Book Description
In March of 1980, Le Nouvel Observateur published the final interviews between the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, then blind and debilitated, and his young assistant, Benny Lévy. Readers immediately denounced the interviews as distorted and fraudulent for portraying a Sartre who had abandoned his leftist convictions, rejected his most intimate friends, and cast aside his fundamental beliefs in favor of a messianic Judaism. Sartre's supporters argued that it was his orthodox interlocutor, Lévy, who had twisted the words of the ailing philosopher.
Yet, shortly before his death, Sartre confirmed the authenticity of the interviews and their puzzling content. Here presented in translation, the interviews are framed by two provocative essays by Benny Lévy, accompanied by a comprehensive introduction from noted Sartre authority Ronald Aronson, which places the interviews in biographical and philosophical perspective to demonstrate how they confirm and contribute to Sartre's overall philosophy. This absorbing volume at last contextualizes and elucidates the final thoughts of a brilliant and influential mind.

Alternative compendium of "the 60s".......2001-05-16
Sartre scholar Ronald Aronson errs immediately in his intro to Hope Now: The 1980 Interviews by writing that questions about these interviews can be "posed dispassionately" now, meaning, of course, that they can be posed objectively & thereby synopsizes all that has made American liberal education the grand failure that it is. Moreover, Sartre might have disapproved. What did he write about "committed literature?"
In the weeks before his death, Sartre and long-time personal secy Benny Levy recorded a series of discussions, in the form of interviews, some of which were published in a Paris weekly newspaper. Levy, a former Maoist student leader (for the contemporary American student, Maoist student leader is probably as archaic or unknown a term as internal combustion engine) & ardent student of Sartre, fairly attacked the blind & aging writer/philosopher, at times engaging him, at times bullying him.
Thruout the interviews (which take up, really, just one-fourth of the entire book [hence 3 stars]; the rest is all intro commentary & postscripts), Sartre seemed to hold his own, citing the errors of Marxism, existentialism, & the left-wing political movements of the 60s & early 70s. I think the interviews offer the reader a good feel for that period (fondly known in the USA as "the 60s"), when Levy was known as Pierre Victor, Sartre was backing all kinds of radical & left-wing endeavors, & the 1968 student rebellions thruout Europe but especially in Paris threatened to topple the whole knowledge-is-power façade.
In the end, the students failed, but the student uprisings in the USA, then & after, were a mere burlesque of those in Europe: certainly, the knowledge-is-power concept was never questioned (US students just wanted more power with their knowledge), & the smugness that allows Mr. Aronson to pose questions dispassionately has enveloped every succeeding academic iteration.
The famous quote from Sartre's one-act play, "No Exit," was "Hell is other people." Sartre was almost 75 when these interviews took place, and then he said, "It's other people that are my old age...Old age is a reality that is mine but that others feel..." The topics that disturbed so many after the interviews were published were Judaism and Jewishness.
Levy generalizes that Jews fear the revolutionary mob because it may become the pogrom mob; Sartre counters that "there were a considerable number of Jews in the Communist Party in 1917 [in Russia]." Personally, I am at a loss to explain why Levy was reviled by Sartre scholars: Sartre states that he was profoundly influenced by the "Jewish reality" that confronted him after the war, when he met Jews that he saw as having a destiny "beyond the ravages [of] anti-Semitism."
Hope Now seems to me to be more of a coda to the 1972 documentary, "Sartre: By Himself," where he chatted amiably with the editorial staff of Le Temps Moderne and Simone de Beauvoir. That film depicted a leisurely afternoon with friends. Sartre with Levy seems more like colleagues at work. Unlike the current crop of celebrity academics, Sartre always appeared, to appropriate Harry Stack Sullivan's comment about schizophrenics, "simply human."
Book Description
In Singular Intimacies, which the New England Journal of Medicine said captured the essence of becoming and being a doctor, Danielle Ofri led us into the hectic, constantly challenging world of big-city medicine. In Incidental Findings, she's finished her training and is learning through practice to become a more rounded healer. The book opens with a dramatic tale of the tables being turned on Dr. Ofri: She's had to shed the precious white coat and credentials she worked so hard to earn and enter her own hospital as a patient. She experiences the real slight prick and pressure of a long needle as well as the very real sense of invasion and panic that routinely visits her patients. These fifteen intertwined tales include Living Will, where Dr. Ofri treats a man who has lost the will to live, and she too comes dangerously close to concluding that he has nothing to live for; Common Ground, in which a patient's difficult decision to have an abortion highlights the vulnerabilities of doctor and patient alike; Acne, where she is confronted by a patient whose physical and emotional abuse she can't possibly heal, so she must settle on treating the one thing she can, the least of her patient's problems; and finally a stunning concluding chapter, Tools of the Trade, where Dr. Ofri's touch is the last in a woman's long life.

