Book Description
Martin Leake served in the Boer War and World War I and was the first man awarded the Victoria Cross twice; his story is re-created with the help of eyewitness accounts.
Book Description
With this book, Jacques Barzun pays what he describes as an "intellectual debt" to William James—psychologist, philosopher, and, for Barzun, guide and mentor. Commenting on James's life, thought, and legacy, Barzun leaves us with a wise and civilized distillation of the great thinker's work.
Customer Reviews:
James as Hero.......2006-01-12
This biography inspires. Obtain a copy and read it. It made me wish that I had known James, perhaps as one of his students at Harvard during "the nineties". He was a great mind and a great man, or as Barzun calls him, "the magnanimous man": a "loveable genius" and a true hero. If someone who comes to know about James, particularly through this book and James' own writing, can't consider him to be hero, then this world simply has no heros. The reader of Barzun's warm treatment delights along with the author in his lifelong awe of the power of James.
A walk to remember!.......2002-11-21
After reading 5 of his books now, I'm not sure there's much that Jacques Barzun can't do. Honestly, I, like most people, think they understand William James and I, like most people, found out that I was further from him than I thought. In an engaging thrill of a book, Barzun explains James- dare I say it- better than James explained James. Of course, WIlliam James, who, when pragmatism is differentiated from pragmaticism, pioneered a completely new system of thought. As such, he did not always express himself well. His "Pragmatism" befuddled more people than not and "The Meaning of Truth," meant as a clarification, confused those not already scratching their heads. In the end, James fell by the philosophical wayside until Barzun dusted our friend off and re-introduced us.
Barzun explains James' pragmatism from the ground up, so to speak. He starts with "The Principles of Psychology," which is really one of the best written pieces of American non-fiction on the planet and James' philosophical starting point. Next, he goes into "Pragmatism" and "The Meaning of Truth" taking much of the ambiguity out of a philosophy already difficult to the unaccustomed. Next, "A Pluralistic Universe" gets a summation along with "Varieties of Religious Experience." I hope I am not leaving you with the imppression that Barzun is doing any of this in an academically dry, sardonic manner. Nope. Just like James, his words bubble with excitement and humongous energy.
Honestly, before I started this book, I wasn't the biggest fan of William James and after, I'm still not the biggest fan of Wiliam James (preferring John Dewey much more). Still, I've come away the better for getting to know Barzun and James; i've read a great book and learned a bit more about a great (if tragic) philosophy. Also, read "The Metaphysical Club" and James' own "Principles of Psychology."

In these difficult, sometimes violent, times, how can we nurture children who are both good and happy? How can we help them stay safe, be respectful, and reach their full potential? Nurturing Good Children Now outlines precisely what is important to foster in our kids, and how to raise children who have a deep sense of values and an enthusiastic spirit. The most essential traits that children need to thrive in today's world are: mood mastery, expressiveness, peer smarts, body comfort, team intelligence, respect, passion, focus, caution, gratitude. This compassionate book offers unflinching social commentary, the latest research on child development, and practical advice. We can protect our children's sense of integrity. We can teach them to love learning; to hold onto their passion; to be comfortable with their bodies; to get along with their peers without succumbing to peer pressure; and to manage their emotions. Well Done and Useful.......1999-08-28
Another book on the obvious and commonsense, but still worth your time for its unique perspective on the influence of the outside world on families and possible responses. It is well conceived and put together. Still, it should be read in bits to prevent good idea overload. And it will remind you of things you've heard before. But read it...it will open your eyes and heart to new ways of thinking, above all being the premise that you NEED TO KNOW YOUR KID!
solid, informative help for parents today.......1999-02-09
This is one of the best books I have ever read about how to help your child (and yourself as a parent). The author pulls no punches and lays out a foundation of ten solid ways to help your child's development. He talks about different types of children and approaches to use with each one. I liked the expectations of respect and consequences that seem to be lacking in many parenting books written today. I wish I had this book when my children were younger but it's a book you can use from toddlers to teens.

