LAWLESS IN VIETNAM is a memoir of the Vietnam War, circa 1970 - 1971, from, Crew Chief/Doorgunner training in an Army Huey helicopter, to the tedium, trouble, terror and tragedy of serving two tours, in and out of combat, from DaNang to the DMZ. Book Description

In the first volume of his trilogy, noted political philosopher Maurice Cranston draws from original manuscript sources to trace Rousseau's life from his birth in provincial obscurity in Geneva, through his youthful wanderings, to his return to Geneva in 1754 as a celebrated writer and composer.

"[An] admirable biography which is as meticulous, calm, reasonable, and judicious as its subject is passionate and tumultuous."—Keith Michael Baker, Washington Post Book World

"The definitive biography, as scholarly as it is entertaining."—The Economist

"Exceptionally fresh . . . . [Cranston] seems to know exactly what his readers need to know, and thoughtfully enriches the background—both physical and intellectual—of Rousseau's youthful peregrinations . . . . He makes the first part of Rousseau's life as absorbing as a picaresque novel. His fidelity to Rousseau's ideas and to his life as it was lived is a triumph of poise."—Naomi Bliven, The New Yorker

"The most outstanding achievement of Professor Cranston's own distinguished career."—Robert Wokler, Times Literary Supplement

Maurice Cranston (1920-1993), a distinguished scholar and recipient of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of John Locke, was professor of political science at the London School of Economics. His numerous books include The Romantic Movement and Philosophers and Pamphleteers, and translations of Rousseau's The Social Contract and Discourse on the Origins of Inequality.

      Book Description

In January 1996, a van speeding through a red light ended the life Kara Swanson had known. She suddenly joined the 2 million Americans who suffer brain injury each year. It was like being thrust into a foreign country with no map, no way to speak the language, no directions home.

"This is the book I wish I could have read when I was first diagnosed with a brain injury," Kara writes. I tried to take the information that it took me months and years to learn and put it into a short, easy-to-read book that would help survivors and their loved ones better understand the process of recovery."

Written with laugh-out-loud humor, candor, and technical input from medical and legal profesionals, "I'll Carry the Fork!" offers inspiration and practical help to anyone dealing with the aftermath of brain injury. Because as Kara says, "Sometimes when your life ends, you don't actually die."

A great read for a survivor or family member of TBI. Slightly larger print and easy to follow story line. This book puts you in touch with the TRUELY important things in life. Showing some of possitive and humorious bumps in her new learning curve keeps this book from reading like a text book. Wow does it feel better knowing that others share similar experincies.
I have purchased several of these, one for my daughter, and a couple for friends to help them understand me now.
If you ever get the chance to meet Kara DO IT, she is uplifting to speak with.

A delightful book which takes the author from a tragedy and life change to making her new life the best it can be. A wonderful message for those of us having a family member who is a recent traumatic brain injury survivor. It is written with humor but with a valuable message. The chapters are short and written in a manner our TBI survivor is able to read and comprehend it. Thank you for this book.

I never fully understood my dad's head injury, but after reading this humorous story of Kara it made me realize the frustrating effects of brain injury. Just a great book over-all and written on the level of a sixth grader, so it makes it an easy read.

1 out of 5 stars No real medical details, just sentimental mush.......2005-07-15

A personal story of brain injury presented in a sentimental mushy story line. I too am dealing with my brain injury and the process of acceptance, understanding, coping, and movement toward a fulfilling, happy, and peaceful life. It is a difficult process. The author most certainly conveyed her story.
I found the book to be a shallow pep talk with no redeeming qualities. It lacked depth in articulation or any substance to medical fact or rehabilitation. If you are interested in a book with a survivors story that has meat to it read "Over my Head" by Claudia Osborn. I've read it five times and will read it many more times. My family and friends have praised the book for giving them an understanding that I could not communicate so precisely and eloquently. "Over my Head" is simply the best book coveying personal experience with brain injury that I have ever read.

      Book Description

Italy, the country with a hundred cities and a thousand bell towers, is also the country with a hundred cuisines and a thousand recipes. Its great variety of culinary practices reflects a history long dominated by regionalism and political division, and has led to the common conception of Italian food as a mosaic of regional customs rather than a single tradition. Nonetheless, this magnificent new book demonstrates the development of a distinctive, unified culinary tradition throughout the Italian peninsula.

Alberto Capatti and Massimo Montanari uncover a network of culinary customs, food lore, and cooking practices, dating back as far as the Middle Ages, that are identifiably Italian:

o Italians used forks 300 years before other Europeans, possibly because they were needed to handle pasta, which is slippery and dangerously hot.

o Italians invented the practice of chilling drinks and may have invented ice cream.

o Italian culinary practice influenced the rest of Europe to place more emphasis on vegetables and less on meat.

o Salad was a distinctive aspect of the Italian meal as early as the sixteenth century.

