Book Description
Encounters with Kierkegaard is a collection of every known eyewitness account of the great Danish thinker. Through many sharp observations of family members, friends and acquaintances, supporters and opponents, the life story of this elusive and remarkable figure comes into focus, offering a rare portrait of Kierkegaard the man.
Often viewed by his contemporaries as a person who deliberately cultivated an air of mystery and eccentricity, Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) has been, then and now, a subject of great speculation. His startling attack on the established church, his broken engagement with a young woman from a respected family, and his searing criticisms of literary figures--from the editors of The Corsair to Hans Christian Andersen--are among the acts that brought him much notoriety during his short lifetime. Yet arriving at a sense of the philosopher's personality and motives behind his behavior has been a difficult task. He left no memoirs of autobiography, but in the enormous cannon of his published writings, the author and the person Søren Kierkegaard is problematically present in a welter of disguises. An indispensable path to understanding what he was like as a person, maintains Bruce Kirmmse, is through the observations of his contemporaries.
These accounts, ranging from the writings of Meïr Aron Goldschmidt, editor of The Corsair, to the recollections of Kierkegaard's fiancée, are organized around the major episodes of the philosopher's life. They enable us to glimpse, among many things, his spiritual and intellectual development, to get a sense of what it was like to be the object of his friendship or his wrath, and to examine various persons' opinions about his relationship with his young fiancée. The memories of this woman, Regine Olsen, who later married Fritz Schlegel, are among the most moving passages: they reveal her profound suffering, her personal understanding of Kierkegaard, and the satisfaction she ultimately felt, knowing that "he took her with him into history." This collection of first-hand accounts invites the reader to compare and interpret a wealth of fascinating stories, and in the end forms an intriguing "do-it-yourself" biography for both the scholar and general reader.

Reclaiming Your Life.......2007-09-17
It's not too late to reclaim your life--read this book and work alone or with a competent therapist to understand first, why you need to reclaim your life and second, how to do it. You will be amazed. This book is a must read for anyone struggling with identity issues which have arisen from growing up with faulty parenthood. This book is an excellent resource, whether you are beginning your healing work or are stuck somewhere along the way (i.e., attempting to re-work your childhood issues through your current relationship).
4 and half stars.......2007-09-07
She is a formidable authoress and there are points here unraveled in no other books out there (with the exception of non American authoresses like Alice Miller.). Author Miller reveals the truth and leaves us in want and hopelessness, Reclaiming Your Life is the answer.
The withheld half point was due to the following very RELEVANT point, not mentioned in this book. How can this highly relevant point not even be mentioned in a book such as this? The point I want to make is we, as kids had been smart[er than given credit for or we allow ourselves to be aware of]. As kids, the most hopeless and helpless Truth is not that which is stated in this book, but the following - it's that of our UPCOMING FATE. We knew. We knew the unavoidable-ness of our situation, our forthcoming terrors - that not only is it like this NOW, BUT IT WILL BE FOR OUR ENTIRE CHILDHOOD. THAT NOT ONLY DO WE SUFFER NOW BUT WE HAVE FORTHCOMING DREADS, FOR THE NEXT 15-20 YEARS.
Now this, IS hopeless, because there is nothing we could or could have done about it. Now ... the question is ... this most relevant and dreaded point ... WHY has there been no mention? Now that I dare mention it, how the hell are we supposed to FEEL hopeless and helpless, when these things kill adults and not just kids?! Let me again stress that the situations did not just feel hopeless, THEY ARE HOPELESS, AND WE DID MISS THE FECKON OPPORTUNITIES OF CHILDHOOD. THEY ARE LOST FOREVER. THIS IS A FACT and this very fact is the root of all our problems and what we want to avoid and distract from. The author does not once mention the mourning of this extreme, not just loss but the terror of unavoidable (hopeless) forthcoming losses still to come, over and over and over year after year after year after year ... (again, not just the losses but the continuous dread of forthcoming ones in addition to the losses themselves that this book is all about. It is the compounding, on top of occupying a small, weak and fragile body and mind which makes the situation authentically hopeless and the victim authentically helpless). THIS is real hopelessness. It's real and I will say again that this sort of thing kills strong bodied adults, NOT just kids. So where is the hope for ADULTS SO THAT WE DON'T DIE NOW?...it is in the Law of Karma. The Law of Karma says that our parents are INDEBTED to us, and that we shall be paid. Justice will be done and Truth prevails. The book voids of this most relevant point and it is such a missing link. Too bad.
