Excellent resource, but questions remain.......2007-07-12
I thought the angels had answered my prayers when I saw this book at my local pharmacy. It is packed absolutely chock full with great, easy to understand information about digestion, the mind-gut connection, and various digestive diseases. I know "natural medicine" seems crunchy granola and therefore easy to dismiss, but logic (and many well-designed studies) make many of the recommendations in this book hard to refute, and definitely worth trying. As someone who has been to dozens of traditional doctors and has still not found relief for my gut, being given more information and options for treating these distressing problems is a godsend and not to be sneezed at. However, after reading it cover-to-cover, I still have questions.
My main issue: I have symptoms of several of the problems talked about in the book, and unfortunately the treatments for these problems are often contradictory. I really should eat more yogurt and other cultured products for the beneficial flora--unless I have candidiasis or a food allergy. I should eat whole grains for the fiber--unless I'm allergic or have candidiasis. I should drink water right before I go to bed--unless I have reflux. The list goes on and on. I have NO IDEA which of my stomach problems I should tackle first and which things I can try for one problem that won't significantly worsen another problem. I find I'm so confused that I really want to visit the clinic that Ms. Berkson talks about working at, but she gives no contact info in the book and I was unable to find anything online. Barring that, I would have really appreciated some information for how to FIND a clinic like that one, or a doctor who will work with me to find holistic and natural remedies.
Having said that, I still think this book is an excellent resource that is well-written, well-organized, and well worth reading.

I appreciated all the other reviews on this book before buying; and I find, too, that it FULLY deserves the five stars from the other readers! I also like that it's instantly available in digital format while we wait for the hard copy to arrive--what a great deal from Amazon and publisher, and with digestive problems, the sooner we get them remedied, the sooner our family member feels better and can get on with life!

This book is very thorough. It covers in depth the right foods, the wrong foods, what certain foods, supplements, and drugs do to digestive tract. It covers some history of digestive diseases, food alergies, home treatment, etc. The author makes no promises that this information will solve your particular digestive problem, however, she present the information honestly.

This is another wonderful books of Gerald Durrell's memories of his time on the island of Corfu prior to the Second World War. He takes us back to another time and place before the world changed for good.
Each chapter is a separate story and rememberence of those days when as a young man he marvels at not only the natural world around him, but also the various people he encounters and learns to appreciate. It is easy to get lost in one of these stories and feel like you are there with him on a hot summer day with his faithful dogs tagging along beside him.
I recommend this book to anyone who not only loves nature, but also can appreciate a time gone by when people were different and even strangers were looked as guests. This book is one that I intend to read again and again in the coming years and will appreciate the stories just much each time as the first time.

Gerald Durrell is the younger brother of Lawrence Durrell. The island of Corfu lies off of the Albanian and Greek coastlines. The family settled there to escape the deary English weather.
Gerald's mother fought a losing battle with the Greek language. The family members became familiar with all of the peasants in the region. Gerald had a tutor named George who was an adept of fencing and an adult scientist friend named Theodore.
Gerald visited the rock pools while his sister swam. Margo's sun bathing bothered a church functionary, a monk. Gerald sought permission to follow a fisherman, to accompany him in his boat when he fished at night. The fisherman used a trident to catch scorpios.
There was a myrtle forest near the family's house. Gerald received a rich dark brown donkey for his birthday. The donkey was used by Gerald to transport things. Larry brought home friends, artists and writers, and brought home an artist who could play the accordian, Sven.
Theordore had told a countess that Gerald, who was a fairly young boy at the time, was a naturalist and had a number of pets. The countess offered to give him a white owl who had an injured wing. Gerald went to fetch it and to meet her on his donkey.
He wanted to add baby hedgehogs to his menagerie. When he went away for a weekend his sister overfed them and they died. The book is joyous and colorful. The snippets above are used to give the reader a sense of what to expect.
Another fix of Durrell family fun.......2001-02-06
I eagerly read this after "My Family and Other Animals" (which I had enjoyed immensely). It contains stories which were omitted from "My Family" and while the offerings were still magical and wonderfully well-written and sometimes hilarious (especially the story about the turtle), it lacked the memorability of its predecessor. There was also no real structure in the order of the stories, this is more of a miscellaneous collection.

