How I Earned The Ruptured Duck: From Brooklyn To Berchtesgaden In World War II is the letters and memoir of Leo Bogart, a WW II American soldier who was only twenty years old when he entered the army in 1942. His letters are enhanced with a narration that connects loose ends between them and builds into a cohesive picture of daily life in those hazardous times including the long periods of boredom and inactivity, which were offset by terrible violence and deadly conflict, as well as the sometimes troubling interactions with the defeated enemy after the end of the war. A very human and thoughtful memoire, Leo Bogart offers a quite personal and engaging viewpoint of cataclysmic events. How I Earned The Ruptured Duck is a very welcome contribution to the growing library of World War II military biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs.
Book Description
In the fall of 1998, one year after the death of Isaiah Berlin, the New York Institute for the Humanities organized a conference to consider his intellectual legacy. The scholars who participated devoted much of their attention to the question of pluralism, which for Berlin was central to liberal values. His belief in pluralism was at the core of his philosophical writings as well as his studies of contemporary politics and the history of ideas. The papers given at the conference and collected in this volume concentrate on three aspects of Berlin's concept of pluralism. Aileen Kelly, Mark Lilla, and Steven Lukes trace the development and consequences of his distinction between "hedgehogs," thinkers who have a single, unified theory of human action and history, and "foxes," who believe in multiplicity and resist the impulse to subject humanity to a universal vision. Ronald Dworkin, Bernard Williams, Thomas Nagel, and Charles Taylor examine how liberalism can be sustained in the face of Berlin's insight that equally legitimate values, such as liberty and equality, may come into irreconcilable conflict. Avishai Margalit, Richard Wollheim, Michael Walzer, and Robert Silvers take up Berlin's advocacy for the State of Israel and his hopes for it as a place where the often contrary values of liberalism and nationalism might find harmonious resolution. The Legacy of Isaiah Berlin includes not only the panelists' contributions but also transcripts of the lively exchanges among themselves and with audience members following each session. The two days of discussion preserved here demonstrate the continuing vitality and relevance of Isaiah Berlin's thought in today's social and political debates.

Writing about Isaiah Berlin is not the writing of Isaiah Berlin.......2006-04-28
One of the distinctive elements of the writing of Isaiah Berlin is that he made intellectual history exciting for the reader. His writing has a flair, a sweep a rhythm and way of connecting the story of a thinker with his ideas which keep the reader thinking and awake.
The essays here are more bland material. And even if in the consideration of Berlin's objective- value-pluralism they do raise 'hard questions' they seem far more 'academic' than Berlin himself was.
As for the section on Israel and nationalism I am not sure that they underline sufficiently how devoted a Zionist Berlin was.
A Tribute to a Great Thinker and Pluralist!.......2004-03-06
This book, which was published from a conference dedicated to discussing aspects of Berlin's emphasis on value pluralism, is divided into three sections. The first focuses on his pluralism as he saw it within history. The second takes his pluralism and speaks of it in relation to moral theory. The third discusses that pluralism as relating to the question of Israel and nationalism. Obligatory disclosure: I skipped section three as Israel is not a question that interests me, so my review is on the first two sections.
Now, anyone who's read Berlin knows that he is notoriously hard to pin down. He is to historical to be a philosopher yet to philosophical to be a historian. As one who wrote more historical studies than philosophical essays (in the proper sense) Berlin's thought is hard to synthesize. This book, though, does a good service by focusing on Berlin's central theme: the plurality of values and their connection to history and philosophy. See, for Berlin, no one system could account for our moral lives. Values, ends, means, these all conflict inter- and intra-personally. No system, said he, will resolve these so that they all line up and 'hang together'. Abstractions, too, like Liberty, are meaningless without a concrete context; liberty of what according to who's view? That pluralism is what this book discusses: the first part on its affect on Berlin's historical study, the second on his philosophy.
There is a great group of thinkers here: Mark Lilla, Michael Walzer, Ronald Dworkin, Thomas Nagel, Charles Taylor - on and on. The essays, more-or-less, form a consensus and largely find Berlin's pluralism unproblematic as far as its truth goes (the only article that takes issue is Dworkin's). Each thinker, though, has a different take on what accepting pluralism means and whether, if conflicting values is 'inevitable', how far we should go to TRY and reconcile them. That's where the fun is; in these small differences. I should mention to that each section ends with a 20-or-so page 'discussion' section that must have been transcribed during the seminar. We see a lot of good interchange here between the panelists.
All in all, this is a book that should not be missed by those that find value (or question) in Berlinian pluralism.

A Must for Grandparents, Parents and Kids.......2004-04-20
This book is for anybody who wants to teach important skills to children, whether you're a grandparent, teacher or parent. I bought Lesson One: The ABC's of Life for my daughter who is raising three children but I decided to read it first. I found the book so pertinent, not just for my daughter and my grandchildren, but for me as well. The book helped me reflect on my life and to see the importance of such themes as unconditional love and passing on skills through sharing life experiences. By the way... my daughter found the book invaluable as well!

