Book Description
From the bestselling author of American Tragedy and Perfect Murder, Perfect Town comes an even more stunning portrayal of America's dark side. Into the Mirror is the shocking story of FBI Special Agent Robert P. Hanssen, the master spy who singlehandedly created the greatest breach of security in the history of our country.Written in compelling, novelistic prose, Schiller re-creates a gripping portrait of Hanssen, who for twenty-two years was a loving husband, a devoted father of six, a deeply devout Catholic and member of Opus Dei, a passionate anticommunist, a dedicated FBI agent -- and a traitor the likes of which the United States has never before seen.On February 18, 2001, the FBI finally arrested Hanssen and charged him with selling to the Russians -- over a period of more than twenty years -- top-secret, classified information. Nothing that has been reported to date about this ordinary-looking but tormented man has revealed the astonishing facts that Lawrence Schiller and Norman Mailer -- collaborators on the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Executioner's Song and Oswald's Tale -- uncovered during their nine-month investigation into the life of this complex man. In seeking to solve this almost impenetrable mystery, Schiller and Mailer spent hundreds of hours interviewing members of Hanssen's family as well as his closest friends, colleagues, and fellow church members. They traveled to Moscow to interview a key member of the KGB who had handled the spy they knew only as "Ramon Garcia."Into the Mirror gets inside the mind of a devious and dangerously brilliant man and creates an unforgettable portrait of someone so caught up in the struggle with his own personal demons that he would betray everything he holds sacred-his wife, his family, his religion, and his country.

A novelisation for mass consumption.......2007-05-20
This is simply not a serious piece of work. It tries to be non-fiction while writing it within the style of fiction.
It reminded me of those books that come out with a film saying "Based on the screenplay of the film."
The Bureau and the Mole by David Vise was far better and revealed the same information.
Excellent choice of overall theme.......2007-03-27
Every page of this book is surprising and thought provoking. You gotta' read it. Lawrence Schiller's outstanding and concise writing is greatly aided by his research collaboration with Norman Mailer. They found a theme despite the fact that the deepest motivations of Robert P. Hanssen's behavior while turning himself into the spy who created the greatest breach of security in U.S. history--remain buried within himself. Critics of the movie of this book, cry out for a better peek into Hanssen's psyche, but it is unattainable. The book's theme had to be what it is, describe the observable conflict between Hanssen's psychosexual, religious, and political views, match them to chronological events, then put it all in such a way as to invite readers to pick up from there. I guessed that the doors to the Opus Dei group, to which Hanssen and his family were devoted, were barred to Schiller and Mailer. The most that could be written about it was written. (Opus Dei is also a subject of "Godfather III"). Schiller captures Hanssen's Moscow handlers, themselves conflicted between operating procedure and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The book left me thinking and imagining what Hanssen still keeps a secret, or maybe doesn't understand himself.
Good story. Shame it was written so badly.......2006-07-18
The newspaper and television reports of Robert Hanssen -- the FBI agent who spied for the Soviets in a frightening breach of national security -- were fascinating. But this book by Lawrence Schiller is silly.
Schiller has borrowed heavily from Norman Mailer's screenplay. And this is what spoils it. In a screenplay, you have to invent dialogue for the characters, and you can get away with invented dialogue if people know it is based on a true story. But in a book that is supposed to be factual, such as this one, invented dialogue becomes a barrier to credibility if it is used frequently in private situations.
In The Author's Note at the front of the book, readers are told that neither Hanssen nor his wife could be interviewed for the book because of a plea-bargain agreement they made with the Justice Department. So how the blazes can the author give Hanssen's conversations with himself in his bathroom, private conversations with his wife, and even how Hanssen's dog behaved when Hanssen took it for a walk?
Every few pages of this book talk about things that happened in private -- in Hanssen's office, at his home, in the park. Hanssen is quoted in all these places, even though the author wasn't there, and neither was anyone else who was interviewed for the book. I found this distracting and very unbelievable. Even worse was the author's obsession with sex -- even making up details of what Hanssen allegedly thought and did when no one but Hanssen could possibly know these things.
I rated this book as two stars because I didn't find any spelling mistakes or typographical errors. But as for the believability of the dialogue and private incidents, it doesn't even rate one star.