I read Gerald Durrell's books 10 years ago, while I was still living in Romania. I loved his books from the first page to the last and literally I couldn't put them down until I finished them. The best humour I ever met in books! His stile is unique. I am planning on reading all of them again in English. I would recommend them to anyone!

Making Plant Places is a wonderful book for people who want to do more with their plants than simply stick them in pots on a shelf. The projects are really striking and so original -- you would expect to pay a fortune for them in the store, but the materials used are really inexpensive and the finished product is just beautiful. (Who knew that chicken wire could be so upscale?) I'm not especially artistic or crafty, but the directions were easy to follow and the end result is amazing. I particularly love the wall sconces and the fancy wire hangers because they're so unique and it really changes the look of a room to have plants hanging from the walls and ceiling, not just sitting on the coffee table. Gorgeous photos in the colour section, too. Highly recommended!

My parents used corporal punishment. Because of this, I vowed never to spank my children. I didn't know how to discipline, though - what to do IN PLACE of spanking. My daughter is now almost 30 and the mother of my beautiful 3 year old granddaughter. My daughter graduated from college, was an honor student praised by all her teachers throughout school, she never got into trouble the law, or misbehaved beyond giving me a bit of "normal teenage attitude". And she wasn't spanked! My son is 21, mentally handicapped, a well behaved, loving adult with a great sense of humor. Spanking is useless with a special needs child.
To the reviewer between 8 & 13 who wrote "it's ridiculous not to spank", my heart breaks for you. You're being lied to if someone has told you that spanking is necessary.
The author doesn't suggest that parents NOT discipline their children. What he HAS written is that there are other methods of discipline besides spanking. And, BTW, the author has an advanced education and clinical studies to support his work. Bryan's wife

This guy is saying not to spank kids. That's ridiculous. In my opinion, spanking kids is right. Not hitting. Not beating. Spanking. Not as hard as you can. But spanking nontheless. I am outraged at this guy, who obviously never even CONSIDERED, the slightest POSSIBILITY that the other side might be right. I hope he knows what he's doing: his kids, and kids that he knew, that he said not to discipline, and that he didn't discipline, may become the adults who shrug and either throw him into the nursing home or go the path of enuthasia. Not trying to be cruel, but that's a warning: If we don't train kids now, actively and effectively, then we are doomed.
And BTW, this is coming from someone who is older than eight and younger than thirteen. I believe this butts heads with the Truth.

I have to say that this book is very well written. I feel that everyone should read this book, although I know some would probably never even consider reading a book like this. I didn't believe in spankings before I read this book, but now I don't feel so left out. Everyone I know spanks their kids and I am the "odd ball". I get criticized alot, but this book has made me feel alot better about who I am as a parent and a person. The author did a good job explaining why he believes the way he does and I have to give him credit. He is very intelligent and brave.

I love this book it is teaching parents not to spank their kids. I mean pick on someone your own size. beating up on little people means your a real coward. Children have rights to they are human beings. I don't care what the bible says.

It must seem pretty odd to have such a high opinion of a
pretty remote subject: the biography of a peripatetic,
19th century German architect. But the author, Harry
Mallgrave, is uniquely qualified to explore the vexatious
artistic and architectural disputes of the 1830s to the 1870s
in such a way that the major themes of the century run
through the career - indeed, through the blood - of Gottfried
Semper. And this is no accident for Semper, a fiery
personality, was a central participant in the intellectual
crusade that gave us "modern" culture.
In this way, not only do we come to understand the roots of
the contemporary professional dilemmas in architecture, but
we are encouraged to see the larger, synthetic patterns of
German intellectual life that are so important to the
formation of our modern (and post-modern) approach to
"the good life."
I highly recommend the book, notwithstanding the rather
daunting price tage, and believe that this long-awaited
study marks an important contribution not only to the
overall intellectual history of the nineteenth century,
but it similarly marks a new standard in the writing of
architectural biography. Mallgrave's mastery of fact and
interpretation is exemplary; his style, perfectly suited to
his task.
