Book Description
It has been said, "Vietnam is a country; not a war," but to the service men and women who served between the years of 1955 to 1973, Vietnam has become more than a country; the name represents images of social and political unrest, of death and destruction.
Not only were the armed forces facing the unknown as they were shipped overseas, but those left behind in America were facing fears of potential loss through the ever-departing population of service men and women. Yet the people who waited for their loved ones to return from Vietnam held the very rays of hope that would guide their soldiers home. Such a story is explored in Paul Raisig's new memoir, "Letters from a Distant War: Vietnam from a Soldier's Perspective."
Meticulously detailed and eloquently written, Raisig has incorporated the letters written to his wife during his two combat tours of duty during the Vietnam War while narrating the mundane - and not so mundane - duties of a commander during the Vietnam War. Raisig has written of a love story that thrived despite the distance and the social and political strife between two countries, while allowing readers to understand the mental and physical agonies experienced during a war that drastically changed our nation.

Letters from a Distant War: Vietnam from a Soldier's Perspec.......2004-11-06
Brilliant.....Heartwrenching......Amazing. Raisig's story captures Vietnam better than any other ever told. At times hilarious, at times harrowing, only a genius could write this timely offering.

SOME INSIGHTS.......2006-04-01
The most memorable part of this book is the recounting of Nietzsche's recommendation to a friend of the nineteenth century's version of Cliff notes for a classical work. This,
from a man who prided himself on his access to the Greeks in the original language! Undoubtedly such a supercilious man would come to regret that lapse. The book otherwise has a few historical inaccuracies (for example, the statement that Imperial Germany's colors were black, red and gold - as in the Hapsburg eagle and the republican flag!! - when they were actually black, white and red (Prussian and Hanseatic League flags)). The last chapters also fall into the currently popular feminist diction.
This Book is about a Genius.......2000-04-04
If there is a problem with this book, it is that its conclusion, "Redefining Genius" is still too vague to make any particular genius of much significance. Due to media influences, social thought now is largely a matter of public opinion, and I may have few companions in the belief that, of course, it was quite proper for Nietzsche to rise to an attack upon his own age, its public opinions, and all the ways in which people prefer to fool themselves. I am grateful to this book for its outlook; merely mentioning its title is often enough to convince others that I don't have to agree with them. The index doesn't have a listing for jokes, and the author seems to associate them quite closely with the scandalous life of the composer, Wagner. On page 120, we are told, "If that was not enough, there were Wagner's coarse jokes, which frequently involved Cosima." My own interest in developing the idea of a fetish involving Nietzsche's relationship with the Wagner family has relied on the information in this book, on that very page, that Isolde was born in April 1865, so she was four when Nietzsche first stepped into that family circle. Other sources indicate that Nietzsche stopped visiting the Wagners before Isolde turned twelve, when the composer began trying to teach Nietzsche something about religion. Things which may have been left out of this biography might not be helpful for understanding the nature of genius. Or maybe the worst idea of a genius would be someone who knew what all these people were thinking and wrote it down.
Not too bad.......2000-01-15
I read this book about two years ago in high school. It caught my eye because it was a completely black hardcover book with the title "Young Nietzsche" on the back (of course). Afterwards I had to skip a few classes to read the Hollingdale biography - so great was the inspiration this book provided. This was the first Nietzsche commentary/biography I read. I had struggled with the birth of tragedy and carried it around in an attempt to make myself look smart a few times but I was too lazy to do anything real, and only succeeded in impressing teachers, and I slowly realized that there was really no one to impress. Anyway, I remember the book as being fairly inspiring and very interesting from a purely biographical point of view (can I be more vague or ridiculous?). If you are perhaps a lowly high schooler living in the total darkness of American public education and would like to shine a little light onto you and your fellow prisoners, check this book out. I'm not sure I'd like it as much now that I have become less pretentious... but anyway it is worth reading and its not too long. I think the editorial above gives a good summary but is a bit harsh. The book develops what has become typical as far as hypotheses go, but it offers some sagacity for anyone who wants to learn or find out what it means to learn in that it provides the means - a step up from this is Monk's biography of Wittgenstein. The absolute worst thing about the book is that it leaves you hanging and so you had better buy the Hollingdale biography too (I don't work for amazon, BTW) and then read the real stuff. Well I hope you like the book if you buy it. I hadn't even thought of Harold Bloom until I read that editorial... You won't get a lot out of the book, but you might get a LITTLE, if you catch my meaning. It's the style the gets you out of the cave. The more scholarly person will turn a cold shoulder and avoid second hand ambition.

Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.
Buy the updated version!.......2007-05-09
Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!
Well Written!.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.
Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.
Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.

Customer Reviews:
The BEST Book on Breastfeeding.......2007-10-06
I used this book 27 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. I just bought it for my friend's daughter who is having her first and wanting to breastfeed. It has been revised and updated a little, but retains the same great, easy to understand information. The best part is the table of contents. It breaks down the layout of the book to small chunks of information allowing you to quickly find specific information you're looking for,ie: feeding positions, what to do about blocked ducts, building up your milk supply, etc. I highly recommend it!!
An Easy to Read and Informative Book .......2007-06-12
The book facts are well organized in this book with relevant headings for each chapter. New mothers would find this book exceptionally useful as it contains information other than breastfeeding. Tips on how to eat a well balanced diet and understanding your postpartum body are put across in simple terms. I would recommend this as a baby shower gift to mothers who intend to breastfeed.
Very helpful.......2007-01-03
This book was extremely helpful to me as a first time mother. It was very easy to read and to use as a reference, and I'm sure it helped me to continue breastfeeding when I was feeling inadequate and unsure of myself. Now my 4 month old is still breastfed and is growing like a weed!
great for beginners.......2006-08-16
I love this book. As a first time mother, I could not have been happier with the extensive explanations and information provided. It covers all sorts of issues, not just problems that you may encounter. It also provides peace of mind assistance in the middle of the night when you can't call someone about difficulties you are having.
Good instruction, too opinionated.......2006-02-10
This book offered a lot of good information about breastfeeding and it was very complete in that sense.
It gives every reason why breastfeeding is a good thing and that's motivational. However, I bottle-fed in the past and I could have done without all of the opinions about bottle-feeders.
Being a new mother (whether it's the first time or the sixth)is an emotional time and can be overwhelming in the beginning. This book sets you up to feel like a failure if, for one reason or another, you are unable to breastfeed.
I am a healthy adult and I was bottle-fed. I have wonderful, brilliant and healthy children who have been bottle-fed. I object to the statement that this is the best thing you can ever do for your child. I agree it is beneficial, but I know there is a lot worse mothers are doing to their babies than offering a bottle of formula.
I really don't agree with the section about breastfeeding children 6, 7 and even 8 years old. Come on. That's OK, but formula is the start of a dull and unhealthy future? Please.
I wish they could have written this book to inform new mothers and left the opinions completely out of it.
Book Description
Apples carved into graceful swans, vegetables lovingly shaped into roses, and a watermelon "scalloped" and adorned with carved fleur de lis: every one of these splendid morsels is almost too beautiful to eat! For a special meal that looks as delicious as it tastes, take out the knives, scoops, slicers, and parer and transform the food into art. Instead of everyday carrot curls, cut them into tiny hearts that blossom from watercress stems. Why put out a pat of butter, when you can mold it into wreaths and watering cans filled with flowers? Add ringlets of lemon to a fish dish or to the side of a glass. For a breathtaking centerpiece, form an ice mold embedded with flowers. And, for the finale: a three-tiered cake that looks fresh from the garden with sugar lilies of the valley on the bottom, peach-colored hyacinths in the middle, and classic daisies gathered on top!
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2006-10-08
This book includes excelent ideas, is well organized and has good pictures. Some of the instructions, though, I found a little difficult to follow initally: It took me several practice session to figure out exactly how to carve a rose on a potato.