I really know what to make of this book........2006-03-01
Certainly Robert P. Hanssen was a difficult man to understand but the main problem that I have with this book it is impossible to determine whether you are reading real facts or fiction.
After reading the book, I am not sure whether it was the excitement or the money that was the major cause.
Anyway I was hoping for a study of what Robert P. Hanssen gave away. The effect on security etc. There is little of this.
Pure Fiction.......2005-11-20
Where did the author get the dialogue? - seems to have a fixation on masturbation - was he peeping on Hanssen and watching him masturbate all over the place? Awful! This thing goes into my "unfinished books" stack.

Book Description
Bertrand Russell was one of the greatest philosophers of our time. In addition, he engaged in a lifelong battle with the forces of injustice — emphasizing the importance of practice as well as theory. His most effective weapon in this struggle was letters to newspapers and magazines, most of which are collected in this volume. Russell exposes the irrationality of leaders and defends the public against the evils of the time, from British conscription in World War I and fascism in the 1930s to McCarthyism in the 1950s and the Vietnam War in the 1960s. These 400 witty, acerbic letters show him brilliantly sparring with both ordinary citizens and the most powerful leaders of the day, touching on everything from war and peace to sexual ethics and religion.

you've lost the weight - NOW WHAT ?!?!?!.......2007-09-09
I lost 80 pounds and realized: I know how to lose it. I know how to gain it for sure. How in the world will I maintain this loss? I'm 52 years old and can't imagine ever again devoting an entire year of discipline to losing so much weight. I refuse to get all casual about this perfect body/health achievement now. But how will I think about what and how I eat for the rest of my life without obsession and drama? Et voila, I found this wonderful book on Amazon. Do not be fooled by its simplicity. It is dense with wisdom. I now live without obsession or hysteria about my weight. Do the exercises for as long as it takes to make the Secrets second nature and you too will write a thank you to these wonderful authors.
80 pounds lost!.......2007-08-17
I was recommended this book in preparation for my gastric bypass surgery... I found it to be a very quick read, but everything it said made sense. Rethink the way you eat...
This book helped me to loose over 80 pounds in preparation for my surgery...just by helping me rethink the entire concept of eating...
Some very good advice over-hyped .......2006-09-10
This book has some very good advice about eating, but as usual the case with this kind of self- help book it is a bit over-hyped. It seems to me too that it downplays the truth that many slim people are slim simply because they have the genetic make- up for this.
In any case there is some excellent advice here. One such piece of advice is to avoid ' unconscious eating' i.e. Stuffing it in without paying any attention to it, or without enjoying it. Another good piece of advice , although a harder one to follow is to stop eating when one is 'satisfied' rather than when one is 'full'. Isn't 'full' what 'satisfied' really means sometimes? Another piece of advice is to listen to your body and know what it wants to eat. Still another is the one which tells you not to deny yourself a certain kind of food, because the 'temptation' will stay with you. 'Giving in to temptation is the best way to resist it" they say. And this is right . But 'giving in to temptation can also sometimes increase it more' One delight leading to another until one has eaten one's way through four refrigerators full of cake. My own sense is that if a person wants to lose weight they should place a limit on certain kinds of very fattening food, such as cake. It doesn't hurt I think to sometimes not give in to temptation. I think however that essentially the authors are right when they tell us we should consider ourselves able to eat any and every food. But I would add that the wisdom is simply in not over- doing it.
All in all I think that this is a good helpful book which most people will be able to get some tips from.
Will it solve the problem?
No more than any diet -book will.
Too much good food is available too easily- not slim people are multiplying not simply in the U.S. but throughout the world.
I would recommend that most of all try to be as healthy as we can and not let our overweight become too great, or get us down too much. ( Like all Advice of course. Easier said than done.)
This is what I was looking for...........2006-08-07
This is what I was looking for. Not another diet book, I have them all, and ALL have fallen short. This one is different. Diet books are like pain killers: They don't help you solve the problem, they just help you to mask them.....for a while!! This book goes to the root of the problem whether it hurts you or not, and makes you look at it, see what is causing it, and find ways to FIX IT, for good!
Relearn Your Relationship With Food.......2006-06-19
A very good book on establishing a healthy relationship with food. Although the book is geared toward women, it can still be valuable to men willing to acknowledge their issues with food.
The principles are practical, each aspect being introduced over the course of the book. Becoming aware of food and how it makes you feel is a great component. I also LOVED the books tone that food is a source of pleasure, something to be savored, something to be enjoyed.
