Book Description

An unusual memoir of explosive content written by a humble Cuban farmer who joined the guerilla headed by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in the Sierra Maestra in 1957 and went on to fight with Che in Africa and Bolivia, where Guevara found his death a year later.

4 out of 5 stars Interesante libro.......2005-02-07

5 out of 5 stars A story worth telling.......2006-07-09

I first learned of Beate Sirota Gordon from a Japanese woman friend who told me she was well loved by the women of Japan. They know she is responsible for insisting that they have a voice in their democracy. Unlike the previous writer, I found her straight forward prose to be very readable. She may not have a fancy literary style, but its her story and I appreciate the way she told it.

2 out of 5 stars A great story poorly written. .......2005-10-24

Ms. Sirota Gordon has a facinating tale to tell but, ultimately, its telling has little depth and skims the surface of events in her life. Her story deserves another author.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book from an amazing lady!.......2003-04-17

I found this book to be inspiring. A book not to be missed!

4 out of 5 stars Now it can be told!.......2002-10-12

A concise, elegant autobiography by Beate Sirota Gordon, an Austrian who grew up in pre-war Japan as a child and later returned to what she very much considered her home to find her parents (music teachers who refused to abandon their Japanese students as pre war tensions mounted and were held prisoner). It chronicles not only her battle with the entrenched Japanese male authority but battles with the entrenched American male authority, who weren't necessarily any less sexist than the Japanese. She took a job with the American army as a translator and ended up helping draft Japan's post war constitution. And she did all this at the age of 22!

Gordon escaped the war by going to an all girls school in California. There she encountered the feminist movement and learned a lot about women's rights issues. Upon returning to Japan, she was asked by the American government to help with the constitution. The Americans wanted the constitution written and adopted quickly, fearing the Soviets last minute entry into the war would give them influence. She went to town, drafting about a dozen articles for the Japanese constitution guaranteeing women rights in the work place, politics, health care, child custody, etc. Many were stripped out but two key articles she drafted remained. What's more amazing is Gordon takes so little credit for her accomplishments and instead agonizes more about what was left on the cutting room floor.

For several decades after, the creation of the Japanese constitution was not well publicized. The Americans feared the haste with which it was written and the fact that the job was basically given to a group of found amateurs would cause the Japanese people to reject it. It's only now that her story has been able to come out.

All in all a fascinating account and hard to put down. If there's a downside it's that Gordon doesn't pump up her autobiography with more fascinating and telling anecdotes.

Book Description

The Only Woman in the Room is a vivid and very personal account of one woman's life in Europe, prewar Japan, and the United States. As the daughter of renowned Russian pianist Leo Sirota, Beate Gordon grew up in the cosmopolitan world of the concert tour, then settled in Japan in the 1930s.

During World War ll, while her parents remained in Japan under secret service surveillance, Gordon lived alone in America, monitoring Tokyo Radio in five languages for the government and later writing radio propaganda.

She recounts her dramatic reunion with her parents in Tokyo, where she worked in General MacArthur's headquarters, and evokes the postwar suffering in defeated Japan. Her intimate description of helping draft the women's rights section of Japan's new constitution in less than a week is an astonishing record of history in the making.

On returning to the States in 1947, Mrs. Gordon became a cultural impressario, bringing artists, dancers and musicians from all over Asia to the United States. Her adventures in search of traditional arts in Burma, Tibet, Bengal, and Indonesia make for gripping and sometimes hilarious anecdotes.

The Only Woman in the Room can be appreciated on many levels. Armchair travelers, feminists, history buffs and, above all, people who enjoy well-written memoirs will all find Beate Gordon's extraordinary life a riveting read.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of feminist victory in feudal Japan.......1999-02-23

Ms. Gordon, born in Vienna and educated in Japan and the United States, found herself by an accident of history in Japan at age 22 with the American Occupation Forces immediately after World War II. General MacArthur directed her and others to draft a new constitution for Japan. Drawing on European constitutions that she found in the remaining libraries in war-torn Tokyo, she wrote for Japanese women an advanced equal rights clause that Japanese women have treasured ever since. The story of how the Japanese constitution was written is extremely interesting and well-written. Readers interested in Vienna and in European social activity of the early 20th Century will also find interesting descriptions of same. Mrs. Gordon's father was a famous Russian pianist who associated with many other famous pianists of his era, such as Artur Rubinstein.