Jon Oliver's Lesson One is a must read for not only educators and parents but for anyone looking for a concrete guide to promote human development. As a therapist his ideas of self-control, and personal responsibility are most relevant. What I like most are his suggested activities, which I have already utilized in several of my therapy groups, not only with children but adults. Sharing stories and even using television as an opportunity for important discussions are just a few of the book's practical suggestions. Wise Words From A Caring Thinker.......2004-03-13

Real food with 1 pan - a slim cookbook to stash in the truck.......2001-03-11
I bought this book for my husband's elk hunting trips. The book is only 1/2-inch thick, yet it gives lots of ideas for healthy cooking at camp (or offshore) when you reduce your cooking gear to only one pot or pan to save weight and space. The recipes are sorted by the type of pan best suited for them (fry pan vs. pot).
It discusses what mixes or preparation can be done before leaving home, how to pack the food for hiking, and how to rig a bear bag to keep the food safe from varmints. Mr. Jacobson even shows how to build an oven from a 3-pound coffee can. My husband likes the checklist of essential kitchen tools and spices.
For the non-cook, Mr. Jacobson has included recipes for scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs and fresh coffee. However, this little book also includes more exotic recipes such as Calcutta Chicken and Red-Eye Stew.
Mr. Jacobson's fare is geared to a 2-night outing, allowing him to carry fresh food rather than rely on dehydrated food.
It's a useful little book, one that stashes easily in the truck or boat. Camping out doesn't have to mean hot dogs and beans!

I am not a hunter, but I do have pet ferrets, and am fascinated with all aspects of the domestic ferret. In England, where an overabundance of rabbit warrens actually cause property and environmental damage, ferrets are used in hunting rabbits. McKay presents a wealth of information on training ferrets for hunting, the equipment used, retrieval of ferrets in rabbit holes, as well as more mundane matters such as where to hunt. Most of the photographs illustrate the points made in the accompanying text. The squeamish should be forewarned that this is a hands on book about hunting, and some of the photographs graphically depict dead bunnies and very excited ferrets, which is completely appropriate for the title. I found this book to be an enjoyable introduction into the art of ferreting, which is practiced almost exclusively over the water.

An Education In Model Railroad Layout Planning.......2006-07-10
The late John Armstrong is considered by many in the model railroad community to be the Dean of layout planning and now I know why. The tricks, tips, and explanations he gives are first rate and I understand so much more about layout planning and design such as why to use easements for curves and how to plan them (P. 18) or how to integrate crossovers into a simple dog bone layout for the best effect (use two, P. 30). Never have I seen any designs get more use out of space but at the same time keeping a regard for scenery and not looking "toy-like." I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it extremely useful.

Practical and smart projects.......2005-08-16
This book is a great companion to "Track Planning for Realistic Operation: Prototype Railroad Concepts for Your Model Railroad", also by John Armstrong. Unlike other layout plan books, this has many details on the operational aspect of these layouts, decisions on how to recreate in scale an specific prototype and notes that make the book a complete reference on these layouts, not only a set of plans gathered on a book with no further detail (which is exactly what we often see in layout books). Layouts range from small to larger size, so there's is inspiration for everyone inside, from begginer's to advanced modellers.

The title tells it all, "Available" Rhodys. Although it has an extensive section on the species that are the parents of our modern hybrids, this book concentrates on rhodys that are or have been in the commercial trade. That means these are the rhodys we have in our gardens--plants that are relevant to us! The picture quality is excellent. This is the book to use if you are trying to identify an unknown rhody, or have just a name and want to know about the plant.

This book is the 'bible' for rhododendron lovers. It is arranged so that you can find almost any rhody you see in seconds and read about the plants habits, hardiness, color, and for hybrids, it's parent plants. The photographs are excellent. There are sections on the history of rhododendron culture, care and feeding, and deseases of the plants. Our copy is so 'dog-eared' we're are going to have to buy another copy soon

This book was was a great resoucre. With her past, she seems to understand how people in these situations feel and think. I could definitely identify with her! Sometimes people dealing with affairs need support from someone who understands, instead of intellectual babbling from so called experts. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having "affair" problems right now.

Book Description
The cult of King Charles the Martyr did not spring into life fully formed in January 1649. Its component parts were fashioned during Charles's captivity and were readily available to preachers and eulogists in the weeks and months after the regicide. However, it was the publication of the Eikon Basilike in early February 1649 that established the image of Charles as a suffering, innocent king, walking in the footsteps of his Saviour to his own Calvary at Whitehall. The figure of the martyr and the shared set of images and beliefs surrounding him contributed to the survival of royalism and Anglicanism during the years of exile.With the Restoration the cult was given official status by the annexing of the Office for the 30th January in the Book of Common Prayer in 1662. The political theology underpinning the cult and a particular historiography of the Civil Wars were presented as the only orthodox reading of these events. Yet from the Exclusion Crisis onwards dissonant voices were heard challenging the orthodox interpretation. In these circumstances the cult began to fragment between those who retained the political theology of the 1650s and those who sought to adapt the cult to the changing political and dynastic circumstances of 1688 and 1714.This is the first study to deal exclusively with the cult and takes the story up until 1859, the year in which the Office for the 30th January was removed from the Book of Common Prayer. Apart from discussing the origins of the cult in war, revolution and defeat it also reveals the extent to which political debate in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries was conducted in terms of the Civil Wars. It also goes some way to explaining the persistence of conservative assumptions and patterns of thought.