Excellent read.......2007-09-24
Dr. Ofri provides the reader with an engaging, well-articulated,easy to read book that helps us experience a little of what it is like to walk in the shoes of a physician. Her use of language is highly impressive.
another doctor book.......2006-08-10
self absorbed, self centered book, hopefully useful for young md's. myself, at end of career, found little of interest.
Wow!.......2005-12-29
I rarely review books on Amazon because my writing always seems so abysmal in comparison to the work I'm reviewing. However, I really want to tell everyone what a wonderful book this is. I was deeply touched and found myself crying over several essays, wondering how my husband (a physician) manages. Ofri is a very good writer, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only complaint was that it ended too soon, so I'm off to go buy "Singular Intimacies."
Elijah .......2005-10-27
Bought the book a month ago. I am very sensitive leaving comments and reviews about the books. This one, I recommend it. This book is for everyone in any field. It's just not about just a simple Doctor's story. I have read many Doctor's story but this is quite different. Just buy it and read it. You'll understand. Please email me if you have any question about the book. I'll be more than willing to help you. (For the buyers who had horrible experience purchasing books online as myself)
A vivid story of patients and changing relationships evolves.......2005-09-05
Orphi's postgraduate life involved taking temporary assignments at hospitals and clinics as she traveled the country to recover from her medical residency - during that process she learned much about patients and humanity. Incidental Findings: Lessons From My Patients In The Art Of Medicine shows how she becomes a better healer when she sheds her white coat and enters the hospital as a patient herself, when she travels to rural communities and small towns, and when she learns from her patients - even those she dislikes. A vivid story of patients and changing relationships evolves.

When I cook using this book, I create mouthwatering masterpieces! Living in Texas, it's common to serve Southwestern-style cuisine for a humble get together with friends. If you're having a fiesta, and you WANT your guests to visit again, you should use this cookbook. The food will please your guests' tummies and tastebuds! They'll think you're a superior chef.
Granted I've not tried ALL of the recipes, but I've made *several*-- enough to have confidence and faith in the rest of the book... enough to cast a vote of confidence for Jane Butel.
Jane's recipes are well written, and I've enjoyed the diversity of her recipes. Many different salsas and sauces, entrees, drinks, and desserts! My creations have tasted so very fresh and delicious. Jane Butel knows what she's talking about! So, check out this great cookbook and start delighting tastebuds in your town!
Delicious, Easy Southwestern Cuisine.......2002-11-04
I have never taken the time to review a book before, but this one definitely deserves the kudos. It is well-written and nicely displayed. The recipes are exactly as described. The vast majority use ingredients that are easy to find (even in my rural town) and the instructions are easy to follow. Everything I have made from this book turned out wonderfully and most require only an average amount of effort in the kitchen (nothing too complicated!!) The dishes were truly beautiful and delicious.

