives easier. It gives you tips on how to bond with your bunny, what to do and what NOT to do with him/her. I made the mistake of not having read this book before raising my bunny. I did things that I thought were completely normal to do (I have 2 very small dogs & have had many animals before) but were totally inappropriate when it comes to rabbits. Just being caring and loving is not enough. You need to learn to care and love the right way to ensure a happy and enjoyable life for the both of you.
Dwarf Rabbits.......2002-06-11
I read the paperback edition, which I enjoyed immensely. The information is presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. The pictures are precious! The cutest rabbit in the world is on page 9, a purebred Thuringian dwarf. I wish I could find a rabbit like that one! If you read this book, you will definitely want a rabbit for a pet.
Unfortunately I was late!.......2000-01-26
I am sorry that I did not buy this book before I bought my rabbit. I wish I had read it before doing so many mistakes. I recommend you to read this book before buying this lovely creature, at least not to hurt it against your will.
This book helps you get started with your rabbit........1998-12-10
This book helps you get off to a great start with your new rabbit, great clor pictures and easy to read. I loved the pictures and the information was valueble to me I am now looking forward to buying my first rabbit this has helped me feel more confident about my decision.
A most informative read!.......1998-11-14
The color pictures are lovable and this book is simply brimming with information about how to take care of dwarf rabbits. Each section is informative and comprehensive. It certainly provided me with plenty of tips on rearing my dwarf rabbits.

Customer Reviews:
Worth it for the illustrations alone.......2007-09-06
This is a Rowan-published book, so naturally all the patterns call for Rowan yarn, primarily Cashsoft DK and Cashsoft Baby DK. I like Rowan yarns, so that's no big deal, but I didn't see anything to suggest they couldn't easily be substituted for something else. The intro says, "These 24 projects should make bedtime fun for any two- to five-year-old child!" and I expect that's true. There are blankets, toys (plus accessories!), bathrobes, slippers and bed socks, cardigans, tanks, vests, and hot water bottle covers all aimed at the pre-school crowd. The book contains no how-to section except for a short appendix of tips at the end. The appendix will be a must for me, as about 20 of the 24 designs use intarsia, crochet, embroidery, or some combination of the three. This is not a collection for those who don't have and aren't willing to learn these skills. What makes this book truly amazing, though, are the illustrations. I'm just in love with them. Instead of using models, each item is photographed and inserted into a hand-drawn illustration (e.g., the cover--the bathrobe, slippers, and doll are all actual handknits; the little girl is strictly two-dimensional.). The book is worth the price of admission for the pictures alone.
Queue-worthy: 4 toys and accessories, 2 cardigans, 2 pairs of bed socks, a tank, etc. I'm not into blankets, but pretty much everything else.
Why bother?: the hot water bottle covers. What is this, Victorian London? They're cute, but not useful for 21st-century America. Viva la central heating!
Conclusion: A winner, even if I never knit a thing out of it.
BUY IT! DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200............2007-02-08
Unlike so many other knitting books for babies and kids, this has creative, attractive patterns. No ugly pastels, no useless cutsie booties, no hideous hats, nothing that will embarrass the poor child in 15 years. None of that garbage. I make the stuffed toys and they are universally a hit. Buy this and Handknits for Kids. You will wear them out with use.
Cutest thing!.......2007-01-03
Such a lovely book. Old fashion and romantic. I did miss though some more patterns for kids clothing.
Colorful photos throughout insure interest and polished results........2006-11-07
AND SO TO BED... takes the theme of bedtime and provides handknits for girls and boys ages 2-5 in this sequel to HANDKNITS FOR KIDS. Full-page patterns and easy directions assume prior knitting experience and provide fun socks, a bathrobe for boys, toys, and more for this age range. Colorful photos throughout insure interest and polished results.