The book does well to point out that a large part of people's eating dysfunctions are because they don't actually savor their food - not making it a conscious pleasure. This book will teach you life skills, not how to lose weight in 30 days. But, follow the principles, and enjoy EVERY food you eat, and you will lose weight once you get your metabolism off the feast and famine roller coaster.

Customer Reviews:
Just a Beginner.......2006-08-20
I am just a beginner with polymer clay and this book gave me some excellent information. It was easy to read and understand and not only did it give me good basic information, but it also gave me an idea of just how far you can go with polymer clay creatively.
Inspiring Creativity.......2003-04-25
Sarajane Helm's book was a wonderful jump start to my amateur polymer clay artistic creations. Not only is it well written with easy to follow examples, but the pictures are aesthetically pleasing. I hate books where the examples shown are simply not visually appealing enough for me to try. This is not the case with this book. Kudos to the photographer Bobby Grieser.
Each example is created in a way that inspires the reader to use the techniques and to change them to fit the reader's needs. Sarajane really inspires creativity with this book. Also, I found there are some fairly new techniques and methods to try that I have not seen in other polymer clay books.
Simply put, Creating a Polymer Clay Impression is a book that is inspiring for beginners and advanced artists alike. It is well thought out with visually inspiring examples and techniques. It also offers original ideas that I have not seen elsewhere. I recommend this book to anyone.
Create a Polyclay Impression - a year later........2002-10-01
I'm pretty sure I own every polymer clay book published save those dealing with sculpture, miniatures and doll making. I have read them cover to cover. For years, there were only a scant handful of books dealing with polymer clay, but the last couple of years has seen a near "boom" in new polymer clay books. I have preorder-ed all of them and eagerly awaited their publications.
I intended to write a review of Sarajane Helm's book, "Create a Polymer Clay Impression" when it was initially released and for various reasons didn't get it done. Since then, 6 or 7 new polymer clay books have been released and it seemed like a review in light of all of them would be timely.
I liked SaraJane Helm's book on first reading. It does not follow what has become sort of the formulaic approach of polymer clay books by beginning with a general discussion of polymer clay tools and techniques and following with step-by-step projects. It does indeed have very nice projects with instructions to complete them as well as the standard general information about working with polymer clay. What sets this book apart is that the text is loaded with specific information about materials and techniques polymer clay artists have experimented with, tried and tested since the late 80's or early 90's and have proven good.
The exploration of texturing clay and the use of rubber stamps with clay is especially worth mention - it virtually kicks open doors of creativity to a dimension of polymer clay that other books give scant mention. It switched on a little light bulb in my brain - aha! I can combine texture and other techniues and it doesn't have to be either - or.
There are three or four books in my "polymer clay library" that I find I go back to over and over for both specific information and creative inspiration and "Create a Polymer Clay Impression" is one of those well used books. I endorse it whole-heartedly.
A New Spin (For Me) On a Familiar Medium.......2002-01-31
Isn't it exciting when a new idea comes along, when something different pops up?
Texture is an incredible aspect of art because it can be manipulated in so many different ways. It can add all the detail you need to an entire form or add interest to a single component or a piece.
I never really explored texture until I picked up this book. Sarajane Helm shows how any object can be incorporated into a work via an impression. The reader will learn how to create and use molds, different ways to use stamps, and see how texture can make for some truly unique pieces of art.
Other subjects covered are: your clay basics, caning, and using your textured pieces in various applications such as covering boxes and switchplates, assembling jewelry and mosaics (including polymer tile-covered musical instruments).
This is a great book for anyone interested in polymer clay and is looking for truly unique inspiration.
Best Polymer Clay Book So Far!.......2002-01-28
I have many books on the subject and, although they all have added to my knowledge on the subject, this one goes far beyond! Not only did I learn many new things, but I never get tired of looking at the beautiful pictures of the magnificent work she and her husband have created!