Creating a fine wine is not so unlike creating a fine guide to wine. They both take craft and inspiration, patience and a passion for quality. Jacqueline Friedrich possesses those attributes in spades, and with them, she's put together the definitive guide to the Loire, its wines and cuisine, filling a niche that's been empty a long time. As one would savor a fine wine, Friedrich takes her time, dwelling here on the local foods of Anjou, there on the Muscadets of Sèvre-et-Maine. Her encyclopedic guide takes on the 60 or so appellations in the five wine regions of the Loire, describing the history, soil, and vintners of each, and rating more than 600 wineries. With sections on local cheeses, sausages, and fish dishes, Friedrich's scholarly approach and delightful prose makes this an inspiring read and a necessary guide. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
Veuve Clicquot-Wine Book of the Year
Winner of the Julia Child Award
Winner of the James Beard Award
Here, finally, is the first comprehensive guide to the five wine regions of the Loire. It is written with passion, understanding, and authority. Friedrich explores the Loire's sixty-odd appellations, explaining each one's history, soils, climate, and vintners. The author rates over six hundred wineries, giving tasting notes and lively sketches of the individual producers. Friedrich describes the food traditions of each of the five regions--the Nantais, Anjou and Saumur, Touraine, the Sancerrois, and the Auverngne, introducing fishermen, charcutiers, cheesemakers, and farmers. There are maps, a glossary, and wine itineraries for travelers. It will remain a classic well into the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensible Guide for a Trip of a Lifetime!.......2001-12-01
Do you long to travel deeper into "la France profound" than even the best package tour? Do you like exceptional wines but realize you will never have seen many of the best ones on a winelist in the U. S.? Where are those great small restaurants and country inns that don't make it into the Michelin guide? Which are the typical (and best) cheeses of the region? Where are the best places to buy local breads and specialty baked items? Jacqueline Friedrich's 1998 Wine and Food Guide to the Loire is truly enlightening on these points.
We used her book to develop our own 14 day tour of the Loire Valley and, thanks to many of her tips, it was "a trip of a lifetime". Buy and read this book; take notes; rent a car...! With this level of authentic local information, you can make magic.
We culled what appealed to us from the book and every single thing we used was "spot on" and special. As examples, we stayed at the Domaine de Mestre, an elegant farm house run by the local mayor (his wife is one of the best artisinal soap makers in France) and we felt like we knew them a bit before we arrived thanks to this book. We visited the Troglo'tap in Turquant, where dried apples are still made using time-honored hand techniques in an ancient tufa cave workshop. We never would have found places like these without the book. Without the author's honest but evocative descriptions, we would not have had the faith to look for and enjoy these or many other places we visited.
The wine information is copious and detailed: a reader can, purely by reading the text, select wines that accord with ones own preferences. Armed with notes from this book, you can find the wines you would not want to pass over on a winelist just because there were so many names and who knew which ones to pick out?
In short, this book is a tool for travel. It is beautifully written but it is not a memoir. Select the places and details that interest you. Because of the small size of the localities where some of the best things are located, it was not practical to include a map with the book. Get a specialized one for the Loire Valley and use it as a companion to the text. This book is a classic of travel reference.
Loire Valley Wine.......2000-07-25
This book was very helpful in our tour of the Loire Valley. We used it to visit wineries in both Chinon and Vouvray. As there are quite a few places to visit, Ms. Friedrich's commentary about each vignoble and her rating system were very useful.
One place in particular we did visit was SCEA Charles Joguet in the Chinon region. We mentioned the nice write-up he received in this book, and he said that he had the book and that Ms. Friedrich only lived right around the corner, this story really brought the book and the region to life for me. His facility includes a cave towards the back of the property where we tasted several wines and purchased some as well. As a professional, he took the name and address of the English friend, who resides in France, with whom we were visiting, in order to add her to his mailing list. He then told me how to purchase his wines in Pennsylvania.
Without Ms. Friedrich's book we would never have gone to this property as it is off the beaten path, but well worth the visit.
If you're headed to the Loire and want to do more than the usual tourist visiting of the chateaux then this book is indispensable.
A must-have for any culinary visit to the Loire.......2000-04-08
I had the book along with us the weekend I proposed to my fiance, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Great background on both food and wines that are local to the area, along with plenty of suggestions for itineraries for wine tours. My only complaint is that she should have included a few more phones and addresses for some of the restaurants and vineyards she recommends, since it can be hard to find some of her marquis suggestions. Excellent book overall with a clear passion for her subject matter!

