A Vision of the Sacred: My Personal Journey with Krishnamurti is a contemporary and intimate memoir by Krishamurti's private secretart and friend in India, Sunanda Patwardhan.
Customer Reviews:
The Sacred Search........2000-06-10
One gets the impression from reading this Wonderfull book that Sunanda was a warm hearted, sincere and intelligent seeker of spiritual truth.
Since her first meeting with Krishnamurti in 1947 to her death in 1999 she did a lot of work for Krishnamurti and the Krishnamurti foundation in India. This book is a collection af meditation on the Spiritual Search and the influence of Krishnamurti and his Teaching on her. She says that she often got a sense of the Sacred around Krishnamurti and in situations like that it's so easy fo fall into the Guru trap and to stop thinking for oneself and just relying on the words and influence of others, But as Krishnamurti said to her " I can tell you that there is a lovely garden beyond the hill. I can hold your hand, But You have to walk and climb the hill."(p-11).
This book is inspiring and gives one a lot to think on, and her writing is Poetic and Clear.
Also recomended are the Krishnamurti Biograpy's by Pupul Jayakar and Mary Lutyens and some of Krishnamurti's books like his Notebook and Freedom from the Known.
A Wonderful New Book on Krishnamurti.......1999-12-29
A VISION OF THE SACRED: My Personal Journey with Krishnamurti By Sunanda Patwardhan Ph.D.
Reviewed by Satish Telgar Ph.D.
J.Krishnamurti the peripatetic teacher who ever since his apostasy from the Theosophical Society in the 1930's traveled around the world and talked to thousands of people touched and transformed many lives. Mrs. Sunanda Patwardhan the author of this wonderful little book A Vision of the Sacred had the rare privilege of being his close friend and confidant, records in it in a frank and candid manner the number of conversations and anecdotes that she was privy to. As she says in the introduction to the book the reason to write it was an earnest wish to share with the reader the events, insights and conversations with Krishnamurti and how it helped her face her own conflicts and begin her inward pilgrimage. The book has yet another lofty purpose, which is to communicate the sense of the sacred she witnessed in the remarkable presence of Krishnamurti. She hopes as she says in the introduction that a reader in the next century, which is upon us now, should be able to get a glimpse of this sense of the sacred that radiated from Krishnamurti by reading the book.
Those of us who tend to think of metaphysical and religious truths as `distant' and `inaccessible' without undergoing rigorous practices of meditation will be surprised to discover that much of it has to do with observation of one's daily life with its attendant conflicts and problems. Time and again the reader is offered with anecdotes and suggestions which point out the need to be aware of what is happening to oneself as the key to unlock the unknown.
Mrs. Patwardhan refers to an incident where Krishnamurti admonishes her and refers to her vanity and the need to be aware of it. Through careful observation one can see the self as it is instead of resorting to speculation. Speculative thinking brings into play in its wake the deeply encrusted thought process and distorts our perception. Intellect is the main instrument of speculative thought. Krishnamurti urges us to transcend the intellect as he is quoted saying, " You have sharpened your intellect. It is capable of analysis, clear thinking. That's enough. Now turn to other direction, the unexplained part, an explosion of silence in the mind". Silence and solitude are an essential part of Krishnamurti's teaching. One is reminded here of what the Buddha said that despite the fact that he had taught for nearly forty years yet he was in silence.
Every now and then as one reads the book one gets a glimpse of Krishnamurti's probing mind. In one such revealing conversation, in response to a query from Krishnamurti, Mrs. Patwardhan refers to how in her own life through perception she was able to negate formation of things in her mind and accomplish this in a successive manner with other perceptions as well and thereby gaining insight into the ending of time. Krishnamurti points out that by going from one act of perception-negation to another it becomes a process and so it is still in the realm of time. He goes on to add through an exhortation, "....... Stop saying, ` I know, then the process ends'". To someone like me, who teaches philosophy, that statement resonates and reverberates with an ever-deeper meaning. In the Apology of Plato one of the great texts of philosophy in the western tradition, Socrates says that all he knows is that he does not know. Plato's dialogues may be seen as an attempt to understand this great utterance of Socrates.