Words can hurt. Any child who's been teased can tell you that. It takes an adult, though, to teach children how to defend themselves against those painful taunts. In Sticks and Stones, Scott Cooper, parent and former teacher and coach, wants to offer a "tool kit" of methods and exercises that are supposed to offer children ways to express themselves assertively, respond to blame and teasing, resolve conflicts, and talk confidently in social conversations--all while enhancing their communication skills and self-awareness. These are worthy and ambitious goals that Cooper complicates by mixing all sorts of metaphors into his method. Not only are these exercises supposed to form a tool kit, they are also supposed to correspond to "verbal judo" moves, which in turn are classified into different "ways" that correspond to different birds (Cooper happens to be an avid birdwatcher). The Way of the Blue Jay, for example, offers tools and verbal moves for "assertive self-expression," while the Way of the Crow teaches tricks that help children respond to blame. Get past the idiosyncratic labeling, however, and Cooper's exercises are sensible, practical, and self-explanatory. Want to teach your children how to accept criticism? Teach them how to say, "That's a good idea. I'll try better next time." --Sumi Hahn
Book Description
Sticks and Stones helps parents teach kids how to speak up for themselves more assertively, gently, and effectively. Each chapter, based on the characteristics of a particular bird, uses a wealth of examples and imaginative exercises to give kids the confidence to speak truth to power.
This unique guide, beautifully illustrated with line drawings of each bird and informed by the author's gentle humor, will help kids be effective communicators and includes easy-to-follow exercises and sample scripts. Examples include:
Shut down bullies (The Way of the Blue Jay)
Overcome shyness (The Way of the Black Bird)
Counter peer pressure (The Way of the Hummingbird)
Resolve fights (The Way of the Dove)
Accept blame (The Way of the Crow)
And more

Very Practical Information, True to Life.......2004-07-22
I have read quite a few books on assertiveness training in order to help my 7 year old deal with teasing from her peers. I must have read about 15 different books, but this book truly stands out. It's not just a bunch of hogwash about how teasing affects self esteem, etc, etc. It's real life, practical techniques easy enough to teach a 7 year old that will give her the tools she needs in dealing with the stuff 7 year olds all have to deal with. Each chapter in the book deals with a different concept to work on. So I'm teaching my daughter a chapter a week so that when she re-enters school in September, she'll be much better prepared.
Kids Need this Book!.......2002-07-17
This book is great. Kids need it! It gave my kids the actual lines they can say when they are being teased. One of the nice surprises is that it also gave me ways to help my kids deal with the whiny, exaggerated things they tell themselves. My kids use the phrases in the book and now they know what to say automatically. This has given them a lot of confidence. They feel much better in many different situations.
Another Approach.......2000-04-14
Let me say first that I have not read this particular book, but have a comment to make regarding destructive teasing.
My 11 year old was teased unmercifully last year by a group of kids after he stood up for a younger child that was the "class goat". (This book was not available; I would have used it if it had been). Suffice it to say that visits to the principal, the teachers, etc. yielded sympathy but no protection.
We finally got him a couple of books of insults and he practiced them at home. He got to be really good at the funny comeback, the creative snap.
It wasn't our favorite solution, but it did work. He's even popular this year because kids think it's funny. The teasing has lessened, though no one at this age is totally immune. At least he didn't slug anybody and he's getting some relief from the incessant comments.
So if the "turn the other cheek" approach isn't working, buy a few insult books and see if you can make the best defense a good offense.
Cooper Coaches Parents, Teachers, and the Rest of Us.......2000-04-11
Scott Cooper's book, STICKS AND STONES, is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to improve interpersonal relations at home, in the classroom among children or even in a marriage or between countries. This small, completely accessible and easy-to-read book is organized into chapters that illustrate skills by linking them to the patterns of common birds. for example, for problems dealing with blaming (The Way of the Crow) skills such as the "Mighty Might" can be learned and utilized on the spot. Scripts enlarge the concepts and are written in kid-friendly language.
Although this book abounds with good psychological principles, the author comes across as a positive coach with a humorous and compassionate style. The material and strategies are easy to grasp and draw upon solid psychological research, but are not heavy with jargon. Scott Cooper's wisdom will help fill in gaps in your own experience as a child.
Every teacher and principal should have a copy near by. I have recommended this book to many adults in my social work practice. I wish it was around when I was raising a family.
Great for All Relationships.......2000-04-07
I don't have children of my own, but I bought this book because I thought it would be helpful knowledge to have when dealing with my nieces and nephews. I was surprised to find that these skills aren't just for kids. These are basic human relationship skills that will work for anyone. I wish more adults understood and applied this type of healthy interaction. Perhaps this book will lay the groundwork for a more kind and self-assured generation to come. I recommend this book for everyone. It's not just for children.