absolutely terrific.......2006-11-10
I think we could usefully back away from the word "abuse" in a lot of instances....let us just say that parents do a LOT of things that injure their children on emotional and even deeper levels, injuries that continue to cause pain and dysfunction all their lives unless the children can figure out how to repair the damage.
Setting aside the overuse of the A-word, this book does four things very well: first, it defines and gives examples of the major categories of things that parents do which are seriously injurious. Second, it calmly shows how those childhood injuries continue to do damage in adult life. Third, it makes the point that by the time the injured child is an adult, there is NOTHING THE PARENT CAN DO to undo the injury. But fourth, wonderfully, it gives step by step instructions as to what the injured child, now an adult, can do to reduce or even end the damaging effects of those childhood injuries.
If you couple this book with the books of Harville Hendrix, you have POWERFUL tools for enabling yourself to live much MORE happily ever after!
Excellent but be careful.......2005-08-11
Jenson's book is excellent in helping you define past abuse and stop minimizing, denying, etc. Her tone is helpful and she shares that she, too, needed healing from childhood neglect. That said, regression therapy can be very dangerous to do alone. Get a sympathetic therapist, one familiar not only with childhood abuse and neglect but Jensen's work, too. I wouldn't recommend doing it all on your own or with non-professionals--the deeper the trauma, the more abuse there was, the more serious the abuse, the more likely you will tap into very strong and deeply buried feelings that can wreck your day, week or month until you work through them. I used the book on my own and had to find a therapist to help me sort through everything.
I stiill refer back to her book, esp. identifying "old" feelings v. the present situation. Be careful, though and have plenty of professional and family/friend support, esp. if the abuse you suffered left any signs of PTSD or anything like that.
This book will bring peace to your life!.......2005-06-30
Amazing! This book gives step by step instructions on how to become free of all the emotion baggage that we all accumulate over our lives, especially defense mechanisms (habits) developed in childhood. Tha author also gives enough examples to make her process easier to follow.

I love this book.......2007-06-20
I'm not much of a gourmet chef, but everything in this book is super easy and incredibly tasty. My sister in law made the mac & cheese and when I asked her for the recipe I thumbed through the book and wanted just about every reciepe in the book. Which prompted me to just by it. Well worth the $$.
The Never-Fail Cookbook.......2006-01-22
What can one add to this review's title?
We have made a large fraction of the many recipes in this delight, and never had anything but wonderfully good eating as a result.
It is truly "the never-fail cookbook".
excellent book for learning to cook!.......2004-12-07
I love to cook yet I barely look for cookbooks. Interestingly, my boyfriend starts cooking and he is the one finding this book excellent to follow step by step(and he's never cooked for anybody at all!). The book also gives you an overview on essential ingredients, tips for variation and even wine recommendation. For the person like him - has no ideas what will turn out from a recipe, this book is perfect with its pictures and detailed description. He has tried more than half of the recipes and honestly, those are all quick but great pasta dishes!
Great!.......2004-05-13
This cookbook is easy to follow and the recipes are really good. It gives some different recipes to add to your pasta repertoire, rather than the usual red sauce. I like this book so much, I've bought it and given it as a gift several times. The bolognese recipe is awesome!
Best Pasta Book EVER!!!!.......2004-03-27
I love this book! It is so well done. All recipes are quick, easy and beautifully photographed. You will feel like a gourmet every time you make one of the recipes! Each recipe also has a wine suggestion. This is great for trying new wine pairings with your meals. All recipes are so easy that anyone can make an impressive meal.