My favorite knitting book!.......2006-08-29
I have been wanting to knit bed time items for a long time. When I first heard about this book I knew I had to have it. The design and the beautiful pictures make it my very favorite knitting book to look at. I am almost done knitting the bathrobe in the cover. I love the fact that the items are so easy to make and yet very pretty. I want to make almost everything in this book. The main yarn used is ROWAN Cashsoft which is a little pricy but worth your money. Cashsoft is truly the softest yarn I have work with and it is very elastic and cosy. My only two suggestions for this book are: 1- Sizes go up to 5 years old (I wish it went up to 8 years old) I had to modify the pattern to create a bigger size for my daugther. And 2- This book does not have schematics. I can't believe they missed that. Nowadays, this is almost a requirement in all knitting patterns.
Besides that, I LOVE IT!, my daugther and I love to look at it in bed before going to sleep. We love to make up stories based on the beautiful pictures...
For the next edition; add little stories to it, schematics and bigger sizes, and this will be the most wonderful children knitting book ever!

Book Description
In late 1999, a headline in the New York Times read "Too Much of Good Thing? Doctor Challenges Drug Manual." The article described Dr. Jay S. Cohen's new report maintaining that the recommended doses in the Physicians' Desk Reference are too high for many people and are causing a slew of unnecessary adverse reactions, "ranging from dizziness and nausea all the way to death."
Drug reactions in hospitals are among the nation's leading causes of death, killing more than one hundred thousand Americans every year. What's more, the "side effect epidemic" causes many people-as high as 50 percent of those on blood-pressure medication-to discontinue treatment.
The problem, reports Dr. Cohen in this vital book, stems not only from poor research on the part of the drug companies, but from a deliberate effort to create easy, one-size-fits-all dosages that both appeal to doctors and produce artificially inflated effectiveness statistics.
In Over Dose, Dr. Cohen does more than expose drug company misdeeds-he shows consumers exactly how to monitor and control their own drug intake. He offers practical information on the potential dangers and safe uses of the nation's bestselling drugs, including Prozac, Claritin, Viagra, Lipitor, and a wide range of estrogen-replacement, anti-inflammatory, and blood-pressure medications.
Customer Reviews:
Overdose will Wake You Up to the Truth about MEDS!.......2005-01-29
The aphorism, the cure is worse than the disease, is an apropos motto for "Over Dose." Drug company policies rake in billions while harming the very patients they are meant to help. Dr. Jay S. Cohen opens more cans of worms than a fisherman could hook in his lifetime. The evidence is horrifically overwhelming - America is being overmedicated.
Dr. Cohen is not anti-medication; he advocates the reasonable usage of these powerful meds. His mantra is "start low, go slow." The well researched (53 pages of references) is adept at uncovering the shortcomings of the pharmaceutical companies and their adverse effects on the public - 46% of Americans take at least one prescription daily. Cohen shows how the drug companies' one-size-fits-all dosage is literally killing people. Nearly 300 people die daily due to a medication reaction. The dire facts keep on coming. The author's case against the drug companies is convincing.
Dr. Cohen's precise writing is somber. But the real sad part of this tragedy is how avoidable it can be. Dr. Cohen is equally effective in offering realistic solutions. He clearly states, "My goal in writing `Over Dose' is to provide you with informed consent about the unacceptable state of medication treatment today...to reduce your risks-and to begin to end the side-effect epidemic." "Over Dose" is a must have; the expose may alter you life for the better and perhaps even save it.

A Pharmacist has an "Aha Moment!".......2003-12-16
I began working in pharmacy in the late 1960's. I helped dispense drugs at a retail drugstore in my home town and I did the same in the largest hospital in Chicago. I kept it up at another hospital and then started "doing" it on my own when I opened my retail store in 1983. I read the manufacturers' package inserts and I followed the prescriptions as they were ordered - and I noticed that many people had problems with the "recommended" dose. Sometimes they got used to the dose and sometimes it had to be changed. In any event, the recommended dose was not always accurate accurate - it was often dangerously WRONG.
I don't know what I thought about all the problems with prescription drugs. I guess I just presumed the patients were overly sensitive, or just unlucky. I didn't often think too much about it - until I became aware of Dr. Jay Cohen and his "Case Against the Drug Companies." His shocking book is called "OVER DOSE" and it describes in good detail the dangers of relying on the manufacturers' package inserts to prescribe drugs.