Great Information!!.......2002-02-28
Sylvia Wilson's information and advice are outstanding. I have personally used the techniques discussed in this book and I believe they have spared me from several potential dog bites. Anybody with children who spend time around dogs or who spend time in park areas where dogs are often off-leash, should read this book and teach these techniques to their kids.
training dogs (rottweiler).......2001-01-04
hi there i need training dogs rott weiler or books
Not for professionals.......2001-01-01
This book is a decent primer for those who are completely unfamiliar with dogs. For those of us who are already in a line of work which involves dealing with potentially agressive dogs, there is nothing new here.
I found Ms. Wilson's section explaining why service personnel has such a high bite rate to be ridiculous, insulting and unfounded. She attributes the bite rate among meter readers et.al. to "fear of the unknown". Also, she claims misinformation is perpetuated through "lunch room talk", describing 3 types of people: those who advocate agression toward dogs, those who believe everything those people say, and folks who know what they are doing yet remain silent.
First of all, her research is suspect - meter readers are in the field all day. Where is this mythical lunch room upon which they converge and discuss work?
The reason we get bit is not through fear, and I resent her depiction of us as a bunch of cowering morons who don't know how to act around a dog. The number one reason we get bit is SURPRISE, not fear. And by the way, there is very little "unknown" for us to fear. We know our routes, we have information about almost all the dogs we must interact with. We get bit when a new dog shows up out of nowhere, or when their behavior changes suddenly i.e. the owner shows up on the scene and the dog becomes protective. Or when an owner actually sics their dog on us.
These are people who must enter a strange dog's home turf hundreds of times a day. I think this qualifies us every bit as much as dog behavior professionals as the author. Meter readers are a courageous bunch with a lot of heart - we have to deal with danger on a daily basis, and not only from dogs. I'd like to see the author spend the day breaking into backyards in a high crime rate neighborhood in 100+ degree heat for 8 hours. Then she would be qualified to tell the world how little courage we have. We are not a fearful group by any means, and the majority of us LOVE dogs.
If you are a beginner, take to heart the advice here. Don't corner a dog, don't offer your hand, don't stare, be extra careful around multiple dogs, be aware the behavior can change suddenly with the presence of the owner, etc. If you are a professional, don't waste your money. You already know everything in this book.
Good for other dogs, not so good for yours........2000-06-18
The author presents some interesting theories as to what makes a dog bite, but offers few solutions other than calling her in to fix things. For North American readers, this presents a problem as her Bark Busters business is in Australia. She also has many touching stories, but that's not why I bought the book.
I had hoped that this book would offer me tips on how to retrain my dog's aggressive behavior, but the tips given focus mainly on keeping a dog from biting you and not on how to stop bad behavior.
If you are interested in a new approach to canine aggression psychology, you might be interested in this book. If you are interested in dog training, I recommend trying a different book instead.

A beautiful book.......2006-03-17
I enjoy this book and similiar ones that are based on a Waldorf-education approach to crafting. The projects are well-explained and useful as well as beautiful. "Kids Embroidery" is a down-to-earth book of crafting with easy to follow directions.
Excellent Embroidery Book.......2004-11-25
I recently purchased the how-to-book of Kids Embroidery, by Kristin Nicholas. It's terrific. The book is descriptive with step by step lessons on how to make an embroidery project. I have 3 girls, elementary school age that can follow the directions in the book. It's exciting to see the vivid photos of multi-cultural children in the book, as well as the illustrations of how-to's. I would recommend this embroidery book for anyone who'd like to give a gift to a child or adult, buy for themselves, or donate to a teacher's classroom for projects during school. This book will keep the kids busy for hours, and in the end, they'll have crafted a beautiful project as a gift or for themselves.

The author seems to really "get" kids; the directions and illustrations make each step involved in the projects easy to follow. The projects highlighted make the book accesible for both brand new and more experienced needle workers. My children are enjoying the feeling of accomplishment and pride as they complete each project. I'm giving this book to lots of kids on my holiday shopping list--they'll love it!
Keeping our Kids Busy.......2004-11-19
When your children tell you they are bored all you need to do is acquaint them with Kristin Nicholas' "Kids Embroidery". Children of all ages will enjoy projects that can be worn, utilized or displayed . Best of all the instructions are clear and beautifully illustrated some adults might even give them a try .Eleanor Cashen