Excellent beginner reference.......2007-09-11
This was a very good book for beginner and intermediate pen turners. Good photos and explanations as well as good resource information.
Great look into penmaking.......2007-09-06
I had been considering getting into pen turning to expand my woodworking hobby so I got this book to see what the craft is about. After reading this book, it definitely is something I will pursue. This book does a great job of explaining all the different angles involved with the different types of products you can use. I feel that I am much better educated about the craft and look forward to turing my first pen.
Great book.
The only book you need for pens.......2003-09-27
This book is head and shoulders about anything else out there on pen turning. After reading the Sing and Cripps primers I ordered this. There is no question that this book should be the one you read. It is well organized, clearly written and gives multiple ways to perform each step in the pen making progress.
It starts with an historical discussion which may or may not suit your tastes, but then goes into very good detail about the equipment, supplies, wood selection, kit types, finishing products, glues etc that are available and what is required/suggested based on your needs.
Next it goes through the making of a basic pen in good detail with the minimalist type supplies etc. Each subsequent section details a new type of pen, but also adds different ways to do each of the basic procedures and details different equipment that can be used. Through this process, the reader gets a good understanding of what is out there and how to use it. There is then a section on alternate materials and how they differ in the treatment required to use them. Then a section on decorating and variation in styles. This is followed by a tips and tricks section, which will help solve some of the common problems, as well as, provide tricks to improve quality and speed. Finally there is a very good gallery with a multitude of styles from multiple contributors.
If you can only buy one book, it would be foolish to go with any other. You will find yourself refering back to it often and will save yourself a lot of money and headaches through the advise the authors give.
Pen turning book excels!.......2001-04-19
Dick Sing is supposedly the guru of pen and pencil turners. He has written several widely read books on the subject. Until recently, Sing's only competition was author Mike Cripps. But all of Sing and Cripps books pale in comparison to Christensen and Burningham's "Turning Pens and Pencils". This book is so good that it's hard to begin describing its numerous attributes. It's an excellent book for the beginning wood turner and pen maker. But it goes way beyond anything that Sing or Cripps provide. Christensen and Burningham are creative designers and it shows in their pen making. The book is packed with useful suggestions on everything from cutting and boring pen blanks to pen assembly. These guys are pros with years of experience, and it shows. I was stunned by their creative ideas such as the use of polymer clay in lieu of wood. The quality of their pens is simply awesome. It would be impossible for me to commend this book too strongly. If you like to turn wood and you're interested in pen and pencil making, you owe it to yourself to get this book. You'll be glad you did.
Book Description
Pens and pencils made at the wood lathe are becoming increasingly popular. These unique writing instruments are fantastic sellers at art and craft shows, cherished treasures for family, and fabulous gifts. Kits to make a variety of styles are widely available, but the techniques to make a pen which works well and looks spectacular are harder to find. This book fills the need with 273 step-by-step color photos and helpful text. Skilled wood turner Dick Sing provides detailed instructions and a wealth of tips and techniques for twelve different styles of pens. Advice on selection of materials, set-up, turning, and finishing techniques, and tips for final assembly of the pens make this book the ultimate reference for the field., 273 photos, 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
For Starting Out.......2006-05-01
I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend. I've advanced to the stage where I'm getting pretty good at making dowels on an expensive lathe, and was feeling like I needed to find something that made me feel more productive. If I've got it figured right, my first pen will cost me about $4,000. After that, hopefully, economy of scale should set in (I hope). If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm pretty good in a wood shop, but an absolute newbie at turning.
I think my friend was being kind. Dick Sing assumes you have some familiarity with small gouges, skews and scrapers, which I do, and does little or no explanation of the turning part of pen making. He focuses on the intricacies of the equipment that is peculiar to pen making (mandrels, drilling jigs, etc.). Truth is, basic pen making is not a challenging occupation, and Dick Sing offers lots of pictures and straightforward text. This could have been called Pen Making for Dummies. In other words, anyone who can make a dowel on a lathe should be able to follow this book. Even me.
What is missing, though, is and real focus on creative pen making. But this I mean grooves, beads, and chatter work sort of things that can turn a pen into something other than a useful dowel. He does play around a bit with materials and an interesting desk pen, but for the most part this book is about kit making and not about custom pen making. Even so, it is a terse, but very useful, introduction.
Great how to on making pens.......1998-12-30
64 pages, full color, 9 gallery pages. Step by step pictures with detailed text on how to make pens/pencils on the lathe. This book was a must for making my first pen, and a great reference as I have progressed. Pens include: Standard twist (and pencil), Dome-top, Rollerball and Fountain, Cigar pen, Flat-top click pen, Flat-top twist pen, and desk pen.
An outstanding presentation of "How-to" for pen making........1998-09-29
A very clear and concise presentation of what is required for making excellent writing instuments. Great color photos of all materials and instructions of each step in the selection of woods, and hardware, how to drill, match and assemble the components. The number of ways to varie the appearance of the instruments. He does not go into the discusion of lathes. He concentrates making pens and pencils and the variations that can be created. I have his other book, "UNIQUE & UNUSUAL PENS from the wood lathe" and I refer to them quite ofen for new ideas. I also refer to "TURNING PENS AND DESK ACCESSORIES" by Mike Cripps which I also use