There are many interesting anecdotes and passages in the book, which will hold the attention of the thoughtful reader. One such passage is Mrs. Patwardhan talking about her many miscarriages and her failure to attain motherhood. This leaves a great sense of void. Talking about it to Krishnamurti she says that she has accepted her inevitable fate of not being a mother and in a sense made peace with herself. Krishnamurti's response to this is very revealing. He raises many interesting questions all calculated to expose the deep lingering desire to have a child and the consequent frustration of not having one. He asks if she has observed very clearly her inner reactions when she sees photographs of lovely children, sees a mother being tender to her baby etc,. The moral of this story is clear; it is not a matter of acceptance or rejection but deep and careful observation. It is only through deep and careful observation that the hidden and buried content of our consciousness can be eviscerated to clear view.
The book is divided into convenient sections covering a wide array of topics ranging from Mrs. Patwardhan's first impressions of Krishnamurti and her own brahminical background to the subject of social change, tradition, education, living and dying, inner revolution, and theosophy. The language of the book is simple, direct, clear and straight from the heart. Some of us who are fortunate enough to have known Mrs. Patwardhan personally will immediately sense the gentleness and openness that was so characteristic of her personality as we read the book. The fact that Mrs. Patwardhan was a fine stenographer as well and kept scrupulous notes makes the quotations from Krishnamurti all the more authentic. The book is a great contribution not only to those who are discovering the teachings of Krishnamurti anew, but to others as well who have been familiar and who cannot afford to lose the ever renewing challenge of the vastness and depth of a great body of teachings that Krishnamurti has left behind for posterity.

How couples can restore trust and repair love relationships
Even the strongest relationship can be eroded by common, everyday breaches of trust. A small lie about a purchase, a cover-up for a forgotten birthday--each takes a bite out of trust. Over time, intimate confidences are weakened and the foundation of trust begins to crumble. It is Dr. Block's firm belief that when couples feel emotionally safe with each other, their relationship is more passionate, open, uninhibited, and sexually alive.
Filled with inspiring case studies from Dr. Block's private practice, this book offers couples an innovative, solution-oriented approach to restoring trust and repairing love relationships shattered or eroded by betrayal.
Includes chapters covering:
- Recognizing the Signs of Trust . . . and Mistrust
- Dance Away Lovers: The Trust-Mistrust Relationship
- Jealousy, Lover's Hell
- The Frontier of Trust: Sexual Fidelity
- Restoring Trust
"Through a spirited, imaginative exploration of love relationships, Block develops a useful roadmap for those who want their relationship to be meaningful." --Daniel Acaoz, founder, American Journal of Family Therapy

Incredible book!.......2007-10-01
I think this book has some fabulous points on anyone who has any trust issues, it's very direct and makes so much sense. I wish I had read this book a long time ago, I'd say it really gives an in depth description as to why so many of us don't trust and sabotage a potential good relationship.
The Best!!.......2006-08-07
This is the most important book I have ever read. My partner and I finally understand WHy we made the mistakes. Only then could we fix them and not repeat them. If you read nothing else ever, read this book. Your life will make complete sense
Useless and full of psycho-babble garbage.......2005-06-24
It's not just that this book is written horribly (it's nothing but extreme excerpts from people who've obviously made therapy their personal hobby). It's not just that this book fails to offer actual constructive ideas about dealing with trust issues (although it does explain, ad nauseum, all the ways you might see trust issues). The real problem is that it sounds like the most old-school, formulaic psycho-babble you could possible imagine.
In a nutshell, here's what this book will tell you: 1. it's all because of your parents and 2. it's all because of your gender. Helpful? NO!
I really have no idea where all the good reviews on this book are coming from. Seriously, if I didn't have such extreme trust issues, I'd wonder if the author didn't pay a couple of his friends to drop Amazon a note...
A Book that Invites Compassions to Trusting Relationships.......2005-03-24
The reason I picked up this book in Amazon is I started a relationship with someone I could not trust. Unlike the pop entertaining self-help books you find nowadays in the bookstores, this book has a very compassionate writing style to help one learning how and why they could not find trust in their relationships. This book covers various topics about why trust is being breached:
1. Everyday behaviors that small promises are broken (never call when they say they will call, canceling a birthday dinner, etc)
2. Jealousy games (flirting with others, commenting your attractions to others/others' attractions towards you, etc)
3. Childhood and Family Experience
4. Some of the roots of the infidelity/affairs that lead to the break of trust
5. The lack of communication (especially communicating their most inner thoughts/feelings)
This book also talks about realistic expectations of seeking couple/marriage counseling as well as many helpful tools/techniques to build/re-build a trusting relationship with your partner (it gets worse before it gets better). Dr. Block states that trust is being breached when reliability and consistency of one's behavior is not developed. When couples were hurt by each other's past behavior, the most important thing for one to do is to heal the pain and Dr. Block provides specific steps in how to do so (e.g. sticking with the issues than trying to open the old wounds, express how you feel rather than becoming defensive, etc).