This is an "eye opener" book and it angers me. How is it that we have this overriding desire to place the bottom line above decent care for health? There are some great things happening in medicine - all around the world. But I think that all the good can be quickly undone by hanging on to a misguided philosophy that insists that profits trump everything else. Its time for a change and Dr. Cohen is part of the changing process. I promise to do my part for change. One thing is to expose potential problems (like Dr. Cohen has done) and another is to encourage people to think about the issues (that's my goal). Please get a copy of this book. Read it and then think about what it really means. When we reach a critical mass changes will happen. You can bank on it! (pun intended)
Everyone should read this book!.......2003-01-17
Finally, someone has put into print an accurate and factual picture of what the drug manufacturing industry does to place profits way ahead of patient benefit and safety. Anyone who takes prescription medications should read this book. Maybe it gets a little too technical in spots for people not in the health professions, but there is plenty of excellent information and suggestions to make this a very valuable reference for consumer-oriented patients.
I am a doctoral-level clinical pharmacist, and I found myself in agreement with most all of what Dr. Cohen has written and recommended in this book. This should be required reading for every practicing physician, medical student, pharmacist, and nurse in the country. Medical schools should add this to their curriculum for all of our doctors-to-be to read before they take their pharmacology course and start their clinical training.
FDA and PMA Foibles Exposed.......2002-07-08
A valuable theme disclosing inadequate testing by the drug companies and woeful evaluations by the FDA of prescription drugs. The main thesis is well-taken: lower doses of many drugs could minimize side-effects, including death. Actually does not go far enough in exposing all the major drug classes that do not increase lifespan at all!
Also available from Amazon: Prescription for Disaster by Thomas Moore and The Nutritional Cost of Prescription Drugs by Ross Pelton and James LaValle.
Compelling read , should be required reading for drug makers.......2002-03-04
...I was intrigued by Dr. Cohen's basic premise. The drug industry tries to make drug dosing easy for doctors, but what about the patient? The one size fits all.. dosing is not consumer centric, and in the new age of the informed drug consumer it is about time consumers got their correct dose. Dr. Cohen is... pro-drug treatment for many conditions. He wants to have drug makers offer information and pill sizes for lower dose use. Why should a 250 pound man and 100 pound grandmother get the same starting dose. Yet that is what pharmaceutical companies do in their starting dose recommended. This leads to greater side effects and reduces the use of medicines, says Dr.Cohen. Well-written and easy to understanfd Dr. Cohen raises new opportunities for consumer centric companies interested in making drugs that can be used with less side effects. With poor patient retention and compliance by patients drug companies should be doing what they can to make drug treatment more palatable. Clearly, reducing the over dosing is one way to get greater compliance.

Book Description
A compelling story of racial self-hatred in America and of a black man who became a pariah among his own people--William Hannibal Thomas's transformation from a critical but optimistic black nationalist to a cynical black Negrophobe at the dawn of the twentieth century. The book opens a whole new perspective on the question of race in American history. Winner of the Mayflower Society Award for nonfiction. A major contribution to black intellectual history. --William Van Deburg, American Historical Review

In defense of William Hannibal Thomas.......2001-06-03
It is extremely racist for the author and other "liberals" to denounce William Hannibal Thomas for "betraying" his "race." Isn't "race" a fiction? A mulatto is not a Negro. Thomas was really no different from the average mulatto in his views regarding mulatto superiority and Negro inferiority. He was just more public about it. Even your mulatto "black" hero W.E.B. DuBois believed in mulatto superiority. What do you think his "Talented Tenth" was? Do you recall how DuBois described Marcus Garvey in the most perjorative racial terms because the latter was black and not mulatto?
If the liberal author condemns Thomas as a "race traitor," then he is indirectly endorsing the view of white supremacists who believe in white "race traitors." If "race" is not a biological fact, how can there be any "race traitors"?
In defense of Thomas and other Anglo mulattoes and mixed-whites who proudly reject the black stigma, may I ask why Latinos (also a mixed race, partially black group), Indians, Asians, etc. have never been condemned for the same "sins" of looking down on blacks and identifying more with whites? Mexican elites, for example, were willing to condemn blacks as inferior as long as Mexicans as a group could have the honored label of "white." Why don't they receive the condemnation and sneering that Anglos of mixed-race receive even when they just live their lives and make no statements on "race"? Why? Why don't liberals rejoice at THEIR misfortunes and proclaim that the uppity in-betweens had it coming to them?