    Book Description

This book proposes a way to read autobiographical writing by those the dominant deem "other" than themselves. Focusing on innovative works by Woolf, Baldwin, Kingston, and Winterson, the author analyzes how they each represent the self as unique, collectively "other," and inclusively human, and how these conflicting aspects of selfhood interact.

        4 out of 5 stars My bible.......2007-07-21

I truly love this book. It makes so much sense to me that IC is not just a bladder disease but the result of a toxic body. I reaize how toxic my body has felt in the last few years and how now I can change that. My only wish is that she would have included information on diet. She has so much knowlwdge and I would love to hear how she feels diet plays a roll in healing. From all I have read, diet is a key factor in healing.

5 out of 5 stars Along the Healing Path.......2006-08-06

This is a great book that offers many alternatives in treating interstitial cystitis. It's very helpful! It gives many, many tips on how to recover from this awful disease. I also recommend her other books "To Wake in Tears" and "Awakening through the Tears."

        5 out of 5 stars Hope.......2006-05-06

I read the 1st two of her books; I will get the third in a couple of weeks. I have IC and I know I wouldn't be where I am without reading these books. They offer more hope than anything I've read. These are must read books. If you know of someone who has IC, buy them this book as a way of offeing them hope. They offer a way out, of what looks like, a no win situation. Thank you Catherine for writing these!

5 out of 5 stars Along the Healing Path.......2006-02-11

This book is both very illuminating and comforting. There are options one would not likely have found elsewhere. It gives hope that there is indeed light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. Written in a down to earth, warm style the book is like a welcome letter from a close friend. I am anxious to get started on Awakening Through the Tears.

        4 out of 5 stars IC CONTINUED.......2005-10-09

This book I also found to be informative to IC patients. I think it provides us with another way to view this painful disease whether we agree with it's perspectives or not. I know a lot of things made sense to me, and some I am even willing to try, as I have lost faith in the medical community after battling this for 7 years. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Easy, healthy, unique breads from around the world.......2006-09-27

Having recently relocated to San Antonio and finding a lack of bakeries, I purchased a Cuisinart convection breadmaker. Although the Cuisinart CBK-200 comes with a decent set of recipes, many are laden with fat (with 30% or more of calories coming from added oil, butter, nuts, etc.) and sugars. I try to eliminate oils, fats, sugar and salt from my diet, so I was looking for a healthier alternative to home breadmaking.

Enter The Best Low-Fat, No-Sugar Bread Machine Cookbook. Added fats have been replaced by lean, fruit- and veggie-based alternatives such as unsweetened apple butter, applesauce, minced prunes, and mashed sweet and white potatoes. Sugars such as molasses and honey are replaced by dried fruits (raisins, currants, cherries). Sun-dried tomatoes, zucchini, corn, carrots, kale, and onions are among the many veggies that make a guest appearance.

Although I was doubtful that these healthy, lean (less than 5% calories from fat) breads would be tasty, I have tried three loaves thus far and all were sensational. My first loaf was the Butternut Squash and Balsamic Vinegar loaf (page 51). I substituted canned pumpkin for the squash and dried cherries for the raisins, and the loaf was pleasantly sweet, with an orange color but not an overwhelmingly pumpkin-y taste.

My second loaf was a breakfast bread (Oat and Raisin Bread, page 35). Although I only made a one-pound loaf, the bread was so light and airy that it was nearly as big as a large loaf. Both the Butternut Squash and Oat and Raisin bread are delicious toasted in the morning.

My third loaf was made to accompany soups: lentil bread, with a hearty helping of cooked lentils and Mediterranean flavors courtesy of sage and sea salt. Denser than the first two breads I baked, the lentil bread is a savory, hearty accompaniment to soups and sandwiches.