In my opinion, people sometimes have reasons to be distrustful. When your partner has demonstrated ambivalent behavior consistently and when there has been numerous warning signs (such as the partner saves the love letters from their secret lovers, comes home very late every day, etc), one has a right to become distrustful. When one feels the other has been playing numerous manipulation/jealousy games just to get what he/she wants (where it could be money, sex, power, control, status, etc), one just has the right not to continue to trust. One has a right to question when their partner has been consistently running games. If one has vowed to commit to another, seeing one person exclusively, their behavior/actions need to be consistent with the vows. Only when the both of the partners are willing to work towards staying together and loving each other in mending/creating/re-building trust relationship, broken promises ultimately lead to emotional withdrawal and parting at the end.
I used to hear people say, "I immediately/automatically trust someone I just met unless he/she has demonstrated a specific/concrete evidence not to trust." I used to question what was wrong with me about not able to trust others in the first meeting. I finally come to conclude that I disagree with the statement where one should be able to trust another in the first glance. Of course, it is not right to paint a pre-judgment/inaccurate picture on someone with little/no evidence (which could be wrong perceptions). One always has the right to withhold trust till a point you feel they are reliable and predictable in many aspects. Trust is different from being in control. Trust is when you are comfortable your partner's behavior would not hurt your feelings. You do not need to control in order to feel the love from your partner. Trust also takes time to build, sometimes years to build. It needs to be earned and your partner needs to be able to go through the peaks and valleys with you (and vice versa). When we become naïve to trust in first glance, we subject ourselves to be vulnerable where our heart/bank account will be hurt by people who are manipulators (of course manipulators would not admit they're running games). Trust can also be broken by only just one act (e.g. having an affair). One's actions/behavior, not one's words demonstrate whether he/she is trustworthy. The actions/behaviors need to be consistent throughout the course of time. This is how one can build the credibility for others to trust. Of course actions/behaviors need to be accompanied with open expression of feelings/emotions.
Last, but not the least, one needs to realize when trust is breached, it is time to take very good care of yourself and to heal the pain. You are not responsible for your partner's misbehavior. However, it is important not to act out of anger and vengeful thoughts (such as saying demeaning words, payback, etc). Feel the pain, the hurt, the anger and the rage as it comes. Write down all your thoughts even if it requires you to write the curse words down. Talk to your therapist if you have one. Turn yourself to your support group (family, friends where you know they love you and treat you well). Sometimes, men and women's group will also work well in validating your pain and hurt. It is ok to cry and it is ok to seek help. The most important thing is to heal after the broken promises. If your partner demonstrates remorse, he/she will turn to you consistently and seek for your understanding/empathy. He/she will work on his/her issues very hard to demonstrate they are willing to change for the sake of the better. They would admit/accept their misbehavior than justifying. Most important of all, every one of us in this world is entitled to happiness. We are responsible for our own lives, not our partners' lives.
BRILLIANT WORK!.......2003-06-28
BROKEN PROMISES, MENDED HEARTS, provides answers to many questions concerning trust issues in love relationships. Dr. Block remains consistent in his ability to write with the reader in mind, and his compassionate approach to writing makes this book particularly helpful with such a delicate subject as dealing with one's "heart". He covers many topics such as: everyday events that break down trust, playing jealousy games, to the struggle with vulnerability. Through the use of questionnaires, Dr. Block encourages the reader to take an active approach to learning about their own relationship struggles. He ultimately helps the reader understand the mechanics behind their issues with a sensitive yet direct technique. GRAND APPLAUSE FOR DR. BLOCK!

Back to basics.......2007-01-04
I hate this book. It makes me so terribly jealous of Hugh's country lifestyle. Filled with good, basic recipes and tons of information on growing foods and basic animal husbandry for anyone from city-dweller to rural smallholder, it is an upscale, up-to-date book in the vein of the old Carla Emery title "Encyclopedia of Country Living".
For city dwellers, in addition to Hugh's simple recipes, he offers plenty of good advice on how to choose the best of what is available at your grocer or supermarket. Plus, it's a healthy reminder of where food comes from.
It's a thick book. Real value for money! In these days of fast food and fast paced lifestyles, it pays to slow down and read and think and eat.