Smith should condemn himself as a "racist" for promoting the "one drop" myth and forced hypodescent. As a liberal, he misleads people of good will into endorsing anti-mulatto racism as a defense of blacks. That is the source of the "race traitor" accusation against William Hannibal Thomas. He is being used as a scapegoat.
black critic savages own race.......2000-08-04
In words that only a white bigot could appreciate, william hannibal thomas uses all manor of invective to decry the condition of his own black race. In his book 'the american negro', published in l901 by macmillan, thomas decries the condition of what he still called freedmen, 36 years after emancipation. Ironically, in the decades before publication of the book, thomas had been a most intelligent observer of conditions for blacks in the post-bellum south. he pointed out the degradation that had occurred as a result of the violence and intimidation by whites, angry at the privileges they lost from the civil war. attempts at race redemption were thwarted at every turn and there was no better example than the life of thomas himself. Thomas had some education as he grew up in ohio, partially as a result of brief schooling in his teen years and the rest from the efforts of his mother. he fought courageously alongside both free blacks and newly-freed slaves in the civil war, losing an arm in the final months of combat. The turning point in thomas's life as well as those of his darker skinned brethren was the election of l876 in which the election of rutherford b. hayes was traded for the end of reconstruction, removal of federal troops from the south, and the betrayal of the negro by resumption of white rule for the benefits of whites south of the mason-dixon line. in the process, thomas lost a seat in the south carolina legislature he gained by public vote and soon had to leave the state because improprieties and scandal of his own making made him a fugitive from the courts. the author of this biography, john david smith, pulls no punches in describing the wayward and sometimes corrupt behavior of thomas, but also presents evidence to redeem the character of the man who was to become a target of black leaders across the country. in many publications and speeches as a minister, thomas decried the conditions of former slaves in the south. neoslavery is the term used by thomas to describe the loss of the promise of the war and war amendments in the decades that followed. education, training and land were what was needed, but thomas also felt that moral transformation from the degradation and dependence fostered by slavery was of the utmost need. yet thomas deserted his wife and children, leaving them on public assistance in philadelphia, and eventually found a new wife and settled in in a suburb of boston. it was there that all the frustrations and failures to achieve national fame as a leader of his race came to a head. the constant pain from his wound also is said to play a major part in the transformation from an observer and critic of race relations to an unrepentent cynic and enemy of his own race. web dubois makes the obvious point that what is important in thomas's book is not the content, but what caused a black man to foresake his own race, perhaps to gain favor from those who had driven him to write it by their own degraded behavior with the blatantly stated purpose of maintaining political, social, and economic hegemony in the south. Despite all this, thomas has something to say to twenty-first century americans, black and white. redemption for the african-american, and just as much for the entire country, does not come from political action and social improvement. the moral content of each individual must be transformed or regenerated or the bonds of slavery will not be taken all the way off.
An outstanding contribution to Black biographical history........2000-04-04
Black Judas provides the first biography of William Hannibal Thomas, who betrayed his race by writing The American Negro, an insulting attack on Afro-Americans. Black Judas examines the roots of Thomas' thinking and his transformation from an optimistic black nationalist to a man who attacked his race. The detail and in-depth coverage is invaluable.

An Enigma Wrapped in a Riddle.......2006-05-10
Oliver Cromwell will forever remain an engimatic figure as he was both a reluctant leader and a military dictator at the same time. Davis' look into his lifely is incredibly fraught with attempts to justify his actions as being for the overall "good" despite how much "evil" he committed. While I do not believe that this is a book to "condone the war in Iraq" as one reviewer put it, it is extremely biased and any researcher using it must be careful not to take everything Davis' says to heart. As my favorite English professor used to say, "Take everything written with a grain of salt." What is a fact is that Mr. Davis is an extremely well versed historian and expert on Oliver Cromwell. It can also be a difficult read if you have no interest in the time period, the man and feel no love toward Cromwell. Otherwise, it is something every European historian should own.