Book Description
Architect, teacher, journalist, town planner and cultural entrepreneur, Sir Charles Reilly (1874–1948) was a leading figure of the early twentieth-century British architectural scene. Marketing Modernisms is the first book to take an in-depth look at Reilly’s career, tracing his evolving architectural ethos via a series of case studies of his built work. Among other issues, the author considers Reilly’s involvement in cultural enterprises such as the establishment of the Liverpool Repertory Theatre, his journalism, transatlantic links and town-planning theories. Reilly has been largely overlooked by writers of Modernist histories, but this book restores him to deserved prominence.
Book Description
Every sixth human being in the world today is an Indian, and every sixth Indian is an untouchable. For thousands of years the untouchables, or Dalits, the people at the bottom of the Hindu caste system, have been treated as subhuman. Their story has rarely been told. This remarkable book achieves something altogether unprecedented: it gives voice to India's voiceless.
In Untouchables, Narendra Jadhav tells the awe-inspiring story of his family's struggle for equality and justice in India. While most Dalits had accepted their lowly position as fate, Jadhav's father rebelled against the oppressive caste system and fought against all odds to forge for his children a destiny that was never ordained.
Based on his father's diaries and family stories, Jadhav has written the triumphant story of his parents -- their great love, unwavering courage, and eventual victory in the struggle to free themselves and their children from the caste system. Jadhav vividly brings his parents' world to light and unflinchingly documents the life of untouchables -- the hunger, the cruel humiliations, the perpetual fear and brutal abuse.
Compelling and deeply compassionate, Untouchables is a son's tribute to his parents, an illuminating chronicle of one of the most important moments in Indian history, and an eye-opening work of nonfiction that gives readers access and insight into the lives of India's 165 million Dalits, whose struggle for equality continues even today.

Good story of about a family challenging the system.......2006-08-24
This is a good night time read. The author tells the story about his family confronting the caste system in India. It is not a historical account, but the author lets us know how, thru the years, the "upper" classes in India have treated the "dalits" .The author's father deserves all the credit in the world because he was the one who initiated this challenge against the caste system. The dalits still have a long way to go but looks like their situation is improving. The author's account is simple and to the point, altough i think that, at times, the author strays a little too much of the subject giving us a lot of information that is not that relevant to the story. But all in all is a good book that helps us understand and appreciate how people in other parts of the world struggle while we have it easy here in the United States.
An unusual inside-out view of the struggles and achievments of an Indian family.......2006-01-21
Written in a rather spare style this book is not Arundhati Roy, but does provide a honest view of a Mahar family in the villages of Maharashtra and the slums of its capital Mumbai. In terms of the Indian caste ladder, Mahars are at the lowest rung and were (and in some mental pockets still are) considered 'untouchables'. The correct term for this lowest rung is "Dalit", and Dalits are found in almost all the regions of India, speaking each region's local language, at about 15-20% of the population. But the Mahars have been a little more fortunate than other regional Dalit communities, in their recent history. During the British Raj they were designated as a martial caste, and military regiments were organized from amongst them. Also B.R. Ambedkar, a lesser known visionary from early 20th century India, the 'architect' of free India's constitution, and a Mahar himself, was an inspiring force in showing the way for socio-economic progress.
I have some reservations about the English title of the book, and the original Marathi title, "My father and mother" just resonates a little more.
An interesting, insightful story.......2006-01-03
This is an interesting book and I learned alot from it, never realizing the caste system of India played such a horrifying role at one point in time. The endurance of the author's family is commendable, and it is a story worth reading. Very interesting and insightful observations coming from a family who has struggled to be treated well - sometimes just to be treated better than a dog, literally. Well done.
Great insight into Indias still prevalent caste system.......2005-11-24
This book tells the story of the authors parents and their lives as lower caste members of Indias social system. It is a great reminder of how tough the road for some people was/is because of the name their family carries. In India to this day a persons last name can attach to him or her heavy social baggage. Baggage that comes with social behavior not fit for animals. Mr. Jadhav writes about how his dad was determined to free his children from the bonds of caste by educating them. This book should be read by all young people of Indian origin. It is an important part of Indian history. Very akin to what the African American population faced during the years of segregation. This is a book worth owning.