Now, I'm off to try his recipe for pumpkin risotto...
Why I Like THE RIVER COTTAGE COOKBOOK.......2003-10-07
Hugh manages to capture the natural enthusiasm he exudes for the subjects of food and self sustained living in his television show, in this book.
Nice pictures, a must have in any cookery book these days, are in abundance.
The book gives a good introduction to the worlds of animal husbandry and horticulture, which is exactly what he sets out to do, he doesn't get bogged down with detail and yet doesn't skip over things either.
The writing style is easy and informal, much like the tv show itself.
A must have for anyone who liked the show.
The River Cottage Cookbook.......2003-08-06
Good, honest easy cooking with a twist. Frank and funny with regard to making the most of the bounty of the countryside from nettle soup to bunny burgers. Perfect reference for making jams ans preserves to growing your own produce.

Book Description
A longtime woodworker's illustrated guide to the tools of the trade and how to use them. For those who would like to have the benefit of a woodworker's extensive experience with hand tools, this is the book to own. Crammed with practical information, it is the next best thing to looking over a craftsman's shoulder as he works with his tools, asking questions and getting straight answers in plain language, seeing how each tool is held and manipulated to get the best work out of it. From bit brace, chisel, and mallet to saws, specialized planes, drawknife, and spokeshave, Aldren Watson describes in detail the actions of the tools basic to good woodworking. All the procedures are explicitly illustrated with handsome line drawings, and an appendix gives plans and dimensions for making a workbench and other necessary pieces of shop equipment. With 450 b/w illustrations by the author.
Customer Reviews:
User's Manual for Woodworking Hand Tools.......2007-09-11
Watson has written a clear and concise user's manual for woodworking hand tools. He includes many of the basic hand tools that are overlooked (such as the brace and drawknife) in other hand tool books. I got more information out of Watson's clear drawings than I did from the beautiful photographs in Garrett Hack's "Classic Hand Tools" book. This book is meant to be kept in your workshop instead of on the coffeetable.
I Love This Book!.......2007-08-20
I don't gush over books very often but this is one of the best investments I have ever made. The illustrations are startling and the writing is clear and unadorned.
What Watson does very well is assume nothing with regard to his reader. He neither panders to the "old pro" nor is condescending to the "rank amateur." He just talks about how to use hand tools, how to think about hand tools and how to appreciate hand tools. I don't think there is a person doing wood working today who would not find something in here that makes them say "Oh, yeah..., that's a good idea."
I have spent quite a lot of money on the Taunton woodworking library and I value them highly. They are good books. But this one is the first one I pick up when I am just spending a few minutes sitting down or before drifting off to sleep.
One caution - this book is about "hand tools" and does include chapters on tools like "hand augurs" which very few of us use, however I have to admit I am tempted to buy one just because of the obvious pleasure this guy has in them. One of my quirks I suppose.
Useful book.......2007-08-09
This book, required reading for boatbuilding students at the Landing School, is a terrific resource for anyone using handtools. It covers usage, care, and maintenance of hand tools. A valuable reference book that I will keep handy in my toolroom.
Elegant, useful book.......2007-05-24
As someone new to woodworking who wants to focus on hand tools, I found this book an excellent introduction to tools ranging from the obvious to the relatively obscure. When I picked it up, I didn't think I had much to learn about, for example, hammers and screwdrivers; I was wrong. Then came the tools that I knew little or nothing about, such as draw knives, spoke shaves, marking gauges and bits and braces. Watson provides explanations of the working principles behind each, pointers on their use and proper maintenance, and offers plans for home-built accessories to improve the utility of your workshop. He even provides his readers two workbench options that I wish I'd seen before I built one of my own. Watson's writing is straightforward and clear, his voice is experienced but never condescending, and his drawings not only provide guidance but also lend a warmth and sense of craft to the book that make it a pleasure to return to again and again. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in woodworking. It's a great place to start, and a reference you'll return to for tips, ideas, and reassurance.