Although one reviewer mentioned a disasterous loaf of zucchini bread, I am brand new to breadmaking (my first loaf ever was from this cookbook) and have had nothing but success. It's important to add ingredients in the order recommended by your breadmaker: usually liquids first (at room temperature, except for water, which should be between 80-90 degrees), then flours and seasonings, and finally the yeast. The directions are straightforward and easy to follow. Several breads require finishing in the oven (low-fat challah, whole wheat baguettes, pitas). Besides low-fat, no sugar added recipes, the book also includes a chapter on salt-free breads (but not gluten-free).

The Best Low-Fat, No-Sugar Bread Machine Cookbook Ever truly lives up to its name. Although over ten years old, the recipes work beautifully with my brand new, circa 2006 bread machine. Thankfully, the ingredients are fairly common, with some alternative grains and flours (amaranth, quinoa, barley, rye) called for to add variety. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves bread but is looking to lighten up on refined sugars, oils, and salt; these recipes offer all of the taste with none of the guilt.

        5 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2005-03-08

I have tried two different recipes now. Even though the recipes are for 1lb and 1.5lb loaves (and I make 2lb loaves), I just double the 1lb ingredients, and everything has turned out fine.

I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2000-07-05

I tried this book for the first time and used recipe for Summer Zucchini bread on page 90. It was a disaster. I felt there is an error in this one because it only called for 1/3 cup of water for large loaf of bread! I followed this one to the letter and the result was a hard clumpy mess. I'm an experienced bread maker user and this was a huge disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic no fat, no sugar bread.......1999-01-04

Absolutely delicious bread - even my son eats it. Easy to understand and most ingredients are available in Australia. Works great in my new Breville Breadmaker

        5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book........1997-10-05

I have had tremendous success with this book and the other ones in the series. I don't know if the recipes are just well-suited to my National/Panasonic machine or what, but I have NEVER had a failed recipe in the batch. Granted, the author always suggests to add ingredients in the order that is recommended by your machine, so I suppose a good working knowledge of your bread machine is a must. I especially liked this book and the subsitutes that it has for sugar. I highly recommend this book.

Dan Essigs books inparticular are especially inspiring, but the entire book is full of great artists, and the step by steps are a great peek into how they create. Any creative bookbinder would be happy to have this in their library!

1 out of 5 stars Not So Much........2004-12-06

Penland is excellent. Its instructors and classes excellent. But while this book covers a wide range of material from skilled, respected bookbinders, THIS BOOK IS NOT EXCELLENT.

The essays and instructions have been cruelly edited, dumbed-down and glossed-up. For chrissake, THEY AIRBRUSHED JIM CROFT'S HANDS. If you live out in the boonies as he does, working with your hands, living off them, day and night, your hands do not come to the camera with a manicure. And they airbrushed Julie Leonard's lovely gap-toothed smile! Etc. These are artists of well-repute, and they deserve much better from a publishing house.

The good this book does is heighten awareness of the advanced glories of the book arts today -- but that is grossly undercut by the fact that, through the editing, the awareness is inherently flawed. This is a book for the coffee table, not the student, or the binder. It could perhaps be useful as an illustrated bibliography -- people, places, and techniques to seek out. But why buy for that reason, when you could rent it from the library?

5 out of 5 stars A book of beauty and substance.......2004-11-21

This book is more than just a collection of the work of a number of outstanding bookmakers amd bookbinders. It is also an explication of the approach of each artisan to his/her art, and a step-by-step illustration of one of each person's projects. The photographs are also outstanding.

Each chapter is excellent, but my own favorite is the chapter by Barbara Mauriello on Box Construction. It combines a charming and thoughtful essay with striking illustrations of the wide range of her work.

5 out of 5 stars First impression a lasting one.......2004-10-26

I was fortunate enough to see a copy of this book prior to distribution and was extremely impressed. As I type this I am looking a wide shelf of "books on books" and must admit that less than half of them really were worth the price of admission. Granted, I gain a little something from each of them, but only a few of them truly provide that something extra or uniqueness that brings me back again and again as either a reference or for inspiration.

I believe that this one will be one I go to for both. It is that good.

As the publisher's description indicates, Penland has pulled out all the stops and have tapped their talent pool of true MASTERS of the book arts for this book. The contributors are like a Who's Who in the book arts field. The illustrations and photos are well done, clear instructions and wondrous books to gawk at for inspiration.