Oliver Cromwell, a man just misunderstood.......2005-07-05
I have always been interested in European history, particuarly English History. I bought this book with the hopes of learning objectively (or at least as objective as a person can be) about a truly forceful and powerful man. For better or for worse, Cromwell was certainly a tranformative individual in the course of human history.
I was disappointed in a big way. The author spends a lot of time trying to absolve Olvier Cromwell of any guilt, claiming that what's publicly known about Cromwell is simply the "Public" story.
So what was the great unveiling of knowledge that will exhonerate Oliver Cromwell? According to the author, well, he was a religious man after all. Somehow in the authors mind (and many other unfortunatly) being religious presupposes ethics, honesty and integrity - all in the name of God to massacre people. Are we to write-off all the misdeeds he did to his fellow man because he was religious? If anything, religion has been used against man as a weapon for cruelty, torture, subjegation and killings. According to the author the argument boils down to this: Cromwell was a religious man, like our illustrious president, Dubya, Who feels it necessary to translate the word of God for us plebians, and feels justified to act according to the messages he received. Its these dangerous justifications that have caused a great deal of danger to this planet. It makes you wonder how the Religious Right will one day interpret this invasion of Iraq.
A man who both knows and does........2001-07-20
Cromwell is an amazingly enigmatic figure in spite of an incredibly public career. He was revered and feared by the people around him to the point where they could not know him the way they knew each other - from the time he assumed the leadership of the English Revolution, he became an object of awe, a force of nature, a figure so much larger than life that he seemed above even the most extraordinary of his peers. This book goes a long way toward helping the reader understand Cromwell the man riding the crest of English history.

Book Description
An eye-opening re-evaluation of Cromwell's campaign in Ireland--that challenges all conventional interpretations of his actions. Oliver Cromwell's "scorched earth" policy allegedly contributed to the deaths of thousands, making him one of the most reviled figures in Irish history. But, is there any solid evidence for this conclusion? Period sources and eyewitness accounts may argue otherwise. "...an important book...scrupulous in [his] examination of evidence...assiduous in research and [he] quotes primary sources extensively. Above all, he understands that the past should not be judged by the standards and fashions of the 1990s."--Sunday Times.

Poorly Researched Bit of Propaganda.......2006-06-03
This book is an endless string of special pleading on behalf of Oliver Cromwell whose own letters betray him as someone who believed that the killing of Catholic non-combatants "gave glory to God."
On the one hand, Mr. Reilly reveals himself as thoroughly incapable of sifting and weighing historical sources. On the other hand, he does provide a pretty thorough summary of the main arguments of several generations of Cromwell apologists. This fact makes the book as useful for teaching logic and historical reasoning as it is useless for studying Cromwell's Irish Campaign.
Inventing a New Oliver Cromwell.......2001-08-01
This is a remarkable attempt to revise the accepted view of Cromwell in Ireland. For Reilly, a native of Drogheda, Cromwell was an honourable soldier who did not cause the death of a single unarmed civilian in his hometown. In Reilly's account Cromwell is a reasoned, enlightened "humanitarian" who has been the victim of his enemy's black propaganda. This is a startling thesis which, if it were true, would put generations of historians to shame.
It would be easy to ridicule Reilly's dreadful prose; his enthusiastic description of the McDonald's outlet in modern Drogheda will, unfortunately, remain with me for a very long time. Yet, the main weaknesses of this book are not stylistic, but historical. To be blunt, Cromwell: An Honourable Enemy owes more to Reilly's often expressed desire to "rehabilitate the memory of Cromwell in Ireland" than it does to any generally accepted rules of historical practice.
The author exhibits a profound unfamiliarity with the history of the English Revolution of the mid-seventeenth century. In his mind, Cromwell was a democrat, the leader of an oppressed nation which rose up against monarchical tyranny, thereby securing freedom and liberty. This was certainly the view of a number of historians writing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but it is an untenable position for anyone familiar with an undergraduate textbook written in the last fifty years. In actual fact, Cromwell was no more a democrat than Charles was a tyrant, and the English Revolution was not an expression of the popular will, but the product of a civil war fought between two small groups which were unrepresentative of the wishes of the population as a whole.