The authors focus on culinary developments in the late medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras, aided by a wealth of cookbooks produced throughout the early modern period. They show how Italy's culinary identities emerged over the course of the centuries through an exchange of information and techniques among geographical regions and social classes. Though temporally, spatially, and socially diverse, these cuisines refer to a common experience that can be described as Italian. Thematically organized around key issues in culinary history and beautifully illustrated, Italian Cuisine is a rich history of the ingredients, dishes, techniques, and social customs behind the Italian food we know and love today.

        Book Description

There is keen interest in the exquisite yet simple Italian cuisine and Italian culture. This volume provides an intimate look at how Italians cook, eat, and think about food today. It describes the cornucopia of foodstuffs and classic ingredients. An overview of the typical daily routine of meals and snacks gives a good feel for the everyday life. The changing roles of women are explored with a discussion of the inroads that convenience foods are making. In addition, the current concerns about the food supply, the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, and the slow food movement are tied in to the debates on these issues in the United States. Food is one of the main reasons why many Americans travel to Italy. Yet, the fascination with Italian cuisine is not all about health or taste. There is much more to it. Italian food is perceived and portrayed in the media as representing a whole lifestyle: Italians live la dolce vita, leisurely eating and drinking with friends and families, families are still important, and communities are close knit. The reality of Italian society is more complex, and this volume offers a balanced view of Italian culture and identity through its foodways.

Sewing with vintage textiles provides a unique way to connect with the past while exercising creativity to arrive at something brand new. Fabric magician Jennie Atwood clearly has a knack for turning old tablecloths, hankies, dishtowels, ties, sweaters, and other flea-market finds into exquisite blouses, jackets, pillows, bed linens, table skirts, purses, and children's wear. In Sew Vintage, Atwood offers extensive general directions on design and construction, exploring methods for altering commercial patterns, simple draping techniques on a dress form, finishing details, and further embellishments with beads, buttons, appliqués, and lace. She also explains how to find and clean vintage pieces (wisely cautioning us to steer clear of real antiques) and how to develop a layout that takes best advantage of inherent features, such as running an elaborate tablecloth border along the front and hem of a shirt. Fairly simple step-by-step projects incorporate vintage fabrics in home accessories like potpourri bags and show how to create children's clothing that allows for growing room. Note, however, that the book's major emphasis--garment construction--presumes at least intermediate sewing skill. But anyone with a bit of experience and a desire to look at old fabrics in inventive new ways will enjoy Atwood's confident guidance and the many lovely photos that exhibit her wonderful creations. --Amy Handy

If you're looking for a how to book for taking vintage linens and sewing them into useful items, you've found it in this book. Moderate sewing skills are required, as well as a sewing machine.
Some of the items are small enough to be made out of damaged linen pieces that don't have any antique value.

The projects can be broken down into these catagories-Women's Tops, Children's Dresses, Gift Bags, Pillows, Curtains,& Simple Purses. These projects are nicely done and the end results are tasteful enough to actually wear or use.

This is the book I have been waiting for. I have many old fabrics that I didn't know what to do with - well, I know what to do with them now that I have read this wonderful, well written, fun to read book. It is organized wonderfully, illustrated beautifully and filled with many, many easy to sew ideas, not to mention all that you will learn about taking care of your old textiles. Ms. Atwood does a wonderful job of helping us learn how to use our old fabrics that are sitting in closets and not being put to use. I love this book - every sewer should have it. It is also very reasonably priced for all of the information that is packed into it. Do yourself a favor and order it now. You will not be sorry. Even if you are new to sewing or an old pro. this should be on your bookshelf. It would also make someone very happy to receive as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Really wonderful, but..........2000-10-21

Truly, a fine book, but I doubt it's for beginners. After a brief (30 page) culture and environment description and introduction, there's a list of the miniature orchids you can (possibly) grow...but here is the crux of the problem. The plants are described, but it seems as if the descriptions are simply being quoted from some unknown source; mostly there are no culture descriptions. Most orchids aren't all that cheap, and most growers like to do research on what they're going to buy. Temperature, humidity, resting period, etc are all important...and unless you can do a search on some of these true rarities, the money (and the search time) will be simply wasted. There's simply nothing about them other than the descriptions.