A colleague's perspective.......2006-03-09
This book is accurate, easy to read, and written by a very well respected HSV researcher. It is slightly varied from most herpes books because is told from the perspective of a pediatrician. The size makes it approachable and easy to read in a short time, too.
Everything you need to know in easy terms.......2001-02-11
I found this book to be a very good source of information. The terms were explained well and completely. I especially enjoyed the chapters that fully described herpes and it's transmission. Also, the chapter covering home remedies was very useful for what actually works and what is a waste of money. Because the author is a doctor, the book was scientific and complete with it's facts and vaccine information. I loved this book.
Medically Useful, Personally Dry.......2000-04-20
* In general, this book helped me and my partner to understand the basic clinical facts and some lesser known clinical information about herpes, transmission, symptoms, treatment, etc. * Re: transmission: The author offers perspectives which surprisingly contradict some commonly held ideas about what is "safe" and "not safe", which makes this book particularly useful, if not a bit scarey. * Re: legal issues: The section on disease transmission and the ethics of disclosure is also well done and important. The author cites a case where someone who was lied to about a partner's STD status was awarded $600,000 in damages for pain and suffering, given the lifetime effects of herpes transmitted without honest disclosure. * Re: approach and tone: The book's appeal would have been increased with a more personal tone, with the author's voice addressed to us folks out here grappling with these difficult issues, and often at risk from partial knowledge and word-of-mouth guidelines. As it is the book is rather dispassionate, as if the busy physician author had transcribed a series of medical school lectures. * Re: also needed: Colored photographs of what typical outbreaks look like would have been very useful, as an addition to his useful black & white line drawings of virus transmission details. A good bit more could also have been provided about details of "safer sex" and relationship issues since we most need that out here in the real world. * Re: bottom line: As a clinical medical fact source it is an excellent and useful book.

Prev. reviews misinterpretation of book and mythical dragon.......1998-12-10
This author has a lot of titles written for doctors, but this book of his is apparently for patients. The previous reviewer seemed to be looking for more medical information than common questions and experiences in the book. The "dragon" referred to is "mythical" fear and the book is suppose to help patients, victims, come to terms with having Herpes. Something that will not ever go away. Other books discuss the virus in more detail, this one talks about having Herpes and dealing with the "dragon" which is not herpes, but the fear one feels when having to deal with it.
Quite disappointing........1998-08-28
The author of this book chooses to refer to herpes as "The Dragon" not just once but over and over again. In todays society where this virus is so incredibly common and widespread AND stigmatized by the media we don't need it to be referred to so negatively. Especially when many times the people who are unfortunate enough to have been exposed to the virus have such feelings of guilt and worthlessness and despair.
Also, the information presented does not seem to be thorough enough at all.
I have found a much more exceptional and informational book to be "The Truth about Herpes" by Stephen L. Sacks.
It is packed with very important info in a manner that respects the reader and provides him/her with accurate realistic information.

Book Description
These stories are not just biographies, but historical and political analyses of the benefits that accrued to the state and its people as a result of these politicians' self-serving ruthlessness, told with wit and humor and a considerable dose of irony.
Book Description
This is a major new student edition of the text described as "the first modern classic of English history." Francis Bacon's insight into human motives, his life-long experience of politics and government, and his remarkable literary skills, render this History of the Reign of King Henry VII a major work of English literature and an important document in the history of political thought. The edition also includes other relevant writings by Bacon, generous editorial footnotes explaining the historical and political issues of the period, and a substantial glossary.