Best in Its Class.......2007-03-16
It is a pity that Watson's book is not better known among woodworkers, as it is the most comprehensive guide to using hand tools that I have yet seen on the market. Watson devotes chapters to workbenches and vises, braces and bits, chisels (which he covers quite extensively), files and rasps, mallets, saws, sandpaper, squares, and planes (the most extensive chapter in the book). He also covers less common tools such as the drawknife, the marking gauge, scrapers, the inshave, and the spokeshave, as well as very common tools like wire brushes, levels, nail sets, and screwdrivers. Watson's descriptions of each tool's function are clear and concise. His book is not cluttered by text, though it does a thorough job of explaining not only common uses for hand tools, but also advanced techniques. For example, this is one of the only woodworking books I know that explains how to cut a chamfer with a hand plane, or how to use a rasp to cut a round tenon on square stock. Perhaps the book's only fault is that it does not discuss either wooden planes or Japanese tools at all. But the book's greatest strength is its illustrations, all drawn by the author. Photographs in many other woodworking books have too many shadows to be very useful, and often a crucial tool operation is hidden by the hand that is performing it. Watson's masterful drawings overcome this problem--they illustrate tool mechanics, user posture, and wood texture, all with a minimum of extraneous detail. This work is the best single-volume book on traditional woodworking tools and techniques currently available. It is also significantly longer--over 400 pages--than most other woodworking books. Watson is required reading for anyone interested in the topic, and his book is the standard by which all other woodworking books should be judged for years to come.

It may be difficult for those suffering from depression to add a little work into their day; simply getting out of bed can seem like plenty of work. But if you are newly diagnosed or experiencing moderate problems with depression or bipolar disorder, The Depression Workbook might be a literal lifesaver.
The first section is especially useful to new patients just learning to navigate the signs, treatments, and vocabulary of depression. Clearly written overviews of specific symptoms are coupled with space for you to write in your own thoughts on treatment, prognosis, and your ultimate goals. Checklists and daily planners help to identify both areas of difficulty and positive experiences; later in the book, you'll find charts for tracking medications, diet, and doctor visits.
A full section is devoted to the establishment and maintenance of a support group. Ideas range from open discussions with family members to seeking out volunteer work, and it's this section that may be the trickiest for the depressed to work through. Finding the strength to make new friends may seem impossible at first, but author Mary Ellen Copeland spreads plenty of warmth, encouragement, and personal experience among her directives. --Jill Lightner

Non bi-polars beware.......2007-06-10
This is a great book but I found that it was suited more for people with bi-polar issues or manic issues. In addition, if done alone at home, it can bring up some really difficult issues. I think this is great to use in a group setting or in a partial or full hospital program, but I found it to bring up too many emotions and prefer to use it in group settings only.
Somewhat helpful.......2006-08-23
I found that this book was heavily skewed to bipolar depression. While the information and exercises given are no doubt helpful to those with bipolar depression, I found that they did not really pertain to my unipolar (postpartum) depression. I would look for different resources if you are suffering from unipolar depression.
Great Help for Depression.......2006-08-14
Depression is a horrible illness that I would not have survived if it were not for books like this one. I researched and sought information endlessly when in the black hole of this horrible illness. This book provides resources and information that is necessary for anyone suffering from depression or those working with the suffering individuals. Always remember there is help and its not as bad as it seems. Depression is an illness that effects your entire being so treatment is necessary. You cant just shake it off. This book helps.
Definitely recommended for the depressed and those working with these individuals.
Practical Options for Managing Bipolar.......2006-04-29
Some of the reviewers have stated that the book made them more depressed because they were so depressed they couldn't follow the suggestions in the book. I will be the first to admit that you can be so depressed that you can't do much of anything including reading. This book does contain useful suggestions for times when you are not at the extremes of mania and depression when you can follow through on ideas in the book. It also addresses how to make some practical plans for what to do when these mood crises occur and how to moderate their disruptive effects on your life.
The book provides a wide range of different approaches for detecting your symptoms, maintaining stability, moderating the effects of mania, developing a support network, and methods for stress reduction. In many ways, the book can be used the way you'd use a cookbook. Go through the ideas presented and find the ones that appeal to you and try them.
Suggestions for a rewrite.......2005-12-25
This is an addendum to my review of two years ago.
First off, I mentioned that the book is written on a grade-school level. Why not produce another edition, with the title "The Depression Workbook for Smart People" or "The Depression Workbook for the College-Educated"? This may help some of us to feel less put off and alienated.
Additionally, the book is also written from a highly feminine point of view. The profession expresses concern that more men are not coming forward and seeking help for depression, but I believe many men are not comfortable with many of the suggestions put forward in this book (and many others). Men are not inclined to take up painting, or knitting, or flower arranging. We like skeet shooting, NASCAR, and cage fighting. In other words, expecting men to become more like women in order to get well is unreaslistic. Another suggested edition: "The Depression Workbook for Men."