The Art of Manipulating Fabric
ASIN: 0963761234 |
Book Description
The second volume in Julie Parker's Fabric Reference Series explains the different fabrics made from cotton, using plain English instead of confusing technical jargon. A detailed description of each fabric is illustrated with a real cloth sample, right there on the same page, which clarifies in the simplest way what a broadcloth, poplin, seersucker or voile actually looks and feels like. A comprehensive introduction covers fiber characteristics, history of cotton, the main sources of cotton and the cotton textile industry, followed by two-page descriptions of the main fabric types, each illustrated with a 2-1/2 x 4 cloth sample and simple black-and-white drawings. In the back of the book, space is provided for the reader to collect additional fabric samples and record personal notes, followed by a list of mail-order sources, glossary, bibliography and index.
The 40 cotton fabric samples are packaged separately, layered in the same order as they appear in the book. It takes only a few minutes to mount the samples to the book's pages, using double-stick tape or a small spot of glue. Instructions are included. Samples include: batik, batiste, broadcloth, calico, canvas, chambray, chenille, chino, chintz, corduroy, damask, denim, dotted Swiss, double knit, drill, duck, eyelet, flannel, gauze, gingham, interlock, jersey, lawn, Madras, monk's cloth, muslin, organdy, osnaburg, oxford cloth, piqu , pliss , poplin, sateen, seersucker, shirting, terry cloth, ticking, twill, velveteen, voile. All About Cotton is packed with information about the different weaves, yarns and finishes used to make cotton fabrics. Terms such as pima cotton, combed cotton, Egyptian cotton, Sea Island cotton and Peruvian cotton are clearly explained. A must for anyone who works with fabric! The Fabric Reference Series has been featured in Crafter's Choice, a division of Book-of-the-Month Club. Other books in the series include All About Silk, with 32 silk samples, and All About Wool, with 35 wool samples.
Customer Reviews:
Great Fabric Reference.......2007-06-22
I've had this book for about six years and I still consult it at least monthly. Fabric vendors love to use hundred-year-old cryptic terms to describe fabric, most terms referring to the manufacturing method. Having never made my own fabric, I am not familiar with these terms. This book closes the gap and explains how the fabric is made, where it originated from, the predominant use of the fabric and its sewing characteristics. If you have a fabric stash, you need this book.
I also have the Silk and Wool books which are equally good (though I don't sew on wool or silk nearly as much as cotton).
A great reference for fabric artists........2001-04-29
The only fabric book comes with real fabric swatches. A great reference for fabric artists. You know how sometimes you want to achieve certain quality but don't know what material to use. The description of each fabric helps me to choose the right material for the right projects and make sure it stays that way forever. I also learn more materials for my fabric sculpture. I finally found this ideal book after so many years.
All three books in this series are invaluable!.......1999-08-11
I love fabric and love to sew, but don't really know much about the fabrics I use. These books are so well-designed and well-written that it is a joy to learn from them. Be sure to buy the versions with the fabric samples included - that's what makes these books so special!

Reversing Multiple Sclerosis: 9 Effective Steps to Recover Your Health

Book Description
Multiple sclerosis is as much a mystery as it is a disease, but this chronic and often-disabling condition of the central nervous system affects an estimated 350,000 nationwide. From the first moment of her diagnosis, author Margaret Blackstone took charge and educated herself on every aspect of her condition. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with MS. She provides illustrative charts and tables, crucial information about the nature of the disease, treatment options, diet, exercise, social concerns, emotional issues, networking with others, and much more. The First YearMultiple Sclerosis will be an invaluable guide for everyone learning to live with a MS diagnosis.