unique and insightful.......2007-05-13
A must read for first time mothers. An unbiased reveiw of your options. I give this as a gift to all my pregnant friends. well written and relevant
Empowered with The Birth That's Right for Me........2006-09-08
This was a really great book although it was not what I expected exactly. I was expecting some sort of quiz that would send me in the direction of a specific method based on my personality. That didn't happen. But it did explain, it great detail, what goes down during labor, birth, c-section if you have to have one, and post-partum. Not a one size fits all explanation, but a variety of things that happen to different women kind of explanation. During these essays, it did go through various coping strategies based on what one might do if that had a dental abscess and had to wait for an appointment or something like that. The big question, how do you cope with fear, anxiety, pain in your every day life? Here's a list of ways that might correspond to that during the birth process. I feel like I know a lot more about what to expect, what things might feel like, and the wide variety of alternate endings that can go down. I feel better just knowing something about that stuff. And I feel somewhat empowered knowing what I can ask for if I want/need it too. This book really drove home getting a support system in place and that I do not have to conform to any specific method, which I really appreciate a lot. I would highly recommend this book to any first time mother who wants to know what she is in for and is not sure she and any specific method are a match. It will help you build a great foundation for your birthing plan.
Incredible life-changing book!.......2006-06-20
A MUST-read! This book is a personalized guide to pregnancy and birth for every new mommy. Being pregnant for the first time is an awesome but overwhelming experience. This book helps pregnant women better understand all of the physical and emotional changes that are happening to them and is reassuring and comforting in that it guides you to do what's right for you. My pregnant world forever changed upon meeting Lisa Gould Rubin. Her guidance and support led to an incredible birth experience.
The power of informed choices.......2006-05-02
My husband and I were honored to have Lisa Gould Rubin assist with the birth of our daughter. The same spirit she brought to our lives is within these pages. This book is a must-read for all expecting mothers to empower them with the information to make choices that are right for them and their family.
The Birth That's Right for You.......2006-04-13
I am 7mos pregnant and read this book in preparation for child birth. The book is amazing! It provides non-judgmental advice and explains that child birth is not a formula. It is about being open and flexible and doing what is right for "you". It outlines and educates you on options and scenarios for child birth, breast feeding and what to expect post birth. My husband and I feel much more prepared and comfortable about child birth after reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
one of the best.......2005-05-09
This book gives a very fair assessment of all interventions and tests. There are reasons why and why not for everything. It does give recommendations at the end of each chapter but I didn't pushed into anything. I had never heard about letting a baby lay on the mom's tummy until s/he is ready to find a breast. It makes sense. Growing up on the farm, I witnessed many new babies do exactly this. I plan on buying this book for baby shower gifts.
WONDERFUL!.......2004-01-20
I've had two babies, and boy do I wish that this book had been available for the first one! It plainly tells you your options, and backs up the authors recommendations with simple facts - of course those facts that aren't always easily obtained depending on who you're asking! Thanks Joyce Barrett!
Made me feel guilty for some of my choices.......2002-11-14
This book does a great job of making pregnant women aware of the need to advocate for their rights and not just let their doctor call all the shots, but it tends to leave you feeling guilty if you deviate from any of the author's "rules" for having the perfect birth.
If you're a firm believer in home birth and you believe that cesareans, episiotomies, and all medicinal forms of pain relief during labour should be avoided at all costs, this is the book for you. But if you prefer a more balanced look at birth (e.g., you don't think that having an epidural or a cesarean makes you a bad person or you're thinking about circumcizing your baby), then you might wish to steer clear of this book. It could end up making you feel guilty or angry.
While the tone of this book is not nearly as angry and self-righteous as the tone that Henci Goer adopts in her book The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth, it definitely belongs to the same school of thought when it comes to birthing: there's only one *right* way to have a baby, and you'd better measure up, sister.
Indepth look at all pregnancy and birth options.......2002-11-09
I have looked for this book as a pregnant mother and now a birth professional for years. Thank you Joyce Barrett and Teresa Pitman for your contribution to pregnant women!
This is now my first choice when I recommend a book to my clients, especially since it is the Canadian equivalent to The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer - another phenomenal book. All aspects of pregnancy and birth options are covered. Most importantly however, the risks of each option are well documented which is rare in today's current books or childbirth classes. How many women are told of the fallicies surrounding current gestational diabetes testing or the 50% false positive rates of AFP testing? None of my clients are ever told by their caregivers so I doubt many others are either. All pregnant mothers - if you are seeking true and accurate information about your pregnancy, please start with this book.

Book Description
This book is a biography about Frida Kahlo, artist and wife of the famous Diego Rivera.
Customer Reviews:
Suitably complex.......2004-12-14
Too many biographies fall at one of two extremes: either hagiography or pedestal-smashing. Jack Rummel's account of Frida Kahlo's life is instead a nuanced one, with an obstinate refusal to over-simplify. Rummel makes clear that Kahlo was neither saint nor passive victim, but instead a visionary artist compromised by an acute capacity for self-deception.
The convoluted paths of Kahlo's life are brought into sharp focus by Rummel's concise but illuminating narrative. Whether treating of Kahlo's finances or the intricacies of her art, the author knows how to turn the basic facts into a convincing story.
Only the most deranged and prejudiced reader could dismiss Rummel's book on the withered grounds that it doesn't conform to some political agenda. Instead, this thin volume is packed with the suitable complexity of an uncategorizable life.
worst biography ever.......2000-10-20
This book was absolutely horrible. This is the most ignorant biography I've ever read. Rummel is constantly criticizing every aspect of her that doesn't agree with traditional american values. Every time the communist party comes up in the book, Rummel inserts some incredibly ignorant and stupid anti-communist comment. There are so many interesting and well written books about this amazing woman's life, don't read this one.
Good Reading.......2000-06-11
As a fan of this great painter i already knew the major things about her life but this book goes deep into the mysterious world of Frida Kahlo. I find it expressing Frida as she would like to have been remembered this is a must read for the art lovers.