Fair to partly Cloudy??? Still GOOD BOOK!!.......2005-09-07
I notice this situation alot.. sometime in these books they like to advertise easy to follow simple to understand complete instructions.. well this book is better than most I've seen but it still lacks detail on some of the projects.. the truth is most who buy pocket hole jigs are those who have very little woodworking experience and need that extra help in details of the book and plan.. some of the projects in the book are nice and are good starters. the book also brings home the concepts of the pocket hole jig... this would be a great book for a beginner.. however if you already understand how to use a pocket hole jig.. shy away and buy something more challenging.. Danny Proux .. does a nice job with this Book!!
Great tips make this nifty tool even better!.......2004-12-24
I just love this book. I couldn't believe how easy it was to build one of these tables using Proulx's instructions and techniques. The Kreg jig is fabulous on it's own but these instructions make using it even easier.
I initially borrowed this book from the library but liked it so much I bought my own copy. Considering how expensive wood can be, it's well worth the money to have this to refer to.
Great source book for those new to building w/pocket holes.......2004-05-28
The color pictures and exploded diagrams are an outstanding introduction and knowledge builder. Mr. Proulx full color pages helped me solve problems and understand better ways to use this great joinery technique.

Wonderful book.......2003-06-05
This book is so delightful. As a city dweller in Manhattan with a large roof deck of my own, I needed some inspiration for growing plants upwards on several trellises I installed. This book was perfect! The designs a gorgeous, and the writer gives you enough information to duplicate some of the marvels. Also, if you love Paris as I do, you'll love daydreaming over the photographs.
Inspiring..........2002-04-11
Yes, I have a deck built over my garage roof which is accessible from my kitchen/fam. rm. So, I was looking for inspiration on what plants to have there this summer when I happened upon this very attractive book about terrace & rooftop gardens just yesterday at my local bkstore! I am getting lots of ideas from the pics on color combinations, styles and accents. The photos are detailed & altho I haven't read the text yet, it appears to have lots of quotes from the owners perspective on why they chose their plants. The author embellishes this with clear descriptions as well. Photo descriptions usually name the plants shown & I've seen 2 or 3 already of interest that are new to me that I can look up in a gardening guide & perhaps incorporate into my own roof top garden. Ea. section of the book shows several examples of private terrace gardens; i.e. A section on "Open-air dining" showing several terraces planted around tables & chairs for delightful outdoor meals. Another sec. called "Hanging gardens" using bamboo & cascading plants in unusual planting combinations. A thoroughly delightful feast for the eyes; and, one would never guess that all these various styles are within one large city and thusly all in the same approx. climate. I will be devouring this book this spring and enjoying it for many years to come!

Even if you're a parent who prefers the straight and narrow of allopathic medicine, you'll find numerous tricks for soothing your little one in Gentle Healing for Baby and Child. From minor issues like splinters or a skinned knee to a nighttime cough that your prescribed medicine just isn't relieving, master herbalist Andrea Candee offers simple, safe remedies made from ingredients that you'll probably find in your kitchen.
Most chapters are focused on either a specific part of the body (skin, respiratory system, digestive system) or an age group (from infants to teenagers). You may be tempted to head directly to the chapters of most interest to you, but don't skip over "Dosing Guidelines." As with any medication, herbs must be taken properly in order to be safe, and following the simple charts of dosage frequency according to age and weight is an easy way to prevent problems. You'll also find suggestions here for getting some of those hot, pungent herbs down the hatch--it may take more than "a spoonful of sugar" to get your child to ingest doses of cayenne and garlic.
Some items show up repeatedly in Candee's book. Onions, garlic, honey, lemons, and salt are all commonly available and inexpensive, and can help with everything from sore throats (warm salt and lemon gargle) to an ear infection (onion poultice directly on the ear). Garlic, "nature's antibiotic," can take care of colds, parasites, and "anything about to become a something!" Honey works to soothe skin and the respiratory system. (Note that honey shouldn't be given orally to an infant; their immature immune systems might have difficulty fending off any botulism spores that might be present.)
Offering new and friendly ammunition for a parent's arsenal of healing techniques, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is an excellent addition to the family first aid kit and a fantastic way to avoid overreliance on prescription antibiotics. --Jill Lightner