Customer Reviews:
Good overall book; ideal for newly diagnosed........2006-10-21
I burned through this book in a weekend, so curious to know what was in store for me as a newly diagnosed person. I found it to be comforting (which I needed at the time), but light in some of the issues I have subsequently faced (such as unsympathetic employers, inability to pay for injection medicines). I'd like to see a book on the challenges of everyday life for newly diagnosed...I think I could have benefitted from someone else's experinces.
excellent.......2006-07-01
being too frugal to purchase the 2004 version, i wanted to see if first i would like it, so i bought the very inexpensive 2002 edition. these comments are focused only on the 2002 edition. blackstone writes in a very easy to understand manner. she talks about things that are most important to the person with m.s. she identifies relevant topics. at times, i wished that she would have gone into more detail on some topics. on the other hand, it is so easy to read and suggestions are very helpful. on the other hand (is that 3 now?) the outline by days and months is not terribly logical and makes it less convenient to reference information. most people with m.s. will devour this book the first weekend. it compares favorably with similar books. it was well worth the purchase price and i would recommend this book. again, i have not looked at the 2004 edition and i can't comment on it.
Must Have Book.......2006-04-02
This is the best book that I found to update you on the current research and info to help you with your MS. I wouldn't bother reading any other book
Too Light for Such a Heavy Disease.......2005-07-20
This book is simplistic and annoyingly cheerful. Perhaps I know too much about multiple sclerosis after being part of my brother's struggle for 15 years and then recently being diagnosed myself. I found Blackstone's attitude like that of a kindly old aunt. Don't worry, dearie, you can overcome this nasty little problem and live a full and happy life like anyone else.
Puleese! Tell it like it is. Tell it the way Montel Williams did in his personal experience, "Climbing Higher", which was painfully honest, realistic, enlightening and inspiring.
I am stuck with this disease and must learn to accept it, but I don't need anyone to give me false hope. The author talks about the great medications they have, but doesn't spend much time on the miserable side effects. She stresses that a cure is within the near future. I hope that is true, but the doctors told us that 15 years ago and nothing helped my brother who is recently deceased.
It's nice to have a positive attitude like my amazing brother had, but it's not nice to represent MS as if it were a condition that, if you follow the author chapter by chapter, will lead you to a wonderfully fulfilling life. Living with MS requires courage, faith, endurance and hard work as you move forward into the unknown. Maybe cheerleading works for Blackstone, but I would rather have respect, compassion and an understanding of what each of us endures on a daily basis with this cruel disease.
Truly Helpful for your first year.......2005-03-26
This book was an absolute lifesaver for me. Once I was diagnosed I purchased this book and "Coffee in the Cereal". I made it 40 pages through Coffee, before I put it in the trash. This isn't a review of that book, so I won't say anything other than... "humerous pity party".
This book, on the other hand, is great because it is not only helpful, realistic and informative... but hopeful. And, after facing a diagnosis of this magnitude, that is what we as patients need.
I really can't stress enough how helpful this book has been for me on a personal level. The book is broken out into your first year of diagnosis, with a chapter for each of the first few weeks, and from then on chapters by month. Obviously in the beginning you want information but not too much information (as you're already getting it from your doctors and your friends who think you have MD, or cancer). The author understands that and gives you the basics you need. In other words, the first few chapters of this book give you a solid foundation to understand the goofiness that is MS. And hey, any book that tells me it's ok to drink wine in the first few weeks to deal is ok in my book!
Later on, the book not only describes the theories and potential causes of the disease, but also tells you what to expect. And, unlike "Coffee" it stresses what you CAN do to help control the illness. It sresses the importance of exercise, healthy diet, and stress management.
In a nutshell this book is informative and positive and I think it should be in every MS patient's (and MS patients family's) library.

Customer Reviews:
great introduction!.......2006-06-09
this book is an excellent introduction to the topic of m.s. it provides a nice summary of ms, diagnosis, cause, treatment, coping, employment issues, treatment / research. the glossary at the end is nice to look up basic questions. the suggested readings and resources at the end of the book are also very helpful. my neuorologist gave this to me to read at the time of diagnosis (after i had already read two dozen books on the topic). my wife found this book helpful. i think that this is an excellent book to purchase, used, if you can find it. there are some books available that provide much broader and deeper coverage, but this fills a niche and is well written. recommended as a good introduction.