If you are a veteran book artist, you will appreciate the book for its depth and may even be a bit challenged by it. If you are a novice, you will be given the rare opportunity to learn from the best in the country and be moved to bring your work to new levels.

It should be noted that this book is NOT all a guide on how to make several different types of books or bindings. It does provide insight and guidance on how to make certain aspects of books, including a small, wooden "shrine" to hold a tiny coptic stitch book. If you know Dan Essig's work, you'll immediately recognize his contribution. Dan shows you how he makes at least one of this book forms. Eileen Wallace's contribution displays her common sense but very precise approach to book binding. If I were to summarize the book in a few words, it would be, "Talented book artists show you how they do what they do."

If you are looking for a book of JUST binding methods, don't buy this book. If however, you are looking for an insight into creative processes as performed by masters of the craft, all bound into an inspiration-filled tome - buy it.

I do highly recommend this book...it deserves to be in your art/fine craft library.

Balancing the serious work of survival with an upbeat tone, The Cancer Patient's Workbook maintains a positive outlook while avoiding pointless platitudes. As a survivor of Stage 4 lung cancer, author Joanie Willis is all too familiar with both the spiritual trials and the daily frustrations that cancer can bring. Her book is fundamentally pragmatic, but incorporates alternative healing, humor, and personal reflections. Divided into seven sections, the format is thoughtfully laid out with information broken down into easily digestible boxes. If you prefer to maintain your privacy, the paper cover slides off to reveal calming photos--with no telltale title in sight.

Chapter 3, "Navigating the Medical Maze," is filled with questions for your doctors, and includes informative glossaries of medical terms. The questions are broken down by type of medical provider, and cover surgeries, diagnostic tests, and personal medical history. There is plenty of space provided to write the answers directly in the book, and separate pages are included to create a pain diary. Illustrations are provided when relevant, such as in this diary section, allowing you to color in the exact locations of pain on a human's outline. "Nature's Pharmacy" covers alternative therapies and dietary suggestions, and includes short quizzes, as well as notes on substances that have been shown to be harmful. "On My Own Terms" is a tough chapter, but one that allows you to get your wishes down in writing in case of death. Here, you can plan everything from your funeral service to particular bequests, and Willis provides poems, song lyrics, and plenty of writing space to help you through.

Providing both practical and emotional support, this workbook is like a friend who's been there, done that--and is just waiting to help. --Jill Lightner

The Cancer Patient's Workbook helps keep track of it all in one place, in a practical format that ensures a clear understanding of what to expect at every juncture and helps patients answer important questions including: What questions should I ask the doctor and when? I bought this book for my mother the week following her diagnosis of Stage 4 lung cancer. This book was a blessing in the early days of diagnosis. It offered hope and guidance. Joanie Willis provides excellent information on nutrition, diet, exercise and vitamins which doctors often don't address. We have used many of her suggestions and have found them helpful as we, as a family, battle this disease. Ms. Willis also provides hope which you need after receiving devastating news. I would recommend this book to not only patients, but family members. This is the first book I would recommend to family members after their loved one receives a diagnosis.

As newly diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with spread to the brain I found The Cancer Patients Workbook to be the best one- stop source of information I have discovered.

Everything from what to expect from treatment side-effects to experimental treatments is covered as well as great material on coping with the diagnosis of cancer.

I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking for a way to deal with the beast that is cancer.

This book has been an invaluable resource to me as I navigate the maze of lung cancer material, treatment options, clinical trials, etc. Joanie has done a fabulous job of covering every topic, no matter how painful, from begining to end of this painful journey. Three of my family members also have the book so we can all refer to it prior to treatment and for questions that arise. I highly recommend the book.

The Cancer Patient's Workbook has one of the largest collections of cancer-related websites that I have seen in any health book. Mrs. Willis maintains a website, cancerpatientsworkbook.com that includes links to all of the websites found in The Cancer Patient's Workbook. The websites are laid out exactly like they are found on the pages in the book. It is just one more tool that makes using the workbook incredibly simple.