Nang talung, the Thai popular shadow theatre originated in the southern part of the country, where it is still a very popular form of entertainment. It appeared first in the 17th century and represents a new form of Thai shadow theatre different from Nang yai, the classical shadow theatre from central Thailand. This difference is found in shape, size and composition of the shadow figures, as well as in cast, manner of maipulation, performance, music and stage. 147 shadow figures from two Thai and two Swedish collections illustrate the different characters met with in a Nang talung performance

Are your kids like powder kegs--and you never know when they're going to "go off?" Have you ever blown it and raged at or hit your child? In Taming the Dragon in Your Child, authors Meg Eastman and Sydney Craft Rozen focus on the hidden shame of many families--rage--and provide excellent advice and tools for understanding anger patterns, learning self-calming techniques, and managing conflict with kids of all ages. The writing and advice is clear and sensible. Warning:Get out your magnifying glass! The type in the mass-market edition is very dense and small.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, but a distracting format.......2000-05-07

This book was useful to address problems of anger in my family. Eastman begins by helping readers understand the pattern of anger in the household, and then offers strategies to control it. Although we did not implement all of her advice, there were many useful suggestions we integrated into our parenting, with a resulting decrease in anger and tantrums. So it was certainly worth the time and money. My major complaint is that I found the organization of the book distracting. Chapters were short, averaging 7 pages with lots of bullets and ideas that were not completely developed. Typically the reader was pointed to later chapters where these themes would be more fully addressed. The book seemed, at times, as if it were a compendium of 28 oral presentations strung together. A more linear form would have made the book shorter, and more efficient. However, the author's goal was not a complete analysis of family anger, but rather a practical guide to help families. At least this structure did help to make clear what chapters could be skipped over as not relevant to our situation. Overall, a useful book.

                                Book Description

This novel and thoroughly documented study of Sir John Soane (1753–1837) contains the fullest intellectual biography yet published of any English architect. It also sheds new light on eighteenth-century British and continental architectural theory. Dr Watkin enters Soane’s private dialogue with an astonishing array of philosophers, architectural theorists, art-historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists, whose writings he studied while preparing his lectures on architecture at the Royal Academy from 1809. The texts he studied range from classical authors to many of his most famous contemporaries. The book relates Soane’s reading to his own architecture and to his lectures, which are published here in full for the first time, with over one hundred and fifty of his superb lecture illustrations, including twenty-five in colour. Recipient of the 1997 Sir Banister Fletcher Prize

                                          Book Description

The Price of a Dream tells the remarkable story of the Grameen Bank, the groundbreaking "village bank" that has revolutionized the way people around the world fight poverty. The Bank's model--providing collateral-free "micro-loans" for self-employment to millions of women villagers in Bangladesh--has inspired and shaped the thinking of economists, policy makers, business people, development workers and a generation of social entrepreneurs. Both liberal and conservative policy circles have championed the Bank's ability to transform the lives of its clients and help them escape the vicious cycle of deep economic hardship. Drawing upon interviews with villagers, development workers, economists, and the Bank's founder Muhammad Yunus--a recipient of numerous humanitarian awards--the book shows how the Grameen Bank grew from an experiment in one village to an organization that lends billions of dollars in small individual loans.

More than just a casual pass through Bangladesh to investigate Grameen Bank, the micro-credit phenomenon started a quarter century ago by Muhammad Yunus, The Price of a Dream fills in gaps left by other writings. It puts a human face on the poor of this impoverished Asian country, formerly known as East Pakistan. It brings poverty-stricken Bangladeshis into your livingroom as factual, not fictional, folks.

"Aren't all Bangladeshis poor?" you ask. No. There is wealth. But there are also tens of millions of families so impoverished that one cannot begin to understand the depth and breadth of their deprivation without actually visiting this tropical nation or coming to know some of these people through a book such as this.

Bornstein writes in a painterly way. His stories, both sad and glad, weave a mesmerizing pattern of the richness of Bangladeshi life amid trying circumstances. How people cope, how they react to successes and disasters, how they work to pull themselves up economically and socially: every thread is pulled through the loom in due course to render a true and clear representation of lives on the ragged edge. Thanks to loans from Grameen, millions of families have been able to hem that edge, one stitch at a time, to finish off their piece of cloth.

For his part, Yunus, speaking as the economics professor he once was, declares, "Credit is a powerful weapon, and anyone possessing this weapon is certainly better equipped to maneuver the forces around him to his advantage." (p. 228)

Micro-credit empowers the unempowered. No one describes that process better than David Bornstein. The Price of a Dream will open your eyes to the possibility of minimizing the indignity of poverty in our lifetime, if not eliminate it altogether. Every beautiful tapestry starts with a single thread. Even if that first thread is mere hope, it's a worthy place to begin.

I am a junior in highschool. I chose this book from an AP Economics reading list I received this year. When I started reading this book, I expecting a monotonous mass of numbers, terms, and theories. However, I was soon captivated by the story. Bornstein beautifully integrated the story of the Grameen Bank, the lives of its members, and the economic principles behind it.