Quick, informative read for those who need to know..........2003-07-27
I am still undergoing the trauma of being diagnosed. I am in the situation I am sure many of those with MS all go through, some doctors positive I have MS, some not so sure, going through all the testing for it and have some come back positive and some come back negative (for now at least). It's a very frustrating position to be in, not just for the person directly involved, but for the family to be in.
As I spent 4 years in med school for Neuroscience, you would think I would know everything, but not so. The area is so large now, that they just barely touch on MS, and then more on the advanced stages and dementia possibilities in it (don't jump to conclusions...I am not positive MS causes dementia, just they speculate with no absolute proof). So when this possibility hit me within the last year of agonizing pins-and-needles sensations first in feet and then going up to my hands, I was desperate for information.
This is a pretty good book. The authors know what they are talking about. They don't talk 'down' to the readers, they try to meet their needs for specific information on specific problems, give answers or places to go for answers. One thing I needed was to be able to show my husband some of this information that coincided with what I was telling him. MS is not a very visible disease at it's onset unless it is acute. It's hard to show your family you are in pain when there is nothing to see. Now when I start falling in front of them for no reason...then they start paying attention.
Sometimes people have to go to books and Internet to get answers because their blasted physicians aren't forthcoming and too often they are so busy shuttling patients in and out that door in order to make money, they forget the patient as an individual. One thing to stress, this book doesn't have all the answers, and everyone who undergoes MS has different symptomologies so they cannot possibly cover everything. But this book is a good place to start.

Not worth it. Too little info.......2003-04-21
I bought this book after reading the awesome reviews here. But it has disappointed me. Did not find anything new. Info is all too basic and you can find this by visiting couple of good web sites like WebMD.
I recommend "Multiple Sclerosis - The questions you have and the Answeres you need" instead of this. It has very exhaustive info of all different areas that a person interested in MS should know about.
Up-to-date and in-depth.......2002-07-11
With my wife's recent diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), I found myself scrambling around, looking for resources. This book is an excellent resource, one that is well worth consulting first! This second edition was published in 2002, and written by three prominent physicians specializing in MS, which means that it is up-to-date and in-depth.
There are nine chapters in this book. Chapter one explains what MS is and how it is diagnosed. Chapter two looks at the potential causes of MS. Chapter three is an excellent look at the treatments currently available. Chapter four contains practical advice on living with MS, while chapter five gives advice on coping with the disease, and chapter six discuses employment issues. Chapter seven is a hope-bringing chapter on current research into MS, while chapter eight discuses clinical trials. And finally, chapter nine is a short discussion on what your Multiple Sclerosis Society can do for you.
As a person caught up in the life of a Multiple Sclerosis sufferer, I must say that I found this book to be an excellent resource. I highly recommend this to those newly diagnosed, and to their loved ones.
Chapters spotlight new advances in clinical management.......2002-03-21
Now available in a newly revised and updated second edition, Multiple Sclerosis: A Guide For The Newly Diagnosed is a book collaboratively written by National Multiple Sclerosis Society vice presidents Dr. Nancy J. Holland (Clinical Programs), Dr. Stephen C. Reingold (Research Programs), and Dr. T. Jock Murray (head of the MS Clinic, Dalhousie University, Halifax) and specifically designed for those who have just learned that they have MS, -- as well as their family and friends. Chapters spotlight new advances in clinical management that help people with MS lead better and more productive lives than ever before. Chapters also give a plain overview in layman's language of the cause of multiple sclerosis, coping with the disease's effects, employment issues and much more. Multiple Sclerosis is a most thoughtful presented, usefully formatted, and informatively recommended guide for the non-specialist general reader.