Furthermore, Reilly has chosen to write about perhaps the most controversial period of Irish history without consulting a single book or pamphlet dating from the time of the sack of Drogheda. Instead, he bases his thesis on extracts of contemporary sources reproduced, with varying degrees of accuracy, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As such, he makes a number of serious blunders, the most important of which concerns Cromwell's letter to the House of Commons after the battle at Drogheda. The original letter does not survive but the official printed version confirms that "many inhabitants" were among those killed by Cromwell's forces at Drogheda. If this pamphlet is authentic, Reilly's thesis is in ruins. He, therefore, latches onto a nineteenth-century, pro-Cromwellian book which claimed that these words do not appear in the original pamphlet. When it was subsequently pointed out to Reilly that they do indeed appear in the pamphlet in question, he was forced to fall back on another argument from a nineteenth-century defender of Cromwell; the incriminating words must have been added without Cromwell's knowledge, possibly by the printer of the pamphlet. Yet, Reilly provides no evidence for this assertion and does not explain why the printer might have done this or how he avoided punishment for accusing Cromwell of killing civilians.
Even among the limited range of nineteenth and twentieth-century books which he consulted,Reilly found a number of contemporary references to the slaughter of civilians at Drogheda. As such, he is forced to adopt a number of disturbing sleights of hand. He dismisses all accounts of the massacre which were not written by eyewitnesses. At first glance this is entirely reasonable, but when one considers the nature of the sacking of a town it seems churlish to discount all testimony written by individuals who spoke to eyewitnesses or survivors. For example, Reilly dismisses Anthony Wood's testimony that his brother Thomas, who served in the Cromwellian forces at Drogheda, had spoken on numerous occasions of his part in the killing of women and children in the town. Reilly denigrates Anthony Wood as a gossip, buffoon, and drunk, and suggests that we would be unwise to put much faith in him. Yet, if Anthony Wood is unreliable why does Reilly accept his description of the royalist governor of Drogheda, Sir Arthur Aston, as a reprehensible tyrant? The only logical answer is that Wood's description of Aston's character helps Reilly to explain away the fact that Cromwell's men beat his brains out with his own wooden leg after he had surrendered.
In other words, anything which tends to lessen the enormity of Cromwell's actions at Drogheda is accepted uncritically, while any evidence which implicates him in the murder of civilians must pass the highest possible standards of proof. Reilly explains away eyewitness accounts of civilian deaths by magnifying slight inconsistencies between them and by attacking the character and motivations of the witnesses themselves. Once again, Cromwell is innocent until proven guilty while his opponents are guilty until proven innocent. Finally, having, to his satisfaction at least, demolished the evidence against Cromwell, Reilly asserts that there is no contemporary evidence for the massacre of civilians at Drogheda. At times one cannot but feel something approaching admiration for Reilly's ability to deal from the bottom of the deck, but one cannot get away from the fact that he has done too little research to support his extravagant claims. He is completely unaware of John Evelyn's diary entry for 15 September 1649 which tells how he received "news of Drogheda being taken by the Rebells and all put to the sword." Neither is he familiar with a report in a newspaper named Mercurius Elencticus, dated 15 October 1649, which tells how the Cromwellians at Drogheda "possessed themselves of the Towne, and used all crueltie imaginable upon the besieged, as well inhabitants as others, sparing neither women nor children." Had Reilly been aware of these sources he would, undoubtedly, have found some grounds to dismiss them, but when they are read in conjunction with the numerous other accounts of civilians deaths at Drogheda there can be no doubt about what happened in that town in September 1649. This is, in short, a painfully bad book.
Jason Mc Elligott, St John's College, Cambridge.
An intelligent and very well researched book.......2001-07-28
Right from the start this work grips you and keeps you interested as it describes the movements by the 17th Century Parlimentarians; Monroe and Inchiquin & Co thoughout the country and also describes the sometimes uneasy alliance of the Irish Confederates (Eoin Ruatha O Neill) with the Royalists led by Ormond right to the defeat of Ormand at Rathmines in Dublin by the Parlimentarian, Michael Jones, which was indeed very welcome news for Cromwell's upon his arrival.