The definitive guide for parents looking for an alternatives.......2002-10-27
Written by a Master Herbalist who has worked with physicians and in her own private practice for the past 25 years, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is the definitive guide for parents looking for an alternative to common treatments for everyday problems. In an accessible format, this guide includes solutions to ailments that occur both inside and outside the body. Got acne? Try an herbal detoxification, an herbal steam, or some Herbal Zinc Zapper. The Zapper recipe contains a mixture of zinc oxide, peppermint, and comfrey. Got a stressed out teen? Dose him with some Honegar - a mixture of honey and vinegar - to restore his chemical balance. In this book, the authors explain that the "floral nectars that comprise honey contain B vitamins and minerals which are calming to the nervous system." While you've got the honey jar out, don't forget to layer it over your little one's skinned knee before applying a bandage. Honey contains natural "anti-microbial properties."
Also included are sections that address subjects such as "Healing Imagery," as well as instructions for dosing herbs, where to find a local natural health practitioner, how to deal with toxicity, and even testing for food reactions. Herbalist Candee has created a helpful, easy to use guide to natural healing for parents. --Reviewed by Michelle Smith
A Wonderful Reference!.......2002-02-21
As a fairly young herbalist myself, i am very pleased with all the informative and varied rememdies suggested in this book. It is very easy to reference and very user friendly; nothing complicated. Andrea Candee offers a gentle manner in her representation of suggested rememdies. I have bought three extra copies to give as baby shower gifts! It's really nice to see such a variation of alternative rememdies/treatment talked about in this book, such as homeopathic, chiropractic, essential oils, onion poultices, and of course herbal preparations. It's nice to be able to make your own decision on a few different suggestions in many cases. It has been a great reference book for myself and other friends with babies as well. I highly recommend this book!!
Natural Healing is Naturally Great!.......2001-06-19
This book is wonderful! It provides useful alternatives to common everyday ailments that are gentle and effective, and it's easy and fun to read, too. Everything you need to know is clearly presented and referenced. The remedies are simple to prepare or obtain, and because they're made from nature's products, you don't have to worry about their effects being too strong for your child, or even yourself. Andrea Candee provides helpful information on how to decide upon which remedy is best as well as how to help "the medicine go down." This is a wonderful reference for every household. I love it!
Natural Remedies for Parents..or Anyone!.......2001-06-08
This book is a resource to revisit again and again. I received "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" as a gift, and was delighted to discover that it's chock-full of suggestions with applications for all family members. The authors have compiled a comprehensive, (but clear and succinct!) collection of natural remedies, illustrations and anecdotes. Introducing a wide range of herbal therapies for day-to-day problems as well as chronic conditions that sometimes can be addressed naturally, Candee does not eschew the value and necessity of skilled, conventional medical care when appropriate. She is a Master Herbalist, experienced and well-versed, and she speaks nationally on her subject, but she also appears to work comfortably within both conventional medical and holistic communities, embracing "the best of what works." Her own parenting experiences are shared in a friendly, comforting way and in clear, simple language. She covers a lot of territory, and often suggests more than one option. In my own work, facilitating mind/body stress-management, I meet concerned parents all around the country beginning to explore integrative therapies and become as informed as possible, to meet their children's health needs, and their own. So I was especially pleased to see that Candee pays considerable attention to the roles of stress-reduction, empowering children, emotional support and compassionate care, with what she refers to as "an educated heart." From acne and allergies...to pneumonia and vaccinations, "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" allows room for individual philosophies and personal preferences as Candee offers her own expertise with a light, gentle touch. There are many roads to Rome. "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child," is a thoughtful tool for parents, or anyone at all, to include in their decision-making for optimal health and wellness, extremely well-organized, and has an unusually detailed table of contents, as well as a comprehensive index for quick searching.