Just when you think you are getting to grips with the already complex story, there are betrayals, turn-coating etc to keep you on the edge of your seat.
A lot of light is shed on the figure of 17th Century History and for someone interested in History and fact and uninterested in emotional opinion, O Reilly, at one stage nearly had me feeling sorry for this man - though I would doubt that that had ever been his objective.
Having grown up - and admittedly not knowing a whole about Cromwell prior to reading this book - there must have been something embedded in my psyche, as there would be with many others here, in that when anyone mentions the name, you might automatically think, "That .... Cromwell" in what he had done in Ireland in 1649/50 and the legacy he left right up to the present.
O Reilly compares and contrasts very well the eye-witness and non-eye-witness accounts of the sieges (massacres) at Drogheda, Wexford, Ross and the rest of the New Model army's Campaign. For an Irishman it was difficult at times to hear that the only humiliation Cromwell really felt during his nine months stay in Ireland was given to him at Clonmel. So it could be dismissed that O 'Reilly - who himself, I believe hails from the lovely town of Drogheda is not out to vindicate Cromwell's actions, but he does show that Cromwell was indeed an intelligent soldier who carried out his orders to the letter. And also from the information in the book, if anyone had the idea that This New Model army were a bunch of sword swaggering morans that systematically slaughtered any moving thing in their way, one can see that he ran a very tight ship with a reference made throughout the book about his instructions to his regiments, 'that none of his troops are to steal food from local people.'
Great book, my only criticism of it would be its lack of maps.

Book Description
The continuing recrimination and violence which bedevils Northern Ireland today has its roots in the settlement imposed upon Ireland by Oliver Cromwell following the English conquest of 1652. By one estimate as much as five-sixths of the Catholic Irish nation died or was "transplanted" beyond the "Pale" in the decade following Ireland's surrender. Such is the stuff of the book at hand, John Prendergast's The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland. Of specific genealogical importance, the researcher will find: (1) certificates or letters of dispensation naming a number of the Irish exiles and their families; (2) various account books, arranged by barony, identifying several hundred Adventurers and showing the location and value of the Irish land they were awarded; and (3) a list of more than 1,350 Adventurers (or their widows), giving their occupations and subscriptions.

Gives an insight into the times of trouble........2001-03-02
"The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland" reminds us again of how the happenings in Ireland are inter-related to those in the rest of Europe and the rest of the world. A study of history teaches us the importance of Ireland, and those of us with Irish ancestry remember it with pride. Think of Thomas Cahill's book "How the Irish Saved Civilization" and how knowledge was preserved during the Dark Ages. It is a fascinating book, and it demonstrates how Ireland became a repository of knowledge from the ancient Christian world. If we "fast forward" some years, we see that for hundreds of years Ireland's greatest export was its people. At one time, I thought that the problems began with William of Orange and the fight against Stuart forces, and continued through the Potato Famine into modern times. "The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland" has taught me that the issue was much more complex.
One of the biggest causes of the troubles in Ireland resulted from the success of the forces of Parliament under Cromwell in the English Civil War against King Charles I. This introduces the element of Protestant versus Catholic, a theme that has continued to this day. It also introduced the problem of how to pay the victorious Parliamentary troops. How were they paid? The same way William the Conqueror paid his supporters who invaded England in 1066. To the victor go the spoils. Those who supported King Charles I were typically Catholic, whether they were English or Irish. Those who lost lands even included those who held ancient titles of nobility. The easy step was to take the property of those who supported the losing cause. However, the Protestant forces went further, taking properties of people who were politically neutral, including the property of those who were often incapable of such political support, including widows, orphans, minor children, and the like. The leaders and intellectuals of Ireland went to Connaught and to the four corners of the civilized world. The working classes stayed because then new landowners needed them. I feel that the Cromwellian settlement of Ireland was the foundation of the atmosphere of violence and hatred felt today in Ulster.
I valued this book for the information it contained. Many readers may find that it is a boring book. For those Irish of English ancestry, this book may have some genealogical value. For those Irish who want a better understanding of our history, this can provide real insight into the problems of the twentieth and twenty first centuries in Ulster.
